The compelling and robust body of evidence of ergogenic — enhancing physical performance — effects of creatine supplementation (5 g/day) are well-documented.

Besides the evidence supporting its efficacy in increasing exercise performance/muscle function, muscle strength, and lean mass, there is literature suggesting that creatine may also be beneficial for brain health.

Joining me today to discuss this is mike Mutzel. Mike is wildly popular in the health, fitness and nutrition space garnering tens of millions of views on his YouTube channel which is actually where I first found out about mike. I am blessed to have him on todays episode because Mike is one of those guys who not only educates but he lives and breathes scientific education.

Max Lugavere is a science journalist and New York Times bestselling author on a mission to help people feel better, live longer, and maximize their brain health by optimizing their diet.

On this episode, Max will introduce dementia, discuss public policies around Alzheimer’s disease, and discuss modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors for AD prevention. Join Max Lugavere and learn how food can help protect your brain and your overall health.

Alzheimer's disease, one of the most dreaded conditions of old age, is unfortunately made even more of a burden by a gene called ApoE4. With two copies of this gene, you can double your risk of developing this devastating condition, proving that life isn't always fair. Even if you don't have the gene, aging still increases your chances, making it seem like no matter what you do, Alzheimer's will still creep up on you. But don't lose hope - animal studies have found that heat shock proteins can at least offer some protection against it. So, while Alzheimer's may be looming in your future, there may still be some hope.

How shocking is it to think that by the time you are in your 30s and 40s that your brain is already showing signs of Alzheimer’s. There is no immediate cure, yet, but there are things we can do to protect our brains around our diet and knowledge that we can actually apply and put into action. One of the ways to optimise your brain is by managing your nutrition and one topic within this field that I want to understand is that of metabolism.

Metabolic dysfunction. What is it? What is sugar? Why is sugar so bad?

I deep dive into these topics with Robert Lustig who is back on the podcast for a part II.

In this informative and eye-opening podcast, I sit down with renowned endocrinologist and obesity expert, Dr. Robert Lustig, to discuss the often misunderstood topic of saturated fat.

Dr. Lustig breaks down the complex concept in a "beautifully simplistic" way and explains how the scale lies when it comes to measuring our overall health. We delve into the three separate fat depots in our bodies and how they contribute differently to our health.

Dr. Lustig also touches on the link between stress, cortisol, and visceral fat and how sugar plays a role in the development of a fatty liver.

In this episode, I sat down with Professor Stuart Phillips to discuss the importance of  exercise - resistance training, nutrition, and recovery in building muscle and improving strength. This is all in the pursuit of better brain health and as we know, brain health and longevity has a greater impact when we have more strength and increased muscle mass.

Professor Phillips is a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Skeletal Muscle Health in Aging. He is a Professor in Kinesiology, and Graduate Faculty in the School of Medicine at McMaster University.

He is a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (FCAHS) and the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). His research is focused on the impact of nutrition and exercise on the mechanisms of human skeletal muscle protein turnover. He is also keenly interested in diet- and exercise-induced changes in body composition particularly in older persons.

Stephan is a neuroscientist who, in this episode, will go into the topic of obesity. Stephan provides insights into obesity that are not normally spoken about. He talks in depth about the role of genetics, the brain, and hormones such as leptin that play in the regulation of fat mass.

He dives deep into the factors that affect body weight, controlling appetite and controlling food intake and provides takeaways for people wanting to take advantage of what we know about the brain’s role in regulating our body weight.

This episode is for anybody wanting to understand the neuroscience of obesity. Why obesity is prevelant in our society and what role the brain plays in obesity.

  • What impacts cravings and appetite
  • What is fat
  • How obesity has changed over the last 50 years
  • Public health and obesity
  • The brain's role in obesity

Sleep is generally divided into two phases, REM (rapid eye movement) and NREM (non-rapid eye movement).

While the REM sleep phase is when your body focuses on reenergizing your mind, the NREM phase, and specifically the deep sleep stage, is when your body’s physically restorative processes take place. With your brain less active, the blood supply to your muscles and tissues increases, delivering oxygen and nutrients that promote muscle repair and growth. Let’s dig into some specific connections between sleep and muscle recovery.

