“Personally, it's always been the mission… We're willing to be patient. But we're also very keen on what the mission is. It’s not to stop at championships. It's not to stop at fast times. It's not to stop at American Records. It's not to get content. We are here to completely push the boundary every time. I'm very vocal about that...I've posted what my time goals are for the World Championships. I'm here to run 9.65 and I'm here to run 19.10. The crazy thing is it causes so much controversy. Why should my dream or belief cause controversy with you? It has nothing to do with you. If I don't get it, and if I do get it, how does it change your life? So many people want to have an opinion on it. And so many people want to tell me what I can and can't do. But you know what they can’t tell me? What I ran in practice yesterday. And I bet that's the information you need to know if I'm going to actually run it or not.”

Two-time world champion and Olympic bronze medalist Noah Lyles jins the CITIUS MAG Podcast to break down all of the biggest revelations in his new two-part documentary series with NBC Sports. "Untitled: The Noah Lyles Project" premieres on Friday, August 18 exclusively on Peacock. We managed to get an advanced look at the documentary and were able to record this interview before the series debuts.

At the upcoming World Championships in Budapest, Lyles will attempt to defend his 200m world title and has been open about the fact that he is trying to break Usain Bolt’s 200m world record. The documentary follows him in training, at the New York City Grand Prix, the U.S. Championship and Paris Diamond League.

Part II of the documentary series will follow him through the World Championships and will air on Friday, September 15 – one day before the Diamond League Final at Hayward Field in Eugene.

"Now, I can focus on coaching and connecting with individuals to see what their needs are as an athlete. The time that I will have to be able to do that will make a huge impact on the athletes and the Atlanta Track Club because I’ll have more to give that way…There will be a lot of time for me to also be involved with Atlanta Track Club’s outreach in the community. I’m looking forward to being part of that. "

Tommy Nohilly has been hired as the next head coach of Atlanta Track Club after three years working alongside John Tautmann as the founders of Empire Elite. Nohilly brings nearly two decades of coaching experience with him after working closely under the guidance of legendary coach Frank Gagliano at the New Jersey-New York Track Club from 2009 to 2020.

He also previously worked as a master technician at Wharton Performance in New York City and put his exercise science degree to use there and with his own work as a physical therapist.

As an athlete in the late 80s and 90s, Nohilly was an NCAA champion in the steeplechase and competed professionally at three U.S. Olympic Trials. He finished fourth twice and barely missed making Team USA for the 1992 and 1996 Summer Games. He competed at the 1995 and 1997 World Championships.

We’ve been big fans of Tommy at CITIUS MAG since he used to coach Kyle and I’ve worked on a few stories and projects with him over the years. Get to know the new Atlanta Track Club head coach ready to take the team to a new level.

“I think the only time I thought about that American record was that last 100m because I was like, ‘You have to beat Elise no matter what. If you guys are going fast enough and you’re not in front of her, she’s going to get it.’ I think I barely outleaned her and ended up getting sixth. The results took forever to load and come up on the screen but when they did it was such a party because everyone set their national record. Seven of us were out there stoked. At this event, everyone is so happy for everyone. It’s cool to see the camaraderie. We know that if one of us is going to do well, we’re all going to rise to that.”

Nikki Hiltz is putting together one of the most impressive outdoor seasons.

Last month was an absolute triumph for Nikki, as they clinched the U.S. 1500m title, kicking to victory ahead of the likes of the 800m Olympic champion Athing Mu, U.S. Olympian Cory McGee and the reigning U.S. champion, Sinclaire Johnson. My interview with Nikki went viral after they dedicated the victory to the transgender community.

Now, Nikki is gearing up for their second career world championships. Back in 2019, in their very first season as a professional runner, they made it to the 1500m final. Since then, they've continued to progress and currently holding the U.S. titles in the indoor and outdoor 1500m, as well as the road mile.

Nikki took their momentum to Monaco, where they clocked a jaw-dropping 4:16.35, shattering Mary Slaney's American record that had stood tall since 1985. It was awesome to see so many national records fall in that race behind Faith Kipyegon’s world record.

