And, as racism continues to pervade the game, he also discusses how seriously it can affect young black footballers as well as the hugely commendable and important work of Kick It Out.

Elsewhere in London, Arsenal and Chelsea played out an energetic game that felt like a victory for Arsenal - despite it being a victory for Chelsea - because they weren’t booed off. Small victories and all that.

Joining us on today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard, is The Independent’s Vithushan Ehantharajah! His chose today's game based on pure, glorious nostalgia: Liverpool 2-1 Arsenal from 2004.

This game, with its mix of technical ability and unrelenting pace, was a tremendous advert for the Premier League. Arsenal’s performances were beginning to falter after coming off their invincible season, though this was still only their second defeat in 55 league matches. The goal they did score, a truly glorious one, served as a fleeting mirage of that previous Arsenal. Their opponents came flying out the traps, with Xabi Alonso particularly impressive, and played their part in a classic Premier League affair. And it was all rounded off by Neil Mellor’s astonishing goal deep into injury time!

Given that they’re so far ahead, Liverpool took the weekend off to go and win another trophy in Doha, while Riyad Mahrez came back to haunt Leicester as Brendyball came up short against Man City. Elsewhere, Nigel Pearson’s revitalised Watford were too much for the ghost of Man United.

On today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard, we’re looking back at an absolutely phenomenal match - one that Jonathan describes as potentially his favourite ever game of football. The Athletic’s Rafa Honigstein joins us to represent the other half of this fixture, as Bayern Munich take on Red Star Belgrade in the second leg of the 1991 European Cup semi-finals.

Political instability formed an all-encompassing backdrop to this game, with Slovenia and Croatia both declaring independence unilaterally in the months leading up to this game, and it was built up as a momentous footballing occasion. The 1991 European Cup was a tournament both sides were desperate to win; Bayern were obsessed with winning the European Cup again after 1976, and had suffered some traumatic final defeats in subsequent matches, while the Yugoslavian national side had notoriously lost a range of finals in the latter half of the 20th Century. With a home defeat in the first leg, Bayern were praying for a miracle - as we discover, the game more than lived up to this sizeable billing.

The Fussball-Meisters are back again for a brand new episode of On The Continent. There’s a whole load of stuff on the docket today, and we begin with last night’s El Clásico. It was the first goalless tie between the two sides since 2002, and Real Madrid were (predictably) unhappy with some of the officiating. We discuss Zinedine Zidane’s deserved public praise for Gareth Bale after his impressive display, as well as Luka Jović’s struggles in the Spanish capital.

We then take stock of a crazy Bundesliga game Andy saw earlier this week, as a Jadon Sancho-inspired Dortmund somehow didn’t emerge victorious from a cracking 3-3 with RB Leipzig. We also celebrate the goalscoring return of original OTC Goalbae Patrik Schick, before looking ahead to Leipzig’s intriguing matchup against Spurs in the Champions League and previewing the draw more generally.

Us again, after another weekend of football. What a game this is. 

Mikel Arteta may have had a preview of his very own Ghost of Christmas Future, as Man City brushed past apolitical-Arsenal on autopilot. Leicester weren’t “top enough” to keep up with Liverpool, as they were held by Norwich, and Big Dunc Ferguson kept up the good work with a point at Old Trafford, even if poor Moise Kean suffered the indignity of being a sub for a sub. 

As well as all this we muse on sleepy voiced sat-navs, “loopy behaviour” and wearable Pete Donaldsons. They’re not yet in production but if there’s enough demand we’ll probably look into it.

In fairness, Max brings a cracking game to the table: Cambridge United 5-1 Bristol City from the 1989/90 FA Cup. This was the start of a hugely impressive run of form for the U’s, as they went on to gain promotion and reach the quarter-finals of the FA Cup - feats they repeated a year later. They built this success on legendary manager John Beck’s genius philosophy of: 1) every marginal gain is a necessity and 2) pump the ball down the channels. This philosophy took Bristol City to pieces and dragged Cambridge all the way to the verge of the Premier League’s first ever season two years later.

The gang are finally back together for another episode of On The Continent!

