My guest for this episode is Ken Rideout, one of the world's fastest marathoners over the age of 50. Ken's impressive physique and relentless mindset make him stand out in the marathon world. His story is one of battling tough circumstances and overcoming addiction to become a top master athlete.  He was just featured in the Wall Street Journal last week and was a hit guest on the Rich Roll Podcast last year.

Growing up in a troubled home in a tough suburb of Boston, Ken watched his stepfather and brother go to prison. As a teen, he worked as a prison guard and vowed he wouldn't end up behind bars. However, he struggled with imposter syndrome in his finance career and turned to opioids for a time. Eventually, he turned to running as a way to cope and has become hooked on the sport.

Ken's training routine is unorthodox – you can easily see for yourself on his Strava page. His dedication to his craft has paid off, as he has won the 50-and-over division at two of the six Abbott World Marathon Majors and hopes to continue his success at the Tokyo Marathon this weekend.

Join us as we delve deeper into Ken's journey, his training routine and his mindset that has made him a champion in the marathon world.

On this week’s show, we touch on the weekend of racing at the U.S. Indoor Track and Field Championships, World Cross Country Championships. We also saw a pair of world records fall with Ryan Crouser and Femke Bol. We also discuss 100m world champion Fred Kerley leaving Nike and signing with Asics.

U.S. Indoor Championships + World Cross Country Championships

Who were the biggest winners and performers at the 2023 World Cross Country Championships in Australia and USATF Indoor Track and Field Championships in Albuquerque? We break it all down for you.

Ryan Crouser World Record

Olympic champion Ryan Crouser launched the farthest shot put throw in history. He tossed it  23.38 meters (76 feet, 8 1/2 inches) at a high school meet in Idaho. Crouser threw farther than his indoor world record from 2021 (22.82) and his outdoor world record from 2021 (23.37).

Femke Bol Indoor 400m World Record

The longest-standing track world record fell. Femke Bol broke a 41-year-old world record when she went 49.26 at the Dutch Indoor Championships. The previous record was helf by Czech Jarmila Kratochvilova‘s world record of 49.59 from March 1982. What's this mean for Sydney McLaughlin vs. Femke Bol?

Fred Kerley Signs With Asics

World champion and Olympic medallist Fred Kerley announced that he has signed with Asics. What are our impressions of the deal and Asics' foray into the sprints?

Michael Norman is the world champion at 400 meters and he just made headlines last week as he told NBC that in 2023, he will be focusing on the 100 meters. As the defending gold medalist, he’s got his spot secured for the World Championships in Budapest so I am here for his experiment. He’s run 9.86 for 100 meters, 19.70 for 200 meters and his 43.45 personal best for 400m makes him the fourth-fastest man in history. He is just 25 years old so there is tons of potential to be excited about. In this episode, I appreciated his honesty in talking about the disappointment of finishing 5th at the Tokyo Olympics, how he overcame that to win gold last year and what it’s going to take to get even faster and stay on top. Mike is a big Formula1 fan so we also had some fun talking about that, why I need him to start a podcast with Rai Benjamin and much more.

On this week’s show, we had some fast times thrown down in Lievin, France where we saw several world-leading performances and a world record. We’re going to spend much of our time previewing the USATF Indoor Championships and the World Cross Country Championships this weekend.

Lievin World Indoor Tour: Lamecha Girma broke the indoor 3000m record with a 7:23.81; Meet records fell at the hands of Karsten Warholm, Keely Hodgkinson and Femke Bol. Jakob Ingebrigtsen is paying attention to the American stars now but says, 'I'm still the best.'

USATF Indoor Championships: Many of the top stars are absent from this meet since there is no World Indoor Championships this year. Noah Lyles is still the premier star showing up for the men's 60m. Major props to the likes of Aleia Hobbs, Anna Hall, Whittni Morgan, Cole Hocker, Clayton Murphy, Bryce Hoppel and others for contesting the meet.

World Cross Country Championships: The race will be held in Mount Panorama Circuit in Australia. If you want to watch, tune in on Friday, Feb. 17, at 11:30 p.m. ET on Peacock. It’s a 2K loop. People will be running through a vineyard at times. Possibly some kangaroo sightings. Very hot conditions. Should be spicy with Joshua Cheptegei, Selemon Barega, Letesenbet Gidey and Francine Niyonsaba among the stars competing.