In this conversation, we dive deep into their unforgettable performance at the U.S. Championship, that epic race in Monaco, and what they're looking forward to at the World Championships in Budapest next month.

Nikki is not only a phenomenal athlete but an incredible human being as well. Their passion and dedication shine on and off the track, making them an absolute joy to root for.

“This journey is all about the legacy I want to leave behind to motivate the young generation. It’s not all about getting the world record and we are done. I still need more to motivate the young generation to know that ‘Faith was there and she did this. She was the Olympic champion and world champion. Now she’s a record holder.’ I still need to show girls the way and all women.”

My guest for this bonus episode this week is two-time Olympic champion Faith Kipyegon. I’ve had her on the show before but I had a chance to chat with her one-on-one for a little bit on my trip to Kenya last month. This was just two weeks after she ran the world records. On June 2, she became the first woman under 3:50 for 1500m with a 3:49.11 at the Florence Diamond League. That record was a long time coming for her since she’s the undisputed greatest of all-time in the 1500m. A week later, she stunned herself running 14:05.20 to break the 5000m world record at the Paris Diamond League.

She's a big deal. If you go to Kenya, you’ll see billboards of her in Nairobi and after she broke the 1500m world record, she was swarmed by her competitors for hugs and congratulations, which just goes to show the level of respect from her peers.

When people in other sports have said that we’ve been lucky to see LeBron James or Tom Brady in their prime, track and field fans should appreciate this moment because we’re seeing one of the greatest talents ever in Faith Kipyegon and she has aspirations to run even faster.

She’s racing the mile at the Monaco Diamond League on July 21 so we’ll just wait and see if yet another record falls.

"Being injured it's so easy to think, 'This is it! This is all she wrote! That was a good run, Keira.' You can't help but let your mind go there. It was the fact that I was able to have another high and I never thought I'd get to experience anything like I experienced in Houston with that day. It felt like a once-in-a-lifetime thing that I got to experience. Part of me said, 'That might be it!' The fact that I experienced something else that was a different kind of high and win was special. That week, I doubted if I would even make it to the starting line. My daughter was having a hard time with me going so there was a lot of mom guilt going on...It was a lot of doubts and insecurities. The whole time 'hope' was a word that kept coming to mind. I hoped that I could get through it. I hoped that I would have another moment. I hoped that I could hit a big goal like that again. I was positive but you just never know if it will happen. That's where all the emotion came from."

Keira D’Amato is back on the show after breaking the American record in the half marathon. Just two weeks ago, she ran 1:06:39 at the Asics Half Marathon in Gold Coast, Australia. She took 13 seconds off the previous record held by Emily Sisson. This is getting fun because Sisson broke D’Amato’s marathon American record last fall in Chicago.

This was a big moment for D’Amato after she was forced to pull out of April’s London Marathon due to inflammation in her knee. She was back to racing in May and is now preparing to run the marathon at the World Championships in Budapest

"Last year, I can’t even begin to tell you where my head was at. I was dealing with a lot. My dad had passed away. My girlfriend had just broken up with me. We found out that we were making this move to Eugene...Finally, this year – I’m in a new situation. The training is going super well. I feel my engine is stronger than ever. This is a good time. What do I think I can do? I think the pipedream is that I can win the whole thing. But that’s not how I’m going to go in. I’m going to go in to compete, take every wave and hit every move."

My guest for today’s episode is Woody Kincaid. The former CITIUS MAG Podcaster is back after winning the U.S. 10,000 meter title for the second time in three years. He won in 28:23.01 – which was highlighted by a 54.76s for the final lap and a 26.43 for the last 200m. He finished 9th in the 5000m, which he will lend further context to. This is the first time that he joins the show since switching coaches from Jerry Schumacher and the Bowerman Track Club last year to Mike Smith.

