“To put it succinctly, I’m ready to hang up the spikes and dive into those other passions. I’m just excited to dive into my career and build a life beyond running.”

A personal note: Robert has been one of my favorite runners since I first got into running. His grit and determination are on full display when he trains and races. His no-BS attitude, but yet kind heart has always been attractive to me. From the minute I first talked to Robert I was immediately impressed by his sincerity, kindness, and openness. I very rarely scream at the TV, but in the 2021 NCAA 10k championships, I found myself doing exactly that with 100m to go. Why was I displaying emotion at an event I had no control over? Because I know Robert and how hard he works and how badly he wants to win at whatever he does in life. Similarly, when I first found out that Robert was taking a step back from the sport of running, I shed a tear or two. While I’ll be sad to see his absence from the sport I cherish, I know he will take his passion, determination, and grit that he learned from running and apply to this next stage of his life. As the saying goes, “When you close a door another one opens”.

So thank you, Robert. Thank you for all you’ve done to push our sport forward. Thank you for being unabashedly yourself. Thank you for the countless kids you’ve inspired to take up this sport. Thank you for leaving the sport better than you’ve found it.

Over the past years of podcasting, there are clear attributes that I hope every guest I have on has. Some of these are that they are inspirational, well-thought-out, enthusiastic, joyful, lighthearted, and full of wisdom. Emily Cole checked every one of those boxes because of that, this is one of (if not the) favorite podcast I’ve ever recorded! Behind the 88k followers on Instagram and 7.8 million likes on TikTok is a genuinely amazing human being.

The 60-minute conversation that Emily and I had yesterday, is full of nuggets of wisdom. We dive into her wildly successful life from running, NIL, and her latest book, “The Players Plate”. We also touch on the importance of being well-rounded, why a strong support system is crucial in life, how her family has impacted her, life wisdom from her sister Julia Cole, and so so much more!

This episode is packed from beginning to end with inspirations and stories that will inspire you to chase after those goals in life. This conversation truly left me walking away with a smile on my face and I’m confident it will do the same for you (: I will be having another conversation with Emily later this month for a deeper dive into her book, “The Players Plate”. So stay tuned for that!

Until next time, enjoy my wonderful conversation with the wonderful and ever inspiring, Emily Cole!

Over the past year, Masai Russell has taken over not only on the track this past year, but also social media. As of writing this, she has 189k followers on Instagram. In high school, Masai was an Eight-Time National Champion and in addition to this, was a 2xNational Record holder. Currently while at the University of Kentucky she’s an 11-time All-American. She will be returning to Kentucky for one more year so watch out.

While many see Masai on social media or lighting up the track, very few actually see who she is beyond these things. In this podcast, we seek to understand Masai and her story better. You’ll hear insights and wisdom throughout this episode from Masai. I’ve interviewed very few guests over the years as wise as Masai is.

Many athletes run fast. Few are genuinely kind people and do good things off the track. Even fewer are both. Today’s guest, Cole Sprout, is undoubtedly both. In high school, Cole took down national records and is now crushing the competition with his team Stanford. Off the track, Cole is a genuinely great person and impacts those around him. In this conversation, Cole and I go all over the spectrum. We talk about his beginning in the start of running, what it was like to cement his legacy in Colorado, Stanford things, what he’d make Gordon Ramsay for dinner, and discuss if he’d ever steal Charles Hicks clout and start a YouTube channel. This is an enjoyable, lighthearted, and inspiring conversation! I hope you all enjoy this one as much as I did. P.S: I had the flu when I recorded with Cole, so excuse sick Dom. The majority of twenty-eight-year-olds are living a life of status quo. Very few branch out and make something new. At the age of twenty-eight James Perez & Wilkerson Given challenged the status quo and started Stoke Performance. A company that produces a world-class product and has a meaningful mission behind the product!

From our very first interaction, I was immediately very impressed with James & Wilkerson as people. Their hard work ethic and dedication from day 1 to this company have resulted in a world-class product that has helped so many people!