"It has always been an uphill battle with me for track and field but it's shown me that anything that I really want to do, I have the ability to do. From all these obstacles that I've had, I've never really seen it as an opportunity to quit this thing. A lot of people tell me, 'You've been through so much. Why don't you just hang it up? You've gone to the Olympics. You've brought home two medals. You've been top 10 all-time in your sport. You've done enough.' I'm addicted to it. Until that burning desire goes away, I'm gonna continue to run and be the fighter that I am."

English Gardner is a two-time Olympian and has two Olympic medals from the 4x100m relay including gold from the Summer Games in Rio in 2016. She has two World Championship silver medals in the relay as well. She is a two-time U.S. champion and her personal best of 10.74 puts her at No. 10 on the all-time world list and No. 5 on the all-time U.S. list for the event. The New Jersey native really popped off nationally as a star at the University of Oregon, where she won five NCAA titles. Over the past decade, she has defied the odds and fought to remain atop the sport. The journey has included injuries, COVID, depression, anxiety, homelessness as a high schooler, family cancer battles and much more. I’ve been a fan of English for years because of the beast she unleashes on the track and I’m so glad we finally got to sit down and chat for the podcast.

"Racing has always been a fun part of running for me. Focusing on that in these recent years of my running career has definitely helped."

I’ve handed off the keys to the CITIUS MAG Podcast for this episode to our newest contributor Gary Martin. If you remember, last year he broke four minutes for the mile as a senior in high school. Now, he’s a freshman at the University of Virginia and doing fantastic work. We wanted to keep following along in his career so he’ll be contributing across podcasts, videos, articles and social media.

In this episode, he hosts a chat with Christ School senior Rocky Hansen of North Carolina. He has a personal best of 4:00.76 for the mile and just won the boys' mile race at The New Balance Indoor Grand Prix. He’s entered in the B-section of the mile for the Millrose Games, where he’ll have another shot at sub-4. He’s committed to Wake Forest for next year. I thought this was a cool conversation from one former high school star to the next about how to handle the pressure that comes with being in the spotlight around such a highly regarded barrier.

This is the audio version of this weekend’s interview with Team Boss during our After The Final Lap show with special guest host Ali Feller of The Ali on The Run Show.

We were joined by Cory McGee who paced the women’s mile at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix, Aisha Praught-Leer who ran an indoor mile personal best of 4:31 earlier in the day at BU, Emma Coburn ran an indoor mile PR of 4:28 and Dani Jones who ran a 4:26 indoor mile PR. We were also treated to a rare podcast appearance by coach Joe Bosshard.

Unfortunately, we faced some audio issues and so the quality isn’t the best. We tried out best to salvage it. We’ll make sure our internet connection is stronger next time. You can also watch this interview on YouTube. For our first live show of 2023, consider this one our rust-buster.

“Wow. That would be amazing. If you would’ve asked me three years ago, I would’ve said no…I hope!” – Femke Bol on the possibility of a sub-50 second performance in the women's 400m hurdles

This is the audio version of this weekend’s interview with Femke Bol during our After The Final Lap show with special guest host Ali Feller of The Ali on The Run Show. The 22-year-old Dutch star set the first individual indoor world record at the TRACK at New Balance by going 65.63 seconds for 500 meters. That beats the fastest ever times indoors or outdoors. Femke split 51.4 through 400 meters before closing hard for the record. In this chat, we talked about that race, her thoughts on the evolution of the 400m hurdles and some other fun topics like what TV show she wants to be on after her career is over.

Unfortunately, we faced some audio issues and so there are some choppy parts with me and Kyle’s mics. Ali and Femke come through a bit clearer. We tried out best to salvage it. We’ll make sure our internet connection is stronger next time. For our first live show of 2023, consider this one our rust-buster.

"You are not inferior to your coach. You have to see yourself as equals because you're working together toward whatever goal that you're working toward."

Kristie Schofffield is the NCAA outdoor 800m champion from Boise State. She is also the newest rookie Team New Balance Boston. She had the best year of her career last year by stunning the field and kicking to the NCAA outdoor 800m title. It came just eight months after making a coaching switch and nearly taking a break from the sport. Her rise to the title was not a straightforward path, as she faced challenges and self-doubt along the way. In this episode, she talks about how she overcame that process and then pushed herself to break two minutes for the first time at the U.S. Outdoor Championships final. She will be making her professional debut this weekend when she races the 800m at the New Balance Grand Prix.

"I think we just changed it into a sprint. Before you had to pace yourself through the 400m hurdles and there was this slow build...Just to put that much speed in the beginning over the first three hurdles vs. what it used to be, we're going all out."

