Yahoo Fantasy Forecast: Draft Edition

Matt Harmon and Dalton Del Don are here to talk about all the major fantasy trends heading into Week 4 on the latest episode of the Yahoo Fantasy Football Forecast!

First and foremost, Matt & Dalton discuss Tuesday’s breaking news that eight members of the Tennessee Titans organization have tested positive for COVID-10 and that both the Titans and Vikings (their Week 3 opponent) would be barred from in-person team activities for the time being. As that story develops, keep it tuned to the podcast as well as @YahooFantasy on Twitter.

Next, Matt and Dalton dive into the stats they love with the top-five running backs with the highest percentage of their team’s yards from scrimmage, including Alvin Kamara, James Robinson, Dalvin Cook, Austin Ekeler, and Derrick Henry (4:10).

There’s also some hype surrounding Darrell Henderson Jr. and Nick Foles, who’ve seen their roles changed, so Matt and Dalton discuss their outlooks. (13:00)

Unfortunately, there are some trends they don’t like too, like the Saints defense sucking and Drew Brees looking washed, cooked & all-around finished. (22:35)

They also discuss some buy-low wideouts you might want to make a trade for in your league (27:00), if Calvin Ridley has overtaken Julio Jones as Atlanta’s WR1 (33:35) and some bottom five defenses in passing and rushing success (35:20).

Finally, Matt and Dalton engage in their new segment titled “Who Got Shelled,” where they discuss a defense that got absolutely bombarded the prior week. While they lament the Baltimore defense getting flattened by Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs, they also point out two defense they’d expect to get shelled in Week 4. (41:00)

Everyone... and I mean everyone... is heading to the waiver wire after yet another injury-riddled weekend in the NFL. Andy Behrens and Scott Pianowski go through each position to give you the players the experts are picking up to salvage their season. 

Needless to say, running back will be a huge need for many this week. Andy and Scott both agree on the one available player you should target to replace Barkley and McCaffrey. 

The wide receiver position also suffered key injuries. Is it about time we put more stock into the Jacksonville offense? The guys stay in the AFC South for your go-to tight end option as well.

First up, our analysts discuss some of the biggest Week 1 trends from the opening act. Some we love: The Seahawks becoming a most pass-heavy team and allowing themselves to #LetRussCook, the Bills cutting loose with play-action passes (tops in the NFL in Week 1!), Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Austin Ekeler being top-10 in RB routes run (breathe Ekeler managers, breathe), Diontae Johnson commanding targets in the Steelers receiving corps, and Gardner Minshew being almost perfect.

There were some trends we hated too, though, like the bottom-five teams in early down success rate (yikes, Eagles), the results for Odell Beckham Jr., Nick Chubb, James Conner, Tom Brady, and Dallas’ offensive line.

Next up, Matt and Dalton’s new segment titled “Who Got Shelled,” where they discuss a defense or defensive player who got absolutely shelled the prior week, then they’ll dive into the data and point out the defensive matchups you might want to take advantage of the following Sunday. In Week 1, whoever was guarding or trying to guard DeAndre Hopkins and Davante Adams definitely got shelled! Our analysts also reveal who they think will get shelled in Week 2.

Matt Harmon and Dalton Del Don are here to talk all things football on the latest episode of the Yahoo Fantasy Football Forecast — and we’re just two days from Week 1 kickoff!

First up, our analysts discuss some of the big transactions ahead of Week 1 action, like Adrian Peterson's return to the NFC North and whether Washington naming J.D. McKissic their starting running back has shaken our confidence in Antonio 'CMC 2.0' Gibson.

The Chicago Bears named Mitch Trubisky the starter, while Kareem Hunt and DeAndre Hopkins both got nice extensions with one reportedly on the way for Alvin Kamara.

Next up, Matt and Dalton debut a new segment titled “Who Got Shelled,” where they’ll discuss a defense or defensive player who got absolutely shelled the prior week, then they’ll dive into the data and point out the defensive matchups you might want to take advantage of the following Sunday.

Since this is Week 1, Matt and Dalton will take this segment to look ahead at matchups they believe will be pretty lopsided on Sunday. Matt goes with the Bills passing game vs. the Jets secondary, while Dalton thinks the 49ers’ passing game is going to have a field day against the Cardinals secondary.

First up, some news that scared probably everyone in the fantasy community: Miles Sanders got hurt in training camp with what is being called a “lower-body injury.” He’s been labeled week-to-week with the injury, and the talented RB will reportedly be ready for Week 1. Should fantasy managers be worried about Sanders, Yahoo’s consensus RB10?

Next, Ben and Dalton get into some advanced stats, including the specific ones they look at, what those stats measure, and what they miss.what advanced stats do you look at? What do they measure? For most people, taking a running back with your first-round pick is a no-brainer. Seven-plus players in most analysts’ first-round rankings are usually running backs. That said, the Zero RB strategy has gained momentum in recent seasons. Andy and Denny kick off the podcast discussing how to execute a proper Zero RB draft along with its pros and cons. (1:50)

Diving into the different tiers of RBs, Andy & Denny discuss who they consider the top backs behind Christian McCaffrey, the pitfalls of drafting Derrick Henry and at which point in the first round should you start considering a wide receiver like Michael Thomas instead. (11:00)

Overall, there are around 14 running backs being drafted in the top 25 picks of Yahoo drafts, among those names like Miles Sanders and Austin Ekeler. Who among that tier should you absolutely reach for or definitely avoid? (16:00)

Moving onto rounds three through six, there are a minefield of backs like Mark Ingram and James Conner, which names in this class are worth spending that draft capital on? (25:50)

Every year, a team like the 2019 Tampa Bay Buccaneers comes along, putting up massive point totals on offense while being a turnstile on defense, forcing teams to throw the ball to a narrow group of players to keep pace and ensuring fantasy gold for all involved.

Who will be those carnival teams this year? Here are Scott Pianowski’s picks:

Detroit Lions: The ball will be going to Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jr. early and often. Did you know Matthew Stafford was QB4 last year in points per game? (06:25)

Atlanta Falcons: The Matt Ryan/Julio Jones connection has been around for a decade, but are there enough passes to go around for Calvin Ridley and newcomer Hayden Hurst? (13:15)

Carolina Panthers: Consensus RB1 Christian McCaffrey is still a star, and while Teddy Bridgewater might not be peak Cam Newton, the improvement over Kyle Allen is good news for DJ Moore and Curtis Samuel. (20:30)

Seattle Seahawks: Pete Carroll and co. rarely let Russell Wilson show off his arm and make plays on the ground, but in a division with San Francisco and Arizona, relying on Wilson, Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf might be the only way to keep up. (25:05)

Jacksonville Jaguars: We know Gardner Minshew II’s DGAF play-style can lead to big games, but is there anyone other than DJ Chark that fantasy managers can depend on? (32:40)

Miami Dolphins: Ryan Fitzpatrick will make way for Tua Tagovailoa at some point, but a massive second-half from DeVante Parker, a tight end primed for a breakout in Mike Gesicki and a returning Preston Williams who put up sneaky value last year could mean a lot of high scoring games. (37:25)

Recently, Mauricio wrote about where the first pick fantasy drafts usually ends up at the end of the season — and the results aren’t pretty. In the last decade, only three RBs who were top picks ended up repeating as a top-5 RB, that was Arian Foster in 2012, Adrian Peterson in 2015 and Todd Gurley in 2018. None of those RBs repeated as RB1 the next year:
