Meet 15 year-old prodigy Daniel Bissonnette. This kid first turned my head when he tagged me on Instagram sitting cross-legged and meditating in his shorts on what appeared to be a giant frozen glacier.

I looked into Daniel, and it turns out he's a pretty impressive young man.

Daniel currently listed as one of the World’s top 100 most influential Vegans, the most in demand Health/Nutrition Youth Keynote in the world, an Award-Winning Activist, Best-Selling Author, developer of the “GENIUS Mode” program and host of the weekly YouTube “Daniel Bissonnette Show.”

Daniel has delivered 100’s of presentations since the age of 9 at conferences, expos, consumer shows, community groups, food companies, schools, institutes, non-profit organizations and continues to make headlines. But, it all started out as a bullied elementary school kid who wanted to help a few friends eat healthier.

In third grade, Daniel was approached by his teacher and decided to publicly speak about his food choices. Pleasantly surprised to see how many kids began trashing their junk food and switching to healthier alternatives, Daniel was encouraged to continue spreading the message and volunteered to speak at a global rally. Little did he know that his first public talk would go viral. It became the most viewed YouTube video for the event that took place in 500 cities around the world with over 2M attendees!

From that moment on Daniel began to speak on stages of leading Health events across Canada, the US and Europe. By the age of 11 he became a Signature Speaker with the largest health show franchise in Canada and published his Best Selling book “Daniel’s BREAKFAST Burst”. With “Daniel's BREAKFAST Burst” he was able to inspire more children around the world to eat a healthier breakfast than any other authority!

“Daniel’s BREAKFAST Burst” was such a hit it was featured in popular magazines, radio, TV and even purchased by Hollywood celebrities. It sure got kids and parents excited about eating their way to smarts too with over a month of carefully designed breakfast meals that deliver peak nutrition for mental performance. By 12 years old Daniel was ranked in the World’s top 100 most Influential Vegans and joined the non-profit organization “Borneo Wildlife Preservation” to help raise funds and awareness to support reforestation and Pygmy Elephant conservation projects in Borneo. At 13 he was honored the Shining World Leadership Award for Compassion by Supreme Master Ching Hai and completed his long anticipated “Genius Mode” program.

In his “Genius Mode - The Biology of Greatness” program and "Biology Of Greatness", Daniel shares breakthrough science on a never before discussed topic - altering our DNA to Genius. “There are ways we can go into our Genetic Code and rewrite it. Genius is something you CAN Become because it’s a built-in mechanism and there’s an exact science to doing so!” says Daniel. He reveals his daily “Hacks” we can apply to increase Brain Power, Intelligence, develop Physical and Mental Resilience and turn on our GENIUS expression.

If you heard my podcast "The Ultimate Biohacked Workout & The Future Of Fitness: Minimal Effective Doses, Cold, Blood Flow Restriction, Electrical Muscle Stimulation, Ozone & More!", recorded at Systimfit in New York City, then you may have heard - towards the tail end of that podcast - how I was about to wander across to a place called La Casa to undergo a cutting-edge ozone sauna recovery treatment with something called a HOCATT.

HOCATT stands for “Hyperthermic Ozone and Carbonic Acid Transdermal Technology” and the machine acts as an ozone steam sauna, in which you sit with just their head exposed to the air, while your body receives the benefits of an infusion of ozone, carbon dioxide, steam, photon light and oxygen, all while undergoing Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy (PEMF).

While I was there, the proprietor of La Casa, Jane Goldberg, commented that she wasn't too concerned about the mild amount of ozone one might breathe in while using this device. I asked her why, and she handed me a book. The book is called The Hormesis Effect: The Miraculous Healing Power of Radioactive Stones.

Yep, I know. Woo-woo alert.

But on the plane ride home from New York, I read the book, and it was actually quite compelling. Turns out that for thousands of years people have been treating pain, injuries, and disease with low-radioactive stones.  Jane -  a New York based psychoanalyst, and holistic health consultant - and her co-author, the late Jay Gutierrez, who was a noted Native American healer and CEO of Night Hawk Minerals in Pritchett, Colorado, talk in the book about rediscovering a forgotten ancient science that was supposedly once well-known to our ancestors: the healing power of low-level radioactivity.

It also turns out that the concept of using low-dose radiation for therapeutic purposes, called in medical literature "radiation hormesis," has 100 years of solid scientific research behind it, and thousands of medical studies to support it. It is easy, affordable, and highly effective. If you're like most people, you're afraid of radiation, and all it implies. Yet, in other countries all over the world, millions of people have benefited from using low-level radiation on everything from tennis elbow, joint pain and arthritis, to far more serious illnesses such as multiple sclerosis, spinal meningitis, autism, stroke, macular degeneration, heart disease and cancer. The book discusses an inexpensive delivery system that brings this powerful, proven healing modality to all of us, within the comfort of our own homes: the concept of radiation hormesis and low-level radioactive natural stones.

So could radiation actually cause you to live longer and be healthier? That's exactly what we discuss in this podcast.

Jane G. Goldberg, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist, a certified psychoanalyst, and an oncological psychoanalyst (having worked extensively with cancer patients). She is a Stone Carrier-Medicine Woman of the Nemenhah Native American Tribe. She is one of the founding conceptualizers of the application of psychoanalysis to group therapy. She is the author of 8 books, as well as writer and creator of a holistic newsletter called Musings From 20th Street. She owns and operates two holistic centers: La Casa Spa and Wellness New York (the oldest wellness center in NYC) and La Casa Spa and Wellness Puerto Rico in the El Yunque rain forest (established in 1986). For several years, she had her own television show called The Really Real Reality Group Therapy TV Show.

She is, as well, a documentary film maker, having produced and directed Because People Are Dying, about radiation hormesis. Her latest project, about to be launched (but delayed by COVID-19) is a unique brain enhancement program called Brainercize. Accompanying the launch will be the publication of her most recent book, The Revolutionary Mind Project. Also, soon to be published is her book co-authored with Karliin Brooks on biohacking, called Biohacking WW (Women's World).

My guest on today's show, Dr. Matthew W. Johnson, Ph.D., is a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Johns Hopkins University.

He also happens to be one of the world’s most published scientists on the topic of the effects of psychedelics on humans and has conducted seminal research on the behavioral economics of drug use, addiction, and risk behavior.

The MAPS Capstone Challenge will help provide the funds—$30 million total—needed to complete the studies required for FDA approval of MDMA-assisted psychotherapy for PTSD. MAPS has already raised $10 million. If another $10 million are raised by September 10th, this will unlock a $10 million challenge pledge that Tim Ferriss has helped put together, alongside PSFC. Half of the pledge comes from the Steven & Alexandra Cohen Foundation (@cohengive), and the rest is split equally between Tim; James Bailey from Bail Capital; Peter Rahal, the founder of RXBAR (@peterrahal); Blake Mycoskie, the founder of TOMS (@blakemycoskie); and an anonymous donor.

This challenge pledge is all or nothing. If MAPS fails to raise $10 million by September 10th, they do not receive the $10 million challenge pledge. There is no partial credit, and there is a real urgency. This $10M challenge pledge was announced in Tim's recent interview with Rick Doblin, the founder of MAPS. Every dollar matters, so if the spirit moves you, please consider giving what you can by clicking here. If you can contribute $100,000 or more over two years, please get in touch with Rick and his team by emailing capstone@maps.org.

My guest on today's show, an immersive journalist and self-experimenter named Scott Carney, first joined me for the fantastic episode entitled "What Doesn’t Kill Us: Why Your Body Needs Freezing Water, Extreme Altitude & Environmental Conditioning."

Today, Scott - a New York Times Bestselling author - is back to discuss his brand new book, which I found to be a thrilling and inspirational read: "The Wedge: Evolution, Consciousness, Stress and the Key to Human Resilience."

Thrive or die: That's the rule of evolution. Despite this brutal logic, some species have learned to survive in even the most hostile conditions. Others couldn't—and perished. While incremental genetic adaptations hone the physiology of nearly every creature on this planet, there's another evolutionary force that is just as important: the power of choice. In an explosive investigation into the limits of endurance, in "The Wedge", Scott discovers how humans can wedge control over automatic physiological responses into the breaking point between stress and biology. We can reclaim our evolutionary destiny.