Professor Shona Halson is the Deputy Director of the SPRINT Research Centre at
ACU’s School of Behavioural and Health Sciences. Prior to this she was the Head
Recovery Physiologist at the Australian Institute of Sport for over 15 years and has
led the Recovery team at three Olympic campaigns with the Australian Olympic
Committee. Her research focuses on sleep, recovery and fatigue and she has
published over 160 peer-reviewed articles and multiple book chapters. Shona
provides consultancy services to the Australian Open Tennis Tournament and Nike
as well as a number of national and international professional sporting teams.

IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN:

  • What happens to muscle and recovery during sleep deprivation and why
  • What happens to athletes who don't recovery adequately
  • Hormones related to sleep deprivation
  • Hunger - Protein - sleep deprivation

The compelling and robust body of evidence of ergogenic — enhancing physical performance — effects of creatine supplementation (5 g/day) are well-documented. Besides the evidence supporting its efficacy in increasing exercise performance/muscle function, muscle strength, and lean mass, there is literature suggesting that creatine may also be beneficial for brain health.

In this episode I draw on 3 studies in 3 areas:

Parkinsons Disease
Depression
Menopausal women

The compelling and robust body of evidence of ergogenic — enhancing physical performance — effects of creatine supplementation (5 g/day) are well-documented. Besides the evidence supporting its efficacy in increasing exercise performance/muscle function, muscle strength, and lean mass, there is literature suggesting that creatine may also be beneficial for brain health.

In this episode I draw on 3 studies in 3 areas:

Parkinsons Disease
Depression
Menopausal women

At 28 years old, Lauren Fisher has been one of the best known names in CrossFit. Since the NorCal Regionals in 2012, she’s collected a Top 10 finish at the Games (2014), a 1st place finish at the California Regional (2016), and eight overall Games appearances in total (4 individual, 4 team). In 2022, her team finished 4th overall at the 2022 Games.

Her mission is to challenge women to tap into the individual strength of females to see that strong is beautiful and giving up is simply not an option.

In this episode I debunk Lauren’s entire life from nutrition to sleep. I also dig into her training schedule and the highs and lows of being a XFIT athlete.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids for Brain Health

24 min
View

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential fatty acids that are required by the human body. There are three main types of omega-3 fatty acids:

  1. Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) Found in flaxseed oil and chia seed oil
  2. Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)
  3. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)
  4. In short: ALA⇒ EPA⇒ DHA

Your body isn’t good at producing omega-3s. That’s why they’re called essential fatty acids—you have to get them from food or supplements.

In this solo episode I will:
1. Break down what Omega 3 fatty acids are.

2. Talk about 2 studies that were done on the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids and the brain

3. Dosage requirements needed to achieve these desired results

4. Where to source your Omega'3's from

There are around 40 trillion bacteria in your body, most of which are found in your gut.

Collectively, they are known as your gut microbiome, and they’re incredibly important for overall health. However, certain types of bacteria in your intestines can also contribute to many diseases.

In this episode I speak with Dr Kirten Parekh from Klora about optimising your gut health so you can have a better performing brain.

In this episode we discuss:

  • What is the gut microbiome
  • What is dysbiosis?
  • How does the gut communicate with the brain?
  • What is wrong with our food system ?
  • How does disease in the gut start?
  • What are pre, pro and post biotics?
  • How can we have a better gut microbiome?

During the ageing process, physical capabilities (e.g., muscular strength) and cognitive functions (e.g., memory) gradually decrease. Regarding cognitive functions, substantial functional (e.g., compensatory brain activity) and structural changes (e.g., shrinking of the hippocampus) in the brain cause this decline.

From a glance:

  • Dementia affects approximately 47 million individuals globally with projections of 130 million by the year 2050.
  • Late-onset Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia, accounting for approximately 75% of all cases and is characterized by a progressive decline in cognitive function, memory, and cerebral volume.
  • The pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease is poorly understood; however, aging, genetics, and an individual's diet and lifestyle over several decades appear to be key determinants.

Excitingly, growing evidence points towards a relationship between cognition and measures of muscular strength and muscle mass.

First part of this episode goes into the brain ageing process and the second half is about the effects of resistance training on brain function.

Cognitive enhancing drugs are claimed to improve cognitive functions such as learning and attention. However, little is known presently about the characteristics of off-prescription cognitive enhancing drug users or their perceived everyday experience with these drugs. Modafinil has been the drugs of desire for a long time now. If you ever saw the Bradley Cooper movie called limitless, you probably wish you had access to this drug.

