Saturday morning brought a shock wave to college basketball: Wake Forest fired Danny Manning. We fired up the podcast machine to get an emergency episode to you. The show opens with reactions to Manning getting canned after six years, including an outrageous buyout that’s reportedly north of $15 million. Then Parrish and Norlander get to the four candidates (16:30) most likely to replace Manning. That’s not all. We had big recruiting news on Friday afternoon when Greg Brown (34:30) said no to $400,000 and the G League and opted to play for Shaka Smart and Texas.

Jalen Green, who is almost universally regarded as a top-three prospect in the class of 2020, announced Thursday that he'll be skipping college and instead plans on playing in the G League next season (whenever next season arrives). He'll be paid somewhere in the neighborhood of $500,000 to do so. It's the most aggressive move the NBA has made to entice highly ranked prospects to skip college, or other professional opportunities, and stay in the States on the way to ideally becoming an NBA player. Two projected top-five teams lost players to NBA draft declarations in the past couple of days: Creighton with Ty-Shon Alexander and Kentucky with Immanuel Quickley. Neither is a stunner, but both are expected to remain in the draft pool, which easily pokes both out of Parrish's way-too-early rankings. This pod opens up with some chatter on those decisions, and then at the 11:40 mark an exploration into what it means for teams with national championship aspirations to have top-60 prospects opt to return to school. From there, how about this: Stanford just beat out blue bloods and got its highest-ranked commitment from a player in more than 15 years (20:10). A nice change of pace. It included wiretaps of Arizona coach Sean Miller and LSU coach Will Wade discussing pay-for-play schemes with former runner, and convicted felon, Christian Dawkins. Thursday, March 12, 2020. A day that will live in college sports infamy due to the necessary/unprecedented action of canceling not only the Divions I men’s basketball tournament, but all NCAA-sanctioned events for the remainder of the academic year. Sports as we know it are on hiatus for at least a month. It is an odd time. There is so much to discuss. And suddenly this is the season-ending episode of the Eye on pod. Gary Parrish and Matt Norlander spend the first 80% of this episode discussing the dozens of takeaways from what’s happened in college basketball in the past 48 hours, but also giving shoutout after shoutout to so many of the great stories, players and angles to this season — and how they were all vaporized on Thursday. Congrats to Utah State and Belmont for officially earning their way in. This special Sunday morning podcast touches on 20-plus games/results on a loaded Saturday, the first 45 minutes of which involve Gary Parrish and Matt Norlander zipping around the country and giving their thoughts on the biggest wins, worst losses, seed shifts, bubble movement. It's a special loaded hump day edition of the pod. Tuesday night brought a litany of interesting stories, big results and major talking points. More than 10 ranked teams fell over the weekend, including Maryland’s first home loss of the season, which came to Michigan State. Since Norlander as on the scene, he and Parrish open on that and have a hefty discussion on the teams before moving on to Kentucky (26:30) beating Auburn, UCLA (36:30) continuing one of the most unpredictable in-season turnarounds ever and all those top-10 teams losing (49:30), led by Duke, which is somehow still refusing to fall in multiple metrics.
