In her latest book TOMBOY, Lisa Selin Davis says she wrote it because the story behind it is personal. When her daughter was in preschool, she gravitated towards "boy stuff" as much as she did "girl stuff."

When her daughter came home a few years later saying someone how called her a "tomboy," Davis decided to explore what that meant exactly beyond short hair on a girl, and how we assume gender identity based on clothes alone.

Lisa Selin Davis is an essayist, novelist, and journalist who has written for major publications such as the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and many more. She talks with Dr. Taz this episode on the history behind the word tomboy, the boundaries between transgender, tomboy, and other identities, as well as how the gender revolution will come from the parents of boys.

With so many diets out there, it’s easy to get confused about what would best lend itself to longevity, Dr. Longo supports a vegan diet with fish added. A diet high in animal fat lends itself to increased mortality.

Dr. Longo recommends eating two meals plus one snack per day instead of three meals for weight loss. Breakfast and lunch or dinner are advised. The snack should be about 200 calories, preferably a salad.

Listen as Dr. Longo joins Dr. Taz to discuss the longevity diet and how much body fat is healthy.

Chronic stress and anxiety present more than mental and emotional symptoms--they can also prompt physiological responses.

Stress and anxiety have become a regular occurrence in everyday life. From financial woes to relationship angst, there is no shortage of stress triggers.

Unfortunately, chronic stress and anxiety become more than just a mental or emotional condition. It can have a number of physiological results, such as leaky gut, food sensitivities, bloating, and an upset microbiome. Your body is constantly in reactive mode, which disrupts multiple systemic functions.

Rather than turn to prescription remedies, Ali Miller, RD, LD, CDE, prefers to take a more holistic approach. She utilizes a six-step approach in order to restore balance:

  1. Remove inflammation
  2. Reset the microbiome
  3. Repair the gut lining
  4. Restore micronutrients
  5. Rebound the adrenals
  6. Rebalance neurotransmitters
Miller also uses a ketogenic strategy for managing chronic stress and anxiety, which helps balance blood sugar levels and grounds mood and mindset.

Listen as Miller joins Dr. Taz to discuss her expertise in this area, as well as share highlights from her newest book, The Anti-Anxiety Diet: A Whole Body Program to Stop Racing Thoughts, Banish Worry and Live Panic-Free.

During the lockdown, a lot of people decided to get into cooking to pass the time.

But being stuck at home changed a lot about cooking, more than you might think. What were people cooking? How can you use those canned pantry staples and frozen foods in new and creative ways? and what if you're missing that key ingredient for a recipe, and know you shouldn't run out to a store?

Here to talk about these quarantine cooking questions and more is Pamela Salzman, a certified holistic health counselor and full-time cooking instructor.

Dr. Rick Hanson shares steps you can take every day to improve your or your child's resilience and well-being.

Amongst all the unrest and trauma in our world lately, we're taking this week to revisit an important episode from late last year on resilience and well being.

Be mindful. Fake it until you make it. Focus on the positive.

We hear so many phrases and instructions on how to be resilient and have a positive outlook on life, but according to Dr. Rick Hanson, it all comes down to neuroscience. He explains how neurons that fire together, wire together, and he lays out practical steps you can take to definitively develop inner calm, self-worth, and emotional intelligence.

By taking 5-10 minutes a day to sit with your positive and negative thoughts and turn them into feelings, you’ll build up strength over time that you can draw on in times of need. This practice works for both adults and children.

Dr. Hanson encourages people to sit with their emotions after something positive happens to make sure they permanently store those feelings of accomplishment in the brain. When you have a negative experience, he recommends a three-step process.

  1. Be. Sit with the experience and try to view it with compassion and mindfulness.
  2. Let go. Release the tension from your body and disengage with any beliefs that aren’t good for you or for others.
  3. Let in. Replace the negative feelings you’ve released with positive alternatives.
Listen as Dr. Hanson joins Dr. Taz to discuss how to become more resilient.

Couples who want to stay together in a lasting relationship need to be honest—with themselves and one another. Dishonesty is an express route to divorce and breakup. Those who don’t share what’s really going on in their minds and hearts with their partners are the ones who end up in a divorce lawyer’s office.

You may find yourself distancing yourself from others, diving head-first into work and ignoring your own self-care... all to the tune that eventually it will all be "worth it." Another common happening is a great deal of negative self-talk, especially when you aren't realizing success at the pace you'd like.

Nicole Lapin, bestselling author and TV anchor, has a message for you: you can find lasting success by your own definition, on your own terms.