2016 Olympic champion, 2019 world champion, former world record holder and one of the most accomplished female 400m hurdles athletes of all time, Dalilah Muhammad joins The CITIUS MAG Podcast.

Born in Jamaica, Queens and discovered by NY Novas Track Club at the age of 4. She went on to become a World Youth Champion, NCAA All-American at USC and then pro before being the most decorated 400m hurdler in American history. She's got a world championship medal of every color after taking bronze last year in the 400m hurdles while pretty injured. We'll be discussing how she's managed her longevity to become one of the most accomplished athletes of her generation, her struggles and triumphs and her thoughts on the future of the 400m hurdles led by Sydney McLaughlin, herself and Femke Bol. Oh...also a little 800m talk?

“It’s hard to not compare yourself but so much has changed. It’s not to say that you can’t get back there – trying to take a different route may get you somewhere better. I’m focusing a lot more on the marathon going forward too. Before, I had bounced back and forth from the track to the road. I think that will maybe help us maybe maximize myself there. That’s probably the one event I probably have a PR left in. Reinventing myself a little bit by focusing on that.”

This is Molly Huddle's is her first time back on the CITIUS MAG Podcast since being guest No. 6 way back in March 2017. She recently made her postpartum return to high-level competitive racing and just finished an impressive fifth place at the Houston Half Marathon in 1:10:01 – almost nine months after welcoming her daughter. She secured her mark for the 2024 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials. Join us as we talk about her journey back to the starting line and what it takes to balance motherhood and elite running.

"We don't talk about winning national championships...What may sound close to it is – we want to execute a great team race in moments that matter. So language we're really careful about. Winning, second, third, fourth, sixth – those are outcomes. I gotta teach this stuff the years that we get 19th. The teaching is the same."

We made it happen. Today we have the pleasure of speaking with Coach Mike Smith of Northern Arizona University. With more than 20 years of coaching experience under his belt, Coach Smith has turned the Northern Arizona cross country program into a dynasty. Since joining the team in 2016, the Lumberjacks have won multiple Big Sky Conference Championships for both men and women. The men’s team has won six national titles in the past seven years. Coach Smith has been at the helm for five of those. He’s produced multiple All-Americans and Olympians. He is a five-time USTFCCCA National Men's Coach of the Year. In this chat, we'll be discussing his coaching philosophy and what he's learned on the job to create a winning culture. Enjoy!

“I think I was ready for a change and I wanted to really see where I could keep growing as an athlete...I wanted that team environment. I took a visit to the On Athletics Club in October and my gut just said, ‘This is where you need to be to be successful.’"

Josette Norris was previously a guest on this show back in October 2021 but she’s back now after signing a new contract with On and has joined the On Athletics Club. We talk about how the move came together, why she’s excited to workout with Alicia Monson and Sage Hurta and how she overcame some mental battles during last year’s outdoor season. She is making her OAC debut at the Dr. Sander Invitational on Jan. 28 and then racing the women’s Wanamaker Mile at the Millrose Games on Feb. 11.

"I want to consistently compete for podium finishes in the U.S. road racing scene. I'll probably still dabble with the track a little bit as well. I have unfinished business there. My big goals for this year are to be more consistently competitive for titles and also gain confidence going into 2024." 2022 USATF marathon champion Paige Stoner has signed a pro contract and joined HOKA NAZ Elite and is training under coach Alan Culpepper in Flagstaff, Arizona. She is coming off a victory at the California International Marathon where she took 51 seconds off the course record with a personal best of 2:26:02. The time puts her at No. 21 on the U.S. all-time list and she is just 26 years old. In this episode, we discuss why she is joining the team, what she’s most excited about and how she took a bet on herself by self-coaching herself for much of last year.

“You’re just thinking of everything to get yourself through it. I was chatting with a lot of people down there. In hearing people’s stories, you realize everyone has their own story and they have something in their past that they’re there for now. That’s when I realized when I was on the course that it was all coming to me. I never had that experience before where you’re asking for help and anything to get you going.”

My guest for this episode is former Ole Miss standout Sean Tobin who just broke the record for the fastest Antartic marathon in history. Last minth, the Irish star went down to the Earth’s southernmost continent and ran 2:53:33 to win the Antarctic Ice Marathon and broke the previous record of 2:54:54 held by USA’s Mike Wardian. It was 6.8 degrees Fahrenheit but with super tough footing. He described it as one of the toughest things he’s ever done. He’s someone whose run super well on the track including personal bests of 3:57 for the mile and 13:33 for 5K. Hear more about how he pulled this off and what it took to dig deep mentally and physically to walk away with the record.