While writing the book, Carney submerged himself in ice water and learned breathing techniques from daredevil fitness guru Wim Hof. It gave him superhuman levels of endurance and quieted a persistent autoimmune illness. At the core of those methods is a technique called The Wedge that can give a person an edge in just about any situation.

My guests on today's show are Jim Girard and Jim Law. These two Jims are the masterminds behind something called the "BioCharger", a crazy new biohacking device I've been using for "recipes" such as sleep onset, relaxation, athletic recovery, nitric oxide production, headache clearing, "5 hour energy", immune system boosting and much more. The BioCharger utilizes four different energy types – Light, Voltage, Frequencies & Harmonics, and Pulsed Electro-Magnetic Fields (PEMFs).

Turns out Tony Robbins is a huge fan of this thing and uses it at all his events, and a host of biohackers I know seem to be incredibly excited about it and use it nearly every day, so I finally decided to try a Biocharger out for myself and interview the inventors on today's show.

I first interviewed today's guest, immersive journalist James Nestor, about "freediving" in the episode: The Extreme Sport You’ve Probably Never Heard Of, And How You Can Use Its Renegade Techniques To Become Superhuman. It was such an exciting and intriguing show that afterwards, I wound up traveling all the way to Ft. Lauderdale to take a freediving course, which absolutely changed my life (you can learn more about that in my episode with Ted Harty: The Ultimate Guide To Freediving, Legal Blood Doping, Wim Hof Breathing, Increasing Your Breathhold Time, Underwater Ear Equalizing, Spearfishing & Much More!).

Today James is back to talk about something we all do 25,000 times a day, yet most of us do it incorrectly or haven't even begun to tap into its lost art. That's right. I'm talking about your breath.

In his new book "Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art", James travels the world to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it. The answers aren’t found in pulmonology labs, as we might expect, but in the muddy digs of ancient burial sites, secret Soviet facilities, New Jersey choir schools, and the smoggy streets of São Paulo. Nestor tracks down men and women exploring the hidden science behind ancient breathing practices like Pranayama, Sudarshan Kriya, and Tummo and teams up with pulmonary tinkerers to scientifically test long-held beliefs about how we breathe.

Modern research is showing us that making even slight adjustments to the way we inhale and exhale can jump-start athletic performance; rejuvenate internal organs; halt snoring, asthma, and autoimmune disease; and even straighten scoliotic spines. None of this should be possible, and yet it is.

Drawing on thousands of years of medical texts and recent cutting-edge studies in pulmonology, psychology, biochemistry, and human physiology, James turns the conventional wisdom of what we thought we knew about our most basic biological function on its head. You will never breathe the same again after hearing this podcast.

During our discussion, you'll discover:

-The breath work protocol James uses to begin his day...7:41

-Why James views breath as the "missing pillar" of health...9:55

My guest on today's show, Robert Slovak, devoted himself to the science of water after life-altering experiences. He took his astronautical and mechanical engineering degrees and decided to pursue the research of reverse osmosis with his brother Jack. The dynamic duo were considered the early developers of Reverse Osmosis technology.

After retiring from the corporate world, Robert left for Brazil to bring advanced water technology. While working in the rainforest he became sick with gastrointestinal illness due to unsanitary eating conditions in the small village. It was then he was taken to a biologist who had given him something called "Quinton Marine Plasma" to quickly eliminate the affliction. Robert left the Brazilian biologist the following morning convinced he had uncovered one of the greatest medicines of history, an imported marine solution from Spain.

But Robert went on to do plenty more, as we discuss in our previous episode "Water & Water Filtration: Everything You Need To Know About Water Filters, Alkaline Water, Structured Water, Hydrogen-Rich Water, Deuterium-Depleted Water & Much More!". In that episode, we discussed:

-Which water filter is best?-Should you add minerals to my water?-What Robert thinks about alkaline water.-What is structured water?-Hydrogen-rich water? -Deuterium-depleted water (DDW)?-And much more...

In today's show, Robert and I decided to take a much deeper dive into hydrogen water, which I also discussed in very good detail with Tyler Lebaron of the Molecular Hydrogen Institute in the episode "The 30 Year Old Scientist Phenom Who Runs a 2:30 Marathon, Deadlifts 420 Pounds & Drinks Hydrogen Enriched Water."

Fatigue, low energy, brain fog, weight loss resistance, low libido, anxiety, sleep problems, depression, and others have become so common today that most people speak of them as just normal with age. Even thyroid dysfunction, diabetes, and other hormone-related conditions are so common they are being considered a normal part of aging. They may be common, but I can assure you they are not normal and there is, in fact, one quite potent answer...

...fasting.

Dr. Pompa is a respected leader in the health and wellness space, educating  practitioners and the public on the origins of inflammation-driven disease, the therapeutic application of the ketogenic diet, fasting, ancestral-based health approaches, cellular healing, and detoxification. Although trained as a chiropractor, his authority is rooted in his own battle, having overcome neurotoxic illness and heavy metal poisoning using his own unique cellular detoxification strategies.

His journey back to health continued to lead him to a voracious passion to research and learning beyond what is often readily understood. A relentless self-experimenter, Dr. Pompa has a passion for healing others. He’s a true warrior of a ‘from pain to purpose’ mindset, and he speaks about removing the cause of toxicity and inflammation, going upstream, and following a multi-therapeutic approach to health and healing.

Dan's new book "Beyond Fasting" (use code BEN15 for 15% off the book) will take you "beyond fasting" with its expected results for healing the body naturally by leading you into the proper preparation for a successful fast. This will ultimately result in maximum healing, as well as making the fast as easy as possible.

His seven-week protocol prepares you for the fast by getting your cells to use their own stored fat as energy (fat-adaptation). By going into the fast fat-adapted you will go "Beyond Fasting" because results start day one of the fast, and will lead you into a lifestyle that will ultimately change your life forever, as it has for thousands around the world. This book, and the podcast you're about to hear, will help to equip the body with the tools to heal and create new stem cells from day one of the fast, which generally doesn't happen until day four or five.

...it's time that changed, and my guests on today's podcast are doing just that, through their new, advanced corporate wellness program called "Live Timeless".

Alexander von Gramatzki grew up playing soccer in Europe where he had a chance to play alongside legends like Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott and Tony Kroos. During his youth soccer career he was connected to advanced wellness technologies to get him intimately attuned with his optimal state of performance. Even though Alex ended his youth soccer career to pursue education and business, his ability to find a high performing state resulted in him being able to work in a state of flow. As a result of being able to function at high levels, Alex was fortunate to find opportunities that allowed him to earn millions of dollars starting at the age of 23. Due to his achievements he was then the youngest person to be accepted into and graduate from the Wharton Schools 2-year long Executive General Management Program. His focus is now on bringing wellness technologies and health tests into the workplace so that companies can get their employees more attuned with their body and mind.

My guest on today's show, Joe Cohen of SelfHacked, first appeared on the episode

"How To Decode Your Genome, Unlock The Nitty-Gritty Details Behind Your DNA, Discover Your Good Genes, Your Bad Genes & More.", then later on

"32 Ways to Stimulate Your Vagus Nerve, Fine-Tune Your Nervous System & Self-Hack Your Hormones."

Joe Cohen won the genetic lottery of bad genes. As a kid, he suffered from inflammation, brain fog, fatigue, digestive problems, anxiety, depression, and other issues that were poorly understood in both conventional and alternative medicine.

Frustrated by the lack of good information and tools, Joe decided to embark on a journey of self-experimentation and self-learning to improve his health--something that has since become known as “biohacking”.

With thousands of experiments and Pubmed articles under his belt, Joe founded SelfHacked, the resource that was missing when he needed it. SelfHacked now gets millions of monthly readers. Joe is a thriving entrepreneur, author and speaker. He is the CEO of SelfHacked, SelfDecode and LabTestAnalyzer. His mission is to help people gain access to the most up-to-date, unbiased, and science-based ways to optimize their health. Joe has been studying health sciences for 17 years and has read over 30,000 PubMed articles.