In her newest book, Becoming Superwoman, Nicole candidly shares her own story of career burnout and an emergency hospitalization that prompted her to take her mental health seriously for the first time ever.

She joins Dr. Taz to describe her journey to her own success, with all the bumps along the way, and how you can become your own superwoman -- whatever that means to you.

Forget the dos and don’ts of healthy eating and instead choose to eat competently. So often, weight loss diets focus solely on the foods you should or shouldn’t eat.

But, according to dietitian and family therapist Ellyn Satter, positive eating habits have more to do with eating attitudes and behaviors than the foods you choose. Satter emphasizes that people should enjoy what they’re eating and focus on food competence.

Food competence comes down to feeding yourself faithfully and giving yourself permission to eat. People who eat competently tend to weigh less and have a more stable weight than those who don’t.

Three of the primary elements of eating competently are:
  • Creating a structure around your eating habits.
  • Creating an experience around eating.
  • Trusting yourself to get interested in new foods.
Listen as Ellyn Satter joins Dr. Taz to discuss competent eating.

EP 161 - Is Histamine Making You Sick?

21 min
View
Experiencing cramps, digestive issues, or flushed skin after eating? Histamine might be the culprit.

Determining the cause of digestive and gut health issues can be complex. Though many know of disorders like leaky gut, GERD, and IBS, a lesser known gut disruptor is histamine intolerance.

Histamine is a compound released by immune cells and is very important to the immune system and estrogen production. However, having too much histamine can cause digestive cramps, loose stools, urgent bowel movements, and flushing skin or hives.

An increase in patients with histamine intolerance and similar gut issues is caused by a number of factors:

  • Today, people aren’t eating enough vegetables or enough variety of vegetables.
  • People are eating too much processed food that’s high in sugar and low in fiber.
  • Humans no longer ferment foods regularly, which used to be a regular practice in the winter.
  • Everyone is exposed to medications, and there is more self-prescribing and self-diagnosing than ever before.
  • More toxic substances are present in everyday household items like makeup and cleaning supplies.
  • Americans are generally undernourished because diets lack the proper vitamins and minerals.
Fortunately, histamine intolerance can be managed with a low-histamine diet.

Listen as Nour Zibdeh joins Dr. Taz to discuss histamine intolerance.

Learn how group visits can cure loneliness and greatly improve our healthcare system.

For many, our current healthcare system isn’t working.

Conventional medicine doesn’t provide the care needed to uncover the root causes of chronic disease, and expensive insurance premiums keep underprivileged communities from accessing appropriate care.

James Maskell has spent the last decade sparking debate and innovating at the cross section of functional medicine and community. His Functional Forum helps healthcare professionals explore alternate routes to insurance, predictive and preventative medicine best practices, and learn more about group visits, in which multiple patients experiencing the same issue can seek treatment together.

Listen as James Haskell joins Dr. Taz to discuss the evolution of medicine and a cure for loneliness.

Alzheimer’s disease can and should be prevented. Dr. Dale Bredesen explains how.

In recent years, Alzheimer's disease has affected more and more people and it’s hitting at an earlier age. It’s the third leading cause of death in the United States. Two-thirds of Alzheimer's patients are women.

As recently as a few years ago, there was no hope for people diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. However, recent research shows that those who come in early can have a very good prognosis. The key is prevention and early detection.

In addition to genetic testing, adults age 45 and older should have conversations with their physician about lifestyle factors that can cause Alzheimer’s. They should also start getting regular cognoscopies, a test used to evaluate the risk factors that can cause neuro-degenerative diseases like Alzheimer's.

Dr. Dale Bredesen explains that a healthy plant-based diet that’s mildly ketogenic, stress management, and regular sleep patterns can help prevent Alzheimer’s and other neuro-degenerative diseases.

Listen as Dr. Dale Bredesen joins Dr. Taz to discuss the prevention of Alzheimer’s disease.

Regular walks with friends can help women reduce loneliness and the risk of heart disease. We’re experiencing a loneliness crisis in our country.

A recent study showed that 73% of women admit to feeling lonely. We’re simultaneously facing a fitness and wellness crisis. Despite the fact that we have more access to information about how to stay healthy than ever before, we’re having trouble turning that knowledge into action.

The solution to both of these issues might be simpler than you think — establishing a regular walking practice with other women. Studies have shown that women who walk regularly with friends are 2.5 times less likely to often feel lonely.

A regular walking practice also reduces your risk of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, dementia, heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis and several types of cancer.

Listen as 99 Walks founder Joyce Shulman joins Dr. Taz to discuss regular communal walking.
