“We are going into a new phase of track and field. And with that new phase, there has to be a new element. The standard is shifting, it’s only a matter of time that the world record is in danger. I’m not saying by who, but I’m just saying that if the standard keeps on going lower… it’s only a matter of time before 19.9 will get you sixth.”

2x Olympian Joseph Fahnbulleh joins us live in Eugene after competing at the African Championships this past week. Joe takes us through his questionable experience at the African Champs, his journey traveling from Africa to Eugene to catch the last half of the U.S. Trials, his analysis on some of the sprinters + events to watch for at the Olympics, his prediction for the future of the sprints, and lots more. The track is HOT.

Okay, it’s actually quite pleasant by Eugene-in-June standards, with temperatures in the high 70s and a pleasant breeze that always seems to be a tailwind in Hayward Field. But the performances laid down last night in Day 8 of the Olympic Trials sure heated up the stadium — even in events where we’re not on finals yet.

For the first time in history, three men broke 13 seconds in the same 110m hurdles race as Grant Holloway picked up his second national title, made his second Olympic team, and clocked the fourth-fastest performance in history ahead of Freddie Crittenden and Daniel Roberts’s lifetime bests. Five men broke 20 seconds in the 200m semifinals led by Noah Lyles’s wind-aided 19.60, and another epic battle between Gabby Thomas and Sha’Carri Richardson is set up in the women’s 200m final.

While middle-distance rounds can sometimes get tactical, they sure didn’t tonight. It took 4:05.36 to make the final of the women’s 1500m, and the “heavy hitters” heat did not disappoint with Nikki Hiltz making a statement with a 4:01.40 win and five finishes at 4:02.14 or faster. The 1500m final will be absolutely stacked, and in the mixed zone competitors were suggesting that it may make times well under 4 minutes just to make the team.

In the men’s 800m, it’s clear that qualifying for the Games in the 1500m has lifted a weight off Hobbs Kessler’s shoulders, as he seems to be absolutely elated in each round of racing and led all semifinal qualifiers with a huge personal best of 1:43.71. Kessler skipped the 1:44s entirely as his PB heading into this weekend was 1:45.07.

It’s now officially the weekend and, bittersweetly, our final two days of action, so make sure you don’t miss any of these incredible competitions over the last few finals. If we’ve learned anything form the action we’ve seen so far, we’re in store for something very, very fast in multiple events.

CITIUS MAG LIVE From Eugene! will bring you daily interviews with athletes, coaches and notable folks in town at noon PT each day. Our guests for day three of the Olympic Trials include Nico Young, Payton Otterdahl, Kendall Ellis, and Matthew Wilkinson.

Did you miss us?!

The U.S. Olympic Trials are back and better than ever in the second half of the 8-day program, with incredible drama, upsets, and underdog stories across the board.

The race of the day (and perhaps the week?) was the women’s steeplechase, where a fast early pace and a topsy-turvy final lap ended with a whole slew of personal bests and rewriting of the record books. Tokyo Olympian Val Constien ended up on top thanks to a phenomenal final 400m, running 9:03.22 to PR by 11 seconds and land at #3 on the U.S. all-time list. Constien had ACL surgery last year and after a long road back is better than ever.

We got our first peeks at the 400m hurdles crew, and the main takeaway from the first round is that Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone and Rai Benjamin are looking like world beaters out for an easy jog. McLaughlin-Levrone in particular shut it down entirely over the final two laps and still ran 53.07, the third-fastest performance in the world this year behind her own season’s best and Femke Bol’s world lead.

Speaking of first looks, Erriyon Knighton doesn’t seem to have missed a step as he ran his first 200m in four months, cruising through the first round with a 20.15 just behind Noah Lyles’s 20.10 in an earlier heat. And a stacked final is set for the 5000m, where reigning U.S. champ Abdi Nur takes on two of the three members of Team USA in the 10,000m, the 1500m Trials champ, and two NCAA champs.

The middle-distance rounds will continue to get more and more cutthroat, with the women’s 1500m featuring Elle St. Pierre, Heather MacLean, Cory McGee, Emily MacKay, Elise Cranny, Nikki HiltzSinclaire Johnson, and more heading to the semis and Olympians Bryce Hoppel and Clayton Murphy looking ready to once again do battle in the 800m.

“I will forever bet on myself no matter what. If my gut is telling me something’s going wrong, I'm going to make sure it’s going right. I'm always going to bet on myself no matter what… And that’s been paying off my entire career."