We’re off for the holidays but we didn’t want to leave your podcast feed empty this week so here’s a recent conversation that Kyle Merber and I had with PUMA Elite’s Patrick Tiernan and Fiona O’Keeffe while at The Running Event in Austin, Texas. They’re fantastic leaders on the up and coming team based in North Carolina that is coached by Alistair and Amy Cragg. Tiernan sat down with us just two months after running 2:11:02 in his marathon debut at the Chicago Marathon. Fiona has put together a strong year that was highlighted by a 67:42 half marathon in Houston and her first national title at the U.S. 10-Mile Championships in October. She was also the top PUMA woman in their win at Sound Running’s Cross Champs, which was the day after we recorded this.

“All they threw at me was ‘impossible, impossible, impossible.’ I said, ‘OK. I accept but how are you going to do it?’ They said, ‘You don’t get it. It’s impossible.’ I said, ‘No, you don’t get it. How are you going to make it happen anyway?’ Probably from being a coach and an athlete, I can set that spark in people so that they trust me and if I really believed so much in this idea that they joined the team to make it happen.”

Olivier Bernhard is one of the founders of On Running. He’s been a runner and athlete his entire life but in 2010, he was looking to pitch several major sportswear companies on selling runners and athletes a new experience and feel while running as opposed to just another product. When he was turned away several times, he took it upon himself to create a prototype and pursue the project independently. He showed off the first Frankenstein shoe to his friends David Allemann and Caspar Coppetti and they decided to partner on starting On. The brand has since partnered with tennis legend Roger Federer and IPO’ed in September 2022 with a $6 billion valuation. I had the chance to sit down with Olivier last month and got a bit of the story of how this company came together and why they’re going to continue pushing innovation and high performance with their athletes and a major investment in running.

“Like any athlete or person, when you cross one task off your list you think, ‘I can do better.’ After CIM, I feel OK and I ran what I ran but you know what? I probably can run faster. I felt very controlled and ran a very smart, conservative race where I knew I would successfully complete this task and this mission that I’m on.”

Maegan Krifchin is a professional marathoner for the Atlanta Track Club and I decided to have her on because I needed to know more about the wild past 30 days for her. It starts on Nov. 6 with the New York City Marathon where she ran 2:40:52 in hot conditions. Two weeks later, she ran 2:31:42 to take second in the cold conditions of the Philadelphia Marathon. She capped off her year with a 2:29:21 in perfect conditions to finish 7th in a personal best at the California International Marathon, which also served as the USATF Marathon Championships. This PR was a long time coming for Maegan so I needed to hear more about her decade-long journey to this marathon threepeat.

"Looking back, I should’ve taken more time to process what had happened after the Olympics. It was such an enormously positive experience that I think it made me forget how difficult it was going into it...I do think you have to be able to take that time to figure out why you’re in this sport and why you enjoy doing this and how you’re going to take everything forward from there.

Please welcome back Molly Seidel to the CITIUS MAG Podcast. We just recorded this at The Running Event in Austin, Texas where we partnered with PUMA Running to host a group run, tape a live podcast and follow around the PUMA Elite women before they won Cross Champs. Stay tuned for more content coming from this trip. I really enjoyed this conversation with Molly as we caught up on a lot from the past year including how she handled some lows in her running due to injury and mental health struggles. She’s doing much better and I’m excited for what’s to come with her in 2023.

"It’s not chance. It’s not talent on the team. It’s what we talk about and how we train. That’s never going to change. Regardless of what athletes we have, we’re always going to be able to perform within some contained range – whether that’s winning or 5th place, it’s always going to be something that we’re proud of.”

My guest for today’s episode is Nico Young. He is a star for Northern Arizona University’s track and cross country team. He just finished second individually in the NCAA Cross Country Championships but led the Lumberjacks to their sixth national title in the last seven years. Before even arriving in Flagstaff, he was the sparkplug that kicked off Newbury Park High School’s cross country and track dominance when he ran 9:05 for 3200 meters as a sophomore and then won a bunch of state and national titles as a junior and senior. It’s been a great progression for him. He’s lowered his personal best to 13:11 for the 5000m, which puts him at No. 3 on the all-time collegiate list. He was third at the NCAA indoor and outdoor championships in the event and then took eighth at the U.S. Outdoor Championships 5000m final. All of this and he’s still just 20 years old.

We touch on a bit of his progression, how he’s handled that rise in an era of social media, what makes this NAU team special and also what it was like coming out as gay before the start of the cross country season. I appreciate Nico’s openness in this conversation and I’m looking forward to seeing how fast he goes this weekend at the BU Season Opener, where he’s the top seed in the men’s 5000m.