In this episode, James & Wilkerson dive into the origins of their relationship with each other. We talk about all things starting a company: the challenges that accompany it, lessons learned, fun stories, and more!

The most refreshing thing within a company is when the people are better than the product. I can certainly say that’s the case with Stoke Performance. One thing I can say confidently is that Stoke Performance is going to have a big impact in the coming years.

If you’re interested in using this product, you can get 10% of all products with code “THERUNNINGEFFECT”. In addition, we get a small commission from sales using that code so you are directly contributing to the future of this podcast!

Today’s conversation is one that will greatly help you in all aspects of life. How will it do that you might ask? Well, today’s conversation is all about the mind and mental performance. These things affect our daily lives and running more than we might think they do. Who better to have this conversation with than my good friend and mental performance counselor Shannon Thompson. Shannon currently has a Masters in Applied Positive Psychology. She works closely with many high-performing individuals every single day. Putting it best, “Her approach is science-based, philosophical, and spiritual. Many people want to be good at something. Very few put in the work to be good. My guest today on the podcast Wes Shipsey is someone who puts in hours of work each day in order to reach his potential. In his words, “You get out what you put in.” That’s the reason behind his 80-mile weeks and absurd workouts like 20x400 in an average of 61 seconds. Wes also ran his state meet with a fever of 103 degrees. I looked up the definition of dedicated and a picture of Wes came up.

Not only is Wes fast, but very well-spoken. I was very impressed with his in-depth responses to my questions and insight into his career so far. Wes currently attends Central Catholic high school, the Alma Mater of Galen Rupp. Keep your eyes out for Wes in the coming year as he chases after history.

In today’s episode of the podcast, I have the great privilege of speaking with Joel Ibler Lillesø. Joel has lighted the track on fire since he first started running for his country Denmark. Just in this last year, Joel is the European U20 champion and has run 13:29 in the 5k. Joel is on a quest to be the greatest runner of all time.

This episode was a blast. Joel has such a great personality and that definitely shows in this episode. We go through his story, breaking records, running in America, being compared to Jakob, and his future plans. If you don’t already, make sure you follow Joel. Saying this kid is the next Jakob Ingebrigtsen is an understatement.

On June 2, 2022, Connor Burns wrote his name into the history books by becoming the 15th high school American boy to break four minutes in the mile. His time of 3:58.83 puts him as the #7 at the distance all time.

Many were scratching their heads on the night of June 2. I was too. So I sent a message to Connor within seconds of him finishing to see if he’d be willing to do an interview. This podcast is a deep-dive into Connor’s history in the sport, his historic race on June 2, and his plans for the future. This episode is a fun and insightful one!

Looking to the future, Connor is far from satisfied. Alan Webb’s high school national record of 3:53.42 may only last one more year… As he stated on the podcast, “Kind of looking at that national record for Alan Webb. Definitely see if that’s in the cards or not, but definitely am eyeing that down…”

Next up, you can catch him doubling the distance in his pursuit of a national title at the Brooks PR 2-mile presented by @soundrunning

In today’s episode of the podcast, I have the great privilege of speaking with accomplished runner and writer, Matt Wisner.

Matt excels on and off the track. On the track, Matt graduated from the University of Oregon where he had a successful career. Off the track, Matt is an accomplished writer. He got his Master's Degree in Journalism. Matt has written many impressive pieces that have been featured in New Generation Track & Field’s magazine.

We also go through your listener questions! And of course, we go through the Coffee Club Pod beef and what Matt thinks of the 4xMile WR attempt. It was great having Matt on the podcast and hearing his story. Matt is full of enthusiasm for the sport and has a bright future ahead of him, both on and off the track.

Back for his third appearance on the podcast is the man, the myth, the legend, Sean McGorty. Sean is fresh off of making his first US national team in the 10k!

Last Friday, Sean placed third in USATF 10k National Championships. This race was as thrilling as they come. Sean was in sixth with 110m to go and he used a monster kick to make his dream come true of representing his country on a global stage.