Fred Kerley joins us live in Eugene after finishing third in the 100m at the U.S. Olympics Trials to book his ticket to another Olympic Games. From switching events to switching sponsors to trusting his fitness, Fred Kerley is always going to bet on himself. “I know I made the right decision, but I don't even think it was a matter of if I made the right or wrong decision because either way I was going to make it be the right decision. I was going to force it to be the right decision. I feel like that’s what we had to do. There were so many question marks coming into this year, this Olympic Trials. “Leading up to the Trials, I was in phenomenal shape. I was putting together quite a few consistent races. But getting 4th, I just feel like I beat myself. Not even trying to be funny, those guys didn’t beat me – I beat myself because of the way I ran in the semi compared to what I ran in the final. I think I left like a half second out there… It was a great battle. I still feel like I finished really hard to get that third spot, but those guys got the best of me.”

“I'm still processing everything. It still very much feels like a dream. “This year has just been so, so hard. My coaches and those around me can attest to that. There were a lot of days where I was like, ‘Track’s not fun anymore. Is this worth it? I don’t think this is going to work.’ The emotions coming from there to be like, ‘Wow, we really did this’ just all flooded out of me.”

Anna Hall joins us live in Eugene after winning the heptathlon title at the U.S. Olympic Trials, less than a year after undergoing knee surgery. Anna chats with us about the obstacles she overcame over the past few months to become the U.S. champion, the emotion she and her family shared together post-competition, and even gives us a peek inside her journal where she captured her thoughts throughout the meet. Hear more from Anna on her incredible comeback in this episode of the CITIUS MAG Podcast.

“Coach Joe Lee, he kept me on a level-mind: ‘Just go out there and run your race. You’re just as good, you’ve done so many things. Just keep focusing.’ That’s what I was doing. I was focusing on the race and what I could have done. When I came out of lane two, I was like, ‘You’ve only got one chance. This is the last final. This could be your last open 400 of the season.’ I gave it everything I had.”

“I think silent killer is perfect for me. I put so much energy and effort into this. I’ve really been pursuing greatness, so when I get out there and don't do what I want to do, it’s clear. You can see it on my face that I'm not happy. I try to be grateful and take everything in, but at the same time I always want more and I know what I'm capable of.”

Keturah Orji, 10x U.S. champion and American record holder, joins the show after qualifying for her 3rd Olympic team in triple jump. Keturah breaks down her triple jump performance at the Trials, what she’s learned from triple jumpers who came before her, how she wants to give back to the sport after finishing her career, and more. Hear more from Keturah in this episode of the CITIUS MAG Podcast.

“Track is such a different world. Marathoners are so hyper-focused. If I go to the Boston Marathon, I really can’t go many places, because a lot of people will recognize me. But something like track, I get to be like any other track fan out here. I’ll get noticed every once in a while, but for the most part, people are here to watch Sha’Carri.”

Molly Seidel, Olympic bronze medalist in the marathon, joins the show to share about her experience in the marathon world compared to the track and field world, how she’s working with PUMA on improving their shoe technology, her predictions for the Trials, and lots of banter, of course. “It’s better than going out and doing a 10K tempo on Pre’s Trail and coming away with nothing. There’s no money for a tempo run. I’ll go do it in a track stadium with a bunch of fast guys, taper a little bit, come away with a couple grand or something… I’m like, ‘It can go bad 400 in and I can just step off, I get front row seats to a 10K final and I’m already on the Olympic team.’”

“Occasionally we do a really hard workout, but most of the time we just try to stay even-keeled. Two months of consistent training is better than three weeks with two hard workouts but then you're taking a week off because you're dinged up or sore… We really thought, let’s run the 5K pretty hard, I don't necessarily know if [Elle St. Pierre] ran all-out when she ran 14:32, but we wanted to see what it felt like to run a hard 1500 a week later, because [Prefontaine Classic] was going to be hard.”

“That’s what I was telling myself the whole time. I was just so committed to racing as hard as I can, and I was just like, ‘I think I can compete with those guys.’ I had that mindset the whole race. I was like, ‘I don't care if I get fourth, I don't even care if I get second or third and don't get to go.’ It was about conquering the disbelief that I've had the last few years that I could compete with those guys. Nothing beats the drama of the U.S. Trials. Unlike many other countries, which select their teams based on a combination of championship results and committee decisions, Team USA sets its team in the most objective way possible: top three at the Trials make the team. Of course, those athletes need to have achieved the Olympic standard or World ranking, so there still might be some numbers to crunch while athletes are handed those little American flags, but in most cases, it’s simple. You’ve got to perform your best on the day to book your ticket.

In this episode, Chris Chavez and David Melly break down everything you need to know about the distance events at the U.S. Olympic Trials.