"The hardest part of the process was the psychological aspect, which I didn't anticipate. I really struggled with postpartum anxiety and some postpartum depression. I think we're talking about it more but it can be quite debilitating, especially when we're expected to be so happy and joyful that we have this new beautiful baby but there is another darker piece that happens for a lot of women. It's definitely something I've struggled with and I'm not totally out of the woods with it. Motherhood has really changed me – mostly for the better but there are some mental health things I really need to stay on top of now."

Chelsea Sodaro made history last month by winning the Ironman Kona World Championship women's race and becoming the first American to win in Kona since 2002 and the first American woman to win since 1996. One of the most impressive parts is that she accomplished the feat just 18 months after giving birth to her daughter Skylar. Chelsea was in 5th place going into the run before clocking a 2:51 split on the marathon run – that's after swimming 2.6 miles and biking 112 miles – to win by almost eight minutes. It's super impressive. It was so great to catch up with Chelsea, who was a pro runner when I started covering track in 2012 through her final track race at the 2016 Olympic Trials. We go deep on her journey to find her calling in triathlon, some of the highs and hardships from her pregnancy, what track and field can learn from another sport and of course that epic day in Hawaii.

The 2022 NCAA Cross Country Championships are in the books. The NAU dynasty continues on the men's side as they finished the day with 83 points tied with Oklahoma State but then won the head-to-head tiebreaker. It marked the first time that a tiebreaker determined the national champion. Stanford's Charles Hicks outkicked Nico Young in the final stretch to claim in the men's individual title. On the women's side N.C. State became the first school to go back-to-back since Villanova in 2009 and 2010. They were led by Katelyn Tuohy, who hunted down Florida's Parker Valby despite a 12-second gap and won the women's individual title. We unpack all of the action, the biggest surprises and give some way too early 2023 picks with Isaac Wood of The Wood Report and Kyle Merber.

"I'm really, really proud of this one. I feel like I executed it better than I had a marathon before. I think it was my savviest marathon...I understand I did really well and I made all the right choices. All of the measures of success I met. I don't necessarily have the joy. It's more pride right now."

Scott Fauble is back on the podcast for the 7th time, which might be a record for a recurring guest. It’s funny to go back and look at the archives because when he first came on this show in 2017, it was ahead of his marathon debut and now he’s one of the top U.S. marathoners. He just finished as the top American at the New York City Marathon in 2:13:35 to finish 9th overall. Earlier in the spring, he ran a personal best of 2:08:52 at the Boston Marathon and we did an episode after that performance. Let's unpack another top American performance.

"We wanted to do this for a long time because we knew Orlando can really produce what is needed both by the course, the staging area and the support from our running community, but also our entire community to really put forth a world-class event."

We finally have an answer on where and when the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials will be held as USATF and the USOPC announced we're headed to Orlando on Feb. 3, 2024. The trials are the event where the top three men's and women's finishers who meet the qualifying standards for the Olympics will secure their spots for the Summer Games in Paris. The race will be held in the street of downtown Orlando. I decided to give a call to Jon and Betsy Hughes of Track Shack to hear about some of the early plans since Track Shack is will be staging the event with help from the city of Orlando mayor, the Orange county mayor and the Greater Orlando Sports Commission.

NEW YORK CITY MARATHON RECAP WITH KYLE MERBER

42 min Transcript
View

On Sunday, the New York City Marathon returned to full capacity for the first time since 2019 and although the warmer conditions made it tough for runners across the board, the city was alive to celebrate everyone from the 1st to the 50,000th finisher. Kenyans swept the men’s and women’s pro races for the fourth time this year on the World Marathon Majors stage. The women’s race saw a major surprise as Sharon Lokedi, the former NCAA champion out of Kansas, won in 2:23:23 in her debut marathon. 33-year-old Evans Chebet came away with the victory in a wild and unpredictable men’s race in 2:08:41 to complete his Boston-New York title double in 2022. Aliphine Tuliamuk and Scott Fauble were the top Americans on the day. We chat through the pro races + Kyle's experience running the race + my first time on a TV broadcast.

My guest for this episode is Jos Hermens. He is the founder of Global Sports Communication and the NN Running team. We recorded this episode back in April when I made a trip to Rotterdam to host the team’s 5th anniversary. When they started in 2017, they announced themselves as “the first professional running team” with stars like Eliud Kipchoge and Kenenisa Bekele as the faces of the team. They’ve also made major strides by bringing in other major sponsors to back the team. We dive into the business side of the team, how Jos transitioned from an Olympian to an agent, what he’d like to see changed within the sport, his obsession with breaking records, stories working with Kipchoge, Bekele and Haile Gebrselassie, plus much more.

