Listener Q&A:

As compiled, edited and sometimes read by Brock, the Ben Greenfield Fitness Podcast "sidekick".

Is It Bad To Run In Cold Weather?

Ben says:He has heard that running in the cold (below the freezing point) is bad for the joints and the knees. Is this true? He does it and it seems to be doable.

In my response I recommend: -Phenocane and Capraflex Pack How To Heal Head Injuries As Fast As Possible

Billy says:He was on a trail run when he tripped and hit his head on a rock and now he has a concussion. Do you have any advice on how to heal his head in time for a race in January?

In my response I recommend the following for fixing blood flow issues to the brain and nerve damage from head injuries:On empty stomach in morning, mid-morning or mid-afternoon: -1000mg curcumin. -300mg Alpha Lipoic Acid. -20mg Resveratrol. -600mg Acetyl-L-Carnitine. -150mcg Huperzine-A. -15mg Vinpocetine. -120mg Gingko extract. Now this is a ton of stuff and bottles/capsules/powders. So if you want to make life easy, Ben recommends you do it this way: Morning upon waking: -4 Phenocane -3 capsules Cognitex by Life Extension Mid-morning or mid-afternoon on empty stomach: -1 packet TianChi That’s it. Those three supplements (Cognitex + Phenocane + TianChi) contain everything Ben went through. Then, with your first or last meal of the day: -4g Triglyceride Based Fish Oil - best brands are Barleans, Pharmax, Green Pastures or LivingFuel SuperEssentials (Ben uses Superessentials) Then, in afternoon in glass of water: -Nascent Iodine, 6 drops. Then, in evening before bed: -Magnesium Citrate, 400-600mg. Recommend Natural Calm. Also: Avoid vegetable oils. Avoid heated seeds and nuts. Avoid grain fed meat and farmed fish. In summary, there are 6 total things you can and should use to heal nerves, shut down brain inflammation and increase brain blood flow to heal as fast as possible after concussion or head injury: Phenocane, Cognitex, TianChi, Fish Oil, Iodine and Magnesium. Alternatives To Squats

Matthew says:He is 36 and has decided to get in shape. He is trying to put on some mass but he has had multiple arthroscopies on both knees. He thinks he should probably not be doing squats but he wants to get the muscle gaining benefits of doing squats. Is there something else he can do... that won't cripple him later in life?

In my response I recommend: -Compex Electrostim Can Power, Speed or Strength Sports Build Endurance?

Nikki says:She is very excited to hear that you are focusing on Tennis more this year but she is wondering how you will go about balancing endurance training with your tennis training? She is in the same boat and finds it very time consuming to practice the mental aspect of tennis which is cutting into her triathlon training. Is there any way to overlap the training or ways to hack her mental game so it doesn't take so much time?

In my response I recommend: -The Inner Game of Tennis book How Endurance Training Can Make You Fat

Shelly says:Since starting Ironman training (8-15 hours per week) she has noticed that her body has become less defined and thicker than when she only trained for running events (5-8 hour a week). She eats paleo (with the exception of a glass or two of wine in the evening). Why is she feeling thicker and less defined when she is working out longer and harder than ever before?

In my response I recommend: -Previous episode on "Why Women Gain Weight When Training For Endurance Sports" (episode #219) -Testing with WellnessFX, DirectLabs or CuroSeven -Tri-Ripped Hemp vs. Whey Protein

Stephen says:Would like to know what the difference is between Hemp Protein vs. Whey Protein. He has been told that Hemp is better for you. Is this true? Or is Whey the way (heh) to go?

Is Joint Cracking Dangerous?

Aaron says:His wrist, fingers, knees, ankles and back (a little bit) crack. The way someones normally cracks their knuckles. Is this something he should be worried about? Is there anything he should take for it? Any diet changes? He runs (80 to 100km / week) and also does Jujitsu.

Pros And Cons Of Too Much Muscle

Horacio says:Is it possible to get strong without building big muscles? Could you explain if there is any benefit to bulking up for real sport? What are the pros and cons of big muscles? Is there an injury prevention aspect? Less potential for cramping? More endurance or power? Wouldn't all that bulk slow you down?