Sean has had five significant surgeries in the last five years. When many people would have thrown in the towel, Sean kept working and dreaming. Setback after setback couldn’t hold Sean back. Some call him the King of Comebacks.

This episode was a really fun one! Sean and I both basically had a 47min conversation and it just happened to be recorded (: nothing too serious or formal, just two friends talking about some recent events! We also go through your listener questions. We even take one from the legend himself Mathew Centrowitz. Please like, subscribe, and share with your friends to help us out! On June 9, 2021, Olympian & American Record Holder Shelby Houlihan was banned from the sport of running for four years. Over the past 11 months, Shelby has done anything and everything to prove her innocence. She’s done things that cost a fortune just to try and bring back the thing she loves: competing and training at the highest level possible.

Despite mounting evidence helping prove her innocence, the AIU ruled Shelby Houlihan guilty of taking a performance-enhancing substance. This takes out four critical years of her career. As her coach, Jerry Schumacher says, “She just might be the best 1500m runner in the world this year, but we will never get the opportunity to find out. And that’s a tragedy.” Shelby has devoted her whole life to reaching the pinnacle of the sport. She’s gotten to where she is through hard work, passion, dedication, and a mindset like no other. Nowhere along the way has Shelby ever taken shortcuts or done anything illegal. At the youngest of ages growing up in Sioux City, Iowa, Shelby would tell her mom, “Mom, I’m going to be the best. I’m going to be somebody someday.”

The one thing Shelby has not been able to do is to speak publicly about her ban due to not wanting to upset the AIU during her appeals process. Over the past 11 months, Shelby, her teammates, and her family have all been subject to extraordinary slander and hatred. This episode is Shelby’s side of the story. What actually happened behind the scenes and how this process has affected her life.

You may disagree or not believe in Shelby, but I sincerely ask you to listen to this episode. You will benefit greatly from hearing Shelby’s vulnerability, heart, and openness in sharing her story. We could be here endlessly debating all the different facts of the case, evidence on both sides, and much more. But that’s not what we’re here to do. All we’re here to do is give Shelby an opportunity to share her heart, give her side of the story in full, and give her the opportunity to answer every misconception about the situation.

As Shelby’s coach Shalane Flanagan stated, “We are living in a nightmare that we can’t seem to wake up from.” I will always stand for those who I believe in. I believe in Shelby Houlihan and you should too. Shelby Houlihan is a hill I’m willing to die on.

She's also the Youth Club Director and a Nike Campus Coach. In addition to this, Emily is an Athlete Services Manager at Flynn Sports. In this episode, we go through all of this and more!

Emily chronicles her journey in the sport of running, the lessons it's taught her, and more. She then takes us through all the amazing work she does over at The Bowerman Track Club. Emily goes through her career in marketing and her journey to the positions she now holds. Emily is one of those people who is vital to the success of the athletes.

Every athlete I've talked to on BTC about Emily has talked about how hard-working and vital Emily is to the team. Many people see the results of the Bowerman Track Club, but don't see the people behind their success. One of the main people behind their success who gets little recognition is Emily.

Last, but not least, Emily talks about the BTC High School Running Camp! She goes through the creation of the camp and pitches the idea to all of you high schoolers to sign up.

Back for her fourth appearance on the podcast is Elise Cranny! Every episode I've done with Elise has gotten a big reception and I'm always personally impacted by her so I thought I'd get her back on.

In this episode Elise and I discuss subjects such as confidence, pressure, having fun with the sport, mental health, journaling, the importance of having a strong support system, and lots more! Elise drops so many nuggets of wisdom in this one.

Every episode I do with Elise I'm blown away by the amount of wisdom she brings. When people who have recently discovered the podcast ask me what episode they should listen to first, I always reply, "Any of the ones with Elise!". She is truly an amazing person who does so much good for so many people's lives.