"I think she has the talent to be the best in the world in the marathon – just like she's been the best in the world in track and cross-country as well."

Last week, Mac Fleet and I traveled to Boulder, Colo. to spend some time with the On Athletics Club and coach Dathan Ritzenhein. We got a chance to sit down and chat about the highs and lows of OAC’s 2022 outdoor season + Hellen Obiri’s upcoming marathon debut in New York City on Nov. 6.

Obiri’s move to Boulder has been in the works since she signed with the Swiss sportswear company in January with the intention of focusing on the roads. Ritzenhein worked closely with her agent and former coach Ricky Simms to make the transition as smooth as possible following her 67:05 victory at The Great North Run in September. We also spoke with Obiri about her fall plans a day before she won a silver medal in the 10,000m at the World Championships in Eugene, Oregon.

You can watch this full interview with Ritzenhein uninterrupted on the CITIUS MAG YouTube channel.

What you’re about to listen to is an episode of The Coffee Club Podcast hosted by Morgan McDonald, Geordie Beamish and Olli Hoare. I’m a big fan of the show since it started. I haven’t missed an episode. Here at CITRUS MAG, we’re all about athlete storytelling and I think they do a phenomenal job of chronicling what’s going on in their respective careers while also shedding a light on some of the other things happening in the sport on a weekly basis.

I was honored to be invited on as a guest while I was in Boulder last week on a quick content trip with Mac Fleet. Stay tuned for some of the videos and interviews that we have coming on the CITIUS MAG YouTube Channel. It’s an especially exciting time for the On Athletics Club since their teammate Hellen Obiri will be making her marathon debut in New York City on Nov. 6 and we’ll be on-site to cover the elite races. Some of you may have caught my personal announcement on Instagram and Twitter but I will be on the TV broadcast on ESPN2 on race day. "I don’t think we ever planned to be a running brand but it goes back to this idea that people are complex, diverse and interesting. Brand and business should reflect that. Most businesses don’t do it that way. They’re like, ‘We do this one thing. That’s all we do. If you’re into that, you’ll get it from us. The rest of your interests, we’re not interested. Go somewhere else for your other stuff.’ … We’re more interested in the New York attitude of like you really don’t know who you’re talking to and they’re probably far more interesting than you realize.”

Brendon Babenzien is the founder of NOAH and the men’s creative director for J. Crew. A lot of you may have recently seen the collaboration between J. Crew and Tracksmith and Brendon had a lot to do with that because he’s a runner and loves the sport. But..don’t be quick to call NOAH a running brand. They make clothing for runners but with their own touch. In this one, we go into Brendon’s own running, how NOAH came to be, its place within the fashion industry and the importance of producing products with human rights and the environment in mind. Plus, NOAH just released their whole fall and winter collection so check them out. They also have been doing some runs out of their store in New York City and events in London so be sure to follow them on Instagram.

"As my idea of how those years would unfold so dramatically changed, I started to embrace this saying just for myself that it would always be a surprise ending. I was never going to be able to control exactly how I kept going. It was not the storybook ending to my track career that I imagined. But more recently, even after the whole surprise ending revelation, I decided I can make this a surprise middle. It doesn’t have to be the end...In the last few months, changing things up has been reinvigorating. It’s given me energy and it’s just a new scene."

My guest for this episode is Jenny Simpson. This is her second time on the show. Her last appearance in November 2019 is one of my all-time favorite episodes. Now she’s back and she’s repping a new sponsor. Last week, she signed a new deal with PUMA and announced that she will be shifting much of her focus to the roads. She won three World Championship medals and an Olympic bronze medal in her track career. One of the most astonishing stats is that she broke four minutes for the 1500m in 2009 and 2019, which really was a decade-long stretch as one of America’s shining middle-distance stars. We discuss all of the big changes and also discuss some of the hardships from the past two years with injuries and also being displaced from her home due to the Colorado wildfires last December. Jenny is always one of the most thoughtful people to chat with. I’m sure we could’ve kept going for hours.

"It’s been such a big goal for so long. I remember back in college, Ray (Treacy) said to me once, “You’re going to set the American record in the marathon someday.’ I was like, ‘Okay…’ But he said it as a fact like, ‘You’re going to do it.’ Just because someone has the potential doesn’t mean it necessarily will happen. There are so many factors and variables. But he was just like, ‘No. You will set it someday.’ It feels like part of a long journey."