Laboratory studies have even shown that it may have potent antioxidative and neuroprotective effects. Modafinil is also of a high interest to the US military for enhancing alertness and reducing battle fatigue.

So why isn’t everybody on this drug? Well In today's podcast, I host a guest who knows more about the science of modafinil than anyone. Dr Jonathan Wisor who is a professor of cell biology at Washington state university and researchers circadian rhythms.

Current evidence indicates cold water immersion may be the most effective method of pre-cooling to improve endurance performance in hot conditions, although practicality must be considered. Ice slurry ingestion appears to be the most promising practical alternative.

Dr. Craig Heller, Professor of Biology at Stanford University and world expert on the science of temperature regulation. In this episode Dr. Heller explains how heat impairs muscular and mental performance, and how to cool the brain and body to reduce inflammation and to enhance performance. Dr. Heller teaches us the best ways to Coll our body down during performance, and how to use the precise timing and location of cooling on our body to greatly enhance endurance and weight training performance. He describes how cooling technology discovered and engineered in his laboratory has led to a tripling of anaerobic performance and allowed endurance athletes to run further and faster, as well as to eliminate delayed onset muscle soreness.

If you’re interested in understanding the science behind cold water immersion, ice baths and how training in the cold weather than this is the episode for you.

Hormones are like a symphony, with each one acting as a specialized instrument to keep our bodies in tune.

But as we age, those instruments start to get a little rusty. Small changes over time create a variety of imbalances, until one day we wake up realizing we’re flat and out of tune. This leads to things like menopausal symptoms in women, hair loss and belly fat in men, thyroid dysfunction, bone loss, and so much more.

That’s why it’s never too early, or too late, to start optimizing hormonal balance.

To day I am interviewing Dr. Kyle Gillett, MD, a dual board-certified physician in family medicine and obesity medicine and an expert in optimizing hormone levels to improve overall health and well-being in both men and women.

In this episode we discuss:

PART I

  • The 6 pillars of hormone optimisation
  • What genetic tests tell us about hormones
  • Sleep and hormone production

PART II

  • Female hormone optimisation
  • Hormones and fertility
  • Hormone optimisation for female athletes
  • Metabolic syndrome in women
  • The menopausal women- what is happening and the link between Alzheimers Disease
  • What tests women should be ordering

PART III

  • Male hormone optimisation
  • Low sperm count and low testosterone levels
  • Fertility - sperm count
  • Why men take testosterone and is this leading to cancer?
  • Sleep optimisation

The episode is rich with scientific mechanisms and tools for you all to consider.

That’s why it’s never too early, or too late, to start optimizing hormonal balance.

To day I am interviewing Dr. Kyle Gillett, MD, a dual board-certified physician in family medicine and obesity medicine and an expert in optimizing hormone levels to improve overall health and well-being in both men and women.

In this episode we discuss:

PART I

  • The 6 pillars of hormone optimisation
  • What genetic tests tell us about hormones
  • Sleep and hormone production

PART II

  • Female hormone optimisation
  • Hormones and fertility
  • Hormone optimisation for female athletes
  • Metabolic syndrome in women
  • The menopausal women- what is happening and the link between Alzheimers Disease
  • What tests women should be ordering

PART III

  • Male hormone optimisation
  • Low sperm count and low testosterone levels
  • Fertility - sperm count
  • Why men take testosterone and is this leading to cancer?
  • Sleep optimisation

The episode is rich with scientific mechanisms and tools for you all to consider.

The brain is a fascinating and complex organ. It’s the primary control center for our whole body, and it can be affected by stress in many different ways. Stress itself is an important part of life – it helps us prepare for danger or respond to emergencies. But when we’re constantly stressed out, that’s when our brain starts to pay the price. This blog post will explore how stress affects your brain, both positively and negatively, so you can develop strategies to reduce your brain’s vulnerability to its harmful effects.

In this episode I speak with Dr Mithu Storoni, an eye surgeon & neuroscience researcher-turned writer. She is the author of "Stress Proof".

This episode taught me so much about the neurobiology of stress and how to combat stress in your life.

In most cases, your genes have less than five per cent to do with your risk of developing a particular disease, in fact the vast majority of diseases, including many cancers, diabetes, and Alzheimer's disease, have a genetic contribution of 5 to 10 per cent at best.