He's given consultations to over 1000 people who have sought his health advice. After completing the pre-med requirements at university, he founded SelfHacked because he wanted to make a big impact in improving global health. He's written hundreds of science posts, multiple books on improving health, and speaks at various health conferences. He's keen on building a brain-trust of top scientists who will improve the level of accuracy of health content on the web.

He's also founded SelfDecode and LabTestAnalyzer, popular genetic and lab software tools to improve health. At SelfDecode, Joe has recently launched a longevity tool that allows you to live longer by knowing how to take actionable steps based on your genes. You can order tests here. I don't go to a regular dentist.

Matter of fact, for reasons you'll discover in this podcast episode, I wouldn't personally step foot near a "regular" dentist's office.

Instead, because I understand how profound an impact my teeth, gums, tongue and oral cavity have on my entire biological system, I only work with a holistic, biological dentist.

Due to my strong interest in this matter of dental health and holistic dentistry, I recently read a fantastic new book entitled "It's All in Your Mouth: Biological Dentistry and the Surprising Impact of Oral Health on Whole Body Wellness" written by my guest on today's show, Dr. Dominik Nischwitz.

Challenging conventional dental wisdom that views the teeth as separate from the rest of the body, and conventional dental practices that often cause more harm than good, my podcast guest today, Dr. Nischwitz himself, lays out:

-The latest research on the microbiome and the mouth -Critical information on the dangers of root canals and amalgam fillings -The important role of nutrition in oral health and hygiene -A clarion call for a new approach to dentistry -And much more.

The Power Source offers a deep understanding of how to cultivate this strength by following a holistic, multisensory program. Starting with the pelvic floor, Roxburgh focuses on the five power centers that can be harnessed throughout the body:

  • Pelvic floor
  • Deep core
  • Upper core
  • Heart and shoulders

He was sitting across from me and filled me in on some of the most advanced stem cell boosting tactics that I'd ever heard – including talking about little-known superfoods I'd never heard anyone expound upon with such knowledge.

Today, he is a renowned authority on nutrition, hydration, and the health potential of foods and herbs and he’s on a mission to help everyone learn about them and use them to feel their best.

The author of the New York Times bestselling Genius Foods: Become Smarter, Happier, and More Productive While Protecting Your Brain for Life, previous podcast guest on the episodes: The Surprising Facts About What Bread Does To Your Brain (And What You Can Do About It) and also Why A High-Fat, Ketogenic Diet Chock Full Of Saturated Fat, Coconut Oil & Butter Could Be Destroying Your Brain (& What To Do About It) is back!

His name is Max Lugavere and his new book The Genius Life: Heal Your Mind, Strengthen Your Body, and Become Extraordinary features a lifestyle program for resetting your brain and body to its “factory settings,” to help fight fatigue, anxiety, and depression and to optimize cognitive health for a longer and healthier life.

In The Genius Life, Max expands the Genius Foods plan, which focused on nutrition and how it affects brain health, and expands it to encompass a full lifestyle protocol. We know now that the health of our brains—including our cognitive function and emotional wellness—depend on the health of our gut, endocrine, cardiac and nervous systems as there is a constant feedback loop between all systems.

Drawing on globe-spanning research into circadian biology, psychology, dementia prevention, cognitive optimization, and exercise physiology, The Genius Life shows how to integrate healthy choices in all aspects of our daily routines: eating, exercising, sleeping, detoxing, and more to create a healthy foundation for optimal cognitive health and performance. Among Max’s groundbreaking findings, you will discover:

· A trick that gives you the equivalent of a “marathon” workout, in 10 minutes

· How to get the benefits of an extra 1-2 servings of veggies daily without eating them

· The hidden chemicals in your home that could be making you fat and sick

· How to boost melatonin levels by up to 58% for deeper sleep without supplements

Max is a filmmaker, health and science journalist and author. He is also the host of the #1 iTunes health podcast The Genius Life. Lugavere appears regularly on the Dr. Oz Show, the Rachael Ray Show, and The Doctors. He has contributed to Medscape, Vice, Fast Company, CNN, and the Daily Beast, has been featured on NBC Nightly News, The Today Show, and in The New York Times and People Magazine.

In last week's post entitled "Three Little Known, Unconventional Antiviral Approaches For Boosting Your Immune System", I laid out a fully comprehensive, novel, and alternative health strategy to tackle health issues related to viruses and immune system enhancement—strategies that often go beyond simple pharmaceutical pill-popping or conventional medicine (similar to my previous posts on issues I've personally dealt with in the past, such as MRSA, and Giardia).

In that article, I dove into natural ways I've been strengthening my immune system for my hefty amount of airline travel, even in the face of recent viral outbreaks that have made me have to be even more careful and thorough in my approach.

Two friends of mine, Dr. Matthew Cook and Dr. Matthew Dawson, are true experts in the realms of functional and precision medicine, and both were kind enough to offer me their advice when it comes to boosting immunity and fighting viruses. I've included their audio in this podcast for your listening and learning pleasure.

My first guest, Dr. Matthew Cook, has been on the following podcasts:

Dr. Cook founded BioReset Medical Corporation and, as acting President, operates a regenerative and pain medicine practice that offers leading-edge non-surgical solutions in orthopedic medicine, sports medicine, regenerative pain medicine, and stem cell medicine. He is a board-certified anesthesiologist with over 20 years of experience in medical practice. Currently, Dr. Cook is president of California Anesthesia and medical director of the National Surgery Center, Los Gatos, CA. In addition, he sits on the scientific advisory board of several high profile medical companies including BM Doc, FREmedica & Vasper Systems. Dr. Cook’s early career as an anesthesiologist and medical director of an outpatient surgery center that specializes in sports medicine and orthopedic procedures provided invaluable training in the skills that are needed to become a leader in the emerging fields of musculoskeletal ultrasound imaging, nerve hydrodissection, and stem cell medicine.

My second pair of guests, Dr's Matt Dawson and Michael Mallin of WildHealthMD, have been on the following podcasts:

Dr. Matt Dawson is a precision medicine physician in Lexington, KY, co-host of the Wild Health Podcast, and has been obsessed with performance optimization as long as he can remember. He received scholarships to play two sports in college even with “minimal talent” because of his voracious reading and implementation of any fitness or nutritional techniques that would give him an edge.

Dr. Dawson continued that obsession in medical school, and as a physician, he has won national awards for education, innovation, and leadership. He has lectured in over 20 countries and trained thousands of other physicians through live lectures, online education, two textbooks, and an educational app.

Dr. Dawson combines his training in genomics and functional medicine to give personalized, precise medical guidance. His obsession with performance optimization has morphed from, initially athletic, to now mental performance and longevity. Whether it's a professional athlete or a grandparent optimizing their mental clarity and mobility to keep up with their grandkids, Dr. Dawson is passionate about helping everyone perform at their absolute peak.

Dr. Mike Mallin is a physician in Bend, OR who is obsessed with health performance and precision medicine and is co-founder of the Wild Health Podcast. He completed medical school in South Carolina and trained in Emergency Medicine in Salt Lake City, UT where he competed in several ultramarathons and found his love for the mountains and performance. Mike currently practices in Bend, OR and Lexington, KY in his precision medicine clinics. He is also co-founder of the Ultrasound Podcast, an educational podcast that has taught thousands of physicians all over the world how to use ultrasound.

During this podcast, you'll discover: Part 1 w/ Dr. Matt Cook of BioReset Medical (Begins at 5:25) -Dr. Cook's history w/ virology...7:10

I recently read a book that frankly, pardon the language, pissed me off.

The book, entitled "Food Fix: How to Save Our Health, Our Economy, Our Communities, and Our Planet--One Bite at a Time" is the brand new release from Dr. Mark Hyman.