"What's exciting is that in this new role, I'm able to bring athletes and fans what they've been asking for and just screaming out for – more head-to-head matchups, more fans getting to know these athletes, athletes able to connect better with their fans, athletes being able to realize more value for themselves. Fans are frustrated that they're hearing these stories that the athletes, who they love to support, are frustrated that they’re not able to capitalize on their greatness. So with Grand Slam Track, I'm able to bring that to fans and athletes. That brings a smile. It makes me happy."

Michael Johnson is one of the greatest sprinters of all-time with his 12 gold medals. However, he joins me as the new commissioner of Grand Slam Track. Michael is on a mission to revive his beloved sport, track and field, which has long struggled to capture the U.S. public's attention outside of the Olympics. Grand Slam is set to debut in 2025.

This league aims to engage fans with a TV-friendly format, spotlighting the sport's biggest stars, and drawing new audiences through compelling storytelling. I speak for CITIUS MAG in sharing our excitement to be partnering with the league to share in their mission on athlete storytelling and we’ll be helping them with our own resources and expertise to connect them with our super loyal and engaged track and field diehard audience.

With a significant investment exceeding $30 million, Michael is determined to bring the essence of the sport to the forefront, putting athletes center stage like never before.

Grand Slam Track will host four annual Slams in global cities – starting in April 2025. Los Angeles will serve as the league's home, hosting one of these exciting events. The league has already signed its first star racer, 400m hurdles Olympic champion Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone. In my conversation with Michael, we talk about the fan’s frustration around now watching some of the top stars compete more and how this aims to change much of that.

Each year, 48 elite athletes will be named GST Racers, competing across various categories and vying for substantial prize money.

Hear a bit more about Michael's vision for the future of track and field and the challenges he's tackling. We'll delve into how this new league plans to fit in among the existing competitions like the Diamond League and leverage the excitement of the upcoming Paris Olympics and the Netflix series to galvanize support from fans and athletes alike.

"This particular conversation, I did cry more. It was the most pivotal moment of my life. I was just telling her, ‘This is my breakthrough moment.’ I told her that before this even happened… I told her, ‘Just let me feel you, let me know that you're here.’ And she did in the blocks."

McKenzie Long of Ole Miss swept the sprint titles with victories in the 100 meters, 200 meters and anchoring the 4x100 meters. All of that happened in a span of about 90 minutes. Her winning time in the 200 meters of 21.83 seconds is the fastest in the world as we head into the U.S. Olympic Trials. She has a very strong chance of qualifying for Team USA and making the Olympic team, if she finishes in the top three of either individual event.

After one of the races in Eugene, McKenzie got emotional on-air on ESPN while dedicating her win to her mother, who died during this past indoor season. In this episode, McKenzie opens up about how she grieved and coped with the loss while in the middle of a season. She shares how she sees and feels her mother’s presence with her daily.

A beautiful photo captured by photographer Kane Nguyen went viral where she’s sitting in the bleachers at Hayward Field with her head down, reflecting and connecting with her mother. She tells us about that photo and a surprise she had when she got into the blocks before the 100 meters.

"You never know what you can do until you're going out and doing it. You have no shot at running fast unless you give yourself an opportunity to run fast. If you go out in a race slow, how are you going to run fast if you’re already not going out hard enough? I think that’s just kind of given me the confidence that, ‘You can do it.’"

The University of Virginia star stole the show on the final day of the NCAA Championships with a crazy kick in the 800 meters. Cohen went from last to first in the final 100 meters, clocking a personal best of 1:44.97.

Cohen’s journey is nothing short of inspirational. Just a year ago, he was virtually unknown, running for Division II University of Tampa and struggling to regain his form after a stress fracture in his femur. Despite a personal best of 1:48, he never broke 1:53 in six 800-meter races last spring. With results like these, Division I interest for his fifth year wasn’t extreme. But University of Virginia coaches Vin Lananna and Trevor Dunbar saw something special in Cohen’s kick and decided to take a chance on him.

Throughout the 2024 season, Cohen showed remarkable improvement, running 1:47 in April and third at the ACCs with a 1:46 in May. He ran 1:45 at regionals. Even after these impressive times, he was still largely overlooked heading into the NCAA Championships. That all changed during the prelims, where Cohen showcased an insane burst of speed, going from last to first in the final straight. That video caught my attention and some of the track internet community.

In the final, Cohen replicated his prelims strategy and ran close to even splits and finishing in 1:44.97. His racing style drew comparisons to Robby Andrews, who won the 2011 NCAA 800 title in similar fashion for the same school. Although Cohen was only ten years old during Andrews’ iconic race, he now finds himself following in those legendary footsteps.