The training group that includes World Championship 4th place finisher Luis Grijalva, as well as the newly-minted U.S. 5000m champion Abdihamid Nur and 1500m champion Nikki Hiltz, has started to go by Death Row Records. Kincaid has been on fire. During the indoor season, he broke Grant Fisher’s U.S. indoor 5000m record with a 12:51.61. He also ran 27:06.37 for the 10,000m in March. He also ran 12:54.40 while unleashing an epic 54-second final kick to move from 15th to 6th on the final lap. He’s got big aspirations for the world championships, where he will focus all of his efforts on the 10,000 meters.

"Even in the first week, it's just extremely apparent that this is the perfect environment for me. We've already done workouts that would pretty much have been impossible for me before, but I think it's just having so many World Championship Olympic quality guys in a train that I can just hop into and be a part of that just really elevates every athlete. A lot of people think you become the average of the people you spend the most time around–and these guys are just the absolute best in the world"

Charles Hicks who is coming off a runner-up finish in the 10,000 meters at the 2023 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, where he finished right behind his Stanford teammate Ky Robinson.

Last November, he made history as the first runner from Stanford University to win an NCAA individual cross country title. In his four years at Stanford, he has earned multiple All-American and Pac-12 honors and titles. In addition to all of the collegiate success, he is a two-time European under-23 cross country champion while representing Great Britain.

Now, he’s ready to open a new chapter. He has decided to forego the remainder of his NCAA eligibility to turn pro, sign with Nike and join the Bowerman Track Club under coach Jerry Schumacher.

In the latest episode of The CITIUS MAG Podcast, we discuss everything about the decision, how long he’s wanted to be a pro runner, what his hopes are for representing Team GB at global championships and the future of his YouTube channel.

"The six stars is still the dream. We’re still seeing what will happen but it’s still a dream."

It’s been two months since Eliud Kipchoge walked off Boylston Street following a sixth-place finish at the Boston Marathon. It was a bit of a shocker for him. He, entered the weekend with 15 wins in 17 marathons and looking to check off Boston from his list of the World Marathon Majors that he has yet to win. The ideal plan would have been win Boston, win New York and then focus on becoming the first man to win three Olympic gold medals in the marathon. Not everyone gets the storybook ending. The Boston victory will have to wait. Plans for the fall have yet to be announced but are expected soon.

I was invited to Kenya by the NN Running Team to get a first-hand look at how Kipchoge lives and trains in his camp in Kaptagat. I witnessed a morning workout on the track, a 40K long run, a strength session and also got to join in on an easy run. It was easy for him – not so much for me. I stayed on the heels of the greatest marathoner in the world for two miles before he took off. It was a surreal experience and I’ve been comparing it to being invited by Michael Jordan for a pickup game of basketball on his home court.

Eventually, the altitude (7800 feet above sea level), the jet lag and maybe a little lack of fitness compared to all of these pro runners led to me getting dropped. I did manage to complete the whole 10K run and while I was solo for the final two miles, I took a moment to appreciate how my career landed me in such a unique and blessed opportunity to be in Kenya among some of the best marathoners in the world.

I was fortunate to have the opportunity to catch up one-on-one with Kipchoge for a brief interview. You can catch his previous appearance on the podcast here: https://apple.co/3CNguVd

In this short chat, you’ll hear a bit more about what happened in Boston, what happens next, Faith Kipyegon’s recent success and of course – our shared love for Kelly Clarkson, who just released a new album. I made sure to let him know while I was at the camp.

"We think of ourselves as people on a journey. So when you get to your first station, that's not the end of the journey. We still have to walk some more distance. That is their mindset and it's my mindset because if I dwell on the past, then we'll end up in that station. We still have many to cover, and I’m happy that they still trust me to cover their distance and be with them."

CITIUS MAG is in Kenya. I am coming to you live from Eldoret, where I had the pleasure of being invited to visit and cover some of the behind-the-scenes of how the NN Running Team trains.