Do We Really Need An Appendix (And What To Do If Your Appendix Gets Removed)

John says:He had his appendix removed when he was 11 or 12 (he is 34 now). He has heard all his life that the appendix is vestigial but lately he has read that it might be more important than we once thought. Given that he lives without one, what considerations should he think about in terms of lifestyle and diet?

In my response I recommend: -This article on fermented foods -Caprobiotics Natural Remedies For Eye Circles

Kate says:Lately she wakes up feeling tired with dark puffy circles under her eyes. This just started over the last few months. She sleeps very well, is otherwise very healthy and feels really good during the day. She just hates the dark puffy circles under her eyes.

In my response I recommend: -TianChi -Making your own coffee lotion -Coffee essential oil from Mountain Rose Herbs Why Cyclists Don't Need Flexibility

Troy says:What are the best pre and post workout stretches to get maximum flexibility for cycling?

In my response I recommend: -3-4x/week of all 10 exercises in the book "Foundation".

In lieu of Ben's recent Thailand Poomergencies, which you'll learn all about in an upcoming post this Friday - and the fact that Ben is currently presenting LIVE at CreativeLIVE (click here to tune in now for free) we bring to you one of our most popular pooping episodes from the podcast archives. Enjoy!

---------------------------------------------

I have a confession: I poop once per day. One smooth, silky, glorious morning movement, and then I'm done. And I don't really think about number 2 at all until the next day. It's quite convenient, actually - especially compared to my old days of hitting the head a handful of times during the day, occasionally straining, always feeling like I had something "still inside", and having to deal with a bit of bloating to boot. Not anymore, baby.

One key to this pooping revolution is revealed in a popular article I wrote last year called "How I Ate A High Fat Diet, Pooped 8 Pounds, And Then Won A Sprint Triathlon".

In that article, I tell you about the shocking results of my switch to proper pooping mechanics (squatting to poop instead of sitting to poop), using something called a "Squatty Potty". As a matter of fact, one of these Squatty Potty devices now resides in every bathroom in my house - I own a white wooden model, a white plastic model and a quite fashionable bamboo model. The gist of that whole squatting discussion was that your body is meant to be in a squatting position to properly eliminate stuff from your colon, and when you’re sitting (as most Westerners mistakenly do), you put upward pressure on your rectum, creating a "kink" that keeps much of your poop inside (or at least makes you strain a lot harder as you try to push it out).

But when it comes to learning how to poop the right way, there are some tricks that go way above and beyond simply squatting to poop. So today, in my discussion with certified health nut and former male model Troy Casey, you're going to learn exactly what those tricks are, and ensure smooth bowel movements and banished constipation forever (and I have a hilarious video for you at the end of this post)... During my discussion with Troy (pictured right), I ask him:

-What is the best way to take a poop?

-How do minerals and hydration play a role in healthy pooping action?

-What are some ways to get you pooping if you're constipated?

-How do you "clean the poop shoot"?

-Are colonics good?

-How does what you eat affect your poop?

-What does a healthy poop look like?

-How does an impacted colon affect the whole system?

-Why is pooping properly so important for overall performance?

-Why is pooping properly so important for overall health?

It turns out even though we both squat to poop, and we both avoid intestinal irritants like wheat, soy and commercial dairy, it turns out that Troy and I actually have two different approaches when it comes to supplements or herbs for taking a good poop. Here's a synopsis of our two different approaches:

Troy's Better Pooping Regimen

1. Dr. Schultz's Intestinal Formula - Troy refers to this as "drain-o for your digestive tract". It apparently stimulates and strengthens the muscular movement of the colon. The ingredients include aloe, senna and cascara sagrada. I've personally never used it.

2. Clay - yes, literally edible earth. It is supposed to have a detoxifying effect, and is also a rich sources of minerals. And you just eat the stuff. Once again, something I haven't personally used, but Troy swears by it.

3. Fiberzon Herbal Colon Cleansers from the rainforest - OK, this one is a high fiber supplement. I tend to side with Dr. Konstantin Monastyrsky when it comes to high fiber (he wrote this article on BenGreenfieldFitness about why too much fiber is bad), and I feel the long term health effects may outweigh the short term pooping benefits. But Troy mentioned it, so I wanted to give you a link in case you want to try it!

