Yasir Qadhi was born in Houston, Texas and completed his primary and secondary education in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. He graduated with a B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Houston, after which he was accepted as a student at the Islamic University of Madinah.
After completing a diploma in Arabic, he graduated with a B.A. from the College of Hadith and Islamic Sciences.
Thereafter, he completed a M.A. in Islamic Theology from the College of Dawah, after which he returned to America and completed his doctorate, in Religious Studies, from Yale University. Currently he is teaching at Rhodes College, in Memphis, TN.
Shaykh Yasir Qadhi now divulges details on a very important incident in the life of the Prophet ﷺ - the 'Ilaa'.
What is Ilaa? It's an oath made to Allah, wherein the husband can choose to stay away from his wife in the event of a marital dispute or clash for a period less than 4 months.
Allah revealed Qur'an because of this incident where the Prophet ﷺ took abstinence from his wives for a month. This was when he was married to all 9 of his wives - Sauda, A'isha, Umme Salama, Juwayriyya bint al-Harith, Zainab bint Jahsh, Umme Habiba, Safiya bint Huyay, Ramla bint Abi Sufyan and Maymunah bint al-Harith RA.
For want of a better lifestyle and mode of living, the two wives of the Prophet ﷺ - Aisha RA and Hafsa RA - went to him and pressured him into leaning towards their idea. This resulted in the rumours doing the rounds after some time about the Prophet ﷺ having divorced his wives. This news made its way to Umar RA was was flabbergasted and made a rush to the home of the Prophet ﷺ to inquire into the matter.
The Prophet ﷺ was housed in the attic room of his house where after seeking permission from the servant for the third time, he gained entry into the room. After some conversation, he understood that the Prophet ﷺ had taken an oath to Allah that he would abstain from his wives for one month.
After the duration of this one month had finished, he made a visit to the house of A'isha RA. And he asked her a few things based on the revelation that the Prophet ﷺ had received in Surah Ahzab verses 28-29. What was it? Listen intently.
Based on that, the Prophet ﷺ asked his wives to make a decision. That what was their preference? A lifestyle of richness and bliss (which would be theirs but in exchange for the loss of the companionship of the Prophet ﷺ) or a lifestyle of humbleness and servitude, which could only be achieved with the Prophet ﷺ by their side and they would be blessed with rewards in this life and the Hereafter.
It was obviously a no brainer for the wives and each one of them chose to stay with the Prophet ﷺ.
Shaykh Dr. Yasir Qadhi delves into a topic that is marred by uncertainties and it is Salafism. In this lecture, he takes on the challenge to dissect the doubts in our mind regarding the Salafī movement and we are also provided with answers on how to maintain unity in the wake of this predicament.
In earlier era,the term 'Salafī' resonates with an Islamic methodology whose primary motive is the emulation of the Prophet ﷺ. In this, the era of the Prophet ﷺ, his teachings, the Revelations and similar facts are put into use to perfect the pure and perfect religion of Islam.
Despite this, the people who follow make or break a methodology as is the case here. The textual ideals of Salafism devoid of imbibing practicality in the real world we live, makes it a problem and errors are bound to surface. This is exactly what has happened over the years and these inconsistencies have cost the pillar of Salafism to be surrounded by doubt.
Hence, Shaykh Yasir Qadhi implores the followers of Salafism to adopt a more ecumenical approach so that their heritage doesn't crumble and holds firm.
Shaykh Yasir Qadhi now moves on to discuss the predicaments that were a part of the life of the Prophet ﷺ.
The major part of this lecture is focussed on yet another tragedy in the life of the Prophet ﷺ - the death of his son, Ibrahim. The mother of Ibrahim was Maria RA.
Who was Maria or Maria bint Shamun? She was gifted to the Prophet ﷺ by Juraih ibn Mina who was the king of Egypt. The reason for this gift was in reply to the letter that the Prophet ﷺ had sent him to convert to Islam. The king sent two sister slave girls - Maria and Sireen.
The Prophet ﷺ gifted Sireen to Hassan ibn Thabit RA and this union resulted in a son named Abdur Rahman ibn Hassan ibn Thabit.
Though the Prophet ﷺ was gifted Maria and she also bore the Prophet ﷺ a son, we do not as Muslims view her as a mother of the believers.the reason being she was a concubine initially, who when bore a son, got upgraded to the stature of Umm Walad. This meant that she was a wife to the Prophet ﷺ and her son was a valid inheritor of the possessions of the Prophet ﷺ. And, after the death of the Prophet ﷺ, she was free.
In Dhul Hijjah of the 8H, Maria gave birth to Ibrahim. But this happiness of the Prophet ﷺ was only short lived. Ibrahim lived for a year and four months only and sickness got the better of him. The Prophet SAW prayed his Janazah and he was buried in Jannatul Baqee where he remains till this day.
Numerous controversies and issues cropped up relating to Maria RA and a few make the cut in this lecture. Among them, is with regards to Aisha and Hafsa RA. what happened? Why were verses revealed in the Qur'an about this issue? What was the result of this issue? Shaykh Yasir Qadhi explains.
Shaykh Yasir Qadhi continues about the delegations sent and we are in the final part of this topic.
The delegations are as follows:
Banu Hanifa - The leader was Musaylimah al Khadhab
Azd - The large tribes of Yemen, who were placed under Surad ibn Abd'Allah al Azdi
Himyar, from Yemen
Banu Kuld
Christians of Najran
And many more.
Thus, we see that in the 9 H, Islam expanded considerably in Arabia such as that from Yemen, Najran, Oman, Najd etc. Hence, an Islamic State is formed and history is created in the fact that the entire Muslim Ummah is joined under one political entity.
We learn numerous things from the incidents :
People exhibit different levels of Iman and not everyone falls in the same stature as that of Abu Bakr RA, Umar RA and more such greats of Islam.
Masjids can also function as a place of hospitality for the Non Muslims and there is no issue with that as is seen in the case of the tribe of Taqif.
On the arrival of delegates, the onus is upon us to host them to the best of our ability and means as deemed fit.
Shaykh Yasir Qadhi continues to divulge details on the different delegations that were sent as part of their prerogative to make as many as possible people convert to Islam.
A few listed in this lecture are as follows:
Wa'il ibn Hujr - He is from the town of Hadramaut, Yemen
Delegation of Taif - Urwah ibn Mas'ud, who was the leader of the Taqif tribe in Taif accepted Islam.
The conversion of the pagans of Taqif was a long and arduous process as their belief in idols was unparalleled. How did the impossible then become possible? Listen intently to discover interesting facts.
An interesting issue that happened in Taif is relating to the statement made by the Prophet ﷺ to the people of Taif wherein he told them initially that they need not pay Zakat and do Jihad, only to withdraw the statement and reverse his statement. What made him do this?
He believed that the light of Iman would finally make a foray into their hearts even though they were opposing now.
The leader has the right to accept aforesaid conditions for new Muslims for a short duration of time but he can at any point in time reverse his decision in order to implement the right rules of Islam.
Shaykh Yasir Qadhi divulges details on the happenings of the 9th year of Hijrah which is also called the ‘ Year of Delegations'. It is not as if delegations did not happen prior to this, but this year was special as the number had reached large numbers.
What comprises a delegation? It is when a tribe sends a representative to negotiate with the Prophet ﷺ on their eagerness to embrace Islam or not.
There are 15 delegations of interest and are discussed elaborately. Some of the delegations discussed in this lecture are:
Abdul Qais - the Christian tribe who lived close to modern day Bahrain.
Banu Sa'd ibn Bakr the tribe of Haleema RA.
Banu Amr ibn Sa'sa - the tribe that was responsible for the well of Bir Maoona
Tamim ad Dari - a christian from a northern tribe.