Coach Patrick Sang is 59 years old and is the man behind all of Kipchoge’s success on the track and the roads. He’s the runner who Eliud grew up admiring since Sang was a silver medalist in the steeplechase at the 1992 Olympics. He’s been coaching for more than half his life and is one of the most knowledgeable men in the sport. While he keeps it traditional and old-school in some of his approaches to training with three hard workouts a week for most of his athletes including Kipchoge, his philosophy is aimed at making his athletes well-rounded.

One of his most recent success stories has been Faith Kipyegon cementing herself as the greatest 1500m runner ever by breaking the 1500m world record in 3:49.11 at the Florence Diamond League on June 2 and then surprising herself a week later and breaking the 5000 meter world record in 14:05.20.

What you’re about to listen to is my conversation with one of the greatest minds in the sport and someone who wasn’t surprised by Faith Kipyegon. He’ll share how we got to this point, where we’re going and what brings him joy and satisfaction in the sport.

"I always define the impossible as possible. Nothing is impossible to me. I always put my mind to do impossible things."

Montverde Academy rising senior Adaejah Hodge shook the track and field world when she won the New Balance Nationals Indoor 200m title in 22.33 seconds. The performance broke the previous record of 22.97 by Bianca Knight, which stood since 2007.

Hodge also qualified for the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary later this summer, where she will represent the British Virgin Islands. She holds the BVI national records in the outdoor 100m (11.11s) and indoor 200m (22.33s).

On Memorial Day weekend, we paid a visit to Clermont, Florida to witness her work on her powerful start and smooth stride alongside coach Gerald Phiri.

The 17-year-old has tremendous potential to become one of the best sprinters in the world. Her work ethic and her personality are unmatched for someone her age.

Hodge is entered in the 100 meters, 200 meters, 4x200m relay and 4x400m relay and sprint medley relay at New Balance Nationals Outdoor from June 15-18 in Philadelphia. You will be able to watch all of the action LIVE and for FREE on the New Balance YouTube channel.

"This is a lesson to all people out there to keep the faith. Sometimes even though what you think you might want, might not be what's for you. As my mother always said to me, 'What's for you won't pass you by.' Sometimes we just need to have a little patience. And sometimes that patience can not just be weeks or months but it can be years. I've always thought I'm meant to be in the sport. I have to be in the sport. That's not being egotistical. It's good to have passionate people in this sport. That's what we need. I feel like I can bring that and I'm so grateful now that I can bring it through CITIUS."

David McCarthy is CITIUS MAG’s Europe correspondent right now. We’ve had him at On Track Nights in London and Paris. He was at the Paris and Florence Diamond League. He secured interviews with Jakob Ingebrigtsen and his father Gjert, which have taken off on our YouTube channel but you’ll also be able to listen to within this episode. His passion for track and field has made him an instant match to work with us at CITIUS.

The athletes have seemed receptive to him. The fans have enjoyed watching. I figured I’d give him a proper welcome to the team and have him share a bit of his own backstory on the podcast since you’ll be seeing and hearing much more from him on CITIUS MAG’s channels.

We're just two years into CITIUS MAG being my full-time job and it's been awesome bringing our readers, listeners, followers and supporters along for the journey since this was just a blog + space to geek out on track and field while on the side of my full-time job at Sports Illustrated. In this episode, we decide to catch people up on some of the exciting developments that we've had recently in expanding our coverage to Europe, our website and brand redesign, some of our upcoming sponsorships and partnerships with major brands around the U.S. Championships and World Athletics Championships and much more.

"A lot of people talk about how they appreciate how supportive I am of them or how they don't understand how I can look at people and I have the utmost support and faith in you because I haven't done anything to deserve that. Well, if there's one thing my dad taught me is that you can't always look at the stats or how people appear to be on the surface. Sometimes you just know if people have it in them even though they haven't shown it yet or they don't know it yet. I'm comfortable and more than willing to show love to everybody because that's one thing that he taught me and I understood how important that was for me as someone who wants to be a professional in the future and wants to change the sport."