Dr. Hyman strongly believes that the most powerful tool to reverse the global epidemic of chronic disease, heal the environment, reform politics, and revive economies is food. His new book explains that we eat has tremendous implications not just for our waistlines, but also for the planet, society, and the global economy.

In Food Fix, #1 bestselling author Dr. Mark Hyman explains how our food and agriculture policies are corrupted by money and lobbies that drive our biggest global crises: the spread of obesity and food-related chronic disease, climate change, poverty, violence, educational achievement gaps, and more.

Pairing the latest developments in nutritional and environmental science with an unflinching look at the dark realities of the global food system and the policies that make it possible, Food Fix is a hard-hitting manifesto that changed the way I think about food forever, and it provides practical solutions for citizens, businesses, and policy makers to create a healthier world, society, and planet.

Dr. Hyman is a physician and New York Times best-selling author. He is the founder and medical director of The UltraWellness Center, a proponent of functional medicine and, the board president of clinical affairs of the Institute for Functional Medicine.

He's the bestselling author of multiple books, including the brand new title we discuss on this show: "Food Fix: How to Save Our Health, Our Economy, Our Communities, and Our Planet--One Bite at a Time".

During our discussion, you'll discover: -What prompted Dr. Hyman to write his new book...7:04
  • Saw many patients w/ the same condition as a result of the food they're eating
  • Food system is the main driver behind the problem
  • Food policies make up the system
  • Food industry is behind the policies; biggest lobby group in Washington is food and agriculture industries
  • A handful of companies are the leading culprits
  • $15 trillion industry; makes up ~17% of the global economy
  • Employs over 20 million workers just in the U.S.
  • The way food is produced is a major contributor to climate change
  • Children w/ healthy diets vs. children w/ unhealthy show dramatic differences in brain size and IQ
-Why the true cost of food is not what you see at the store...13:58
  • Take into account the cost of the entire life cycle of the food: production, storage, eating, waste, etc.
  • Massive environmental destruction
  • Who pays for deforestation, chemicals that destroy soil, climate change that results?
  • Methods used for modern farming are killing the soil
  • Obesity, chronic disease
  • Food stamp recipients buy processed food and soda predominantly
  • We pay for it via medicaid and medicare
  • The companies who cause the damage don't pay for their actions
  • Regenerative farming is a sustainable farming method
  • Farmland LP invests in conventional farms and converts to sustainable farms
-How food stamp programs contribute to the problem...20:33
  • Food and farm workers are not paid a livable wage; they can't afford health care and are on food stamps
  • SNAP = Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program
    • No nutrition standards for SNAP assistance
    • 70% of food purchased w/ SNAP is processed food, soda, etc.
    • It's helped w/ security, but not w/ health
  • Incentives such as lower premiums for healthy choices are more effective than penalizing unhealthy behavior
  • Even hunger advocacy organizations are opposed to changes in the program; they are funded by the food industry
  • Around 20% of Coca Cola revenue is from food stamps
  • Wal-Mart nets $137 billion per year from food stamps
-Inconvenient and invisible truths related to the food industry...28:54
  • The food system is driving most of the crises we see in the world today
-The monopoly of seeds in the food industry...34:15
  • 4-6 seed companies control 60% of the seeds
  • GMO seeds
  • Farmers are stuck in the mix (indebted to seed companies, loss of autonomy in their operations)
  • High suicide rate among Indian farmers
-What is the difference between dirt and soil, and the dangers of monocropping...36:40
  • A living organism: There is more microbial life in a handful of soil than anywhere on the planet
  • Growing plants adds carbon to the soil
  • Soil holds water (protection against drought)
  • Depleted soil results in less nutrients in the produce
  • Agro Forestry: trees as a part of the solution
-The problem of food waste...42:40
  • We waste 40% of our food in the U.S.
  • It would require an area the size of China to grow the food that is wasted
  • Environmental problems from disposed food emitting gases in landfills
  • What can you do?
    • Start a compost pile
    • Give away to farmer's market
    • Many cities have mandatory composting or giveaway to the poor
    • Unused food is being used for energy production
    • Dan Barber
-How the food industry influences food policy at the national level...48:17
  • Lobbyists are the only real influence on policy
  • 187 lobbyists per member of congress (from all industries)
  • Legislation is passed to protect big food companies from lawsuits
  • PAC's are created to protect major corporations (dark money)
-How people can proactively contribute to a solution to this problem...55:00
  • Be a "regenetarian"
    • Choose food grown organically and regeneratively
    • Have a compost pile
    • Educate your children
    • Start a community garden
    • Get into the political arena at the local level

Paul Saladino is back. The CarnivoreMD, after originally appearing on my show in the episodes...

- Everything You Need to Know About the Carnivore Diet

- Carnivore Diet, Cleaning Out Your Colon, Eating Brains, Hunting Zebras & Much More

...has just put the finishing touches on his new book The Carnivore Code, and graciously agreed to record an epic solosode for my listeners in which he delves into all the questions you asked him in the comments section after our first couple episodes together.

Prepare for a complete carnivore education, including:

-How Paul defines the carnivore diet...5:42
  • It's a diet that emphasizes and focuses on animal foods
  • The majority of our nutrients comes from animal foods
  • Aware of plant toxicity; minimal (or no) plant matter
  • The best place for vitamins and minerals is animals, with the exception of Vitamin C
  • "Nose to tail" idea
  • Most toxic plant foods:
    • Grains, legumes, nuts, seeds
    • Seeds are highly defended by the plants; high levels of toxicity
    • Most leafy greens are toxic for humans
    • High oxalate foods - almonds, root veggies
  • Moderately toxic:
    • High fructose foods: honey, berries
    • Sweet potatoes, other sweet tubers and roots
  • Least toxic:
    • Avocados, olives, squash
  • Ben's cronometer of his daily diet
  • A carnivore diet is not simply muscle meat
    • Nose to tail
    • Includes bones, marrow, cartilage
  • Carnivore diet is a "soft" keto diet
  • 1:1 ratio (1 gram of protein per pound of body weight)
-How the carnivore diet affects athletic performance...17:25 -How to get adequate iodine while on the carnivore diet...29:30
  • Redmond Sea Salt (from the ground in Utah)
    • No microplastics
    • 10 g of Redmond has 150 mcg of iodine (equivalent to the RDA)
  • Red meat
  • Egg yolks (100 mcg w/ 4 egg yolks)
  • Don't take too much iodine
-Whether the entire global population could be on a carnivore diet...32:45
  • Is the current agricultural system working?
    • Currently U.S. system is mono crop agriculture (nutrient depletion, no animals to replenish nutrients)
    • Just plants on land is "feed lot feeding" of plants
  • Regenerative agriculture (ecosystem feeding)
  • Grass feeding and finishing is the optimal situation
  • Regenerative agriculture is carbon negative
  • White Oak Pastures is a good example of regenerative agriculture
  • Multiple species on the same lot reduces parasite presence
  • The current agriculture system is unsustainable
-Why the stressor of eating plants is different from a "good" stressor like exercise...42:09
  • Plant molecules are plant pharmaceuticals
  • Plant and human biochemistry and mutually dependent
  • There is no "package insert" of side effects that comes when eating plants
  • Paul's first podcast w/ Ben talked about "collateral damage" in plants
  • Plants ameliorate symptoms, not treating the root cause
  • Glutathione levels in cold water study
  • We don't need sulforaphane to get adequate glutathione
  • If we live a "radical lifestyle" of environmental hormetics, we don't need the plant molecules
  • Studies referenced:
-How the carnivore diet activates pathways in our bodies...54:50 -Do PH levels reach acidic levels on the carnivore diet?...1:13:36 -IGF and mTOR when it comes to the carnivore diet...1:26:32 -Is the carnivore diet a concern for Alzheimers?...1:30:57 -What about doing a carnivore diet w/ FTO mutations and are an over methylator?...1:42:28
  • Saturated fats come from mislabeled trans fats or junk food
  • People who eat animal products eat more healthy saturated fats
  • Epidemiology can only produce hypotheses
  • Paul's typical daily diet:
    • 16 oz. grass fed organic steak
    • 85 g of suet mixed w/ homemade bone broth
    • 4-5 egg yolks w/ a generous serving of salt
    • For dinner: all of the above, plus liver, brain, heart, suet w/ bone broth and salt
  • There are no over or under methylators
  • Get riboflavin from organ meats and heart (need 2-3 mg per day)
-What do Paul's lab results look like?...1:50:00
  • LDL-HDL levels
  • No correlation between HDL when LDL rises and cardiovascular disease
  • The higher the LDL, the longer we live (provided we're insulin sensitive)
-Rapid fire questions...1:53:54
  • How long should you do the carnivore diet before you know of its efficacy?
    • No "cheat days" - don't reward yourself w/ bad food
    • Carnivore diet benefits is from an immunological perspective
    • Minimum 60 day reset is advocated in the book
  • Are chicken and eggs okay on the carnivore diet?
    • Info that says animal products are low in Vitamin K count only Vitamin K1; they are high in Vitamin K2
    • Eggs are fine; Paul prefers the yolks only
  • What parts of the animal should you not eat?
    • The adrenals
  • Does Paul take supplements?
    • None at the moment
  • Would a woman need time to adapt to the carnivore diet?
  • Is the carnivore diet advisable for pregnancy, breast feeding or children?
-Phospholipid forms of DHA w/ the carnivore diet...2:01:48
  • We get phospholipids from our food
  • Paul is not a fan of omega 3 supplementation (they're highly oxidized)
-Do cruciferous vegetables cause hypothyroidism?...2:05:23 -And much more! Resources from this episode:

