Fireforce is the compelling, brutal but true account of Chris Cocks’ service in 3 Commando, The Rhodesian Light Infantry, during Zimbabwe’s bitter civil war of the ’70s—a war that came to be known almost innocuously as ‘the bush war’. ‘Fireforce’, a tactic of total airborne envelopment, was developed and perfected by the RLI, together with the Selous Scouts and the Rhodesian Air Force. Fireforce became the principal strike weapon of the beleaguered Rhodesian forces in their struggle against the overwhelming tide of the Communist-trained and -equipped ZANLA and ZIPRA guerrillas. The combat strain on a fighting soldier was almost unbelievable, for the Rhodesians, who were always desperately short of ground troops, were sometimes obliged to parachute the same men into action into as many as three enemy contacts a day. While estimates of enemy casualties vary, there seems little doubt that the RLI accounted for at least 12,000 ZANLA and ZIPRA guerrillas—but not without cost. Fireforce is not for the squeamish. Although it has been written with unforgettable pathos and humor, it tells of face-to-face combat in the bush and death at point-blank range. It is a book which does nothing to glorify or glamorize war, for as Chris Cocks found at such a young age, war is merely a catalogue of suffering, destruction and death. Dr. Kemplin earned her BNSc at Queen’s University, MScN and Doctorate in Nursing Practice at Loyola University (New Orleans), and PhD from Rush University (Chicago). Kate was a civilian emergency/trauma nurse specialist for the United States Army before becoming faculty in Nursing and Operational Medicine at the Medical College of Georgia with subsequent appointments in the University of North Carolina and University of Tennessee systems. In early 2020, Kate was appointed Chief Nursing Officer of Columbia/Presbyterian’s 220-bed COVID hospital during New York City’s worst pandemic surges to date. Dr. Kemplin returns home to Queen’s from the University of Windsor Faculty of Nursing where she directed the Kemplin Lacesso Research Lab. SOF suicides are a major area of her research, and her ex-husband Michael Froede sadly took his own life in 2019 while assigned to a secretive Army intelligence unit. Michael Froede suspected he was being followed. For weeks after he returned from a highly classified mission in Vietnam, he would see people watching him in Washington, D.C. They’d be parked outside his house or tailing him while driving. Sometimes while on the road, Froede would pull a U-turn and swing back around on the suspected surveillance team to take their pictures, to let them know that he knew they were there. At 9:30 a.m. on June 23, 2019, Froede drove his Dodge Ram to the third floor of the Carroll Creek parking garage in Frederick, Md. After backing into a parking space, he sat back in his seat, lit up a Camel cigarette and flicked the ash out the window. Froede was a member of a secret Army unit known by the innocuous-sounding cover name Communications Technology Research Activity, or COMTECH, part of an elite group of Army hackers who received tasks from the National Security Agency. During his third tour of duty in Vietnam where he served as a Green Beret, Jim Morris was wounded badly enough to be retired from the army. He came home bitter, angry that his career had been ended. After reading The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, he realized that many members of Ken Kesey’s Merry Pranksters had also been combat officers. Following this spiritual “hint,” he spent the next couple of years as an acid head, even skydiving on LSD. Awakened by his LSD experiences, Morris immersed himself in the books of Carlos Castaneda as well as in Kriya yoga, Charismatic Christianity, and A Course in Miracles. Dale Comstock was the youngest operator in Delta Force when he joined from the 82nd Airborne and was the master breacher on the military's first successful hostage rescue mission, Operation Acid Gambit which rescued Kurt Muse from the clutches of Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega. Professor James Olson received his law degree from the University of Iowa. He is a professor of the practice at the Bush School, where he teaches courses on intelligence and counterintelligence. He served for over thirty years in the Directorate of Operations of the Central Intelligence Agency, mostly overseas in clandestine operations. In addition to several foreign assignments, he was Chief of Counterintelligence at CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia. Professor Olson has been awarded the Intelligence Medal of Merit, the Distinguished Career Intelligence Medal, the Donovan Award, and several Distinguished Service Citations. He is the recipient of awards from the Bush School and the Association of Former Students for excellence in teaching. Fred Galvin served twenty-seven years in the U.S. Marine Corps, beginning as a seventeen-year-old who rose