My guest for this episode is Katelyn Hutchison. You’ve heard her on our show as a recurring analyst and I never got the chance to do a full introduction with her as a guest on the show to share some of her backstory. So we decided that one year with CITIUS MAG would be a good time to look back on her year working alongside us.

Katelyn is a sprinter at the University of Kentucky. Before that, she ran at Ithaca and she’s a champion for all things Division III. Her enthusiasm for the sport is next level. She’s harnessed that on Twitter, where she’s got very loyal followers that live for the next Katelyn interview with an athlete or her reactions to major moments.

She is an alum of the Magic Boost Program, a mentorship program for aspiring track and field content creators across videography, photography, podcasting, writing, graphic design and other modern means of storytelling. She also just got accepted as one of seven World Athletics Content Creators.

The sky is the limit for Katelyn and I’m so proud of the work she’s done with us and will continue to do with CITIUS MAG.

Eric Jenkins Retires: The Exit Interview

76 min Transcript
View

"It just felt like the right time. My body hasn’t held up to the training necessary to compete. There’s nothing I can really do about it. I’m so thankful for the career that I had. It’s led me to some of the best connections and relationships in my life. I couldn’t imagine I would’ve got this far when I started. The competitor in me believes there are things I could’ve done that I didn’t but that’s how it goes in this sport. You’re never going to be truly satisfied."

After eight years of running professionally, Eric Jenkins has retired. The announcement was made on the latest episode of The CITIUS MAG Podcast. The Portsmouth, New Hampshire native finished his career with personal bests of 3:35.94 for 1500m; 3:53.23 for the mile, 13:05.85 for 5000m and 27:22.06 for 10,000m.

He broke out as a junior at Northeastern when he ran 7:46.21 to finish second in the 3,000m at the NCAA Indoor Championships (the ninth-fastest performance in NCAA history at the time) only to be DQ’ed controversially. He went on to transfer to Oregon and finished second at the 2014 NCAA Cross Country Championships before winning two individual indoor titles at 3000m and 5000m.

Jenkins graduated and signed with Nike and spent time working under Alberto Salazar and the Nike Oregon Project, Pete Julian and the Union Athletics Club and Andy Powell. While many people within the track and field community may think of him for his reputation as a fun off-season guy or his hilarious Instagram videos, many don’t realize just how intense he was as an athlete. It showed when he finished fourth at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials, qualified for the 2017 World Championships and managed to win the Millrose Games’ Wanamaker Mile and 5th Avenue Mile.

Listen to the full conversation on The CITIUS MAG Podcast for more stories by Jenkins including being a punk in high school, deciding to take the sport seriously/breaking out at Northeastern, #FreeJenkins, landing at Oregon and winning two titles, his time at the Nike Oregon Project and what he considers his best race ever. Plus, why you may not be done hearing from him.

“Women with kids keep getting better. You become strong. It’s the opposite of what some people might think. Because sometimes people would be like, ‘if you go on maternity leave, you might be done.’ It’s becoming the opposite. If you look at Keira (D’Amato) or Aliphine (Tuliamuk), you can bounce back and do better than what you used to. Even in my 20s, I wasn’t feeling the way I feel right now, especially in the road racing.”

My guest for this episode is Betsy Saina who has re-emerged as a star in 2023 after giving birth to her son, running 2:21 at the Tokyo Marathon and just won the USATF 25K Championships this past weekend in Grand Rapids, Michigan. That marathon performance in Tokyo was It was her first marathon since giving birth to her son and her first marathon since becoming an American citizen. She's certainly someone in the conversation for one of the three spots on the line at the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials that will determine the team for the Summer Games in Paris. In our conversation, we'll touch on her road map to try and qualify for her second Games, her postpartum running experience including the challenges and triumphs in training. Betsy is an inspiration for new mothers striving to reclaim their running prowess.

Chris Chavez and Katelyn Hutchison recap their experiences and the standout performances at On Track Nights' Los Angeles stop – Sound Running's Track Fest – and the Atlanta City Games. We dive into what made the meets stand out to us, what other meets could learn from them and how they all fit into the rest of the season.