To learn more about this I brough Dr Mike Malin and Dr Mike Stone from Wild Health on the podcast today to talk about all genomics based medicine. At Wild Health, they combine an in-depth genetic analysis with extensive blood work and a lifestyle assessment to provide you with a fully comprehensive picture of your health like you’ve never seen it before. You’ll receive a 50+ page report covering everything from your optimal diet, exercise and supplement routine to your risks of chronic disease and prevention strategies.

You also get paired with a dedicated doctor and health coach who will help you understand and apply the biggest opportunities for maximizing your health.

What I personally love is that they focus on brain health too - everything from dementia & Alzheimer's risk to overall inflammation.

They even look at specific genes around your circadian rhythm to help you optimize a sleep routine.

The deaths of six former Philadelphia Phillies players from brain cancer since 2003 have sparked concerns over the playing surface and radar guns at the team's former stadium - and now one doctor is calling for an investigation.

Interestingly, there has been an outbreak of glioblastomas at a local New Jersey High School resulting in 107 cases of glioblastomas at this school.

Glioblastoma is an aggressive type of cancer that can occur in the brain or spinal cord. Glioblastoma forms from cells called astrocytes that support nerve cells. Glioblastoma can occur at any age, but tends to occur more often in older adults. It can cause worsening headaches, nausea, vomiting and seizures.

I have been dying to do this podcast, it’s been quite a long time coming. As many of you know I have been wearing a WHOOP strap for many years to track and measure my performance.

This strap is pretty much a self-quantification device and allows me to measure my sleep, HRV, recovery, exercise and much more. The thing I love most about this company is the amount of research that is being done on the back end.

WHOOP as a company partners with well known physicians and scientists with well known labs across the world to quantify their data. So I thought it would be time that I brought their VP of performance on the podcast, Kristen Holmes.

This episode is everyone you need to know regarding WHOOP.

Today I interview Michael Brandt- CEO and founder of HVMN- Health via modern nutrition and the research lead for his company- Dr Latt Mansor. Together, these two gentlemen are on a mission to solve many dysfuntions in the body and brain with the help of ketones.

Michael believes ketones are a nutritional primitive; a tool for everyone’s toolkit, akin to Omega-3, caffeine, or CBD. H.V.M.N. launched the world’s first ketone ester in 2017, secured a $6MM contract with U.S. Special Operations Command, and has since worked with elite athletes and researchers to determine the effects of its ketone formulas on everything from athletic performance to recovery to metabolic health and longevity.

H.V.M.N. recently announced their second generation of ketones, Ketone-IQ. You can use code NEURO to get 10% off!

Imagine if you could wake up everyday feeling completely rejuvenated, like you’ve squeezed every last beneficial drop out of your sleep. How do you think that would affect your life? Would you be happier? Would you get more done? Would you have better relationships with family and friends? Could you even live longer?

Sleep is part of what makes us human. We all know we need it, and appreciate it on a daily basis. Yet it is largely taken for granted as a fact of life, and we mostly fail to utilize it to its full potential.

Dr. Tommy Wood is back in the studio today discussing all things sleep- the good and the bad. In this episode you will learn:

  1. Quality and problems with sleep trackers
  2. What is true optimisation of sleep?
  3. Insomnia treatment options
  4. How formula 1 drivers optimise sleep while traveling
  5. Tracking HRV with a chest strap
  6. Temperature and thermal regulation

Todays inspiring episode is with Drew Canole, founder of Organifi, serial entrepreneur and global leader in health and fitness.

Drew has helped thousands of women and men revitalize their health, ignite their vision, and shift the course of their life forever. After reaching a dead-end in his own health, Drew discovered the chasm of difference between going through the motions and living with radical intention. He now helps people tap into the "Big You" to create the change they never thought possible.

Some questions I ask:

  • Why is green juice one of the most powerful things you can use to change your health?
  • How can you figure out the optimal amount to eat for your body?
  • How does someone stay consistent with their diet?
  • What do you do every morning to set yourself up to win for the rest of the day?

SUNDAY BRUNCH: Glycine as a Sleep Hack

9 min
View

overworked and almost burned out after doing crazy hours at training and at work that my sleep quality was so poor it was basically non-existant. Working hours reached, at their worst, nearly 100 per week – average was easily over 60. So where did I cut the time for working out and socialization?

You got it right, sleep.

