Dr. David Walton is a retired Special Forces officer with 25 years of SF experience including deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan, and across the globe with assignments spanning the tactical, operational, and strategic levels.  In addition to his Green Beret credentials, Dr. Walton has a decade of experience in academia where he teaches National Security Studies and Executive Leadership. His research portfolio includes Security Strategy, Organizational Culture and Dynamics, and Human Performance. He is a Subject Matter Expert in Special Forces Assessment and Selection with decades of experience working specifically with the Cadre, leadership, and candidate populations. Roger Lockshier enlisted in the US Army in April 1966. After completing Airborne (Paratrooper) Jump Training at Fort Benning GA, he was assigned to Aviation Battalion 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell Kentucky, December 1966. In December of 1967 the 101st Airborne Division was transferred to Viet Nam. Lockshier was a Crewchief / Doorgunner with the 101st Airborne's Black Angels Huey Helicopter Gunships assigned to provide combat support to the 101st Airborne and 5th Special Forces MACVSOG. He returned to the States in December of 1968. Lockshier was the recipient of several awards: • Two time recipient of The Distinguished Flying Cross • Bronze Star • Purple Heart • Air Medal with "V" Device • 19 Air Medals • Army Commendation Medal • Army Presidential Unit Citation 101st Airborne • Army Presidential Unit Citation Special Forces Khe Sahn • Army Presidential Unit Citation MACVSOG (Special Ops) • Navy Presidential Unit Citation Khe Sahn Lockshier lives in Oxford CT with Barbara his wife of 52 years. Alan C. Mack joined the Army upon graduating High School. His desire to see the world as a US Army helicopter mechanic took him to the Republic of Korea, West Texas, and the Federal Republic of Germany before attending Warrant Officer flight school at Fort Rucker, Alabama. The nearly year-long flight school yielded a UH-1H, Huey, and CH-47D, Chinook, aircraft qualification before his first pilot assignment in Savannah, Georgia. Timing is everything, as he arrived in time to progress with his new unit as a copilot in Operation Desert Shield. Then, several months later, he flew combat missions in the lead aircraft penetrating deep into Iraq. Upon his return to the United States, he quickly achieved the status of Pilot-in-command and eventually assumed the coveted role of Night Vision Goggle Unit Trainer. The NVG UT position is a precursor to flying as an Instructor Pilot (IP). Another assignment to the Republic of Korea was in store for Alan before attending the CH-47 Instructor Pilot course at Fort Rucker, Alabama. The call to adventure was persuasive, drawing Alan into the special operations community as an MH-47 pilot. Hard work and relentless training vaulted him to the top of his peer group as a Flight Lead and standardization instructor pilot. His experience and leadership traits put him at the forefront of several clandestine special operations, some still too classified to discuss in an open forum. Not many Warrant Officers have the opportunity to command a unit, but Alan was entrusted with the United States Military Academy Flight Detachment at West Point, New York. With his military career approaching thirty-six years, he elected to retire and join public service. CW5 Alan C. I spent most of my career working in the shadows. While some of my service was spent with large groups, such as the 32nd Marine Amphibious Unit, serving in Beirut in 1982, I spent most of my career working on small teams or alone. We often lived and worked with foreign military units like a Kuwaiti tank unit in the northern desert in 1996. In 1998, I worked alone in Yemen. Trouble spots on my own became my specialty. After 9/11, I launched to Uzbekistan in the vanguard for 5th Special Forces Group and served on several teams in Afghanistan during 2001 and 2002, participating in major combat operations alongside Afghan indigenous forces. Often, my mission was to enter a country to determine if other special operations forces could safely follow and operate. If so, I would develop the situation and make ready for them to arrive. In 2002, after departing Afghanistan, I moved to a mid-Eastern location to prepare the way for the next conflict. Working independently and conducting successful, often classified missions on several continents taught me the power of prudence…and the skills that must accompany it. CSM (Retired) Jesse D. Boettcher, a native of Luck, Wisconsin, enlisted in the US Army Reserves as an Infantryman in 1988, and entered active duty in 1990. CSM(R) Boettcher’s first overseas assignment was with the 3rd Infantry Division in Wurzburg, Germany. In 1992 he was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division at Ft. Campbell, KY to serve in the 1/327 Inf. Scout Platoon. In 1995 CSM Boettcher attended the Special Forces Qualification Course. After graduation, he returned to Fort Campbell, KY to serve on ODA 551 in 2nd Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group (A). In 1998, CSM Boettcher volunteered for selection and subsequent assignment with a Special Mission Unit. He served as part of the National Mission Force for 12 years as an Assaulter, Sniper, Team Sergeant, and Troop Sergeant Major. In 2010 CSM Boettcher became the first enlisted Soldier to be selected for the Army’s Congressional Fellowship Program. After working on Capitol Hill for a year as Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison’s (R-TX) military assistant, CSM Boettcher worked as the Congressional Liaison for HQ US Army Special Operations Command. He then served in Afghanistan for a year as the CSM of ISAF-SOF. His final job in the Army was in Germany, where he served as the CSM for 1st Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group. CSM Boettcher has numerous deployments throughout the Middle East, Africa, and the Balkans, including 11 combat deployments. Ish Villegas was born in Mexico City, and grew up in Del Rio, Texas. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force on August 6, 1997, and he completed basic training at Lackland AFB, Texas, in October 1997. Airman Villegas then attended Combat Control Team training at Lackland AFB (Combat Control Orientation Course); Keesler AFB, Mississippi (Combat Control Operator Course); Fort Benning, Georgia (U.S. Army Airborne School); Fairchild AFB, Washington (U.S. Air Force Basic Survival School); Pope AFB, North Carolina (Combat Control School); Hurlburt Field, Florida (Special Tactics Advanced Skills Training); Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and Yuma Proving Grounds, Arizona (U.S. Army Military Freefall Parachutist School); and Panama City, Florida (U.S. Air Force Combat Divers School) between October 1997 and September 1999. Sgt Villegas served as a Special Tactics Operator, Combat Control Team member with the 21st Special Tactics Squadron of the 720th Special Tactics Group at Pope AFB, North Carolina, from September 1999 to March 2004, and then as a Combat Control Team member with the 321st Special Tactics Squadron of the 352nd Operations Group at RAF Mildenhall, England, from March 2004 to November 2010. His next assignment was as a Combat Control Team member back with the 21st Special Tactics Squadron at Pope AFB from November 2010 to August 2011. SMSgt Villegas served as a Special Operations Recruiting Liaison at Lackland AFB, Texas, from 2011 to 2014, and then served as NCOIC of Assessments and Selections with the Special Tactics Training Squadron at Hurlburt Field, Florida, from 2014 to 2017. His final assignment with the Special Operations Command Care Coalition at JBSA Fort Sam Houston, Texas, from 2017 until his retirement from the Air Force on May 1, 2020. Hawes completed BUD/S in 1963 and received orders to the newly formed SEAL Team 2. Hawes subsequently volunteered for duty in Vietnam and became one of the first SEAL officers permanently assigned there as part of CIA's OpPlan 34-A, governing covert operations into North Vietnam. That led to his clandestine CIA mission to build and command a mercenary navy in the Congo in 1965-66. After several years working for the Agency, he attended Harvard, receiving his MBA in 1971. He finally settled in Asia, living there for 34 years and pioneering a variety of business enterprises, including specialized shipping and commercial real estate. Darrell M. Blocker is a former American intelligence officer who served for 28 years with the Central Intelligence Agency. He held prominent positions including deputy director of the Counterterrorism Center (CTC), Chief of Africa Division, and Chief of Training at Camp Peary, Virginia, better known as "The Farm". Within the intelligence community, Blocker was known for participating in a number of semi-professional musical ensembles during his postings abroad. He retired in 2018 as the most senior black officer in the CIA's Directorate of Operations. Holden Triplett has extensive international and domestic experience in national security and intelligence matters, especially with respect to their impact on businesses and private enterprises. In addition to his work at Trenchcoat, Holden is an adjunct professor at Georgetown University’s Walsh School of Foreign Service, where he teaches a course on Chinese Intelligence, Security and Influence. Holden left the FBI in mid-2020, after almost 15 years of service. In his last position, Holden was the FBI Faculty Chair at the National Intelligence University where he taught courses in Counterintelligence, National Security Law and Intelligence, and Chinese Intelligence and Information Warfare. In 2017, Holden was designated the Director for Counterintelligence at the National Security Council. While at the White House, he led the development of counterintelligence policy for the United States; drafting Presidential Directives and legislation to protect the U.S. government and the private sector from exploitation by foreign governments. Holden has substantial overseas experience. He served as the FBI’s senior official in the People’s Republic of China from 2014 – 2017. During his time in Beijing, Holden was the primary U.S. interlocutor with the Chinese security services on a number of cyber intrusion and economic espionage matters involving U.S. companies. Immediately prior, he was an FBI representative to the Russian Federation in Moscow for two years, where he engaged with the Russian security and intelligence services. Following the Boston Marathon bombing, Holden persuaded Russian security services to provide wide-ranging investigative support to the FBI. He conducted joint activities in Dagestan and other locations in the Caucasus. Holden previously served as the FBI representative to the Joint Task Force on Terrorism Financing in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in 2008. Earlier in his career, Holden was assigned to the FBI’s New York City office. In New York, Holden gained significant national security and intelligence experience, conducting sensitive investigations and enforcing over 300 