Hello, Hello!

This week on The Make It Podcast, Chris and Nick discuss the success of Five Nights at Freddy's and how it was able to capitalize on existing IP in a way that worked. They also analyze Taylor Swift's deal with AMC to distribute her concert film and whether others can replicate her success. Nick provides a culture check on a controversy involving the head of HBO being caught creating fake X (formerly Twitter) accounts to troll critics of its content.

We also talk about:

  • Debate around whether people can "cash in" on Taylor Swift's lottery ticket deal or if her level of fame and experience is unique.
  • Consideration of whether Troll behavior is commonplace or if the HBO executive was wrong to attempt to manipulate feedback.
  • Comments on the importance of artists receiving genuine criticism to improve their work.

Enjoy!

Hello, Hello!

In this edition of Indie Talk, Chris is joined by Director Roxana Baldovin. She discusses her career journey from growing up with an immigrant background in Brooklyn to directing music videos for major artists. Roxana also shares insights on navigating the unpredictable music video industry, building her skills as a director, and her transition into narrative filmmaking.

We also talk about:

  • Growing up immersed in multiple cultures in Brooklyn due to her family's immigrant backgrounds
  • Getting her start directing by cold-pitching directly to artists at concerts and persevering until landing early opportunities

  • Why directing alone on a major music video project for the first time was challenging but helped Roxana fully own her role as director
  • Navigating the music video industry and the need to have thick skin due to high rejection rates and uncertainty about whether projects will even get made
  • Why commercial work involves more structure, resources, and money compared to music videos
  • Building a core team of trusted collaborators is important while also allowing flexibility for different project needs
  • Learning from mistakes and gaining experience over thousands of hours of work builds directing confidence and skills
  • Staying true to your artistic vision while also listening to and incorporating others' perspectives is key to success in the film industry

Enjoy!

Hello, Hello!

In this edition of Indie Talk, we're joined by Jennifer Cooney, Filmmaker and Director of the feature film Wild Fire.

We talk about:

  • Jennifer's directorial debut, Wild Fire. It's a drama about radical honesty between friends.
  • Writing and filming locally in Pennsylvania as an independent filmmaker
  • Chris and Nick provide advice on building a crew with the right "vibe" and avoiding "mercenaries."
  • We discuss the challenges of filming in a new home and getting state support.
  • Jennifer also shares details on Wildfire's festival run and her next project, Wild Fire.
  • and much more...

Summary:

Filmmaker Jennifer Cooney joines hosts Chris Barkley and Nick Buggs to discuss her directorial debut Wild Fire. Cooney, a Pennsylvania-based independent filmmaker, wrote, directed and edited Wildfire which follows a group of friends who shed their social masks during an intimate night of truth-telling.

Cooney explained how she filmed Wild Fire entirely locally using friends' homes and a dedicated crew. As an indie filmmaker, she discussed the challenges of limited resources but emphasized her determination to manifest her creative vision. Chris praised the film's trailer and expressed excitement for its festival run.

The conversation delved into Cooney's focus on authentic storytelling and capturing humanity through subtle nuances. She seeks to represent humanity's shared struggles with vulnerability and living truthfully through intimate scenes and raw dialogue. Cooney's next project Woman of God continues exploring these themes through the story of a nun losing her faith.

Chris and Nick provided advice to Cooney on building a crew with the right "vibe" to avoid "mercenaries." They also discussed the lack of state support for independent filmmakers in Pennsylvania. Cooney's journey serves as an inspiration for other indie creators believing in their vision despite challenges. The Make It Podcast was thrilled to give Cooney a platform to discuss her moving work.

Enjoy!

Questions answered in this episode:

- How did Jennifer write Wild Fire in relation to its indie/limited resources context? Did she write with limitations in mind or did it just end up working out that way?

- How many locations did Wild Fire end up having and how difficult was that choice as an indie filmmaker?

- Can you give us a quick synopsis of Wild Fire?

- How did Jennifer work with her crew to set the right "vibe" and avoid "mercenaries"?

- What is the state of independent filmmaking in Pennsylvania - is there any grant/rebate support from the state?

- Where are Wild Fire's upcoming festival screenings and what is Jennifer's next project?

Hello, Hello!

In this episode of The Make It Podcast, hosts Chris Barkley and Nicholas Buggs dive into the topic of social media influence and its potential downsides. They discuss two recent incidents where influencers were able to mobilize large crowds of young fans into risky or illegal situations. Chris and Nick debate the growing power of social media personalities and how it can be wielded responsibly or irresponsibly. They also discuss the 48 Hour Film Project, how to disagree civilly, how Barbie utilized the color pink and more.