My guest for this episode is the new American record holder in the women’s marathon – Emily Sisson. She just ran 2:18:29 to take 43 seconds off the previous record of 2:19:12 set by Keira D’Amato at the Houston Marathon in January. The race was won by Ruth Chepngetich in 2:14:18 – which is the second-fastest time in history. Sisson now owns two American records She set the half marathon record in 67:11 back in May.

We go inside the making of this American record, how she trusted her coach and pacers to make it happen, the appetite to go faster and what’s being said in this group chat with U.S. marathoning greats Keira D’Amato, Deena Kastor and Joan Benoit Samuelson.

“What I love about being out here and doing this is that I didn’t think it was accessible. I didn’t think I was going to run sub-3. Why would I think that? That’s crazy. But what I’ve been able to do is inspire people, which I wasn’t trying to do but I feel good about that. I just want us to all feel – especially Black American women – that we can do that. I started because I wanted to train and get faster. There’s nothing stopping anyone from doing that.”

My guest for this episode is Erica Stanley Dottin, who is a mother of two, a wife and runs with Black Roses NYC. She isa producer and also works as the Tracksmith New York City Community Manager. At 48 years old, she just ran 2:52:05 for a huge personal best at the Berlin Marathon. The time makes her the 25th Black American woman to break three hours in the marathon since 1973. It’s a list that started being tracked by Ted Corbitt and is now kept by his son, Gary. We discuss her running career from her sprinting days at Georgetown to what called her to the marathon. What started off as a fun hobby for herself in the mid-2000s, she eventually found the Black Roses and coach Knox Robinson in New York City which elevated her training. We talk about how she managed to do it all and the inspiration she serves to other women in her community.

“For the longest time, I thought sub-2:08 was 4:50/mile pace just because that’s what coach Eyestone said one day but he mistyped it in his text message. It’s 4:53 pace, which actually makes me feel a lot more confident in sub-2:08 because this whole time I’ve been thinking sub-4:50 per mile not even thinking that I should check his math out on my own. I think sub-2:08 is reasonable. I know my strengths are and I know where I’m good.”

Two-time NCAA cross country champion Conner Mantz is getting ready to make his marathon debut this weekend at the Chicago Marathon. In the past 12 months, he earned national titles in the half marathon and 20K. He’s got a 1 :00:55 second personal best for the half marathon, which puts him at No. 9 on the all-time U.S. list so there’s plenty of excitement over his potential in the marathon. We talked all about that, his expectations for the race, how much he wants to focus on track or cross country in the future and much more. Plus, we get some NCAA cross country predictions from him.

People seem to enjoy when we talk NCAA cross country in the past so I’m bringing back Isaac Wood, our cross country guru and the founder of The Wood Report to break down for us what we should watch for this season. If you go to TheWoodReportXC.com, you will find all of his rankings and ratings for each team. He goes through every school and every roster to project who will be competing at this year’s big dance in Stillwater, Oklahoma on Nov. 17. We’ve got an interesting season ahead with NAU going for its sixth title in seven years and NC State looking to become the first women’s team to go back-to-back in over a decade. Isaac has some bold takes on those teams and much more. I’ve transcribed some of his big takeaways so you can find those and his rankings at CITIUSMAG.com.

“I’m honestly so happy to get back to this level of running and feeling healthy running again and feeling like myself again. U.S. Champs was one of the most rewarding races of my career, honestly. With everything that I had been through the last four years, the deep, deep belief in myself never went away but there was a lot of doubt that I couldn’t get past until I finally had the race result to prove it to me. That was that race. It did a lot for my confidence for the rest of the season for sure.”

My guest for this episode is American record holder, Olympic silver medalist and world championship bronze medalist Evan Jager of the Nike Bowerman Track Club. I had him on as a guest back in 2019 as part of a panel with his teammates but this is the first time that he’s on as a guest solo. Things are much different now. He missed much of the last four years due to injury but clawed his way back in 2022 to qualify for the World Championships with a runner-up finish at the USATF Outdoor Championships in June. He made the world championship final a month later and finished sixth overall. He shares his thoughts on that performance, the season overall and what he’s learned throughout some of the lowest points in his career. We also touch on how he envisions the next two years going through the 2024 Paris Olympics if all goes well.

"That record has been the monkey on my back for a long time. I always knew that I had the capability as an athlete to get there but I often wondered if I would be able to reach my full potential and actually do it. To finally do it was special but to be able to share that moment with Sonia (O'Sullivan) was really cool."