There is also an interesting miracle that transpired when the tribe of Muzayana came to embrace Islam and the Prophet ﷺ asked Umar RA to refill their food supplies. What was this miracle? Listen intently as Shaykh Yasir answers.
Shaykh Yasir Qadhi now elaborates on the tafsir of Surah Tawbah in the light of the Battle of Tabuk.
After the return of the Prophet ﷺ, there was the death of the leader of the Munafiqun - Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salool, who was involved in the battle of Uhud where he backstabbed the Muslims and also played a major part in the horrendous and most terrible deed which is the slander of Aisha RA.
Another topic of discussion is the beginning of Surah Tawbah. It is the only Surah which does not begin with 'Bismillah.' Why is there no Bismillah? There are two opinions which warrant some understanding:
Uthman RA , who was in charge of the compilation of the Mushaf , said that the reason for this was the joining of Tawbah with Anfal because the content is basically the same.
When Ali RA was asked by one of his sons about the same question, he said that Surah Tawbah is precisely when Allah cuts off his ties with the pagans and thus, it is deemed unfit to begin the Surah with mercy and so is the case for the rest of the Surah which is very harsh.
The tafseer of this powerful Surah Tawbah is explicitly explained and we gather unsurmountable evidence on the plight of the pagans in the wake of disobedience to Islam.
Shaykh Yasir Qadhi now moves to the final part in the series related to the famous Battle of Tabuk.
We begin with the six things that the Prophet ﷺ instructed to be counted before the Day of Judgement. Among them, a few are:
The death of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
The conquest of Baitul Maqdas .
Two plagues that would eliminate .
A fitnah that no house of the Arabs (Muslims) will be unaffected by it.
A truce between Muslims and Romans."
A prominent incident that transpired in the duration of Tabuk 20 nights was related to Abdur Rahman ibn Awf RA what was this coveted privilege and honour? He was only among the two behind whom the Prophet ﷺ prayed in his lifetime.
Also, in this time,Abdullah dhul be Jardain died and the Prophet ﷺ showed his ultimate care and affection for his people by giving him a befitting burial.
On the way back from Tabuk, a number of events unfolded. The Prophet ﷺ passed by Al Hijr, the place of Thamud and the people of Saleh. The Sahabas were perplexed and enquired him about the same. What did the Prophet ﷺ answer? What was the wisdom behind this? Shaykh Yasir answers.
Another appalling incident that happened was the assassination attempt made on the Prophet ﷺ by the Munafiqun. When the Prophet ﷺ was atop a cliff on a dangerous location along with Ammar ibn Yasir and Hudhayfa, some bandits attempted to take charge of the camel of the Prophet ﷺ. They were going to throw the Prophet ﷺ from the cliff and obviously they failed badly due to Allah’s help.
The Prophet ﷺ finally returned back to Madinah after almost 50 to 60 days and he was welcomed rejoicing by the people of Thaniyatul Wada'a.
Shaykh Yasir Qadhi now discusses the happenings on leaving Madinah enroute the Battle of Tabuk by the Prophet ﷺ.
Post passing the Thaniyat Al Wada, the Prophet ﷺ paused to organise the troops into battalions, leaders, sub-leaders and many more such divisions. Mu'adh ibn Jabal RA narrated that the Prophet ﷺ prayed Fajr on the way to Tabuk where he stayed for 20 days and the people were on their camels. An incident happened there relating the camels which makes for an interesting listen. The Prophet ﷺ gave a Khutbah the first thing in the morning of their arrival to Tabuk.
In addition to the above incident, he also sent Khalid ibn Waleed with a small entourage on a mini expedition to one of the neighbouring tribes in Tabuk called Jomatul Jandan which was a very famous and one of the largest Christian Arab tribes in Arabia. They were on amicable terms with the then emperor of Rome and were renowned for their bravery and warriorship,
The Prophet ﷺ gave clear instructions to Khalid Ibn Waleed RA of the whereabouts of their chieftain - Ookaydil and how he ought to be captured.he followed the instructions to the tee. Though it was a bit odd, Khalid RA achieved success and the emperor was captured and brought to the Prophet SAW where he agreed to sever all ties with the Romans, pay the jizya to the Prophet ﷺ, and not harm the Muslims. In a similar fashion, other tribe leaders also agreed to side with the Muslims and hence, imminent victory against the Romans was a given.
Shaykh Yasir Qadhi now elaborates on the events that are happening in preparation for the Battle of Tabuk.
Amongst them, the first and foremost is the collection of money for the Battle. Many incidents occur in this time such as the famous incident of the competition between Abu Bakr As Siddeeq RA and Umar Ibn Al Khattab RA for the largest amount of money that would be given. Eventually, Umar RA had to accept defeat at the hands of Abu Bakr RA as he knew heart in heart that it would be impossible to match what Abu Bakr RA was ready to part with to please the Prophet ﷺ.
Other incidents that occur are related to Abdur Rahman ibn Awf RA who gave 200 ooqiyas for the battle.but the story that triumphs all of these is the story of Uthman ibn Affan RA who gave the largest amount of his wealth for the battle.
The story of Al Waathida Al Asqa is also an interesting one where he had promised a reward of granting his share of the Ghanimah for the one who would take him on the Ghazwa (he was a bit delayed). The story of Abu Kaythama al Ansari is next up for discussion and his situation was almost the same as that of Ka’b Ibn Malik. But he ultimately made it. How did it happen? Also, an interesting incident is related to Abu Dharr al Gifaali who seemed to be having some problems with his camel.
The construction of the Masjid Durar by ibn Salool stands out as one of the key developments of the battle of Tabuk. What was Allah’s instruction to the Prophet ﷺ on this Masjid?
Allah revealed Surah Tawbah from verse 107 to 108 highlighting this particular masjid as a cause of harm, kuffar, division of the believers, pain and immense suffering and hence, Allah asked the Prophet ﷺ to not step inside or anywhere in the vicinity of the Masjid.
Shaykh yasir Qadhi continues to shed light on Ka’b Ibn Malik and how he got his forgiveness from Allah and what transpired next.
When Ka’b Ibn Malik heard that he had been forgiven and all the Sahaba had rushed to congratulate him for the same, he rushed to meet the Prophet ﷺ where Talhah Bin Ubaidillah stood up to greet him. This was a huge moment for Ka’b and he cherished it to the most.
There are numerous benefits that one can derive from the story of this sahaba, some of which are listed below:
The permissibility of telling the stories of sinners and repenters.
The permissibility of boasting of your achievements.
The continuity of the nobility of your existence.
Narration of sins if confined to permissible limits.
The stature of the sacrifice done by the Sahaba in the way of Islam and as a measure of complete obedience to the Prophet ﷺ.
The measure of ur Tawbah is decisive on the measure of the guilt you feel.
The mishaps of delays and procrastination
The importance of commiting to always say the truth.
Hypocrisy is valid when excuses are made to accomplish good deeds.
Clear confrontation with your frank feelings when dealing with a Muslim.
Necessity of being a bit harsh when required.
Pain and suffering cleanses us of our sins.
Victory is eminent at our weakest moment and in the darkest time.
We also derive Fiqh benefits from this beautiful story:
The permissibility of non Muslims entering Mecca and Madinah albeit for a legitimate reason.
Buying and selling from people of other faiths.
Permissibility of entering the semi private property of someone when one is certain that it would not be a cause of concern or dispute.
Sajda e Shukr
Sharing of good news with the largest number of people one can.
Shaykh Yasir Qadhi divulges details about the Battle of Tabuk and we gather some more details.
In this lecture, the most prominent story that is discussed is that of Ka'b ibn Malik and what transpired with him in the time of the battle of Tabuk. We also extrapolate valid lessons to imbibe and inculcate regarding sins and their repentance.