Topics:

  • The Oliver Anthony phenomenon
  • Putting a period on the Alabama dock fight
  • How Mattel flipped the status quo on Branding & Marketing for the Barbie Movie
  • A discussion that asks, “Is Oppenheimer a good film?”
  • Celebrating the upcoming 48 Hour Film Festival
  • Producer Papa Bear stumps and educates us with an all-new48 Hour Film Fest version of Things We Should Know
  • Chris and Nick discuss the reach and power if Social Media Influencers in the latest Culture Check
  • and much more...

Questions answered in this episode:

  • How were social media influencers able to gather hundreds of kids to loot a JD Sports store in Oxford and thousands of kids in New York who ended up clashing with police?
  • What is the difference between how movies like Barbie were able to inspire positive behaviors vs how influencers are encouraging risky or illegal activities?
  • How can social media influence be used for good causes but also encourage harmful activities if not wielded responsibly?
  • What drives different types of young people to attend risky gatherings encouraged by influencers online?
  • How can parents monitor what their kids are watching online to prevent negative influences?
  • What role should social media platforms, influencers, and parents play in shaping social media culture responsibly?

Summary:

In this week's episode of The Make It Podcast, hosts Chris Barkley and Nicholas Buggs discussed the growing influence of social media and its potential negative impacts. They pointed to two recent incidents where social media was used to encourage large groups of young people to engage in risky or illegal behavior.

In one case, a TikTok video urged hundreds of kids to loot a JD Sports store in Oxford. In another, a Twitch streamer promised free PlayStation 5s, drawing over 1,000 people who ended up in a confrontation with police. The hosts argued this shows how social media "gods" or influencers, many of them children themselves, are able to move huge audiences to act in dangerous ways.

They contrasted this with how movies like Barbie were able to inspire positive behaviors like purchasing pink merchandise. The discussion highlighted the double-edged sword of social media - its ability to be used for good causes but also to encourage harmful activities if not wielded responsibly.

The hosts called on parents to monitor what their kids are watching online and advocated for more positive role models on social platforms. They also suggested that short films could explore what drives different types of young people to risky gatherings. Overall, the conversation raised important questions about the growing power of influencers and how to shape social media for the better.

Enjoy!

Maestra is a new feature documentary following five internationally-based women as they prepare for and perform in ‘La Maestra’—the only competition in the world for female orchestra conductors. Personal stories of survival, passion, and perseverance are woven together with the drama and excitement of this one-of-a-kind event created to break yet another glass ceiling for women. Maggie Contreras' directorial debut had its world premiere in competition at the 2023 Tribeca Festival, where it won an audience award.

Previously, she was the producer behind documentary films tackling a wide range of topics, from comics to solar energy. Jonathan Scott's Power Trip (PBS Independent Lens ‘20) is the titular HGTV celebrity and activist's journey across the USA to examine the antiquated utility monopoly system and how solar holds the key to energy freedom. In 2017, Gilbert also premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and was distributed by Gravitas Ventures with exclusive SVOD on Hulu. Her work has been seen on AMC, NFL, and Quibi.

Whether it’s working with brands or in the field on her next film, Maggie is fueled by the power of true stories.

Charity made history as the first woman to play Shakespeare at The Globe Theatre, London, in  Nicole Charles’s ‘exhilarating’ all-female production of EMILIA, which had a West End transfer to the Vaudeville Theatre. Additional theatre credits include a ‘beautifully executed’ (LA Times) THE CHERRY ORCHARD at the Olivier Theatre at the National Theatre, SEMINA, THE BLACKEST BLACK and NO NAUGHTY BITS all at the Hampstead Theatre; CANDIDA at the Theatre Royal Bath and THE RIVALS with Celia Imrie at the Southwark Playhouse.

As a producer, Charity’s credits include the female-led, jet-black comedy A SERIAL KILLER’S GUIDE TO LIFE, which was long-listed for the Breakthrough Producer award at the 2019 British Independent Film Awards and can be viewed on all VoD sites (Apple TV, Itunes, Amazon, BT, Virgin, etc).

Clanagan has broken new ground with his digital-first approach to the successful release of films The Perfect Match and the Tupac Shakur biopic All Eyez On Me ($27M its first week). He partnered with Hart to produce and release concert movie Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain ($32M at the box office), comedy concert Kevin Hart: What Now? (marking first comedian to headline an NFL stadium), and stand-up comedy tour, What Now? ($100M+ and 1.3M tickets sold).

