Slicko has met Mappo, the Merry Monkey, and he takes her to see what a circus is. Slicko is curious about everything and asks many questions while listening to the boys and men shout about ‘pink lemonade,’ ‘ice cream cones,’ and ‘peanuts.’ She had heard of peanuts from a squirrel who came from the city and talked about how children fed them peanuts. Slicko runs off when the circus men come after Mappo and starts to gather nuts when she hears a noise crashing through the forest. What could it be?

Ester is tired after a restless night of replaying the latest story over and over again in her head. She is not the only one who is moving slowly this morning as her brother says his eyes feel like they are full of dragon candy syrup. Her father is worried about her and wants her to get outside and play and make friends but Lucy prefers to stay inside because she is not the same as all the other cats.