Who was Ka'b ibn Malik? He was from the Ansar, particularly from the tribe of Banu Salama. He has the honour of converting to Islam before the Prophet ﷺ immigrated and also was a part of the Baiatul Aqabah.
Procrastination became the ultimate undoing of Ka'b Ibn Malik when he could not be a part of the Ghazwa Tabuk. But he was defended wholly by Mu'adh ibn Jabal RA. When the Prophet ﷺ returned to Madinah, Ka'b Ibn Malik rushed to offer his apologies with the hope that he would be forgiven. But he along with Murara ibn Rabiah and Hilal ibn Umayyah were forbidden from being talked to by anyone in the entire city of Madinah for 50 nights.
Meanwhile, he also receives a letter from the Gassanid king asking him to side with them - only with the sole purpose of destroying the unity and brotherhood of the Muslims and also to comprehend the functioning of the Muslims in order to be better prepared.
What happens at the end of 50 nights? Does he get acceptance of the repentance he had so wholeheartedly wished for and for which he tried his ultimate best? Yes, Allah did accept their repentance after 60 nights.
Shaykh Yasir Qadhi now moves on to the topic of the battle of Tabuk and a detailed description is discussed in the lecture.
The battle of Tabuk took place in the month of Rajab, 9 H. What was the reason behind the occurrence of this battle? The meaning of Tabuk is shared and we get the reference from the Prophet ﷺ when he refers it to a type of spring. Why did the name of the battle get named so? Listen intently to discover the details. Another name that is synonymous with this Ghazwa is that of 'Jaysh Al Usra'. What is the reasoning behind this? It is an interesting one.
This particular battle was a very difficult one. There are some reasons for this:
The size of the Muslim army was the largest that Arabia had ever seen.
The length of the distance that had to be undertaken by the Muslim army was the largest that they had ever attempted.
The Prophet ﷺ began accumulating funds for the battle and clearly, a huge amount was required. Most of the Sahabas contributed generously and the largest share was that of Uthman Ibn Affan RA.
Shaykh Yasir Qadhi recaps for us the previous lectures in the series and in particular we reacquaint ourselves with some of the benefits that can be extracted from the battle of Hunayn and the siege of Ta'if:
Trust in Allah should be at the forefront and the basis of every victory about which the Muslims had a brief lapse.
Being drawn towards worldly desires, power, ambition and wealth is a given with mankind as was even shown in the case of the Ansar when the Ghaneema was being distributed.
The mode of action that should be adopted when dealing with past offences.
Thorough understanding of the human psychology is paramount as was also exhibited by the Prophet ﷺ.
The topic of the prisoners of war and subsequently the issue of slavery in Islam.
The conversion of Ka'b ibn Zuhair to Islam after the battle of Hunayn.
Very clear laws have been stated with regards to slavery such as:
Islam only allowed one source of slaves - prisoners of wars who weren't ransomed.
Legislated proper treatment of the slaves.
What was the impact of the battle of Hunayn and Ta'if?
A clear victory in hijaz with the entire tribe converting to Islam.
Complete abolishment of Idolatry such that it resulted in the annihilation of shirk completely from Arabia and within 22 years of the Prophethood of the Prophet ﷺ.
Conversion of the entire tribe to Islam.
Shaykh Yasir Qadhi now delves into a very interesting and mesmerising topic which is the miracles of the Prophet ﷺ.
What is a mu'jiza or a miracle? A mu'jiza is anything that the remainder of mankind is incapable of recreating and it is something that we are unaccustomed to. It proves the claim of Prophethood to a large extent but it is not the only factor for designating oneself as a Prophet. It is the sunnah of Allah that he has sent Prophets with miracles to reassert the fact that the human who is a Prophet has been sent down by Allah SWT.
Imam al Bayhaqi accounts around 1000 miracles that have occurred in the life of the Prophet ﷺ. Hatim ibn Hajar, the master of hadith, quotes Imam Nawawi that there are approximately 1200 miracles documented from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
There are 10 categories of miracles that transpired in the life of the Prophet ﷺ:
Miracles related to inanimate objects.
Miracles with animals.
Miracles with food and water.
Allah’s protection given to the Prophet ﷺ.
Knowledge of the unseen given to the Prophet ﷺ.
Predictions of the future.
The healing of the Prophet ﷺ.
Immediate response to his Dua.
Stories of the previous Prophets.
Miscellaneous.
Shaykh Yasir Qadhi delivers an amazing lecture on the Fiqhs of Umrah.
What is Umrah? The explanation given is a beautiful one. Umrah gets rid of sins and poverty just like a furnace gets rid of impurity from iron. Next, the Shaykh discusses the rewards and benefits of Umrah, followed by the Fiqh rulings and most common issues pertaining to Umrah to the house of Allah.
The Prophet ﷺ performed four Umrahs in his lifetime - an Umrah during Dhul-Qa'dah; the Umrah of Al-Hudaibiyah, an Umrah with his Hajj, and an Umrah from Al-Ji'ranah when he divided up the war spoils of Hunain.
Benefits of Umrah:
Expiation of sins
Eradication of poverty and attainment of wealth in your life.
Jihad of weak people such as elderly and women.
Mutamir are the guests of Allah - if they ask, then Allah will give them.
Increase the acceptance of Dua
Basics of the Fiqh of Umrah:
Arkan of Umrah - Ihram, Tawaf, Saee
Wajibat of Umrah - entering into Ihram at Meeqat, shaving or trimming of the hair.
Sunnah of Umrah
What is the Meeqat? What is Ihram from a Fiqhi perspective? The concept of Talbiyah is also pondered upon. It should be said incessantly when in Ihram until one arrives at the Bait al Haram.
What should not be done in Ihram?
No shaving or cutting hair
No cutting nails
No perfume
No stitched garments for men
No garment should be covering the head for men and women are not to wear niqab or gloves
No acts of intimacy
What is Tawaf and Saee? Shaykh Yasir Qadhi answers explicitly and also some Hadiths are shared relating to Zamzam.
Can we do multiple Umrahs? Various positions of Imams are shared and we get a clear opinion on the same.
Shaykh Dr. Yasir Qadhi makes a critical analysis in the magnitude of difference between the Du'a of Adam AS and the Du'a of Shaytan.
After eating from the forbidden tree as against the command of Allah, Adam AS supplicated for forgiveness in front of Allah SWT and Allah in His Infinite Mercy forgave Adam AS.
In a similar fashion, Shaytan or Iblis too supplicated to Allah SWT after disobeying His command. Iblis was also granted what he wished for.
So, what is the difference between these two situations? The difference lies in what was asked and how it was asked to Allah. Listen intently and be riveted in the lecture.
Shaykh Yasir Qadhi delves into the story behind the conversion to Islam of one of the most illustrious poet of the time - Ka'b ibn Zuhayr who was the son of Zuhayr ibn Abi Salma. Zuhayr was a celebrated poet himself having written the seven hanging poems. He had died before the advent of Islam but his son Ka'ab had huge animosity for the Muslims writing poetry against them and also belittling women in the worst way possible.
Ka'ab thought about conversion to Islam on the insistence of his newly converted Muslim brother and this brings him to Madinah to the Prophet ﷺ. And he eventually does enter the religion of Islam. How does it happen? Listen intently.
'The poem of Banat Su'ad' is an important topic for discussion which was given the name - 'the poem of the Burda'.how did this come to be?what is the story behind this? There are two Burdas: the original Burda (cloak) which is the original one and this is was written by Ka'b.