Clanagan began as a concert promoter for the "HBO Def Comedy Jam" tour, NWA's "Straight Outta Compton" tour, Mary J Blige, Will Smith and Jazzy Jeff. He was previously President of rapper Master P's No Limit Films, cultivating the startup into a $40M juggernaut multimedia company and the pioneer of the urban home video sell-thru market. Clanagan has successfully marketed and distributed home entertainment properties The Def Comedy Jam series, BET's Arabesque Films, and The Fat Albert TV series; and has released 300+ movie titles grossing $350M+ in revenue.

Clanagan has been awarded the Pioneer Award from the African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA), the Game Changer Achievement Award from Uptown Magazine and Kia Motors; and named to Ebony's Power 150, and Black Enterprise's Top 50 Power Brokers.

More On Christin Baker

An award-winning director and Emmy-nominated producer, Christin Baker is passionate about telling relevant and meaningful stories. Most recently, Christin partnered with DIVA Media Group for the Dec. 1, 2022, relaunch of the LGBTQ+ streaming network DIVABoxOffice.tv. As CEO of the company, she will also premiere her fourth queer holiday romcom, Merry & Gay

Since the age of 13, when her family purchased their first VHS camcorder, Christin has been playing with storytelling, directing music videos and SNL parodies with neighborhood kids. In 2009, she launched her own production and digital distribution company, Tello Films, and the first streaming channel to make movies and other programming for the queer female community. TelloFilms.com was the first lesbian network to receive an Emmy nomination in 2017 for the series Secs & EXECS. In 2019, the series Riley Parra, which she produced and directed, was nominated for two Daytime Emmy Awards.

Under Christin’s guidance Tello Films was the leader in creating original queer content as well as creating a platform for monetizing niche entertainment. Passionate about directing, Christin was awarded Best Director for her work on Maybelle at the 2016 London Raindance Film Festival.

She is a member of the Producers Guild of America and the Television Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences and has had the pleasure to work with such film icons such as Lindsay Wagner (The Bionic Woman), Marina Sirtis (Deanna Troy, Star Trek), Amanda Righetti (The Mentalist), Archie Kao (CSI, Chicago Med, the Blue Power Ranger) and Janina Gavankar (Big Sky, The Morning Show).

Hello, Hello!

In this edition of Indie Talk, we discuss the year that was 2022. To help us do that, we enlisted the help of Director Traci Hays, Author and Documentarian Dr. Mark Goulston, and Emmy-Winning Filmmaker, Fr3deR1ck. We talk about the people we lost last year, why losing Twitch Boss hurt so much, new projects on the horizon, the advice that stuck with us in 2022, what children understand about creativity that adults forget, the Tyler Perry problem, and predictions for the year to come. Enjoy!

Hello, Hello!

In this episode, we have a conversation with Actress and Singer Shavvon Lin. We talk about how she sold her Chinese parents on being an artist, approaching auditions like a job, surviving the trauma of living through “one-child” laws in China, how she protects herself from the character’s trauma, why good work is a fix for the appropriation in film problem, her experience dubbing a $700M box office film, and the challenge of feeling like she’s not American enough for audiences. Enjoy!

Hello, Hello!

Chris here with a short message of thanks to our esteemed listeners and supporters.

It's been a fantastic year for MAKE IT, and that's thanks to you for your engagement and support. If you have not noticed, Nick and I decided to try something new with the release schedule.

Longform podcast episodes are now published every eleven days instead of every seven days. That means episodes will populate your feed some weeks on Tuesday and other weeks on Friday.

Our instinct behind the change is to give you more time to take in the long-form episodes, hopefully preventing bottlenecks. We'd love to hear if it's working for you. Should we keep this new format or go back to the way it was? Please let us know!

As always, you can reach out to us on Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok @_bonsaicreative and YouTube and Facebook by searching for "MAKE IT Bonsai Creative."

If email is easier, hit us up at contact@bonsai.film.

In the meantime, we hope you're enjoying the latest Indie Talk, and stay tuned for an entertaining and informative upcoming interview to wrap up the year on December 27th. Happy Holidays, and as always, Be Better, Be Creative, Be Engaged.

And thank you for listening!

The MAKE IT podcast is brought to you by the Voice of the Filmmaker program, which is sponsored by Women in Film and Television, Nashville (a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization).

Hello, Hello!

In this episode, we have a conversation with writer and comedian Charla Lauriston. We talk about working on the NBC series Grand Crew, writing her web series 'Clinch & Release,' her excellent new course for writers, The Werking Writer School, comedy as a defense mechanism, the importance of being seen, racism in Boston, why it's harder to get a laugh from a fellow comedian, the joke she wishes she'd written,  how she deals with writer's block, and her best advice for would-be comics and sitcom writers. Enjoy!