We touch on Sha'Carri Richardson winning the women's 100m at the Doha Diamond League in a world-leading 10.76. She beat Jamaica's Shericka Jackson and Great Britain's Dina Asher-Smith.

Florence Diamond League organizers announced 100m world champion Fred Kerley and 100m Olympic champion Marcell Jacobs will go head-to-head in the 100m on June 2. World championship bronze medalist Trayvon Bromell is also in the field. (A day later, Rabat Diamond League organizers also announced all three as part of their meet on May 28. The Rabat field also includes Andre De Grasse, Ferdinand Omanyala, Letsile Tebogo, Akani Simbine and Yohan Blake.)

"My advice to the younger women is: If you're passionate about this, pursue it. That's what it is. That's how it's going to change for the next generation of women to get to where I'm at now. I'm hoping that some of these younger female coaches are inspired by what we're doing at BYU and they're seeing here that she’s a mom; she's a coach; she's at a D-1, she's successful and she’s ‘kind of’ has it together, right? And hopefully, that inspires them. If she can do it, then I can do it.”

My guest for this episode is Diljeet Taylor, the head women's cross-country and distance coach at BYU. In her eight years there, Taylor has transformed the BYU women's distance running program into a national powerhouse, coaching the cross-country team to top-10 finishes at Nationals every year. They’ve been on the podium three of the last four years – including winning it all at the 2020 NCAA Cross Country Championships.

She has guided more than two dozen BYU runners to All-American honors, and several individual titles. Standout performances have become the norm. Taylor's dedication to her runners' whole lives, not just their running, is a refreshing approach to the pressure of purely results-driven programs that we see across the country.

In our conversation, we'll be discussing her approach to coaching and how she balances the various demands on her time, including being a mom and a wife. We’ll touch on her own journey to becoming a Division I coach, the challenges she's faced and the impact she's had on her athletes and what she hopes to leave behind for the sport.

“Especially this year, what I want to do is be better than last year. I feel like my mentality in the fall and winter was to run better than I did last year. Even though maybe I didn’t have the position results I wanted, I PR’ed in every single event. I’ve accomplished those goals and now for the outdoor season, I just want to win races and be one of the best in the world.”

Mario Garcia Romo is a professional middle-distance runner representing Spain and the On Athletics Club. Last year was a massive season for him. He won the NCAA indoor mile title with Ole Miss and then has a disappointing showing at the NCAA Outdoor Championships but many people forgot about it when he ended up winning the Spanish 1500m title and then finished fourth at the World Championships in the 1500m in 3:30.20. It was a big personal best and he moved from seventh to fourth in the final 100 meters. He missed that bronze medal by just three-hundredths of a second.

He went on to earn a bronze medal at the European Championships before fully joining the OAC in Boulder in the fall. This past indoor season, he broke the Spanish indoor mile record in 3:51.79 at the Millrose Games.

In this conversation, you’ll hear about his goals for the upcoming outdoor season to try and improve upon last year, being a student of the sport watching Matt Centrowitz videos to become a master tactician, his roots in Spain and much more.

"I've thought about this before, 'Am I the only pro-related person that they're following? A lot of times yeah. That's why I've recently tried to diversify who I'm posting about so I can have people liking more people other than just Leo and Lex Young. They're great but they're not the only people out there. I want to expose my followers to a lot of different sides of the sport."

I’m excited for you to listen to this chat. It’s with the one and only NoContextXCTrack. Some of you might be like “Who?” “What?” “Huh” I jokingly shot over a DM inviting them onto the podcast and they agreed to do it I granted them anonymity and put a filter over their voice so this is a fun one.

@NoContextXCTrack is an Instagram account that has blown up within the past year. They share funny photos and videos with no caption and little to no context. There are videos of Jakob Ingebrigtsen, the COFFEE CLUB guys, race fails and so much more. It’s mostly content that has been submitted by followers or things they find. It’s a fascinating account. Many of you follow them but if not, I encourage you to do so. You’ll learn all about the account, its origins, the responsibility they feel with so many followers to spread the love of track and field and much more. You’ll get some hints as to who the person is but not enough context.