When the Prophet ﷺ heard this poem, he was immensely moved and hence, he took off his cloak and handed it to him. Imagine! This could be the unparalleled prestige and honour that could be granted to a poet. The version of the Burda that is commonly recited in this time is - the Burda of Busairi.
Also, Shaykh Yasir discusses the incidents that transpired between Tufail ibn Amr and the destruction of the idol named Dhil Kafayn. Also, the story of Ali ibn Abi Talib being sent on a mission to At-Thay for the same purpose make up the next part of the video.
The death of the daughter of Prophet ﷺ, Zainab bint Muhammad who was his eldest daughter happened in the 8H. Zainab, Ruqayyah and Umm Kulthum RA - this is the order of the death of his daughters. Fatima RA died 6 months post the death of the Prophet ﷺ.
Shaykh Yasir Qadhi makes a detailed lecture on the incidents that transpired in the battle of Hunayn.
When the Muslims were helped by the angels sent down by Allah during the course of this battle, some of them did see the angels or felt their presence and one amongst them was Jubayr ibn Mut'im who was the son of Mut'im ibn Adi.
The returns of the battle, the ghaneema was the most that the Muslims had ever laid hands upon - 24,000 camels, 40,000 goats and much more. The Prophet ﷺ accumulated all this in a valley called Ji'ranah.
When the returns of the war were being distributed amongst the Quraysh such as Abu Sufyan, Safwan etc, the Ansar had a feeling of being left out from this although they were an essential part of the battle and they were the most trusted of the lot to the Prophet ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ senses and asks for all the Ansar to be gathered in one room. What transpires next? What does the Prophet ﷺ say to them? Does it have the desired effect? What is the wisdom in the decision made? Get all these answers by Shaykh Yasir Qadhi and take a moment to feel mesmerised by the man that Prophet ﷺ is.
The story of Shayma is next up in line for discussion and is an interesting one that is worth a listen.
The battles of Badr and Hunayn have been mentioned in the Qur'an and there are similarities of sorts in both these battles. How so? Badr was a spiritual victory and Hunayn was a financial victory. Allah sent angels down in both these Ghazwa and also, the Muslims won these battles because of the appropriate and timely assistance that was meted out to them in the difficult, trying and testing times.
The next point is the Umrah that the Prophet ﷺ did from Jiranah. How many Umrahs have been done by the Prophet ﷺ? And how did they happen? Shaykh Yasir Qadhi answers.
Shaykh Yasir Qadhi now moves on to the Battle of Hunayn and what set this battle into action and all the other relevant details.
The Prophet ﷺ was weary of the news doing the rounds of the possible attack of the tribe of Ta’if - Taqif and the Hawazim in order for them to regain control of the Kaaba, to gain leadership of mecca after the Quraysh who had been defeated and also to re assume idolatry.
The Prophet ﷺ after gaining help from some , headed towards Hunayn and arrived there on the 10th of Shawwal. The chieftain of the tribe of Taif was Malik ibn Awf A-Nasri.
The Taqif knew their area inside out thoroughly which was a given. They used it fully to their advantage. They tricked the Muslims into gathering in a valley by presenting some of their army members while in reality, their archers were mounted atop the mountains and were waiting patiently for all the Muslims to gather collectively. This is when the Taqif started bombarding the Muslims with arrows and this led the Muslims to flee like there was no tomorrow.
The Prophet ﷺ witnessed this and made a plea citing tribal loyalty and love for Islam as the enticing factors to bring back the Muslim to the battlefield. He first called the allegiance bearers of Hudaybiyyah followed by the Ansar and then the rest. When they had all been brought to the valley, the Prophet ﷺ threw dust onto the face of the archers and they were left completely blinded and hence, the arrows proved useless in this scenario.
Shaykh Yasir Qadhi sets the tone for the conclusion of the series on the conquest of Mecca by sharing the benefits, morals and Fiqh in this regard. The conversions of two people are discussed in the start and they are Umme Hane and Abdullah ibn Za'bari.
During the 19 day stay of the Prophet ﷺ in Mecca, he taught a few important things:
The sanctity of Mecca was reinstated.
Prohibition of sale of alcohol, idols and carcasses.
Prohibition of zawaaj mut'ah.
In this time,he also sent a number of expeditions around Mecca to spread the message of Islam to the neighboring tribes and destruction of all forms of idols. The temple idols were destroyed on the instruction of the Prophet ﷺ to Khalid Ibn Waleed RA.
Khalid Ibn Waleed once made a serious lapse of judgement and committed a grave error and this involved the tribe of Banu Jadeema. He was entrusted with the job of inviting them to Islam. But a misunderstanding ensues. What was it? What prompted Khalid RA to kill them? Listen intently and discover.
When the sad news reached the Prophet ﷺ, he stood up, faced the Ka'bah and raised his hands. What did he say?
A few Fiqh benefits we derive from this lecture:
Women are permitted to take money from the husband without their knowledge if done for a valid reason.
Sale of a Haraam item is also haram.
Salatul Duha was prayed in 8 rakaat by the Prophet ﷺ.
Shaykh Yasir Qadhi continues from the previous video and we get acquainted with many more incidents and happy turn of events post the Khutbah of the Prophet ﷺ standing in front of the door of the Ka’bah.
The first thing he does is assigning Bilal RA the coveted, prestigious and honourable task of standing on top of the Ka'bah and giving the Adhan. Thus, Allah honoured Bilal RA to be the first ever muadhin in Mecca. The Qadr of Allah is highlighted here and should be celebrated. The very same man who used to cry out aloud while being persecuted is now the same voice that has been chosen by Allah SWT at the time of power.
How do the elites of the Quraysh such as Abu Sufyan, Harith ibn Hisham and Itaab ibn Aseer accept Islam despite being disbelievers even at the time of the Adhan by Bilal RA? Shaykh Yasir Qadhi divulges details.
The Prophet ﷺ now stays in Mecca for 19 days and is giving the oath of allegiance to the Quraysh men and women and the Ansar too.The bulk of the people swore allegiance but some delayed it among which were Fudaala ibn Ubaid, Safwan ibn Umayyah, Suhail ibn Amr and Abu Quhafa.
Shaykh Yasir Qadhi discusses the events happening in the Conquest of Mecca and many highlights are seen.
The Prophet ﷺ divided the entire Muslim army into three major contingents which were Ansaris, Muhajiroun and a mixture of the two. Sa'd ibn Ubadah was heading the Ansar and
Khalid ibn Waleed was heading the Muhajiroun and the middle army was being led by Abd Ubaidah Amr ibn Jarrah. Totally, there were 700 Muhajiroun, 4000 Ansar in the Muslim army. One incident that happened was the handing over of the banner to Zubair ibn Al Awwam from Sa’d. What happened that led to this incident?
On the 20th Ramadan, 8H, the Prophet ﷺ finally achieved victory over the city of Mecca. What did the Prophet ﷺ do when he emerged victorious? What were the things that he did as he went around Mecca celebrating his victory and the victory of the Muslims after 21 years? Listen intently and be mesmerised by the sheer beauty of the emotions running in his mind.
After cleansing the Kaaba of idols, pictures of various people and making the Kaaba pure, the Prophet ﷺ addressed the gathering via a short Khutbah in front of him comprising of the people of Mecca, Ansar, Muhajir and more than 12,000 people. The Prophet ﷺ gave the keys of the Kaaba to Uthman ibn Talha who was handling this responsibility from before.
The conquest of Mecca was unique in every which way as in :
Zero war gains - no booty
Zero prisoners of war
No land acquired
The Prophet ﷺ did not give amnesty to the following people from Mecca:
Ikrimah ibn Jahal
Abdullah ibn Khatal
Mikyas ibn Subaba
Abdullah ibn Abi Sar'ah
Fartana
Sarah
What had they that they were deprived of mercy even though our beloved Prophet ﷺ was the epitome of mercy? Who were the ones who were executed? Shaykh Yasir Qadhi answers.