from the enlisted ranks to become an officer. Master Sergeant Jan W. “Dutch” Wierenga is a little known but highly respected Special Forces and CIA legend. He has served the USA for sixty years in total, in some of the most dangerous and difficult circumstances imaginable. Born in Indonesia in 1936, he and his family spent a total of four years imprisoned in Japanese and Indonesian internment camps under unspeakably harsh conditions. They were rescued under fire by British Gurkha troops in 1946. He was running jungle combat patrols by age 16, and emigrated to Holland by cargo ship in 1955. He arrived in the USA in 1960, became a US citizen and enlisted in the US Army in 1963, serving three tours in Vietnam. A Green Beret, he was a Recon Team leader in the then-secret, now legendary MACV/SOG, running some of the most harrowing and highly-classified missions of the Vietnam War. He later served as a Special Forces Team Sergeant, Recon Instructor, HALO parachuting instructor and First Sergeant of the Special Forces Training School. He was the Senior NCO at the founding of the Survival Evasion Resistance and Escape (SERE) program under COL James “Nick” Rowe. Dutch earned numerous combat decorations including the Silver Star, four Bronze Stars and the Purple Heart. He retired from the Army in 1986. Dutch then joined the CIA as a Paramilitary Operations Officer. He conducted numerous clandestine missions for CIA, including serving as a Battalion Adviser to the Nicaraguan “Contras” and acting as Chief of Station in a war-torn African country. He became a beloved Training Instructor at the CIA's “Farm”, serving in that capacity until he finally retired in Spring 2022. Now, his incredible life story can at last be told. This book is the biography of this remarkable American patriot. It contains numerous period photos, and first-hand descriptions of Vietnam combat, CIA operations and other historic events. Before the Iraq war in 2003, Green Beret teams infiltrated Northern Iraq, linked up with the CIA, and embedded deeply with the Kurdish Peshmerga to prepare for war. These special missions were called “Advanced Force Operations.” Subsequently, these special teams brought in the rest of the Green Berets during an operation called "the Ugly Baby."  Then, one of the most significant battles in Special Forces history occurred: "Operation Viking Hammer," where six Green Beret teams along with a handful of CIA and Air Force Special Ops personnel, combined with approximately 8000 Peshmerga, took back hundreds of square kilometers from almost 1000 Ansar Al Islam extremists, and secured a poison production facility of national level significance. Steve Stratton started his Army career at the White House Communications Agency supporting the communications needs of President’s Ford and Carter, Vice President’s Rockefeller and Mondale and Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. His work took him around the world introducing him to new cultures, ways of thinking, and the various agencies tasked with projecting and protecting American interests abroad. The jump from WHCA to the US Secret Service was an easy transition but after several years and election campaign Steve left for the commercial sector. Steve was awarded his Green Beret in 1986. From the 80’s through 2000 he deployed counter-drug and training missions in the SOUTHCOM region. During this time his civilian work included supporting CENTCOM, SOCOM, and DIA. Michael “Mick” Patrick Mulroy is the former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for the Middle East. Mr. Mulroy is a retired Paramilitary Operations Officer (PMOO) from the Central Intelligence Agency. His previous assignments include: Chief of Department in Special Activities Center (formerly Special Activities Division), Chief of Station of an overseas country, Chief of Expeditionary Team in a warzone country, Chief of Base in a warzone country, Deputy Chief of a Branch in Special Activities Division (SAD), a PMOO in a Branch in SAD and several other overseas and headquarters positions. His awards include the Intelligence Star, the Intelligence Commendation Medal, the Career Intelligence Medal and the National Intelligence Exceptional Achievement Medal, among others. Mr. Mulroy is also a retired U.S. Marine reservist where he served as both a commissioned and enlisted Marine. During his twenty years of service, he served as an Armored Crewman, a Judge Advocate and an Infantry Officer. His awards include the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal and the Iraq Campaign Medal, among others. He is also a recipient of the State Department’s Superior Honor Award. Mr. Mulroy holds a bachelor’s degree from Augusta University and a law degree from Samford University. He is married to Mary Beth Mulroy and they have two children. A son that is a college student in Montana and a U.S. Marine reservist and a daughter who is a college student in South Carolina.