"I just love marathons so much...I know that I'm gonna reach new heights every single time I do it. (With) the consistency I've had in each race and the progress that I've had, I just feel a lot of momentum, especially going into the trials. It doesn't matter what I do here (in Boston) physically on paper. Mentally, this was a big day for me just because I know that I can run with some of the best in the world – not just in the U.S. I think I'm definitely someone to contend with now and somebody to not be messed with now."

What you’re about to listen to is an episode of Dana Giordano’s “More Than Running” Podcast on The CITIUS MAG Podcast Network. She was able to rush over from our Boston Marathon watchalong and then kick it with Emma Bates just hours after she finished fifth at the 2023 Boston Marathon and clocked a personal best of 2:22:10. That was just a mere 8 seconds shy of Shalane Flanagan's American course record.

I was blown away by Emma's confident pre-race statement that she was in the shape of her life. She said she views herself as a 2:18 or 2:19 woman right now. In the race, she backed it up and was not just mere talk. She proved it on the course by hanging with some of the best marathoners in the world into the final few miles.

Emma's joyous demeanor during the race was infectious. She was waving to her friends and family members on the course. In this fantastic conversation with Dana, she discusses all of that, how she broke down the race and the significant step forward that now has her thinking of taking a shot at the American record this fall. Folks, I’m still on a high from that epic Boston Marathon. It did not disappoint.

We had a Kenyan sweep with Evans Chebet and Helen Obiri emerging as the champions of the day, stunning their competitors and fans alike with their impressive performances. It was an unforgettable day.

On this week's show, Chris Chavez, Kyle Merber and Katelyn Hutchison break down all of the U.S. sprinters who have set the tone early that 2023 is going to be a FAST one. We saw some big performances in Miramar and Baton Rouge from Sha’Carri Richardson (10.57 with a 4.1m/s wind reading) and Aleia Hobbs (10.87 with a legal 2.0m/s wind reading). 400m hurdles world championship silver medalist Rai Benjamin threw down a 44.21 for a 400m PR in California. Abby Steiner and Christian Coleman held off strong challenges from young stars to win the women's and men's 200m at the Miramar Invitational, respectfully.

Plus our Buy and Sell segment features a discussion of the Arcadia Invitational, the BAA stopping DraftKings from betting on the Boston Marathon, the marathon race walk mixed relay addition to the 2024 Paris Olympics.

"I think a lot of my running career has been running within my comfort zone...Among the lessons learned last year was that there are going to be a lot of times when we're not in control and when I'm around people who can just drop me. I just want to be able to go into those high-level meets and know that I belong there. (Millrose) gave me confidence for sure. I wouldn't say it was a bad day or a bad race by any means. I think executed the plan, I put myself in there and I just want to do that more often because I want it to stick."

Elly Henes is a professional runner for Adidas who trains in Flagstaff, Arizona under coach Mike Smith. She was a star at NC State, where she won the NCAA 5000m title in 2021. It was a beautiful moment since the victory came 30 years after her mother and coach Laurie Henes won the same title for the same school. Last year was a breakout year for Elly as a pro, which was capped by a 14:52 personal best for 5000m. She’s carried that momentum into 2023 and just ran a personal best of 30 minutes and 48 seconds for 10,000 meters, which puts her at No. 6 on the all-time list. We talk all about her rookie season, what it’s been like being coached by Mike Smith, her hopes and expectations for her sophomore season, what it was like growing up in a running family – plus: a little Taylor Swift talk.

Mark Coogan is an Olympian, the head coach of Team New Balance Boston and now he’s an author. He just published "Personal Best Running: Coach Coogan’s Strategies for the Mile to the Marathon.”