Shaykh Yasir Qadhi continues his lecture on the conquest of Mecca and he discusses some major conversions to Islam that took place in this time.
We begin with the conversion of the uncle of the Prophet ﷺ, Abbas. When did he convert to Islam? This is a topic of a lot of discussion and controversy. Some opinions have been brought to the fore by the Shaykh and deserve a fair listen.
The next conversions to be discussed are that of Abu Sufyan ibn Al Harith ibn Abdul Muttalib who was the first cousin of the Prophet ﷺ and another cousin of the Prophet ﷺ named Abdullah ibn Umayyah ibn Mughira. The Prophet ﷺ accepts their conversion after a lot of compelling and pleading as they had not supported or shared the ideas and beliefs of the Prophet ﷺ with him many a time in the past despite being cousins.
The next magnanimous story of conversion is that of Abu Sufyan ibn Harb ibn Umayyah, the chieftain of the Quraysh. What a story this is! The sheer circumstances under which this magical and seemingly impossible event transpired is a lesson in itself that needs to be imbibed and inculcated. Please listen intently and be amazed by the Qadr of Allah.
Shaykh Yasir Qadhi now continues to shed light on the Conquest of Mecca and we move forward from the Prophet ﷺ arrival at Mecca.
Meanwhile, a sahaba named Hatib ibn Abi Balta'ah warns the Quraysh about the advent of the Prophet ﷺ into Mecca. Who is Hatib? He was a mawla from Yemen and now to one of the Quraysh. He had written a letter to the Quraysh which bore the same message and he asked one of the ladies to deliver this letter across in utmost secrecy.
The Prophet ﷺ was informed of this development when Allah sent Jibreel AS with the information. The Prophet ﷺ in turn appointed Zubair ibn Awwam and Ali ibn Abi Talib to retrieve the letter from the lady. When his plan is exposed, Hatib is brought in the presence of the Prophet ﷺ and we realise the actual reason behind Hatib committing such a shameful act. Be sure to be mesmerised by the response of the Prophet ﷺ to this.
There are numerous points of wisdom that is imparted via the story of Hatib and some of them can be enlisted below:
The supreme knowledge of Allah SWT which overrides everything else that you might possibly know.
The power of Dua.
We have to put effort before we place our trust and belief in Allah. Only then can we be assured of help.
The humanity of the Sahaba.
The trait of forgiveness in the Prophet ﷺ is insurmountable.
The importance of verifying reports before acting upon it.
Shaykh Yasir Qadhi now dives straight into the topic of the Conquest of Mecca in immense detail.
After the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, the tribes of Banu Kuzaa (Muslims) and Banu Bakr (pagans sided by the Quraysh) had a sort of a raid and the Banu Bakr were assisted by Suhail ibn Amr, Safwan ibn Umayyah who gave them permission to venture outside of the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah and commit this breach of trust.
The raid becomes a disastrous failure but the chieftain of Kuza'a, Amr ibn Salam al Kuzaee is angered beyond normal and he approaches the Prophet ﷺ and informs him of the breach of the treaty. The chieftain also asks help by giving three major points of consideration? What are they?
Abu Sufyan, the chieftain of the Quraysh, arrives at Madinah begging the Prophet ﷺ to annul the attack that has been planned by the Muslims for their breach of treaty. He receives no assistance from anyone in Madinah including his own daughter whom he had not met for 13 years, Umme Habiba RA.
The Prophet ﷺ makes an announcement that an expedition of large magnitude is going to be undertaken and that every male should be a part of it. The Sahabas were curious to know the destination but the Prophet ﷺ was adopting an approach of complete secrecy since he didn't want rumours to flare or even vital information to escape. He left Madinah on the 10th Ramadan, 8H to reach Mecca on the 19th of Ramadan.
Shaykh Yasir Qadhi now moves on to to discuss the Battle of Dhat Al Salasil. But before that he also indulges in a quick recap of the entire Seerah completed uptil now.
He touches base on different topics ranging from the early life in Mecca, the atrocities the new Muslims faced in Mecca at the hands of the pagans, the self imposed exile meted out by the Prophet ﷺ and the Muslims on themselves in order to relieve their torture and troubles in Mecca, the various battles fought in the light of Islam such as Badr, Uhud, Ahzab, Mu’tah and many more.
The climax of the Seerah is the Conquest of Mecca and here, the Shaykh divulges details on the smaller expeditions that preluded this conquest. Among them was the Ghazwa of Dhat Al Salasil that took place in Jumada Al Thani, 8H against the tribe of Kuda'a who had helped the Ghassanids during the battle of Mu’tah. This battle was asked by the Prophet ﷺ to be led by Amr ibn Al As alongside 300 men. This ghazwa is called so because of its name which is also the name of a pond that was Dhat Al Salasil.
An incident transpired between Amr and Abu Ubaidah. What was it and why did it happen? How did it get resolved. Get your doubts answered by Shaykh Yasir Qadhi. We also get acquainted with the man named Muhalim ibn Juthaama who was a man of hateful character. How did he die? What do we learn from his death? Listen intently to find out.
Shaykh Yasir Qadhi continues from where he left off in the last video which is the events that transpired after the martyrdom of the three chiefs - Zayd Ibn Harithah RA, Ibn Rawawah RA and Jafar RA.
The next point of discussion is the conclusion of the result of Battle of Mu’tah. Was it a victory or a loss for the Muslims? A variety of opinions are contemplated upon and some are listed as follows:
According to the position of Musa ibn Uqtah, Al Bayhaqi and Ibn Kathir, this battle was definitely a victory since the Muslims returned successfully with the least amount of causality, they got war booty and also because of the word of the Prophet ﷺ himself calling it a victory.
Historians such as Al Waqidi, ibn Sa'ad etc declare the Battle of Mu’tah to be a loss because the Muslims lost three major leaders along with their flag, the Muslims had to retrace their steps backwards but nothing of the sort happened with the Romans.
The position of Ibn Ishaq, Ibn Abdul Baar, Ibn al Qayyim certified this battle to be neither a defeat or victory because neither side attacked the other at the end of the battle , and neither sides took any prisoners of war.
Many positions of the Sunnah come to light through this battle:
In the event of a death or tragedy, the relatives and friends should come to the forefront and offer assistance in any way possible.
Words of encouragement and consolation ought to be given.
Visiting the family of the deceased should be advocated but avoid socializing for extended periods of time.
Shaykh Yasir Qadhi elaborates on the next major battle in the history of Islam which is the Battle of Mu’tah. It was also called 'jaysh al umara' - 'the army of leaders'. This battle was fought on Jamadal al Awwal in 8H which boasted of an army of 3000. Why did this name come to be? The Prophet ﷺ had previously never appointed as many leaders ( three of them) as he did in this battle.
Mu'tah was actually the name of a small village which was a part of the Roman province currently in Jordan. Why did this battle take place?there are many reasons among which are that it was to avenge the death of Al Harith ibn Umayr, the messenger of the Prophet ﷺ and also because this battle was sort of a prelude to the future battles against the Romans. The Prophet ﷺ wanted to ascertain amongst everyone including the Sahaba that Islam is a global message and it ought to spread its wings outside the Arabian Peninsula.
Who is Abdullah ibn Rawahah? He was an Ansari who participated in the treaty of Aqabah and he was the privileged one whom the Prophet SAW sent back from Badr to give the news of the success of Badr. What role does he play in this battle? Listen intently to discover details.
Zayd ibn Harithah RA, Jafar RA and Ibn Rawahah RA died martyrs in this battle and the grief and sadness of the Prophet ﷺ was beyond measure.