With the Champions League group stage wrapped up, we assess the competitiveness of a tournament that has no teams from outside the traditional top 5 leagues in its knockout stages. RB Salzburg were one of the underdogs who came closest to qualifying, but couldn’t get the result they needed against Liverpool. We discuss some of their other bright young stars aside from Erling Braut Håland, as Liverpool are reportedly lining up a move for Japanese attacker Takumi Minamino. 

Elsewhere, after their elimination from the tournament, James gives a thorough assessment of Inter’s performances this season and how far they still have to go under Antonio Conte. Andy brings us a Lyon update after their laboured win over nine-man Nîmes, and Gennaro Gattuso is the new Napoli boss. We repeat: Gennaro Gattuso is the new Napoli boss. It’s tremendous stuff, it really is.

It’s the topic of that book that he joins us to discuss today as we look back on the fascinating, but ultimately tragic, life of teenage football prodigy Adrian Doherty. 

Oliver vividly tells the story of a 16 year-old with such exceptional talent that he was held in the same esteem as Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes in the Manchester United youth setup in the early 1990s. Remembered as an eccentric character whose interest lay in music, books and poetry, Doherty’s burgeoning career was cut short by a horrific cruciate injury - and his life tragically ended at just 26 after an accident in Den Haag. Oliver and Luke discuss his fascinating story, wondering whether football clubs should have a responsibility to cater for different personality types, and ponder what might have been...

Ole Gunnar Solsjkaer has brought Man United back! Again. The Red Devils all but handed the title to Liverpool with victory over Man City, unless Jamie Vardy has something to say about that, which he very well might, what with him being Jamie Vardy and all that.

We’re heading back to 2006 for the latest episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard, to a match our guest described as “perhaps the best FA Cup final there had ever been.” It’s the 2006 final between Liverpool and West Ham, and our guest is the Guardian football writer Jacob Steinberg!

The FA Cup had seen some fairly underwhelming finals throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s, but this game in Cardiff gloriously bucked that trend. West Ham, with Alan Pardew in only his second full season in charge, took on the European champions in front of 71,000 at the Millennium Stadium. We discuss the lead up to the game and the respective sides’ impressive seasons, as well as the match itself - that late Steven Gerrard howitzer included.

The Amazon era has begun! Liverpool left five goals with neighbours Everton as the streaming behemoth gave us a glimpse into the future. In the same evening, Jose Mourinho made an unhappy return to Old Trafford, Jamie Vardy continued to close in on his own scoring record and Watford kept being rubbish.

On reflection this was always going to be a terrible time for Pep Guardiola to enter into the gladiatorial (Sports Direct) arena that is the Brucey Bowl, but to his credit Man City did at least emerge with a point - thanks to Jonjo Shelvey.

On today's episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard, we're heading back to one of the finest nights in Liverpool FC's illustrious European history. It's Liverpool vs Borussia Mönchengladbach in the 1973 UEFA Cup final - and we're joined by Independent writer, former Times football editor and Liverpool fan Tony Evans!

Back in this era the UEFA Cup was a hugely illustrious tournament, where each winner would have to beat many of Europe's elite on their way to the trophy. Liverpool played Mönchengladbach for just 27 minutes before torrential rain led to the game being called off- so the two teams returned the next night to replay the fixture. Liverpool manager Bill Shankly, who was under pressure heading into the game, noticed Mönchengladbach were vulnerable in the air and implemented the tactics the subsequent night, which led to one of Liverpool's finest European performances.

Even as Serie A’s reign as the world’s greatest league was coming to a close, Juventus were still a totemic footballing powerhouse. Sir Alex Ferguson regularly measured his side against his Italian counterparts, but struggled to break through the glass ceiling that English teams typically faced in European competition. Those who performed well domestically were then beaten by cannier, more impressive sides from across the continent- as the first minute of this game typified. However, what followed Del Piero’s first-minute opener was a fantastic response from United, buoyed on by the Old Trafford faithful, as they began to establish themselves as one of Europe’s elite.

England celebrated their 1000th game with an emphatic win in front of the King of Surrey (Marcus) to get us all excited about the prospect of how they might perform at Euro 2020, especially given how many games are at Wembley. Are we being overly optimistic? We’re not even sure ourselves.