In his book, Coach Coogan shares his secrets to success, revealing the physical and psychological strategies needed to be the best athlete possible. But it's not just about the training. Coach Coogan weaves in stories from his career and also has testimonies and accounts from some of his athletes on how all the physical and psychological training comes together perfectly. You’ll read parts by Elle St. Pierre, Sam Chelanga, Abby Cooper and Alexi Pappas.

If you enjoyed our past episode with Mike Smith, the book is Mike Smith-endorsed. He said it "grants you access to the philosophy, problem-solving and insight of one of the top distance coaches in the world."

"It's the dream to become one of the greatest athletes in the world. You don't just have to show it once. You have to keep on with consistency...When you look at 2019, the number of incredible athletes was average but now this year, we have so many really good guys that if you really want to be the best and win the gold medal, then everything has to go well with you. You have to be in the right shape, the right mood and the right mindset."

My guest for this episode is Joshua Cheptegei -  the world record holder in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters + the Olympic champion at 5000m and World champion at 10,000m. He just made his mark on the streets of New York City with a runner-up performance at the NYC Half. Thanks to everyone who tuned in and caught me on the broadcast for WABC, ESPN and New York Road Runners.

In this episode, we dive deep into Cheptegei's rise into the sport and how it’s uplifted other Ugandan athletes. We discuss his motivation, drive, and determination to continuously push his limits and set new records in the sport. Cheptegei shares with us his hopes and plans for the upcoming 2023 outdoor track season, as well as his eventual move up to the marathon.

Sit back as we explore the mind of one of the greatest runners in the world right now.

On this week’s show, we’re processing all of the big things that went down at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships – including 10 collegiate records set. The CITIUS MAG team was at New Balance Nationals and got a front-row seat to meeting the rising stars of tomorrow…some of which ran record-setting times that would be competitive at the NCAA and pro levels. We pay tribute to 1968 Olympic champion Dick Fosbury, who passed away at 76 years old. And yes, we’ll briefly address Tyreek Hill running the 60m at the USATF Masters Championships.

"You don't just take fourth at the World Championships randomly. I think I can be one of the best in the world if we continue to improve here. That's what the goal has basically become. It was a dream. Now it's a goal."

Cam Levins just smashed the Canadian record in the marathon for the second year in a row, clocking in at an astounding 2:05:36 at the Tokyo Marathon. And get this - that time also breaks the North American record that has stood since 2002. But it's not just the numbers that are impressive. Cam's journey to get here is equally inspiring.

At 33 years old, Cam is still pushing himself to new limits, now under the guidance of Jim Finlayson. We explore that relationship and how they connected.

We also talk about his training regimen going back to triples and double-threshold training. We dive into his mindset, self-belief and what drives him to keep pushing himself to be the best he can be.

Also, if Cam can get into that 2:05 range, what’s it gonna take to get an American at that level? Plus, Cam shares what race he’s got coming up next.

"At the end of those two months, I interviewed (two Ethiopian female runners) each of them for an hour and a half and hired a translator. What came out of those interviews was that this was a richly complicated and complex world that I knew very little about and I had barely scratched the surface. They were talking about the relationships with their family members because I had assumed – as a lot of people do – Ethiopia has this rich history of running, therefore, it must be such a prideful thing. It actually turned out that they all said that all their family members disapproved of what they were doing. There were all these things that came up that surprised me. As I later came to learn in anthropology in grad school, you should always follow and ask questions about the things that surprise you because those are the most interesting things."

Hannah Borenstein is a good friend of mine who I've had the pleasure of getting to know as a member of The Magic Boost program that I help direct. She is an anthropologist and fellow at the University of Chicago. She's currently working on a book project focusing on women distance runners in Ethiopia. Beyond her academic work, she's also a freelance writer covering race, sports, gender, politics and labor across a variety of publications. She most recently published a story for World Athletics on Sinta Vissa, the Italian middle distance runner who was born in Ethiopia and now runs for the On Athletics Club. I've wanted to get her on the show for a while because she's passionate about telling the stories of Ethiopian athletes and has been a major resource for me in helping me understand some of the contexts around the athletes, their lives and when politics can intersect with it all.