Shaykh Yasir Qadhi explores the nuances relating to the Umrah Al Qadah which they did to compensate for their missed Umrah at Hudaybiyyah. The Prophet ﷺ left from Madinah to Mecca in 7H with around 2000 muslims.
Rumours were rife amongst the people of Quraysh that the Muslims of Madinah had been weakened due to being affected by diseases. Thus, in order to prove their good health, certain measures were exercised upon the insistence of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ such as raising their voices loud with Talbiyah, exposing their right shoulder while doing the Umrah and engaging in brisk walking around the Kaaba. And it did make an impression on the Quraysh as the rumours ended immediately.
The Prophet ﷺ married Maymunah bint al Harith RA when he was in Mecca for the Umrah. He released himself from Ihram before marrying her. There is conflict on this incident and Shaykh Yasir elaborates on them and puts our doubts to rest.
After Umrah al Qadah, three people from the Quraysh converted to Islam and this illustrates the magnitude of the impression created by the Muslims on the Quraysh. They were :
Amr ibn Al As - The statesman and politician of the Quraysh.
Khalid ibn Waleed ibn Mughira - genius of a military leader of the Quraysh.
Uthman ibn Talha - The keyholder of the Ka'bah.
Shaykh Yasir Qadhi picks up the topic of the various letters and emissaries the Prophet ﷺ sent to various rulers after the battle of Khaybar.
The first letter was the letter to Najashi which was a message to accept Islam giving the emperor the promise of Allah forgiving his sins and encouraging him to come to the religion of Allah.
The second letter was sent to Caesar, the emperor of Rome whose name was Heraclius. The Prophet ﷺ wrote to him to submit to the will of Allah and if done, he would be safe. Otherwise, he would have to face the wrath of Allah in one way or the other.
The next letter was sent to the emperor of Persia whose name was Khosrau bearing the same message as the above.
Benefits of these letters:
Every single letter that was sent to a foreign land resulted in the conversion of that land to Islam which was the ultimate divine Qadr of Allah.
The response of the rulers are of theological significance for us.
It is not haraam to imitate the norms of culture and western customs as long as we conform to the Shariah of Islam.
Shaykh Yasir Qadhi begins this lecture with a discussion on one of the wives of the Prophet ﷺ named Ramlah bint Abi Sufyan, the daughter of Abu Sufyan , leader of the Quraysh, who was also known as Umme Habiba. Shaykh analyses the reasoning behind proposing marriage to the Prophet ﷺ proposed to her, the leader of the Quraysh.
The wives of the Prophet ﷺ:
Khadija RA
Sauda RA
Aisha RA
Hafsah RA
Zainab bint Khuzayma RA
Umme Salama RA
Juwairiyah RA
Zainab bint Jahsh RA
Ramlah bint Abu Sufyan RA
Next is a discussion on the stories relating to Huyayy ibn Aktar, the leader of the jews of Banu Nadheer, the marriage of the Prophet ﷺ with Safiya bint Huyay ibn Akhtar and many more. The Prophet ﷺ had immense love for her which made the other wives considerably jealous and hence, she didn't enjoy their support.
After the battle of Khaybar, came the magnanimous event in the history of Islam that set the precedent for the maximum number of recorded Hadith by a single person and he was Abu Hurairah RA. His actual name was Abdur Rahman ibn Sakar and he came from the tribe of Ad-Daws.
Shaykh Yasir Qadhi goes on to discuss the pointers regarding the marriage of the Prophet ﷺ to Zainab RA and what was the importance of this event.
Zainab or Bara was a Qurayshi from the tribe of Banu Khuzayma whose mother was Umaima bint Abdul Muttalib. The Prophet ﷺ sent a proposal to her for his 'adopted son' Zaid Ibn Harithah RA who was called Zaid ibn Muhammad. But Zainab RA rejected this proposal initially claiming lack of calibre and status of the groom. But after the revelation of the verse in Surah Ahzab, she agreed.
When did the Prophet ﷺ marry Zainab? The marriage was a luxurious affair and it was the best till date. The speciality and the greatness of this marriage is illustrated in various Hadith. In Bukhari, Anas RA said "the verse of hijab were revealed regarding Zainab's marriage. And Zainab would boast to the other wives 'Allah has married me from above the seven heaven'." In another version she would say "as for you, your fathers and brothers married you off to the Prophet ﷺ, as for me Allah married me to the Prophet ﷺ". What is the story behind this? Shaykh Yasir Qadhi elaborates further.
There are 2 main versions to the story of the marriage of the Prophet ﷺ to Zainab RA and both versions have been explicitly explained also citing the pros and cons of each. Do listen intently to fully comprehend this event .
Zainab RA was called the mother of the orphans and poor and rightly so as she never ran behind money and lived a life of piety and simplicity. She considered money to be a Fitnah. In 20 H, she became the first wife of the Prophet ﷺ to expire. Umar RA prayed her janaza.
Shaykh Yasir Qadhi now moves on to the next major pre - emptive battle which resulted in the expulsion of the jews from the city of Madinah finally. He begins by giving a quick recap on the way they reached Arabia, their origins, the events that transpired and much more.
The first tribe to be expelled was the Banu Qaynuqa followed by Banu Nadheer and then Banu Quraydha. The final tribe was executed for treason as has been elaborated upon in previous lectures. The first two tribes moved to Khaybar and began making their existence there. Their leaders were Huyayy ibn Akhtab and Salam ibn Abul Huqayq who were clear and hostile enemies of the Muslims in Madinah. They were the sole Jew troublemakers and threat for the Muslims and needed to be dealt with .
So the Prophet ﷺ gathered an army of 1700 men and marched towards Khaybar in the month of Muharram. After a long fight against the people of Khaybar, the Prophet ﷺ hands over the flag to Ali Ibn Abi Talib RA to take charge and do not return until they have testified that Allah is the One and only Lord and Muhammad ﷺ is His Messenger SAW. Otherwise, they will cease to be protected from the Muslims.
Ali RA killed Mirhab and claimed the biggest victory for the Muslims, after claiming the fortress of Na’im and As Sa’ab. With the defeat of the castle of Zubair, the Muslims proclaimed victory on one half of Khaybar. The other half of Khaybar constituted 9 mini battles and was certainly not a walk in the park for the Muslims.
Eventually, victory was achieved and so as a safety net, the people of Khaybar struck a deal which was lucrative to the Muslims. What was the deal? Listen intently and be mesmerised by the unique ways in which Allah’s Qadr works.
As a result of the battle of Khaybar, the Quraysh were now even more vulnerable and felt demoralised. The people of the land of Fadak also agreed to the exact same conditions as the people of Khaybar and hence, without even stepping foot there, Allah gifted the land of Fadak to the Prophet ﷺ from which he managed the expenses of his family.
Khaybar was without an iota of doubt, the greatest conquest seen in the seerah of the Prophet ﷺ as it resulted in a huge amount of Ghanima - land, sheep, goats, food, armour, weapons and much more.
Shaykh Yasir Qadhi discusses the Tafseer of Surah Fath in this final part of the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah and we realise that this Surah was revealed in its entirety - in one go at a single time.
Next up for discussion are the Seerah benefits, the theological benefits, the Fiqh benefits and the modern political benefits of the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah.
Seerah Benefits - this includes making the Quraysh recognize muslims as equals, bringing about a sense of peace and security to permit the Muslims to look into other major pressing issues in the city of Madinah, interaction of the Muslims and pagans without any fighting , mixing of the pagans and the Muslims and promotion of buying, selling, spreading of the message of Islam which led to many more converts to Islam.