Also, it's about my teammates. When I make the team I know my teammates will also want to make the team because I am one of the leaders in our platoon. If you see the leader making the team, you want to make it too...It's not about me. It's about representing other people who are looking up to me. I'm so happy. I'm grateful. I can't wait to represent Team USA and represent the Army too."

Finally! After four months of stress and uncertainty, Leonard Korir is heading to the Olympics. Just last week, World Athletics added one universality place and four rankings places to the Olympic marathon field on Tuesday. With that, Korir gets the United States’ final spot – thanks to CJ Albertson’s ranking unlocking it – and he will be racing on Aug. 10th.

Korir was third at the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials, which was awesome because he had just missed the U.S. Olympic marathon team for Tokyo by just three seconds. This will be his second Olympic team after representing the United States in the 10,000m in Rio de Janeiro back in 2016.

Following the Trials, Korir went to Rotterdam in April in hopes of getting under the Olympic standard but faded in the second half of the race to a 2:12:47 finish. We discuss that race, his preparations for Paris and why this means a lot not just to him but also to his fellow members of the U.S. Army.

We waited until it was official to get Lenny on the podcast. Now we’ve completed the set. We have podcasts with all six of the U.S. Olympians for Paris + the two alternates (Jess McClain and Elkanah Kibet, who have amazing stories) – you can go back and listen to those race recaps and reflections.

Time Stamps:
5:44 - How he’s feeling after officially qualifying for the U.S. Olympic team.
7:56 - How he and his coach structured his training after the Olympic Marathon Trials.
10:07 - Reflecting on his race at the Marathon Trials.
14:12 - What qualifying for his second Olympic team means to him.
15:44 - How he fits in his training while serving in the army.
17:21 - How training has been going leading into the Olympics.
19:40 - His running career trajectory.
23:06 - Thoughts on the Olympic Marathon course.
28:28 - His goals and mindset for the Olympic Marathon.

We just wrapped up a jam-packed weekend with track and field taking place in Eugene with the NCAA Championships, Portland for the Portland Track Festival, Rome for the European Championships and New York City for the NYC Grand Prix.

NYC GRAND PRIX

Lots of action to recap including Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone giving the 400m American record a scare; Noah Lyles clocked a 19.77 into the wind, Eric Holt goes viral after taking 2022 world champion Jake Wightman to the line in the 1500m, Elaine Thompson Herah may be seriously injured after pulling up after the 100m. But the biggest story was 2022 World champion Fred Kerley and his sponsor Asics decided to part ways. Kerley came out onto the track wearing a competitor's product. Kerley did not end up racing after slipping in the blocks twice. He was not disqualified but elected not to race.

NCAA Championships

From McKenzie Long and Parker Valby to Shane Cohen and Parker Wolfe, we look at some of the collegiate stars who could be poised for a breakthrough to make the U.S. Olympic team in just a few weeks.

"I think anyone who has run, who has made running a part of their life, knows that it really does transform us as people. No matter what it is that we want to accomplish in life, we think that it makes everybody better by creating that habit of being physically active, moving your body, whether it's physical health or mental health. So we're hoping that this new way of talking about our mission and what we do will draw more people into the sport, into our community, and get people moving."

My guest for this episode is NYRR Rob Simmelkjaer, who also has a podcast of his own – Set The Pace. We’re at a point where we’ve got his boom happening. More than ever before, people are getting into running, joining clubs/crews/teams/training groups. NYRR puts on countless events in the city. I’m biased and think it’s got the best running community in the world.

So let’s take a look at the state of running and how someone like Rob and NYRR are striking that balance to accommodate so many people. Plus, we touch on his experience as an executive at ESPN and on-air talent at NBC has helped with the storytelling side to bridge the gap between the everyday runner and the elites.

12:20 - What he hopes to accomplish as CEO of NYRR + core pillars of NYRR’s mission.

16:17 - The direction he hopes to steer NYRR towards.

18:47 - How working at ESPN and NBC Sports helped prepare him for his role at NYRR.

22:27 - His thoughts on how to bridge the gap between elite runners and everyday runners in the running community.

25:46 - How he got into the sport of running.

28:34 - How working for NYRR rekindled his love for running.

31:05 - Thoughts on how to continue growing the running community.

33:22 - The role of running groups in helping grow the sport.

Recapping all of the biggest results from the Edwin Moses Legends Meet, Oslo Diamond League, Stockholm Diamond League and Racers Grand Prix.