Since 2016 I had been trying out different supplements, technologies, mattresses, pillows, beds, bedrooms, and all kinds of herbs for achieving better sleep. But nothing can make it better if you have only limited time to spend in the bed. So that particular feature was the first step in optimizing sleep: simply spending more time in bed and changing my life in such a way that it made sleeping more possible.

This episode delves deep into the secrets of better deep sleep with a the latest findings in Glycine and its effects on deep sleep.

The unfortunate truth is that not many people know the ins and outs of blood work. In this episode you will learn about the specific markers to order when getting blood work. We look at :

Blood glucose regulation
Lipid Panels
CMP: Liver and Gallbladder Markers
CBC, Iron, and Inflammatory Markers
sex hormones
Thyroid Markers
and more....

Whether you’re competing at an elite level or you’re simply staying active to promote overall health, sleep is vital to your athletic performance and muscle recovery. When you put your body through repetitive motions in sports, you increase the risk of associated injuries and fatigue.

Not only does quality sleep repair and rejuvenate the body to stimulate muscle growth, but it also sharpens the mind and boosts mental clarity to prepare your brain to learn and retain new skills.

Dr. Amy Bender is currently Director of Clinical Sleep Science at Cerebra Medical and an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Kinesiology at the University of Calgary.

Her current research focus at Cerebra Medical is to help people sleep better by improving sleep disorder treatments with more precise digital sleep metrics. She is passionate about translating sleep science for others to understand and take action with interviews on over 30 podcasts, numerous community and conference presentations, and 14 peer-reviewed publications.

It's well known that F1 drivers are some of the fittest athletes in the world, but how do they train and what do they eat?

What I didn't know was that necks, shoulders, and an athlete's overall core is under tremendous strain through every turn on every lap for the entire 90 minutes of a race. Drivers must therefore be strong athletes with high stamina reserves.

Daniel Ricciardo’s workout regime is a carefully constructed assortment of physical challenges designed to push his body to the limit, most notably through the core and neck. With the immense strain and pressure placed on the body during races, drivers must be at the absolute peak conditioning, and Ricciardo is a shining example of what happens when you get it right. The McLaren driver recently took out the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, his first top-of-the-podium finish since 2018 and the English marque’s first GP in nine years.

In this episode we will learn what it takes to be a peak Formula 1 driver.

Little did I know that your mouth can be the gateway to several health problems that extend beyond a toothache or cavity.

It might sound like a horror movie but the fact is, if you have certain species of pathogenic oral bacteria in your gums, they could be slowly making their way into your brain as you read this. These bacteria among 100s of others responsible for oral health issues, including tooth decay, cavities and periodontal disease (or gum disease).

Dr. Steven Lin sits down with host of The Neuro Experience podcast, Louisa Nicola today to talk about functional dentistry.  Louisa and Dr. Lin  discuss the history of the development of our jaws, vitamin D deficiency, the ecosystem in our mouths, dangers of mouth breathing, what bleeding gums really mean, and many other fascinating topics.

Doug Evans is joining us today to speak about the powerful effects of sprouting.  This conversation opened my eyes to the possibilities of sprouts. This compound is present in all cruciferous vegetables. In animal studies, when glucoraphanin is chewed or swallowed, it produces a cancer-protective compound SULFORAPHANE. This sulforaphane absorbs toxins from the body and flushes them out through urine.

The best way to get sulforaphane is to sprout your broccoli organic seeds in your own home. At between five and six days old, the sulforaphane in broccoli sprout contains up to 100 times more than in mature plant. The sprouts can also be used in smoothies, sandwiches, wraps or salad apart from juicing.

Broccoli sprouts are now readily available in major retail stores, but make sure you buy organic, non-GMO, or better still buy the seeds and sprout at home.

Doug is a pioneer in this space and in this episode we speak about sprouting peas, chick peas, beans and broccoli.

Vitamin D Deficiency and Poor Sleep.

19 min
View

When it comes to sleep, Vitamin D impacts brain regions involved in sleep regulation and sleep wake cycles. The exact mechanisms by which Vitamin D affects and regulates these sleep mechanistic pathways is unclear, although it has been suggested that there are some areas within the brainstem that is affected by Vitamin D.

Three things we will discuss:

  1. What vitamin D is- we seem to be confused
  2. Its link to sleep
  3. VItamin D values and daily doses:

Articles mentioned in the episode:

  1. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30660070/
  2. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30611908/
  3. https://academic.oup.com/sleep/article/38/2/251/2416956