Theological Benefits - The issue of Al-Fa'l was clearly elaborated upon, the permissibility of using the remains of the Prophet ﷺ wudu, spit, hair and many more to seek blessings, the issue of ascribing the happenings of any events to anyone other than Allah, the issue of Qadr, the explicitness of the Qur'an and the Sunnah removing all need for anyone else’s opinion on religious issues.
Fiqh Benefits - The permissibility of engaging in peace treaties with a completely evil enemy, the removal of one’s Ihram in the event of discontinuity of Hajj or Umrah for a legitimate reason only and hence, to shave his hair, sacrifice the animal and consequently remove his ihraam.
Modern Political benefits.
Shaykh Yasir Qadhi now begins to elaborate on the incidents that happened after the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah came into effect.
The first incident is related to the son of Suhail ibn Amr - Abu Jandal. On hearing of the return of the Prophet ﷺ to Madina, Abu Jandal who was captured at the hands of the Quraysh made a headway to Hudaybiyyah. But his father demanded that his son be returned to him abiding by the clause. Thus, the Prophet ﷺ had to return Abu Jandal but asked him to never lose hope.
What happened next? Listen intently to inculcate the very same trait of Abu Jandal - uninhibited and unabashed love for Allah and His Messenger ﷺ.
The next important incident is that of Umar RA anger due to the terms of the Treaty and how it was a blatant disregard for the Muslims and how the Prophet ﷺ could have agreed to the terms and conditions. He is calmed down by Abu Bakr RA.
To release themselves from the state of Ihram which they had assumed when they had made the decision to got to Mecca, the Prophet ﷺ followed by the Sahabas shaved their hair, sacrificed their camels and headed back to Madinah.
Umar RA now feels the need to apologize to the Prophet ﷺ for his lapse in respect and regard for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. So he tries his best to strike a conversation with the Prophet ﷺ but is met with no response. Finally, when the Prophet ﷺ calls him, he is elated and overjoyed beyond measure and this makes way for the Prophet ﷺ to recite the verses of Surah Fath which was Allah’s revelation to honour the Sahabas who had participated in the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah. Allah has praised them with profound and beautiful poetry and hence, Umar RA doubts are finally put to rest.
When and how did Prophet ﷺ miss his prayers? What happened that caused a lapse of this sort? Shaykh Yasir Qadhi divulges details and it is very amazing to know and gives us some assurity on missed Salah for genuine reasons.
Shaykh Yasir delves into the events that transpired after Uthman Ibn Affan RA was sent to negotiate with the Quraysh.
As Uthman RA entered Mecca, he was met with stiff opposition. But with the assistance of his cousin, Abaan ibn Saeed ibn Al Aas, he was able to enter Mecca easily.then, Uthman RA met with Abu Sufyan who is his cousin from the Banu Umayyah. The Prophet ﷺ had asked of Uthman RA to meet all the Muslim converts and comfort them and reassure them of Allah’s presence and help. These meetings and negotiations took a longer time than expected and hence the sahabas began to fear for Uthman RA and assumed the worst - that he had been killed.
The rumours reached the ears of the Prophet ﷺ and he decided to avenge the death of Uthman RA. A crier was sent to all the muslims that Jibreel AS has come down to the Prophet ﷺ asking the Muslims to give allegiance to him to pledge to fight the Quraysh to death. This oath was called 'Bayat Al Ridwan'.1400 sahaba participated in Baiatul Ridwan. As for the pledge of support of Uthman RA, the Prophet SAW himself took the oath on behalf of him. These people are given a status right after the Badriyoon.
When this development reached the Quraysh they sent an official delegation with Mikras ibn Hafs. But it was unsuccessful and hence, the senior most and highest level delegate, Suhail ibn Amr was sent to consolidate a negotiation.
The Prophet ﷺ and Suhail agree to form a treaty and Ali ibn Abi Talib RA was the scribe for this treaty. The following were the terms and conditions of the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah:
There will be no fighting between the two parties for the next 10 years.
Any person was free to choose the party he wanted to pledge his support to.
If any Makkan went to Madinah, then Muslims would return him to Makkah, but if any Muslim from Madinah went to Makkah, he would not be returned.
That year the Muslims would go back without entering Makkah. And Muhammad ﷺ and his followers could enter Makkah the next year, spend three days and perform Umrah.
This agreement was a blatant disregard for the wishes of the Muslims but Allah had planned a better and far more lucrative deal for the Muslims as shall be seen in the realization of a great victory for the Muslims.
Shaykh Yasir Qadhi takes off from where he had left the previous lecture which discusses the strategies undertaken by the Muslims and the Quraysh during Hudaybiyyah.
To counter the Muslims who were camped at Hudaybiyyah, the Quraysh launched a surprise attack from Tan'im at around Fajr. The plan failed miserably as the Muslims were more than prepared to tackle them and so the Quraysh had to surrender.
The next stage was the negotiations and how the constant exchange of emissaries took place to bring forth a mutual consensus. One of the leaders of Khuza'a volunteered to be an emissary and he was not Madani or Qurayshi - Budail. The first person to be sent for negotiation from the Quraysh was Uruwa ibn Masud who belonged to the tribe of Taqif. What transpired between these two parties makes up a chunk of the important lecture and should not be missed.
The Quraysh also send Al Hulays ibn Alkama from the tribe of Kinana to which the Prophet ﷺ sent a Qurayshi. Who was this? It was Umar ibn Al Khattab RA. Why was this choice made? Simply because of his strength and bravery. But in a surprise turn of events and citing valid reasons, Umar RA suggests to the Prophet ﷺ that Uthman Ibn Affan RA is the better choice of candidate. How so? Get your queries answered as we listen further into the lecture.
The suggestion is taken into account and is accepted by the Prophet ﷺ and so he send Uthman ibn Affan RA for a negotiation. What happens next?
Shaykh Yasir Qadhi now begins to discuss one of the most fundamental chapters in the history of Islam - the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah. This was a stepping stone of sorts to the conquest of Mecca which is also called ‘a clear victory’.
During the 6th year of the Hijrah, the Prophet ﷺ dreamt that he was doing tawaf, wearing ihram and shaving his head all of which depict the Umrah. So, the Prophet ﷺ took this as a sign from Allah and shares his intention to do umrah. The Sahaba display intense excitement and they leave from Madinah to Mecca on the 1st Dhul Qa'dah, 6H.
The Prophet ﷺ reaches the miqaat of Madinah called Dhul Hulayfah, and he offers two rakat there before heading towards Mecca after which he assumed the state of Ihram. Then he consecrated the animals, and sent a sahabi Busl ibn Safwan al Kazaai to go to Mecca and gather information on the Quraysh. Busl informs the Prophet ﷺ that they have armed themselves and have sent Khalid ibn Waleed to camp near Kumayn - which is a plane right outside Mecca.
After having spent the entire day walking and well into the nightfall do they finally reach Hudaybiyya. This is when the camel of the Prophet ﷺ refuses to budge and everyone comes to a complete standstill. The Sahabas complain of the stubbornness of the camel. But they are rebuked by the Prophet ﷺ on their thought and instead he says that it is a sign from Allah and hence, should be adhered to strictly.
Hence, they camped there and went to the well of Hudaybiyyah where, the water had completely dried out which sent the sahabas into a state of frenzy due to lack of any more water with them.the Prophet ﷺ then showcased a miracle and with that water began to fill the well. The entire camp of sahabas of 1400 people drank from that well.
Shaykh Yasir now expands our knowledge by delving into the incidents that transpired between Khandaq and Hudaybiyyah. Our Prophet ﷺ sent 14 Sareeahs and participated in two Ghazwas in between Khandak and Hudaybiyyah.
The first incident to be discussed is the minor expedition of Muhammad ibn Maslamah involving 30 sahabah to deal with the tribe of Banu Bakr.