federal statutes. In addition, he successfully led an effort to enhance the office’s intelligence capabilities. Later, Holden managed a counterintelligence team of special agents, intelligence analysts, forensic accountants, and linguists dedicated to protecting the United States from a national security threat country. A unique assessment of American military involvement in Syria, written by three very different authors who between them participated in all large Kurdish operations between late 2014 and mid-2016, experiencing first-hand the impact America had on the battlefield. With America’s War on Terror and the subsequent democracy experiments in Afghanistan and Iraq having turned into geopolitical disasters, the US military campaign in alliance with the Kurdish forces in Syria remains a rare success story. Considering the overwhelming military victory, the functioning Kurdish civilian governing structures that followed the fighting, the extremely light military footprint and the strong link to Kurdish partners, many political analysts, military experts and politicians in Washington, DC, judge the intervention against ISIS in Syria as the nation’s most successful campaign since World War II. However, since neither these experts nor many journalists were on the ground during the fighting, they struggle to explain exactly how this particular operation turned into a just war. The authors, however, were there. Between the three of them, they fought for over two years with the Kurdish forces. They participated in all the large Kurdish operations against the Islamic State between late 2014 and mid-2016. They endured muddy archaic trench warfare, witnessed the first waves of decisive US and British airstrikes against ISIS, and experienced the impact America had on the battlefield. Later, when American, British and French Special Forces were deployed at the front lines, the authors worked closely with those teams when they evacuated hundreds of wounded from the battlefield together. Joan Barker is a consultant specializing in military language and culture training. She has worked on educational contracts for U.S. Special Operations Command and overseas as a trainer with partner forces in the United Arab Emirates and Afghanistan. From 2017 to 2018 she worked on a defense contract in Kabul teaching English to members of the Afghan air force and Special Mission Wing (SMW). After the fall of Kabul, Barker spent months advocating for the evacuation of Special Immigrant Visa interpreters, as well as vulnerable members of the SMW. She also worked to highlight the issue of moral injury affecting veterans of the war in Afghanistan. Gail's Bio: I came to King in 2014 after nearly a dozen years at the Central Intelligence Agency, where I worked on issues related to East Asian security, politics, and governance. I had the privilege of traveling the world, and writing for and briefing the senior-most policymakers in the US Government. The opportunities I was given were amazing, and I appreciated every one — but in reality I always wanted to teach, and I was never a city girl, so I was thrilled to have the opportunity to move to northeastern TN and teach at King. I was recruited by the CIA out of a PhD program at the University of Arizona, where I was studying political science/international relations, with an emphasis on China. I have a M.A. in political science from Iowa State University, and a B.S in political science from the University of Nebraska at Kearney. I am the Coordinator of the Security and Intelligence Studies Program here at King, and also serve as the Director of the King Institute of Security and Intelligence Studies. I am also the faculty adviser for KSI–a great group of students interested in global events and security and intelligence-related issues. I teach classes in analysis, which are intended not only to teach higher level critical thinking skills that government agencies expect prospective employees to possess, but also to prepare students to succeed in graduate school. I also teach classes in intelligence ethics, counter-terrorism, and I will be teaching a new class in Chinese history and politics in the Spring 2016 semester. My research interests center around democratization and liberalization, human rights (I know, shocking for a former CIA officer!), and political stability. I also have a strong interest in Chinese history and politics, particularly how Western influence, and particularly Western religion, has impacted the development of China’s politics. Amy Forsythe began her career as an enlisted military journalist in the U.S. Marine Corps and has included two tours of duty in Iraq and three in Afghanistan in addition to several other overseas locations. The AC-130 Gunship was quickly developed in 1968 to provide fire support for ground forces in Vietnam. Twenty-eight C-130 cargo aircraft were converted into AC-130s for night attack operations. The AC-130 was crude, ugly, ad hoc, and detested by many within the USAF…but it worked, and it worked well. Likewise, AC-130 crews were deemed unruly “biker gangs,” but performed magnificently in every major US military operation from 1976 to 1995. Most of these combat operations were cloaked in secrecy, but records once classified for up to twenty years have now been opened. Based on this newly declassified information and hundreds of interviews with SOF veterans, Ghostriders 1976-1995 is the first authoritative historical account of the AC-130 operations, written by an AC-130 Aerial Gunner who participated in every AC-130 combat operation from 1980 through 1994.
