On today's solo episode....

Neurodegeneration and brain aging affect millions worldwide, with numbers expected to triple by 2050. While pharmaceuticals offer limited solutions, lifestyle choices, especially exercise and diet, are vital for brain health.

Study 1: Chronic Inflammation and Cognitive Performance The CARDIA study tracked inflammation in young adults and found chronic inflammation can impair midlife cognitive performance. Participants with high CRP levels were significantly more likely to have poor processing speed and executive function. Early management of inflammation is crucial for cognitive health.

Study 2: Smoking and Cognitive Decline A Nature Communications study of 32,000 adults revealed smoking accelerates cognitive decline by up to 85% over 10 years. Smokers who adopted healthy behaviors like exercise and socializing had cognitive decline rates similar to non-smokers, highlighting the importance of quitting smoking and healthy living.

Study 3: Diets Rich in Omega-3s and Antioxidants A study found older adults with diets rich in omega-3s, antioxidants, and vitamins show slower brain aging and better cognitive function. Nutrients like alpha-linolenic acid, EPA, lutein, zeaxanthin, vitamin E, and choline are crucial for brain health, emphasizing the role of diet in cognitive maintenance.

  • Key strategies for muscle hypertrophy and the importance of total daily protein intake.
  • The role of muscle as an endocrine organ in longevity and health.
  • The dynamic cycle of muscle protein synthesis and breakdown for muscle maintenance and growth.
  • The integration of resistance training and nutrition for optimal muscle development.
  • Comparing plant and animal proteins for muscle synthesis.
  • Debunking the "anabolic window" myth, emphasizing total daily protein intake over precise timing.
  • Practical recommendations for resistance training,  including strategies for increasing strength.
  • Gender and age considerations in muscle protein synthesis and the importance of resistance training for older adults.

Dr. Nathan Bryan earned his undergraduate Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from the University of Texas at Austin and his doctoral degree from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in Shreveport where he was the recipient of the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Research. He pursued his post-doctoral training as a Kirschstein Fellow at Boston University School of Medicine in the Whitaker Cardiovascular Institute. After a two year post-doctoral fellowship, in 2006 Dr. Bryan was recruited to join faculty at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston by Ferid Murad, M.D., Ph.D., 1998 Nobel Laureate in Medicine or Physiology. During his nine years at UT, Dr. Bryan focused on drug discovery, screening natural product libraries for active compounds. His research led to over a dozen US and international patents. Notably, he was the first to describe nitrite and nitrate as essential nutrients for cardiovascular health and demonstrated an endocrine function of nitric oxide. He discovered compositions that generate and restore nitric oxide in humans, validated by six clinical trials. In this episode, we cover: - The role of nitric oxide in maintaining cardiovascular and brain health. - How nitric oxide production declines with age and its impact on chronic diseases. - The connection between nitric oxide and diet, highlighting the importance of vegetables. - The surprising link between oral hygiene and nitric oxide levels, and how mouthwash may harm your health. - The influence of nitric oxide on hormone regulation and sexual health. - Myths about nitrates in cured meats and their health effects. - The risks associated with proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and their impact on nitric oxide production. - The role of nitric oxide in mitochondrial function and overall energy production. - Dr. Nathan Bryan's actionable tips for enhancing nitric oxide production through diet, lifestyle, and supplementation. Max Lugavere is a science journalist and New York Times bestselling author on a mission to help people feel better, live longer, and maximize their brain health by optimizing their diet.

On this episode, Max will speak about nutrition and dementia. With so many conflicting views on which nutrition route to take towards staving off Alzheimer's disease, there is too much confusion so Max provides a great overview of what route to take according to clinical data.

Alzheimer's disease, one of the most dreaded conditions of old age, is unfortunately made even more of a burden by a gene called ApoE4. With two copies of this gene, you can double your risk of developing this devastating condition, proving that life isn't always fair. Even if you don't have the gene, aging still increases your chances, making it seem like no matter what you do, Alzheimer's will still creep up on you. But don't lose hope - animal studies have found that heat shock proteins can at least offer some protection against it. So, while Alzheimer's may be looming in your future, there may still be some hope.

Ruari Fairbairns is the co-founder and CEO of One Year No Beer (OYNB), an initiative aimed at helping individuals reassess and transform their relationship with alcohol.

Ruari started his career as an oil broker in London, where he experienced the detrimental effects of a heavy drinking culture. This personal struggle with alcohol led him to take a break from drinking, during which he experienced significant improvements in his health, productivity, and overall well-being.

Motivated by these positive changes, he founded OYNB in 2015 to support others in making similar transformations.

In this episode, we cover:

  • The impact of alcohol on the brain and body, including its conversion to acetaldehyde.
  • Study findings showing how even moderate alcohol consumption damages brain regions like the neocortex.
  • Ruari Fairbairns' journey from ADHD and alcohol struggles to founding One Year No Beer.
  • The role of meditation in behavior change and awareness creation.
  • Managing social pressure and peer influence related to drinking.
  • Health and productivity benefits of quitting alcohol, such as better sleep and mental clarity.
  • Misinformation from the alcohol industry compared to tobacco industry practices.
  • Addressing compulsive behavior through understanding trauma, stress, and lack of purpose.
  • Future solutions like synthetic alcohol and non-alcoholic beverages.

In today's episode, we dive deep into the heart of a controversial and often misunderstood topic: the relationship between cholesterol levels and dementia.

For decades, the push to lower cholesterol has been a cornerstone of cardiovascular health. But what if this well-intentioned advice had unintended consequences for our brains?

Join me as we explore the dual nature of cholesterol, a substance vilified for its association with heart disease yet essential for brain health and function.

This episode unfolds the complex science behind cholesterol, shedding light on how it supports cognitive functions, protects the brain, and the downstream cognitive impacts of lowering it.

In this episode, we're joined by Dr. Kyle Gillett, who is passionate about offering comprehensive, personalized care to his patients. His medical practice spans a variety of areas including preventative care, aesthetics, sports medicine, hormone optimization, obstetrics, infertility, integrative medicine, and precision medicine, which incorporates genomics. Dr. Gillett views every individual as unique, and deserving of care that addresses their physical, mental, and spiritual health. He emphasizes the importance of working together with his patients to make decisions based on solid evidence. He strongly advocates for the principles that "food is medicine" and "exercise is medicine." Dr. Gillett highlights what he calls the "7 pillars of health": exercise, diet, sleep, stress management, social connections, exposure to sunlight, and spiritual wellness, believing these elements are more effective than any drug or supplement.