An important story is that of Thumamah ibn Uthal". Thumama was the chieftain of the tribe of the Banu Hanifa whose tribe was as big as that of the Quraysh.
The assassination of Sallam ibn Abu al-Huqayq was an expedition that was undertaken by the Prophet ﷺ and it was a risky proposition to go to Khaybar where Sallam was housed. Five people joined hands with their leader who was Abdullah ibn Ateeq.
The next incident that is shared is the ghazwa of the Banu Lihyan. Do listen intently to unravel the fine details.
The final story is about the sareeah of Zayd ibn Harithah to a place known as Al-Ees and also a mini expedition called Sareeah-tul Kabat.
Shaykh Dr. Yasir Qadhi analyzes and comprehensively elucidates on the events that led up to the martyrdom of Husayn RA and other relevant details.
The lecture commences with the status of Ahlul Bayt for the Sunni Muslims which is proclaimed with genuine love for the entire blessed clan.
The Prophet ﷺ once called Ali and Fatimah and Hasan and Hussain RA and put them under a cloak and said, “They are My family.”
In another Hadith, Abu Bakr RA said to Ali RA: I swear By Allah that I would rather be kind and generous to Ahlul Bayt than my own family”
The next part of the lecture deals with the Shaykh divulging differences between Ahlul Bayt and twelve Shia. Listen intently.
Hussain Ibn Ali RA was born in Shaban, 4 H and Hassan RA was born in Ramadan, 3 H.Hassan and Hussain RA are renowned as the leaders of the young men of Jannah. The Prophet ﷺ once said “They are my two rayhanatayyah – two sweet flowers of this world, two blessings of this world”Hussain RA was greatly respected by the companions so much so that once Abdullah Amr bin Al As RA was once sitting in the shadow of the Kabah and when he saw Hussain coming, he said,” This man is the most beloved man on earth to the inhabitants of the heavens!”
Hussain RA and his brother Hassan RA both witnessed the Battle of Jamal and Siffeen and with the demise of Ali RA, Hassan RA was handed over Caliphate by the people of Kufa and Muawiya became the Caliph by the people of Syria.
The next part of the lecture deals with Yazid and the coming of power to Yazid. It is a very informative topic that sets the tone for future events. Yazid ibn Muawiyah ibn Abu Sufyan ibn Sakhr ibn Harb ibn Umayyah belonged to the tribe Banu Umayyah. Abu Sufyan is Yazeed’s grandfather. The massacre of Hussain and Ibn Zubayr are the tainted incidents during the rule of Yazeed.
The names of the following blessed Sahaba make a space for discussion and analysis and we are acquainted with these greats to have walked the face of the earth. They are:
Abdullah ibn Umar
Abdullah Ibn Zubayr RA
Hussain ibn Abi Talib
The lecture is concluded with a vivid and descriptive account of the massacre of Karbala and what transpired in the midst of the political greats and how this incident came to be known as the biggest tragedy.
Shaykh Dr. Yasir Qadhi divulges details on the reason behind calamities and tragedies in our lives and what is Allah showing us through them?
Wisdom of calamities and musibah in our lives:
The Rabb is All Powerful and we are his abd.
To understand that our knowledge is limited.
No one has the right to challenge Allah on the happening of a calamity. Whenever we question Allah’s Hikmah, we do not portray belief.
When we are faced by a calamity,we can distinguish real faith from virtual faith of the creation.
When evils come, they bring out the good in people.
Allah wants us to taste the consequence of some of our misdeeds in this world.
It is a trial that brings us closer to Allah SWT.
Allah has praised patience in the Qur'an like nothing else. Patience can only come in the face of a calamity.
Calamities and afflictions remind us this world is not our ultimate destination.
Shaykh Yasir Qadhi summarises the main lessons of Surah Al Kahf. Some of the benefits and themes of this magnificent Surah are as follows:
Points related to the revelation of the Qur'an.
Rewards and punishments of Allah.
Role of the Prophet ﷺ.
Life is full of trials and we can only overcome them by believing in Allah and having Iman and Tawakkul of Allah as is seen in the four stories mentioned in the Surah.
Praise of Allah SWT at all times.
Muslims should have a general care and concern for the whole of humanity, physically and spiritually.
We should never speak without knowledge.
This life is temporary and short and we should always be in preparation of the Hereafter.
The importance of keeping good company and having righteous friends.
Allah controls each and every aspect of our lives and nothing happens without His Will.
The dangers of arrogance.
Those who believe in Allah, have strong Iman and Amal and do good deeds will enter Jannah.
Shaykh Yasir Qadhi now discusses verses 105 to 110 which deal with the connection between Eman (faith) and A'mal (action) and also, the Conclusion of Surah Al Kahf.
“Verily those who believe and do righteous deeds there is for them Gardens of Paradise for their entertainment.”
The verses imply that the Garden of Jannah contains all the bounties and among it is the Firdaus that is the best and the most privileged gardens of Paradise.
“Say: ‘If the sea became ink for (writing) the Words of my Lord, the sea would certainly be exhausted before the Words of my Lord were exhausted, even though We brought the like of it to help’.”
Kalimat Rabbi means the divine promises and the created things or Divine revelations and whatever has a sign from Allah. Thus, everything on this earth with its each and every cell is one of the Words of Allah.
“Say: ‘I am only a mortal like you. It is revealed unto me that your God is (only) One God. Therefore, whoever hopes to meet his Lord (in Hereafter) let him do righteousness, and make none sharer of the worship due unto his Lord.”
The last verse of Surah Al-Kahf contains a collection of fundamental principles of the religious beliefs such as Unity, Resurrection and the Prophet hood of the holy Prophet ﷺ.
Shaykh Yasir Qadhi discusses verses 99 to 105 that deals with the Day of Judgement, the Blowing of the horn,Seeing Jahannam (Hell), the verdict of those who never heard of Islam and those who will be at the greatest loss.
“…and the Trumpet will be blown, then We shall gather them (all) together.”
From these verses, we gather that at the end of this world and at the beginning of the coming world, there will happen firstly, destruction of all human beings and the living creatures and secondly, the resurrection of the dead.
“And on that day, We shall present Hell to the disbelievers exposed (to their view).”
The Hell, with its different painful punishments will appear before us in its entirety and clarity and its mere observation itself is a dreadful punishment for us.
“Say: ‘Shall We inform you of the greatest losers in (their) deeds?” “Those whose effort is lost in this world’s life, while they think that they are working good deeds.”
We gather insight on the true meaning of being the biggest losers and how it would be.
“They are those who disbelieved in the signs of their Lord and meeting Him (in Hereafter) so their deeds became null, and on the Day of Resurrection We assign no weight for them.”
The verses imply that the disbelievers who denied the Divine Revelations and the Rewards of Allah have spoiled their deeds and hence, will not be worthy and respectable with Allah on the Day of Resurrection. He will not heed them, He will despise them since they have nothing which can be worthy and measurable. There will be no scale for them on the Day of Hereafter since they have nothing of worth to weigh on it.
Shaykh Yasir Qadhi discusses verses that relate to Ya'juj and Ma'juj, their story and the 10 major signs of the Day of Judgement.
Who were Yajuj and Majuj? Yajuj and Majuj are mentioned in two surahs of the Qur’an - Surah Kahf and Surah Al-Anbiya. We gather numerous insights into the two in this lecture and should be listened to intently.
There are 10 major signs of the Day of Judgment:
Coming of Dajjal
Coming of Isa AS
Coming of Yajuj and Majuj
Earthquakes in East, West and Jazeerah Arab
The emergence of Dukhan - The Smoke
The emergence of Dabbah - The Beast
The Sun rising from the West