Lastly, Elise is currently on a mission to raise $10k before May 27 for a non-profit organization called, "The Hidden Opponent". Less than 24 hours ago, Lex Young, a junior in high school, ran the second-fastest 5k ever by a US high schooler. In episode sixty-one of The Running Effect, I have the great privilege of speaking with Lex and Leo Young. While I'm sure 99% of you are familiar with them, for those that aren't, Lex and Leo are two of the greatest high school distance runners in history. And they're only juniors (:

Following in the footsteps of their older brother Nico, Lex and Leo run for Newbury Park High School. Newbury Park is debatably the greatest high school distance program ever. Since freshman year, Lex and Leo have completely rewritten the record books. If I were to write a list of their accomplishments I would run out of space on this post. The scary thing is that they're only juniors and have a whole nother year!

In this episode, we dive-deep into their start in the sport of running, all things Newbury Park, handling pressure from the outside world, future goals, and so much more! We also do a little twin trivia to find out which twin knows the other one the best! This episode is a really fun one and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. We also answer all your fun listener questions. They span from who would win in bare-knuckle boxing to how they balance school and running. This week's episode of the podcast is a very unique one. In July 2020, I started The Running Effect, and since then, I've had the great privilege of speaking to over 60+ amazing guests. Many of you who are avid listeners of the podcast probably don't know the origins of the podcast. So when my good friend Elise Cranny came to me with the idea of doing a show giving listeners an inside look at who I am and how The Running Effect started I couldn't pass! In this episode, we go through my start in the sport of running (which is actually quite hilarious), where the idea of starting a podcast came from, lessons learned from almost 60 episodes, and many other fun questions! I hope this episode will give you all an inside look at the inner workings of this podcast and what our future plans look like! Starting a podcast at 15 years old is far from normal, but I'm immensely glad I did. Being able to help fellow young runners in their pursuit of success is a very rewarding feeling. I hope to continue to push the sport forward through this podcast.

Lastly, a massive thank you to Elise for hosting this episode. She's been one of my biggest supporters from Day 1 and is constantly helping out behind the scenes. I joke that she's the CEO of the company, but twisting the meaning to Chief-Encouragement-Officer. Elise truly is one of the most selfless, encouraging, and kindest people I've ever had the privilege to know. One of the most important pieces of advice I was given early in life was to surround yourself with people who will push you to be the best version of yourself. Elise has certainly done that and then some! Not only has Elise helped me become a better human being, but has helped improve this podcast as well. Professional athletes will always say that they strive to be good athletes on and off the track, and Elise is the gold standard for that.

In episode fifty-seven of The Running Effect, I speak with Thomas Ratcliffe. In high school, Thomas was a phenomenal athlete. Some of the most notable accomplishments were a handful of state titles and running 4:01 in the mile (a Massachusetts state record). Not only did he excel in running, but also in soccer where he led his team to a state title. To my knowledge, he's the only boy to win a soccer state championship in the Fall and then run 4:01 in the mile the following Spring.

Thomas then went on to a successful career at Stanford. As a freshman, Thomas was named the PAC-12 Freshman of the Year. The few following seasons were spent rehabbing some serious injuries. After recovering from those, Thomas placed third at NCAAs in 2019 in the 5k. The following year, Thomas transferred to the University of North Carolina where he finished out his NCAA eligibility.

Following the NCAA outdoor championships last summer, Thomas signed with Nike and The Bowerman Track Club! He is currently a member of the team training for some big upcoming races in the next few months.

In this episode, we do a deep dive into Thomas's career from high school all the way up to the present day. We go through the ups, downs, and everything in-between! It was a pleasure getting to know Thomas and hear his story. I can't wait to see what this year has in store for him!

In episode fifty-five of The Running Effect, I speak with Anna Rohrer. In high school, Anna was a phenomenal athlete. She was a two-time Foot Locker National Champion and was the Gatorade Cross Country National Player of the year in 2014-2015.

Anna then went on to an extremely successful career at the University of Notre Dame where she was an 8-time All-American. At Notre Dame, Anna got an undergraduate degree in Neuroscience and a master's degree in business management.

Anna uses both the skills she learned as an athlete, and skills she learned from studying Neuroscience in both her jobs currently. Firstly, Anna is a mindset coach at a company called, "Dreamfuel". At Dreamfuel, Anna teaches high level companies the mental performance skills needed to maximize their performance. She also has her own company called, "Next Level Racing" where she trains athletes both physically and mentally.

In this episode, we do a massive deep dive into the mental performance world. We talk about and go through subjects such as: confidence, belief, pressure, goal-setting (and how dopamine affects it from a neurological standpoint), the importance of being process-oriented, the importance of failure, visualization, and so so much more! Whether you're the best runner in the country or the CEO of a company, the wisdom Anna shares in this episode is very applicable to everyday life.

As the GOATEliud Kipchoge says, “Athletics is not so much about the legs. It’s about the heart and mind.”

Colleen is a full-time physical therapist for Nike working closely with the renowned Bowerman Track Club. Before becoming a PT, Colleen was an accomplished soccer player at the University of Portland where she was a 2xNCAA champion (2002 & 2005). After she graduated college she started running and has actually won two marathons in her career. In this episode we dive deep into Colleen's incredible soccer career where she won two NCAA titles and the lessons she learned from her legendary Coach, Clive Charles. We then dive into her time at the Bowerman Track Club, helping Shalane Flanagan come back from knee surgery, the Olympics, fixing Grant Fisher's calf right before his 5k prelim, Project Eclipse, and so much more! Many people see the results of the Bowerman Track Club, but don't see the people behind their success. One of the main people behind their success who gets little recognition is Colleen. Colleen works day in and day out to make sure these athletes are healthy to maximize their potential! Colleen was also a vital part of "Project Eclipse". This project was for US distance legend Shalane Flanagan to run all six World Marathon Majors within 42 days. Colleen was there every single day helping with whatever Shalane needed. Shalane ended up finishing this momentous challenge and attributes a lot of her success to Colleen's care and guidance. In episode fifty-four of The Running Effect, I have the great privilege of speaking with Nico Young. Nico is undoubtedly one of the greatest prep stars that America has ever had. In high school, Nico cemented himself as one of the greatest high school runners ever (in my opinion he's the greatest). In just his senior year, he went undefeated all year and won NXN setting a course record along the way despite horrible conditions. He was also excellent in the classroom with a 4.68 GPA. Excelling both academically and in running, Nico won the 2019-2020 Gatorade Boys Cross Country & Track and Field Player of the Year. An award reserved for only the best of the best. Due to the pandemic, Nico never got the chance to compete his senior year track season which makes his high school career accolades all the more impressive!

After Nico graduated high school, he then went onto attend Northern Arizona University (NAU). At NAU, Nico has only continued to flourish. Within just two years, Nico is one of the top runners in the NCAA. Last summer Nico qualified for the US Olympic Trials placing 9th in the 5k final beating a handful of professionals. He has also placed top-ten at multiple NCAA championships and helped his team win team titles.

Nico currently holds the US High School National Records in the 2k & 3k and US U20 indoor and outdoor 5k records.

Many people see the results, but don't see all the work that went into the result. In this episode, we try to unpack Nico's successful career the best we can! We do a big deep dive into Nico's career from his start in the sport in fifth grade to his future in the sport. We talk about pressure, having a "process over outcomes" mindset, working on the mental side of running, working with two amazing coaches in his career (Mike Smith and Sean Brosnan), NCAA Championships, what makes NAU special, and so so much more!

It was an absolute pleasure to talk with Nico and get a deeper understanding of his journey in this sport! I can't wait to see what the future holds for him. The saying "The sky is the limit" is truly the case for Nico Young.

Nico's high school coach encapsulates just how special Nico is with this quote, "I don’t know when I will ever see another athlete with Nico’s talent or ability to push himself beyond his limits along with the curiosity to see how truly great he can be. He’s a once-in-a-lifetime athlete."