Kyle Merber and I had a blast chatting with New Balance star Ciara Mageean. She was on a tear the past two months and won a silver medal in the 1500m at the European Championships and Commonwealth Games. She won the Brussels Diamond League women’s 1500m in 3:56.63 to smash the Irish national record. She went on to finish second in the Diamond League final behind our previous guest Faith Kipyegon. She is a 12-time Irish national champion and showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon. We touch on how she’s been able to handle the pressure of being a national star at a young age and the injuries that came along the way to finally being great. We had great craic so we hope you enjoy this episode too!

“At the moment, the 1500 meters is a competitive race. Starting this year was crazy with 3:52 and 3:50. It’s our generation now. When the upcoming generation is coming, I think it will be lowered to 3:48. Hopefully next year, I’m hoping to run 3:49 and hopefully the next generation will lower it. I think the 1500 meters is a competitive race. To go lower like 3:48 is really possible.”

Faith Kipyegon is the greatest women’s 1500 meter runner of all-time. She is a two-time Olympic champion and two-time world champion. She just won the 2022 Diamond League title and also clocked the second-fastest time in history this year with a 3:50.37 at the Monaco Diamond League – that’s three-tenths of a second shy of the world record. It’s coming. In this episode, we talk about just how much she wants it but also some of her roots in the sport, her motivation and what it means to her to show the world just how strong female athletes can come back after giving birth. I really enjoyed this chat with her and I hope this gets you to know her a little bit better.

"My goal for this sport is to be remembered as someone that gave it their all on the track and never left anything. I want to be remembered for inspiring the next generation. I want to set American records. I want to set world records and just strive for the best Abdihamid can do.”

Abdihamid Nur is a professional runner for Nike after a remarkable breakout year with Northern Arizona University. He was part of their NCAA cross country winning team but excelled on the track to the NCAA indoor 5000m and 3000m titles. He finished third in the NCAA outdoor 10,000m final but rebounded with a third-place finish at the U.S. Outdoor Championships to qualify for his first World Championship team. It marked the first time he got to rock the Team USA kit and that’s truly special since representation matters and his story begins in Somalia and makes stops along the way in Kenya and Egypt before he finally arrived in the United States as a kid. You’ll hear all about that, his incredible season and his hunger for more after finishing 11th at the World Championships. Abdihamid is truly someone you’re gonna want to support for many years to come.

"My dream to see from my country is to see, in the next five years time I hope, that my country will be able to do anything in distance running – especially in track and field and in the marathons. I really hope that the kind of light that I've put will transcend into raising many champions. I've taken the lead. My brother Jacob is also taking the lead. We believe that these young people when they continue pursuing the sport with discipline, proper guidance and listening, I believe Uganda will be somewhere up there."

Uganda’s Joshua Cheptegei is just 25 years old and he’s already an Olympic gold medalist at 5000m and Olympic silver medalist at 10,000m. He’s a three-time world champion. At this summer’s world championships, he won the 10,000 meters and finished second to Jakob Ingebrigsten in the 5000m. Oh…and he’s also the world record holder at 5000m and 10,000 meters. In addition to all of his work on the track, Joshua Cheptegei works closely with his sponsors including Nike and the NN Running Team to give back to the next generation of runners in Uganda so you’ll hear a bit about that as well in our conversation. Kyle Merber and I previously did an episode of Track Snacks where we shared out admiration for Joshua and now you can hear from him yourself.

Chris Chavez and Kyle Merber sit down with Ben Flanagan, Keira D'Amato, Marielle Hall, Colin Bennie and Patrick Tiernan after competing at the 2022 Falmouth Road Race. We were on-site to provide live updates and do our live aftershow to interview the stars of the day.

D'Amato is coming off an 8th place finish at the World Championships Marathon and decided to make her Falmouth debut in grand fashion with a 36:14 victory over the seven-mile distance. She became the first American woman to win the race since Magdalena Lewy-Boulet in 2011.

Ben Flanagan became just the fifth man in history to win three Falmouth Road Race titles with his 32:25 win over Biya Simbassa. He details how his competitors stayed on his heels, why this one was the most difficult one to win and what he hopes to accomplish with a few more road races scheduled soon.

We also speak with Marielle Hall after her third-place showing on how she's learning more about road racing. Colin Bennie shares a bit about his new coaching venture and why he's not planning to run a fall marathon. Patrick Tiernan is a week away from his wedding and in the middle of a training block before debuting at the Chicago Marathon.