My guest on today's show, Katie Arnold, is the author of the critically-acclaimed memoir Running Home published in 2019 by Random House, a longtime journalist, and an elite ultrarunner.

A contributing editor at Outside Magazine, she created and launched the “Raising Rippers” column on Outside Online about bringing up adventurous children.

She has written for The New York Times, Travel + Leisure, Runner’s World, ESPN: The Magazine, Elle, and many others. Her narrative nonfiction has been honored in Best American Sports Writing.

She also happens to be the 2018 Leadville Trail 100 Run champion. She lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico with her husband and two daughters.

During this discussion, you'll discover: -How Katie was able to win the Leadville Trail 100 Run on her first try...6:30
  • Very low rate of finishing in the allotted time (for safety)
  • Keys to her success:
    • Eat every 30 minutes during the race
    • 300 calories per hour at high altitude
    • Eat what they're offering
    • Coca Cola is surprisingly efficacious
    • Minimalist for hydration
  • GU Energy
  • Be in the moment, not hung up on a certain pace
    • Use a watch as a tool, not a necessity
    • Train with the metrics, let go for the race
  • "There were no low points" throughout the race
  • Music can be dangerous
-How to make training a part of your life...36:33
  • Life is Katie's "training plan"
  • It's hard to overtrain when you're a parent
  • Training concepts carry over to other aspects of your life
  • Walk the kids to school, take the long way home (4-mile walk)
  • Every moment on foot counts as exercise
  • Activities with kids
  • Don't make training separate from life
  • Avoid the car whenever possible
  • Ben walks to any place under 3 miles away
  • Blood Flow Restriction bands
-Indoor and outdoor activities for kids that strengthen the family bond...48:12
  • Indoor gyms with kids activities
  • Tag-team training is hard on a family bond
  • Always find time to be present
  • Family dinners including games, singing
  • Don't be an invisible exerciser; let the kids embrace the struggle
-What to do when your children aren't as excited about exercise as you are...54:06
  • They're trying to differentiate; but can be inspired by your dedication
  • Don't push an agenda on them
  • Katie was taught to love the outdoors as a kid
  • Running is a way to engage imagination; give kids same opportunity with whatever they like to do
  • Don't get so caught up in the "doing" that you forget about the "being"
-Why Katie chose the name "rippers" for her column...1:01:24
  • Kids who "rip" or "shred"; do something really well
  • Encourage children to take on a symbiotic relationship with the world around them
  • Exercise is viewed as a cathartic activity, not necessarily for enjoyment
  • Teach a stewardship mentality of nature, the outdoors, etc. (you can't beat the mountain)
  • Raise lifelong humans who are comfortable in their own bodies
  • Reinforce that winning the tournament isn't the ultimate success
  • Playing just one sport year-round has its hazards
-And much more... Resources from this episode:

This week, I sat slack-jawed and shocked in my bed as I read my friend Dr. Joseph Mercola's new book EMF'D: 5G, Wi-Fi & Cell Phones: Hidden Harms & How To Protect Yourself.

The hazards of electronic pollution may once have been the stuff of science fiction, but now we know they're all too real. And with the advent of 5G ultra-wideband technology, the danger is greater than ever.

The dangers of electromagnetic fields are real - and I just had to get Dr. Mercola on this podcast to talk about exactly what they are and how you can protect yourself. He's one of the world's foremost authorities on alternative health, and in this latest title, he has mined the scientific literature to offer a radical new understanding of how electromagnetic fields impact your body and mind.

In this first-of-its-kind guide, he reveals:

• What EMFs (electromagnetic fields) actually are, where you find them in your daily life, and how they affect you

• The toll that EMFs have been proven to take in conditions such as cancer, heart disease, and neuropsychiatric illnesses

• Why you've been largely kept in the dark about this threat to your health

• How you can actually repair the damage done by EMFs at a cellular level

• Practical strategies to protect yourself and your loved ones from EMFs at home, at work, and out in the world

The coming 5G technology will be pervasive and powerful. It will also be one of the largest public-health experiments in history-with no way of opting out. That's why you need to listen to. Now.

During our discussion, you'll discover:  -Why Dr. Mercola wrote this new book...7:26
  • Mitochondrial dysfunction is really one of the primary ways we age and develop chronic illness
  • Three years ago realized EMFs were one of the primary ways our mitochondria are damaged and very few people were warning the public about that
  • Written 14 books but this is my last one for 5-10 years as I have a new strategy for creating content
-Dr. Mercola's new strategy for creating content...9:22
  • Well you were a major part in that when you told me it took you three years to write you new book Boundless and it had 3000 references.
  • Another factor was conversation I had with Dave Asprey in a private party we were both at JJ Virgin at Mindshare and he recommended a book by Ryan Holiday Perennial Seller which I read and helped me understand how to write a classic book that will be read for decades requires many years to create and many many drafts of the book as the first few drafts are typically terrible.
  • So rather than write more books I am going to be writing scientific reviews for journals. It has been about twenty years since I published in the science journals and I thought I was about time to start up again
  • Especially because I have some GREAT secret sauce resources to do that and I can share with your audience
-Oh yeah? What are those resources?...12:30
  • One is my science editor, Tyler Lebaron who I introduced you to and you did podcast on molecular hydrogen. He is one of the sharpest scientists I know, humble, brilliant chemist, biochemist and knows molecular biology well and he is reviewing all the science I compile for accuracy.
  • The big one is RSS feeds (really simple syndication), which is essentially an easy way to stay up to date with your favorite websites, such as blogs or online magazines or PubMed which is really important
  • RSS feeds were how I was able to find and write about so much great content in the early days of my site. In 2005 I used an RSS reader called Google Reader but they shut it down six years ago.
  • Would not use it now though even if it was up because Google is evil on steroids.
  • Alternatives to Google
  • Meta.org RSS Feed search for PubMed lets you follow as many search terms so you don’t have to go to Pub Med every day and do individual searches for them
  • There has been a trend towards open access and now nearly 1/3 articles on PubMed are now free to read
  • If you or someone you know has academic credentials at a university you can typically get free access
  • ResearchGate.com
  • 25 page paper with 200 references on blood flow restriction (BFR).  It isn’t published yet but I can give your listeners a 25 page consumer summary with videos and if they want can send the review paper after it is published in BFR.Mercola.com
-Why does the public not accept that EMF is a serious danger to their health?...22:00
  • In 2011, the WHO labels cell phones as a class 2B carcinogen
  • 2018, NTP study shows that cell phones are clearly class I carcinogen
  • Cellphones are the cigarettes of the 21st century
    • Kills you slowly
    • Companies knew it killed customers (as do cell phone companies)
    • Same PR agencies discredit researchers (creating doubt and controversy among the public)
  • Convenient and useful
  • Invisible Captured media
  • Captured federal regulatory agencies
  • FCC started 6 BILLION dollar program to spread 5G to rural areas
  • EMF is unavoidable (unlike cigarette smoke, which you can mitigate somewhat)
-What's 5G, exactly, and why would folks want it in the first place?...32:15
  • 100X faster than 4G.  Most don’t need it now
  • Possible commercials use that need high bandwidth like self-driving cars
  • SpaceX rollout
  • There have been zero safety studies on the effects of 5G
  • AT&T
  • As we start 2020 implementation is not widespread.  Companies like AT&T lie and say it is 5G and it isn’t
  • Go to browser on phone and go to fast.com and hit enter unless > 500 megs per second it is NOT 5G
  • Fiber optic cable is the best alternative to 5G
  • It's essentially a giant public health experiment
-How to mitigate NAD damage from EMF, and how can we increase it in our bodies...47:25 -How to activate the NRF2 pathway...1:03:21 -Why magnesium is a good supplement, and the best forms to take...1:06:30 -Technologies that can repair the damage caused by EMF...1:11:36 -How to read a chapter of Dr. Mercola's book for free...1:21:15 Resources from this episode:

Katie Wells, CTNC, MCHC, Founder and CEO of WellnessMama.com and Wellnesse is my guest on today's show.

A mom of six with a background in journalism, she took health into her own hands and started researching to find answers to her health struggles. Her research turned into a blog and podcast, and she’s now written over 1,500 blog posts, three books, and was named one of the 100 most influential people in health and wellness.

When she’s not reading medical journals, creating new recipes, or recording podcasts, you can find her somewhere outside in the sun with her husband (who she met walking across the country) and kids or undertaking some DIY remodeling project. Obligatory additional unrelated randomness: doula, speed-reader, hates bananas, loves baseball, scuba-diver, INTJ, highly experienced in answering the question, “why.”

Her new company Wellnesse is her debut line of high-quality, all-natural, and clean personal care products. It is based on the DIY creations she has been making in her kitchen for years and is set to launch January 2020. Cruelty-free, GMO-free, and paraben-free are important personal care product qualities for Katie Wells, CTNC, MCHC, award-winning blogger, author, podcaster, and real-food crusader.

The first products in the Wellnesse product line include:

-Whitening Toothpaste -Cleansing Shampoo for All Hair Types -Smoothing Shampoo for All Hair Types -Nourishing Conditioner for Wavy, Curly Hair -Enriching Conditioner for Wavy, Curly Hair

Katie spent more than ten years researching the personal care market and perfecting her own recipes using safe and natural ingredients.

Unable to find commercially-available products that lived up to their clean and green labels, she developed a mission to bring simpler, safer personal care to the homes of families across the country with Wellnesse.

During our discussion, you'll discover: -Why Katie was doing a water fast at the time of recording the podcast...5:41
  • Begin w/ time-restricted eating; progress to 24-hour water fast, eventually a 10-day water fast
  • Every major religion includes fasting as part of their lifestyle
  • Katie does it for the mental benefits, more so than the physical
  • Book: Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl
  • Book: The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz
  • Benefits of water fasting:
    • Give the gut time to replenish
    • Increase autophagy in the body
    • Lowering age-related inflammation
    • Immune benefits
-How Katie has lost over 50 pounds in the last 12 months...10:10
  • Tried doing it "by the book" to no avail; saw real change when she dealt w/ the emotional elements of weight gain
  • Suffered a sexual trauma as a teenager, and did not properly address it emotionally at the time
  • Hormonal distress; sympathetic nervous system always on alert
  • Therapy that involved being picked up, learning to trust others, adrenaline shake, etc.
  • Book: The Healing Code by Alexander Loyd

I've recently become a huge fan of something called "Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy" treatment. After getting an HBOT USA softshell unit for my home (the Vitaeris 320 model), I've been in it every day for 40-60 minutes for reading or napping, and it's become a complete game changer in my personal recovery and health protocol.

You can read more in my guest's new book "Oxygen Under Pressure: Using Hyperbaric Oxygen to Restore Health, Reduce Inflammation, Reverse Aging and Revolutionize Health Care", but the benefits include:

  1. Hyperoxygenation:  The delivery of 100% oxygen under pressure (1.5 to 3 ATA) within the hyperbaric chamber provides up to 20 times normal oxygen to all tissues within the body. This oxygen supersaturation is in marked contrast to breathing room air (21% oxygen at 1 ATA).
  2. Direct Pressure to Oxygen Molecules:  Inside the hyperbaric chamber, oxygen molecules are compressed and become more soluble, obeying the scientific principles of Boyle’s Universal Gas Law. This phenomenon allows oxygen to effortlessly cross cell membranes and enter all of the body’s fluid systems, including plasma, synovial, lymphatic, interstitial (between cells) and cerebrospinal fluids. Normally, only the red blood cells are capable of transporting oxygen throughout the body. Now, all body fluids combine to provide alternate transport routes for extra oxygen and cumulatively can provide up to 20 times normal O2.
  3. Bactericidal Ammunition – Aids in Killing Bacteria: Conditions created within the hyperbaric oxygen chamber are not favorable for the viability of bacteria, fungi and viruses – organisms that cannot survive in an oxygen rich environment. Extra oxygen is provided to the white blood cells (leukocytes) which become supercharged in the battle against bacteria responsible for causing infection and illness.
  4. Angiogenesis – The Formation of New Blood Vessels:  Hyperbaric Oxygen stimulates the body to grow new capillaries (angiogenesis), essentially building a new collateral circulatory system to serve injured and healthy tissues alike. The resulting neovascularization is extremely helpful for reaching tissues and organs that have restricted blood flow (ischemic areas) as well as areas of the body that are lacking or compromised in available oxygen (hypoxic areas).
  5. Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) Stimulation – A Surge of Antioxidant Capabilities:  Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) is an important enzyme found in human cells that inactivates superoxides, the most common free radicals in the body, responsible for destruction of cells. Hyperbaric Oxygen stimulates SOD production thereby helping the body to rid itself of the byproducts of inflammation and damaging free radicals.
  6. Synergy With Antibiotics: Hyperbaric Oxygen has been proven to create a synergistic effect when administered in conjunction with certain antibiotics. Synergy can be understood as two or more agents working together to produce a result not obtainable by any of the agents independently. Administration of HBOT biomechanically potentiates the effectiveness of antibiotic therapy. The capabilities of sulfanomides are increased up to ten fold when HBOT is added. Increased oxygen levels from HBOT alone also act as antibiotics by impairing bacterial metabolism.
  7. Improves Osteoblast and Osteoclast Production:  Faster regeneration of bone is derived by hyperbaric oxygen’s ability to stimulate and increase production of specialized cells (osteoblasts and osteoclasts) responsible for bone repair and formation.
  8. Increases Fibroblast and Collagen Production: These essential building blocks of connective-tissue, tendon and skin matrix (fibroblasts and collagen) provide the structural framework throughout the body and play a critical role in wound healing. Fibroblast and collagen reproduction and growth are aided by the added availability of increased oxygen provided during hyperbaric conditions.
  9. Decreases Inflammation Inflammation, one of the most common mechanisms of disease and injury, is caused by biochemical byproducts that are manufactured by the body’s natural immune response. Hyperbaric oxygen markedly decreases inflammation by stimulating the body’s own anti-inflammatory defenses. This may be the single most important function of HBOT.

This podcast is all about HBOT.

Jason Sonners DC, DIBAK, DCBCN is owner and Clinic Director of Core Therapies Family Wellness Center, New Jersey Hyperbaric Oxygen Center, and HBOT USA Corp.

As the owner and one of the doctors at Core Therapies, Dr. Sonners primarily practices functional medicine taking on complex cases including autoimmune conditions, chronic inflammation and neurologic dysfunction and using treatment methods to help improve function and tap into the body’s innate ability to heal. He uses nutrition, detoxification, hyperbaric oxygen and herbal therapies to improve the health and quality of life for his patients.