Highlights and Topics Include:

– World Athletics officially announced the 2026 global championship that they’ve been teasing for a while. It will be called the World Athletics Ultimate Championship and is offering up $10M in prize money with $150,000 going to the winners of each respective event. Think of it as a more compact World Championships – semis and finals for the track events / straight finals for the field events with more money and over less days. The inaugural version of the championships will be three evening sessions from Sept. 11 through Sept. 13, 2026 in Budapest. It will be every two years after that.

– Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone is back over hurdles and looks like she never left with the easiest-looking 52.70 in Atlanta. Anderson was on-site and will give us a report of what he took away from the meet.

– The Oslo and Stockholm Diamond Leagues took place so we also got to see Femke Bol open up with a 53.07. Mondo Duplantis gave his world record a scare again. Jakob Ingebrigtsen dove for the win in 3:29.74. The ageless wonder of Hagos Gebriwhet went 12:36.73. Shericka Jackson started looking like herself a bit more with a win in Stockholm.

– Over in Jamaica, we finally got the hot times to the 100m that we’ve been hoping for. Julien Alfred went 10.78, which is the fastest time by a pro this year. Extra fireworks on the men’s side as Jamaica’s Oblique Seville took down world champion Noah Lyles 10.82 to 10.85. This is getting good.

"I basically started my comeback then and said, let's try to get as much fitness as we can until October. I had this whole theory. You know how Norwegian threshold training is so ‘in’? I was like, this basically is threshold training because the only thing [the doctors] tell you is, ‘don't get your heart rate over 85%.’ So I was like, ‘I'm just the pregnant Jakob.’ I'm glad I kind of tempered it. I didn't actually do double threshold, but we did a lot of threshold work… My theme was like, ‘Well, I would never in my career otherwise have two years to do threshold training, so why not now?’"

Kate Grace is in the midst of what most mid-30-somethings with a young child could only dream of – a late-career resurgence as a professional athlete. After a 2021 outdoor campaign that saw her go on a sub-two tear across the Diamond League circuit after just missing an Olympic team, Grace’s training and racing was derailed by a bout of injury and long Covid. She then became a mother, giving birth to her son in March of 2023. But now, here we are in May of 2024 and she’s got a fighter’s chance at an Olympic berth in the 800m once again.

Grace joined the podcast to talk about the past three years of her life, the ups, the downs, and her unique take on training at the moment. It’s always fun to hear about an athlete who is taking a different approach to the sport, and it’s even more enjoyable when that athlete is so candid in discussing their experimentations with training.

Time stamps:

4:45 - What’s kept her in the sport for so long.

6:28 - Why she took a break from competing and the reasons she returned to it.

8:24 - How she dealt with long COVID + how she trained throughout her pregnancy.

15:01 - How she’s approaching training + her mindset heading into the rest of the season.

17:50 - Reflecting on her 800m opener at the LA Grand Prix.

19:56 - Why she’s going all-in on training for the 800m

21:54 - Her perspective on how the women’s 800m scene has evolved.

23:09 - Her 800m racing strategy.

24:54 - Unpacking her experience training with Team Boss and Joe Bosshard + her experience coaching herself.

28:48 - What a typical week of training looks like for her.

31:04 - Sharing her experience with “The Track Club” in Boulder.

32:27 - Where her next few races will be leading up to the U.S. Trials.

33:19 - Her interest in coaching.

34:40 - How long she intends to continue running professionally.

36:05 - How she wants the rest of her running career to unfold.

It was a race for the ages. The Prefontaine Classic Bowerman Mile delivered on the hype with 9 men breaking 3:50 and reigning World champ Josh Kerr taking down reigning Olympic champ Jakob Ingebrigtsen 3:45.34 to 3:45.60.

No amount of trash talk can trump results, and Kerr has not lost to Ingebrigtsen since June of last year.

Chris Chavez, Mac Fleet and Karen Lesiewicz had to record a podcast about it immediately after.

We also talk about:

– Keely Hodgkinson shows the world why she’s the one to watch in the women’s 800m, clocking a world leading 1:55.78 and defeating reigning World champ Mary Moraa.

– Diribe Welteji clocks her fourth sub-4 of the season with a 3:53.75 victory in the 1500m, leading 6 athletes under 4 and holding off a hard-charging Jessica Hull (3:55.97, Australian record).

– Elle St. Pierre keeps her incredible 2024 season rolling with a big 3:56.00 personal best in the 1500m, good for 3rd place. St. Pierre moves up from #6 to #2 on the U.S. all-time list. More takeaways from the 1500m.
