At The Match returns for a big one - it's the first-ever top flight meeting between Berlin's two premier clubs, Union and Hertha, as the former mark their debut campaign amongst the elite. In an intense atmosphere between clubs that played in different national leagues until Germany reunification in 1990, Andy speaks to Union social media guru Ross Dunbar about the club's stratospheric rise in the two years that he has been there. Then, after Union's historic win, we catch up with Hertha defender Dedryck Boyata, supporter Marcel on the away fans' experience and finally Union spokesman Christian Arbeit on a long day ultimately becoming a rewarding one.

The weekend’s football looked like it was going to be full of surprises until it wasn’t, as Man City and Liverpool kept up their intriguing ding dong, followed by some mind games from Pep, while plucky Man United tried their best against Bournemouth but continued to struggle at this level. 

Andy Carroll got onto the pitch though, and in a Newcastle win! So that was nice. 

Aside from this Jim unfairly slanders Tyrone Mings, we hear about Rafael van der Vaart’s change of career and for some reason Liz Taylor makes her Ramble debut.

Jonathan has to deal with an exceedingly giddy Marcus on today’s episode of Greatest Games, produced in association with The Blizzard. We’re here to discuss the 2009-10 UEFA Cup- specifically Fulham’s spectacular 4-1 win over Juventus on their route to the final, alongside journalist and author Philippe Auclair.

Throughout a season that saw Fulham play over 60 games, managed by the underrated Roy Hodgson, there were some truly memorable midweek nights at Craven Cottage- but this was the pinnacle. An admittedly ageing and unspectacular Juventus side brought a 3-1 lead back from Turin but it proved insufficient, as Fulham secured qualification with a fantastic result. Marcus’ giddy aunt, indeed.

Another excellent weekend of football, the plucky little game that’s really starting to take hold. Liverpool earned a hard fought three points against Spurs, Chelsea’s Christian Pulisic dazzled and Arsenal vs Crystal Palace once again did justice to the hashtag #arscry

That’s not to forget Friday night’s game, (oh) when the Saints went piling in and Leicester City played like a team possessed (by Luke), setting a Premier League record for an away win as they eviscerated Southampton. Gubba lubba dub dub!

Today’s episode of Greatest Games features one of the most significant games in the history of European football: the 1974 World Cup final between West Germany and the Netherlands. We’re joined by author and journalist David Winner, the author of ‘Brilliant Orange: The Neurotic Genius of Dutch Football’ and former biographer of Dennis Bergkamp, to recount the arrival of Johan Cruyff and Total Football on the world stage.

With no real previous World Cup pedigree, the Netherlands arrived at the final in Munich having played some truly astounding football. They topped their group and beat East Germany, Argentina and Brazil on their way to the final whilst conceding only one goal. David joins us to explore the build up to the game and the ‘tragic’ outcome of the match, as we dispel some of the the myths that surround the Dutch perceptions of this game.

After winning the Scottish Cup the previous season Alex Ferguson’s Aberdeen side swept through the early rounds - conceding only one goal - and then drew the first leg of this quarter-final 0-0 in Munich, which was a success in itself. Ferguson then deployed some fantastic ruses to ensure the German side and travelling press pack underestimated Aberdeen, including a chaotic training session involving wayward passes hitting teammates in the head! But what followed was one of the most glorious ninety minutes of football The Dons’ fans will ever see. Jonathan talks through what it was like watching the game on the terraces as Aberdeen executed Ferguson’s tactics perfectly, and knocked out one of European football’s aristocrats.

On what should have been a night for analysing England’s impressive performance in Bulgaria, racist abuse from the stands is, rightly, the main focus on today’s episode of Jules & Andy. Oof, England’s visit to Prague wasn’t the stroll in the park many anticipated it being. It was more like a stumble into some stinging nettles because you were looking at your phone and had assumed the whole thing would be straightforward. 

Things were better over in Wales, as Gareth Bale’s brilliance earned the home side a point, while Andorra won their first ever European Championship qualifier and and John “Bangin’ ‘em in” McGinn kept up his goalscoring form.

Join Marcus Speller and Jonathan Wilson, this time alongside author and commentator David Bolchover, for another episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard. Today we’re heading back to 1962 to celebrate one of the most influential figures in 20th century football: Béla Guttmann. His Benfica side beat Real Madrid 5-3 in the 1962 European Cup final, and this extraordinary game was entirely reflective of an extraordinary man.

After arriving at Benfica, having won the league the season before with Porto, Guttmann immediately sacked twenty first team players. He then took Benfica to two Primeira Divisāo titles and a triumph in the previous European Cup, before meeting five-time winners Real Madrid in the 1962 final in Amsterdam. A thrilling, chaotic game featuring a Ferenc Puskás hat-trick finished 5-3 to Benfica, with Guttmann cementing himself as one of the finest coaches of any generation.

A man’s punched a horse again and there’s really nowhere else to start. This time it was a Portsmouth fan. We don’t know why supporters of our teams keep doing this and we assure you we’re not involved.

Away from that there was an actual Carabao Cup game as Southampton won THE South Coast derby, while Spurs went out to Lolchester on penalties and Old Man Milner helped Liverpool past MK Dons.

On today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard, we’re joined by Nicholas Blincoe, the author of ‘More Noble Than War: A Football History of Israel and Palestine.’ We’re heading to that part of the world for today’s match as we take a look at the 1928 Tel Aviv Derby, where Maccabi took on Hapoel for the first time.

In these clubs’ formative years, football was an entirely different proposition in Israel-Palestine. Initially seen as too individualistic a sport, it was gradually introduced by the British military and helped by mass immigration of younger people from Austro-Hungarian cities after the First World War. Jonathan, Marcus and Nicholas discuss the background around the two sides, each formed of an entirely different demographic, as well as the 3-0 Maccabi win and its historical significance.

And so to the South Coast for one of the biggest games of the season (apparently) as Southampton host Bournemouth, while Chelsea host Liverpool, desperately hoping they won’t win a penalty as they simply have no way of knowing what will happen if they do. 

The true main event is of course Sean Dyche vs Daniel Farke. Will it be Burnley or Norwich who take home the points? Who cares? This one is all about the eclectic sounds of the post match interviews.

The first round of Champions League fixtures is done and dusted, and we’re here to break it all down! We begin with Real Madrid’s loss to a surprisingly industrious PSG, as Ángel Di María put his former employers to the sword— is Zinedine Zidane’s job already at risk?

Today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard, sees us travel back to the 1936 German Olympics. Journalist and sports writer David Owen joins us to discuss the chaotic quarter-final between Peru and Austria.

The game was played against a backdrop of Nazi rule and propaganda in front of a fairly empty Stadion am Gesundbrunnen. These were two sides with contrasting fortunes throughout the 1930’s; Peru were beginning an impressive run of form that culminated in a victory at the 1939 Copa América, while Austria had begun a stark decline. Despite the sides’ lowly reputation, the match and extended aftermath were utterly bizarre. Join us as David, Jonathan and Marcus discuss a tumultuous affair involving a pitch invasion, three disallowed goals and a rescheduled game.