Dr. Sonners works with families all over the country helping them find answers to their toughest health questions. As the clinical director of New Jersey HBOT and HBOT USA, Dr. Jason Sonners utilizes Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) for many of his chronic patients and helps get Hyperbaric Oxygen both into the homes of patients in need as well into the offices of doctors who want to build hyperbaric therapy clinics.

Dr. Sonners is on the faculty for the Medical Academy of Pediatric and Special Needs (MedMAPS) as well as the International Hyperbaric Association (IHA) educating other doctors on alternative and complementary treatment methods. He also guest lectures for various functional medicine conferences around the country talking about the use of nutrition, fasting, red light therapy and hyperbaric oxygen in helping the chronic illnesses plaguing our country.

During our discussion, you'll discover: -What HBOT is, and how Jason began using it...10:22
  • Herniated disk and injured foot; suffered drop foot for 18 months as a result
  • Several months of HBOT led to full recovery
  • Jason's father had amazing improvements in his MS after HBOT
  • Eventually implemented it in his clinic
  • What is HBOT?
    • Hyperbaric = increased pressure
    • Air is 21% oxygen
    • Add varying amounts of pressure and oxygen to create different "doses"
    • Used traditionally in hospitals for more severe conditions: gangrene, radiation burns, diabetic neuropathy, etc.
  • How HBOT assists w/ wound care:
    • Trauma, infection damages micro-circulation (in the capillaries)
    • Hyperbaric oxygen can get into areas of the body that are oxygen starved
    • HBOT is able to bypass the red blood cells and inject oxygen into the plasma; much more expedient delivery mechanism
-Various delivery mechanisms and how much oxygen one needs using HBOT...18:20
  • All gases move in gradient (high to low pressure)
  • A pressurized environment causes the pressure in your body to increase
  • The more pressure you're exposed to, and higher percentages of oxygen, the larger the gradient of pressure
  • Oxygen concentrator increases the amount of oxygen you're breathing in (and that's pressurized in a HBOT chamber)
  • HBOT chambers in hospitals can have 100% oxygen inside
  • 3 types of chambers:
    • Hospital grade (~$200k + cost of oxygen)
    • Hard chamber ($90-100k)
    • Home model ($15-22k)
-Actual use frequency and volume of a HBOT chamber...22:42
  • Match the right tool to your goals
  • Short-term benefits:
    • Increase in oxygenation
    • More ATP production
    • Some immune activation
  • Long-term benefits:
    • Super oxide dismutase increase
    • Body begins replicating mitochondrial content
    • Increase in stem cells
    • Rebuilding blood vessels
    • Antimicrobial benefits
  • Stem cell proliferation study
  • Front load the therapy for the most efficacy in therapy (first 3-5 months), then space it out
  • Sessions range from 60-120 minutes
  • There is a point of diminishing returns
  • Extra oxygen stimulates parasympathetic nervous system (increased relaxation)
-The effects of HBOT on aerobic or endurance activity...35:23
  • Performance enhancing effects do not come from red blood cell changes
  • Red blood cell adaptation has to do w/ hypoxia, not hyperoxia
-How HBOT promotes angiogenesis when cancer cells are present...38:04
  • BGF podcast w/ Dr. William Li
  • The understanding of the metabolism of cancer has changed in recent years
    • Cancer cells don't use oxygen to make ATP
  • Drive blood glucose levels down, oxygen levels high
  • Starve cancer cells, while nourishing healthy cells
  • Bottom line: Angiogenesis isn't the concern
-Antioxidant mechanisms affected by HBOT...42:35
  • Superoxide dismutase (SODS) upregulation is stimulated by HBOT
  • Hormesis: induce stress to the body, produce an adaptation
-The effect of HBOT on bacteria growth in the microbiome...47:11
  • Upregulation in your own immune system:
    • HBOT will affect neutrophils and macrophages
  • Used on anaerobic pathogens (serious infections)
  • Environment of high oxygen is conducive for healthy bacteria to thrive
  • Watch out for a new BGF podcast w/ Dr. Matt Cook!
-How HBOT works with bone repair and formation...51:25
  • It's all about cell signaling
  • Growth factors are the signals for healing and recovery
    • Regenerator cells
    • Platelet derived growth factors
  • Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) promotes angiogenesis
  • HBOT is one of many modalities used for healing
-Treatments that work well in conjunction w/ HBOT...57:07 -Safety concerns w/ HBOT chambers...1:01:05
  • The risk is when there's 100% oxygen, not a home chamber
  • Oxygen is not flammable, it's an accelerant
  • Pneumothorax (collapsed lung) will be problematic in a HBOT chamber
  • Don't do w/ ear pain
  • The pressure you're in is equivalent to being 10 feet under water
-How HBOT affects mental performance...1:06:10 -HBOT vs. exercise w/ oxygen therapy (EWOT)...1:07:31 -And much more... Resources from this episode:

I drink oodles of extra virgin olive oil.   Every day.   My kids and wife do too. It's a crucial staple in our diet...yet there's plenty of confusion around olive oil...   Can you cook with olive oil? How should you store olive oil? What should you look for in a good olive oil? How do you differentiate between all the different certificates and grades of olive oil?   And much more!   So in today's podcast, I interview T. J. Robinson, aka "The Olive Oil Hunter ®" who is one of the world's most respected authorities on all matters olive oil.   Known for his “platinum palate,” he is one of the few Americans invited to serve as a judge in prestigious Italian olive oil tasting competitions.   These days he is dedicated to importing rare fresh-pressed olive oil via The Fresh Pressed Olive Oil Club, the most flavorful and healthiest extra virgin olive oil on the planet, until now virtually impossible to obtain year-round in the U.S. All his oils are independently lab tested and certified for 100% purity. During our discussion, you'll discover: -What makes olive oil so efficacious to our health...5:13
  • Science database of olive oil research, including studies Ben mentions

  • Most oil in the U.S. doesn't go through this tasting panel
  • Oils labeled as extra virgin may not pass the criteria by the time it's purchased
-How you can assess (and enjoy) olive oil on your own...1:00:51
  • "Single variety" refers to one olive fruit used
  • Watch out for oils that are labeled as "blends"
  • Color of the oil isn't necessarily an indicator of its quality
  • Smell the oil
  • Swirl the cup (to release the aromas)
  • The taste test:
    • Fruitiness (flavorfulness)
    • Bitterness (high in polyphenols)
    • Spiciness
  • People are using olive oil as a tool for weight loss

Dr. David Rabin, MD, PhD is a guy who designed a fascinating wearable that he showed me a few weeks ago when he came to my house in Spokane, WA.

A board-certified psychiatrist, translational neuroscientist, and inventor specializing in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders, Dr. Rabin has spent the last 14 years researching treatments to combat the negative effects of chronic stress on physical and mental health.

He received his MD in medicine and his PhD in neuroscience from Albany Medical College and trained in psychiatry at Western Psychiatric Institute & Clinic at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Dr. Rabin helped to organize the world’s largest controlled study of psychedelic medicines in collaboration with colleagues at Yale, the University of Southern California, Mt. Sinai, Modern Spirit, and MAPS (Multidisciplinary Association of Psychedelic Studies) to determine the mechanisms of the dramatic therapeutic benefits observed following psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy in treatment-resistant mental illness. The study has begun and is collecting DNA samples from patients with treatment-resistant PTSD who are participating in the MAPS-sponsored Phase 3 FDA trial of MDMA-assisted psychotherapy to evaluate the gene expression changes that result from the therapy.

He is also the founder and executive director of the Board of Medicine, a nonprofit organization of physicians and scientists spearheading the development of the world’s first evidence-based peer-reviewed clinical guidelines for the safe use of complementary and alternative medicines including medical cannabis. Dr. Rabin works with patients with treatment-resistant conditions like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and substance use disorders. In his work, he found that when patients were in a calm, safe environment their physiological markers of stress improved, their mood got better, and they were better able to focus and manage their symptoms. He also found that mindfulness techniques and deep breathing worked quite well to reduce stress in patients, but that his patients had a difficult time practicing these techniques on their own in their day-to-day lives.

