Meet Manuela. We met this L.A. founder in our Community and in PRO, and we positively fell in love with the simple beauty in her nonprofit's mission. After rolling up her sleeves to work on the frontlines of orgs she believed in, she moved from a homeless foundation to running Prince's foundation (yes, you read that right. "That" Prince💜☔️) before starting her own foundation, "In A Perfect World" empowering young people around the world to take action and be kind. She's talking about how to co-create natural empathy in Generation Alpha and how she's seen education be the great equailizer of human vibrancy. Her life 's story is fascinating, heroic, empathetic and reveals one of those amazing founders stories where top brass is first in line and deepest in the trenches - for good. Inspiring! 💡

Episode Highlights

  • Manuela’s story and journey to where she is today (3:00)
  • The founding story of In a Perfect World Foundation (11:30)
  • Inspiring and empowering the next generation: an overview of In a Perfect World’s flagship programs (22:45)
  • Manuela’s vision for In a Perfect World Foundation (30:10)
  • How you can get involved with In a Perfect World (38:00)
  • A powerful moment of philanthropy in Manuela’s life (42:00)
  • Manuela’s One Good Thing: A little by little, a little becomes a lot. (44:00)

Meet John. He's tired of seeing donor advised funds sitting around unspent. He's democratized the DAF world, and he wants you and your kids to be an active part of the giving community. You see, once he recognized a need to make giving more accessible and more effective, he launched Charitable Impact which nurtures generosity within each person and bring resources for creating change in the world to everyone. In short, it's a super cool giving platform that makes even a $5 feel like a serious investment in philanthropy.  Together, we're talking basics (what the heck is a donor advised fund?) but also talking about how to make our personal philanthropy intentional rather than reactive.

Episode Highlights

  • John’s story and journey to where he is today (2:00)
  • Donor fatigue and the current state of giving today (8:30)
  • Giving proactively vs. reactively (15:00)
  • An overview of Donor Advised Funds (18:00)
  • Features and benefits of DAFs (24:00)
  • Addressing hoarding within DAFs and Foundations (31:00)
  • An overview of Charitable Impact (34:00)
  • A powerful moment of philanthropy in John’s life (41:00)
  • John’s One Good Thing: Ask yourself: Are you charitable? (46:00)

And some of us may have been on the sidelines as it was unfolding. She wants you to know the signs and know what to say if you or a staff member experience something similar. It's raw and real. Pull up a chair. We think there's much to be learned from this shared experience.

About our Sponsor Givebutter

Givebutter powers more than 35,000 good causes with their end-to-end fundraising solution - and we love it because it's completely free. Givebutter empowers missions across the country and those on the frontlines of de-stigmatizing mental health, like NAMI Nevada.

Throughout the pandemic, quarantine and social distancing requirements were contributing to a massive increase in anxiety and depressive disorders across their state. So NAMI Nevada put together an innovative fundraiser powered by Givebutter to introduce the greater Nevada community to ways they can move forward—no matter the circumstance they were dealing with.

They eclipsed the goal of their crowdfunding campaign and shared how much they loved Givebutter’s ease of use and the power of its human-to-human connectivity to grow their impact.

You can watch their full success story at the link in our shownotes, and or learn more at givebutter.com.

Welcome to Mental Health Week on the We Are For Good Podcast. It's Day 1, and today's episode cuts close to home. Becky is sharing her personal mental health journey. We're glad you're here.

You know Becky. For the most part, she's bubbly, outgoing, happiest when she's juggling a million tasks and never misses an opportunity to effusively love on someone. But there was a season where she was just wasn't any of those things. She was not ok. And the great irony was she was working on a multimillion dollar mental health campaign when she experienced her own mental health collapse. It was scary. It was isolating. It was all too much. And she doesn't want anyone experiencing those feelings alone. She's busting through stigma to share her mental health crisis story, and she's hoping doing it in community will help you recognize symptoms for yourself and others. It's not a sad story. It's an empowering one. Join us🎧

Episode highlights

  • Becky’s personal mental health journey (4:10)
  • The stigma around mental health (28:00)
  • Mental health in the nonprofit sector (30:00)
  • Things that Becky has learned (39:00)
    • Talk to someone.
    • If you don’t want to talk, just find someone to hold you.
    • Alone and quiet time is essential.
    • Set boundaries.
    • Ask for help.
  • What Becky would say to her younger self (48:00)

We heard plenty of feedback that you liked our new series Friday Convos with Young Professionals, so we're excited to dive into what happens after you've landed the job. It's week two, and we're chatting about What to Do in the First 30 Days on the Job. We're walking through how to connect with volunteers, integrate with the team and instilling habits into your work. So fun having this "do as I say, not as I did" conversation we wished we would've known 20 years ago. 🎧
