For today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard, we’re joined by another member of the Football Ramble Daily parish: Andy Brassell! He’s here to discuss the 1971 European Cup final, where Rinus Michels’ imperious Ajax side took on Ferenc Puskás’ Panathinaikos.

Ferenc Puskás’ return to Wembley - eighteen years after his miraculous display in Hungary’s 6-3 hiding of England - was most significant achievement in his coaching career. He led an unfancied but hugely talented Panathinaikos side past Everton and Red Star Belgrade in the latter stages of the competition to the final, against one of the most significant teams in football history. Captained by Velibor Vasović and featuring a Johan Cruyff at the peak of his powers, this era-defining Ajax side went on to enjoy huge success with their Total Football philosophy, and this final may well have been the sliding doors moment at the beginning of it all.

We discuss the match itself, the political landscape surrounding Panathinaikos at the time and this pivotal moment in Dutch football history, which Jonathan sums up via a splendid gardening metaphor!

For our latest episode of Greatest Games, we’re joined by football writer and broadcaster Tom Williams as we take a deeper look at the 2006 World Cup quarter-final between Brazil and France. This match, despite being awash with some of the greatest players in history, was completely dominated by the balletic and utterly irresistible Zinedine Zidane.

After two poor seasons with Real Madrid, many—Zidane included—felt his star was on the wane. So pervasive was this sentiment, that he announced his retirement ahead of this tournament. What followed however, against Spain in the Round of 16 and against Brazil, was a final glimpse of Zidane at his best in all his former glory. This Joga Bonito-inspired Brazil side, featuring some of the nation’s greatest attacking talent ever, could do nothing in response. Zidane left his mark on this game in broad, beautiful strokes and cemented himself as one of the greatest midfielders football has ever seen.

There can be nowhere to start other than with the terrible news that Bury have been expelled from the EFL. Our commiserations to any Bury fans. Let’s hope that this never happens again.

For our latest episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard, we’re looking back at that thrilling 1953 FA Cup final contested by Blackpool and Bolton: ‘The Stanley Matthews Final’. Joining us is Seb Stafford-Bloor, a writer for Football365 and Four Four Two magazine, as well as a content editor of Tifo Football.

This final was a hugely significant moment in British football history. As it was the first final to be broadcast live on the BBC, the match was watched by a huge, unprecedented audience from all over the country. It also took place around the time that football was just beginning to be considered as the true ‘game of the people’ and still remains the only final where a hat-trick was scored. Seb, Jonathan and Marcus sit down and recount the rudimentary tactics and goalkeeping errors that led this match to be one of the most thrilling cup finals ever played.

For the latest episode of Greatest Games, in association with the Blizzard, we’re off to the Stade Vélodrome in Marseille with Norwegian writer Lars Sivertsen. He talks us through the 1998 World Cup group game between Norway and reigning world champions Brazil, where two late goals from his unfancied home nation beat an XI featuring Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Dunga and Roberto Carlos.

Lars discusses a risk-averse but hugely talented Norwegian side who, after disappointing results against Scotland and Morocco, had to win to secure their qualification from the group. After an 83rd minute equaliser from imposing striker Tore André Flo, Kjetil Rekdal struck the game-winning penalty in the final minutes— “with the lowest heart rate of any Norwegian.”

Welcome to the first of our brand new ‘Greatest Games’ series, in association with The Blizzard. Every Saturday, Marcus Speller,  Jonathan Wilson and a guest from the world of football discuss some of the most significant matches in football history. First up it’s our continental compatriot, James Horncastle!

James arrives to discuss one of the most infamous ties in European football history, where Milan took on Red Star Belgrade in the 1988/89 European Cup. With Milan looking like it was destined to be eliminated in the second leg, a thick fog totally enveloped the Marakana and forced the referee to abandon the game. James recounts how the visibility was so poor that the commentator couldn’t follow the flight of the ball and Milan’s Pietro Paolo Virdis was sent off 15 minutes before his manager Arrigo Sacchi realised. This dramatic delay gave way to one of the all-time great European ties, as 50,000 fans descended on the stadium to see their beloved Crvena zvezda take on the European powerhouses for the second time in two days.

With so many of the game’s biggest prizes being played at once it’s a great time to be a football fan, especially if you’re of a Geordie persuasion. Steve Bruce’s mere presence was enough to get his Newcastle United revolution under ho-way with a seismic victory over West Ham.