In 2014, Dr. Rabin began his research on what would become the device I'm referring to, "Apollo" in a neuroscience lab at the University of Pittsburgh.

After exploring academic research on mindfulness, biofeedback, deep breathing, and a host of sensory techniques including music therapy, Dr. Rabin found that touch is an often overlooked, but an incredibly vital pathway for quickly establishing relaxation in the mind and in the body.

He quickly got to work developing Apollo, a breakthrough wearable technology that uses the neuroscience of touch and vibration to combat the negative effects of stress during his research at the University of Pittsburgh.

Apollo sends gentle waves of vibration to your body that are clinically shown to bring your heart, lungs, and mind into balance, resulting in improved heart rate variability (HRV). By signaling safety to the body through your sense of touch, Apollo offers you control over your stress, so you can tackle whatever comes next. After clinical trials of the Apollo technology demonstrating its reliable effects on mood, sleep, and focus, Dr. Rabin co-founded Apollo Neuroscience to make the discovery available to the public.

Chronic stress tells your body that you’re under threat. These consistent disturbances put your body into fight-or-flight, making it difficult to stay calm, focus your attention, and get good sleep. Apollo’s vibrations work by signaling safety to the brain, thereby soothing the stress response and rapidly restoring balance to the body.

Apollo Neuroscience has created the first wearable system that upgrades your body instead of just tracking it. Clinical studies show that Apollo increases physical endurance, mental performance under stress, access to meditative states, and helps users reach relaxation before bed rapidly by improving heart rate variability (HRV). Apollo’s effects occur within 5 minutes of use and have no known side effects. Apollo’s AI mobile app delivers gentle layered vibration frequencies to the body via a small modular wearable worn on the ankle or wrist. Users will be able to connect Apollo’s mobile app to Apple Health Kit to see how their biometrics improve with Apollo use over time.

The Apollo system has been tested and independently validated by individual members of a number of different institutions in the military and many Veterans, several academics at Universities, >10 elite athletics clubs, as well as in two University clinical trials with 6 more trials currently underway. The Company has over 1500 beta testers and has conducted over 500 long-term case studies with consistent results. Positive symptom improvements and voluntary reductions in habit-forming substances such as opioid narcotics, benzodiazepines, amphetamines, and caffeine have been reported in those with chronic conditions worsened by stress including insomnia, chronic pain, and PTSD.

The most recently completed trial of Apollo at the University of Pittsburgh comparing EEG patterns of 25 naive meditators to 25 experienced meditators demonstrated that Apollo frequencies made naive meditators’ brainwaves look nearly identical to those of experienced meditators within 12 minutes. Apollo is currently being studied in a 100-subject PTSD trial between the University of Pittsburgh and the New School (NYC) with an FDA trial for PTSD at the Pittsburgh VA Hospital in planning for Winter 2020. All studies and trials of the Apollo technology have been supported entirely with non-dilutive funding and grants. The Apollo system has been developed to FDA ISO 13485 regulatory requirements and HIPAA Compliance.

During this discussion, you'll discover: -The link between the natural need to feel safe and stress...11:45

    • Used traditionally to release trauma
    • Are being used to reverse trauma
    • Highly efficacious while used w/ MAPS therapy on PTSD patients

Keith Norris, who first appeared on the podcast Why Strong People Are Harder To Kill (And How To Get Strong), is one of those few lucky souls who has been able to completely transition out of corporate America and dive headlong into his passion for bettering lives by teaching the art and science of physical culture. He not only “walks the walk” on a day-to-day basis, but his economic well-being hinges on his precepts of “proper exercise, stellar diet and lifestyle, and intelligent “hacks” and supplementation” forming the bedrock foundation for a long, healthy and prosperous life.

The very essence of Paleo f(x)™ is rooted in the idea of putting theory to practice; an idea that Keith is heavily invested in, having been blogging about these issues since early 2007. And his “30-thousand-foot view” for the Paleo f(x)™ enterprise serves as the movement’s guiding, north star.

And with a belief that intelligent “hacks” can help bridge the gap between our elegant evolutionary programming and sub-par environmental surroundings, Keith is continually ferreting out and backing the most promising of technological enhancements. As a founding partner of ID Life, Keith is helping to usher-in 21st century, optimal supplement dosing.

It might be said that Keith lives by the credo written by the Greek poet and soldier, Archilochus, over 2,600 years ago – “We do not rise to the level of our expectations. We fall to the level of our training”. And his vision for Paleo f(x)™ is that of a battle-tested warrior, preserving the right of everyone to fully, actively and enthusiastically engage in the human experience.

During our discussion, you'll discover: -Keith's experiences at Burning Man...

  • Played high school football in Texas
  • Blew out leg at Texas State U.; recovered fully, but lost speed and quickness
  • Studies in college led to athletic psychology
  • Served 9 years in the military, ended up working in Big Pharma
  • Became disillusioned w/ his life
  • Became an entrepreneur in the midst of the 2008 recession
  • Eventually founded Paleo FX to form community among Paleo enthusiasts
-Keith's training and diet routines...
  • High-Intensity Interval Resistance Training is the focal point
    • 6 days a week

Last year I spoke at an event called "A4M" in Las Vegas.

My entire presentation was focused on 32 different ways to increase testosterone naturally, with no injections or hormone replacement protocols required. I'm not against bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT), but I do think one should explore as many natural alternatives as possible first. Or, for even more bang for the buck, pair BHRT with the tactics you'll discover in this episode.

A4M, which stands for "The American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine" is dedicated to the advancement of tools, technology, and transformations in healthcare that can detect, treat, and prevent diseases associated with aging. They promote the research of practices and protocols that have the potential to optimize the human aging process. The organization is also dedicated to educating healthcare professionals and practitioners, scientists, and members of the public on biomedical sciences, breakthrough technologies, and medical protocols through our advanced education entity: Metabolic Medical Institute (MMI). Their event in Vegas each year is, in my opinion, well worth checking out.

Recently, in two separate papers, testosterone therapy has gotten a bad rap (Testosterone and the Cardiovascular System: A Comprehensive Review of the Clinical Literature and Age-Related Low Testosterone), and been blamed as a culprit for coronary artery disease and stroke risk, but as I discuss in my podcast with Jay Campbell, this is simply not true.

As a matter of fact, in Jay's Testosterone Optimization Bible, he clearly lays out the research behind optimized testosterone levels improving heart health, optimizing cognitive function, combatting Alzheimer's disease, staving off bone loss, and much much more.

My friend Carl Lenore also recently addressed some of this unfair testosterone vilification in Superhuman Radio episode #2451. Furthermore, as I explain in the introduction to this podcast, I recently began to use microdoses of testosterone cream (compounded by Dr. Craig Koniver) in the morning and evening to simulate the natural diurnal release of testosterone, and have noted a profound impact in my own energy levels and recovery (although this is not a strategy I endorse as a "bandaid" but instead the icing-on-the-cake for males in their late 30's and beyond once all other foundational practices I outline in this podcast are established). Incidentally, my wife is now using progesterone from Dr. Koniver for similar purposes.

In this episode, I will review the key biomarkers for achieving peak male health, along with the most potent and effective practices for optimizing biological variables for men's fertility and longevity. I will also unveil a host of little-known biohacks proven to enhance or restore peak testosterone and libido, along with how to practically implement a blend of ancestral wisdom and modern science to amplify sexual performance.

You'll discover a multimodal approach to optimizing male sexual performance, learn how to identify key biomarkers to assess male health and get the best ancient practices and modern scientific strategies that enhance or restore men's fertility and longevity.

Oh, and by the way, women need testosterone too, and all these tactics will work for the ladies as well.  In this episode, you'll learn... -Research I've encountered since I last spoke on this topic on the podcast...2:00 -Workout Strategies to Optimize Testosterone...12:43