In episode fifty-three of The Running Effect, I speak with Vanessa Fraser. Vanessa is a very accomplished runner who runs for Nike & the Bowerman Track Club. She most notably holds personal bests of 31:52 (10k) and 14:48 (5k). In high school, Vanessa was a two-time state champion in the state of California and helped her team to reach the state tournament for the first time in school history. During her time at Stanford, she helped her team finish runner-up twice in the DMR and still holds the school record of 15:09 in the 5k. Vanessa's college coach Chris Miltenburg would tell his athletes to "leave the team in a better place than you found it". Vanessa certainly did that and her impact on the Stanford program is still felt to this day. After Vanessa graduated, she signed with Nike and The Bowerman Track Club.

In this episode we dive deep into Vanessa's career; the ups, the downs, and everything in-between! Vanessa has battled a lot of adversity in her career, from massive Achilles surgery to not performing as well as she would have liked to in many races. Vanessa shares invaluable insights on confidence, trying to be process-oriented, learning from teammates, goal setting, and so much more! Vanessa embodies the definition of grit. Grit as defined by renowned psychologist Angela Duckworth is having, "passion and perseverance for long-term goals." Vanessa's passion and perseverance for the sport of running is truly felt in this episode.

I personally can't wait to see what the future holds for Vanessa!

In episode fifty-two of The Running Effect, I speak with Micaela DeGenero. After battling Covid earlier this year, Micaela bounced back making her first-ever NCAA Indoor Championship meet. After qualifying for the final, she texted her boyfriend saying, "I just hope I don't get last place". Not only did she make the meet, but with a 61-second last lap won her first-ever NCAA title in dominant fashion.

In this episode we go through Micaela's backstory in the sport of running, her years of running at Michigan, why she thinks it's important to focus on achieving high marks in the classroom, what went into the decision to transfer to Colorado, how she's dealt with injuries and low confidence, her journey to making the NCAA meet, her championship race, and so much more!

It was an absolute pleasure getting to speak with Micaela for the first time and hear her inspiring story. Keep your eyes peeled for lots more of Micaela on the national stage!

In episode fifty of The Running Effect, I speak with my good friend Elise Cranny. Elise is quickly cementing herself as one of the greatest American Women distance runners of all time. Just within the past thirteen months, she has won her first Olympic Trials (in the 5k), competed in her first Olympics, set a new American Record in the indoor 5k (14:33), and the second time in American History in the 10k (30:14).

Some of the topics we cover in this episode include:

-Her Olympic experience from racing to the exotic food

-Her American Record in the 5k and #2 time in the 10k

-Her decision to donate her prize money from "The Ten" to the "Katie Myer Memorial Fund" and why we need to start discussing mental health more

-Her involvement in "Voice in Sport" and why she thinks it's important to give back to the sport

-In a culture that is so fixated on results, how she has tried to detach yourself from what others think

-What she thinks the biggest misconception about Bowerman Track Club is

-The biggest lessons she's learned from her teammates

The amount of wisdom and advice Elise provides in this episode is incredible. Elise is a phenomenal runner, but an even better human being. The impact she is having on and off the track is astounding!

In episode forty-nine of The Running Effect (with Dominic Schlueter), I speak with my good friend Sean McGorty.

In this episode, we go through Sean's crazy past year. In 2021, he got his feet wet (pun intended) in a new event the steeplechase, underwent his second-ever Achilles surgery, and narrowly fell short of making his first Olympic team.

I personally can't wait to see all that Sean has in store for 2022 and beyond! A quote from Winston Churchill that I think embodies Sean's mindset well, "Success is going from failure to failure without any loss of enthusiasm". Sean has sacrificed so much to get to the level he's at now and continues to have a positive and contagious attitude. He's gone through two massive Achilles surgeries, missed an Olympic team, and battled other adversity, but yet still keeps on fighting. Sean's fighting spirit is one of the most inspiring things I've ever seen.