Ben's Better Pooping Regimen

1. Colorectal Recovery Program - In the article I wrote about how to limit the damage from antibiotics, you learn how use of antibiotics can completely nuke the healthy bacterial terroir in your digestive tract. It turns out that in my fight with MRSA last year, during which I was forced into a high antibiotic dosing regimen, I did some pretty good damage to the good bacteria in my colon - to the point where I could barely even fart because there was really no bacteria "down there". I was severely constipated for weeks and I searched desperately for a solution. With just 30 days of this Colorectal Recovery Program (designed by Dr. Konstantin Monastyrsky, who wrote the article about why too much fiber is bad) I was right as rain. I don't use this stuff any more, but successfully "jump-started" my pooping system with a month of it.

2. MagO7 - This is a blend of elemental magnesium from ozonated magnesium oxides, mixed with elemental potassium. Two months ago, my friend Drew Canole told me about it, I ordered some, and it's turned out to be quite successful for my pooping experience. This stuff has a potent stool softening effect, and I've been taking 5 capsules a night with a glass of water. So that I'm no overdoing the magnesium, I have switched my normal nightly dose of Natural Calm magnesium to about half as much, only taken as pre-afternoon nap relaxation dose.

3. CapraCleanse - Even though I'm not a huge fan of the high amounts of fiber in CapraCleanse, and hence do not use it on a daily basis (click here to see why I limit high fiber supplements), this is the one supplement that I've found to make a big difference if I happen to be consuming moderately high amounts of alcohol - which typically happens to me in party situations about once every month or so. I just pop 3-4 before drinking and 3-4 after drinking, and it not only has a good liver cleansing effect, but also eliminates the inevitable constipation that can occur with high alcohol consumption (click here for more of my natural hangover cures).

Summary

Well, there you have it. Those are quite obviously two different approaches to getting stuff moving smoothly - and I'll bet both would work for you (but with all due respect to Troy, I happen to be partial to my own personal pooping approach). Ultimately, nothing beats combining "squatting to poop" with a healthy diet that eliminates common digestive irritants and unhealthy processed foods. But I'm all about better living through science too, and if you struggle with constipation, bloating, or many, many toilet trips, you may want to consider implementing the supplement advice in this article and the practical stuff in the audio too.

Have you ever wanted to be able to truly know if you're getting stronger when you train? How about how much force and power you're producing when you lift weights?

You're about to discover how.

In today's podcast, Brock(filling in for Ben Greenfield, who is off gallivanting about Thailand) interviews Matt Kuzdub, MSc CSCS and Lead Sport Scientist at "PUSH" about a product he and his team are developing, why it is an important advance in strength training methodology and the journey that got PUSH to where it is today.

In the interview, Brock and Matt talk about PUSH, how to get stronger, and important considerations including:

-If your nervous system becomes overtrained or overworked, force production at high velocity is going to decrease and you will begin to lose power. Until now, there was no way to effectively measure that.

-When Ben is training himself or working with a client, there’s currently no done-for-you, simple way to get a quick glance at true force production and strength metrics in a quantified way. But now there is.

-When you’re doing a tough strength workout, it can be very easy to hold back on strength - often because you don’t have a goal in mind or can’t measure your force production in real time. This allows you to overcome that obstacle.

-Strength, speed and power are three essential elements that Ben describes in “Beyond Training” as some of the most neglected components of many training programs. This device allows you to set goals and measure all three.

-This device has huge applications for coaches, trainers and even parents. During the workouts Ben does with his clients or kids, he could use this to track their development as they train for powerful, explosive sports like tennis, soccer, basketball, etc.

Check out the PUSH page at Indiegogo, their youtube channel and of course their own website www.pushstrength.com. And, of course, if you have any questions or comments, leave them at BenGreenfieldFitness.com.

I'll begin with a quick story - and a warning that we're about to venture into the realm of "adult" oriented topics...

...a few months ago, I sat in on an online presentation given by one of my friends, Jordan Gray.

That night, and for the week following this online presentation, I took massive action - as I usually do when I am exposed to new and exciting ideas.

I began implementing Jordan's tips - and immediately my sexual performance went through the roof. My sex drive was amplified ten-fold. I became, as Jordan might put it, a "beast" in the bedroom. It even got to the point at which my wife asked me "What happened to you?" (and this was meant in a very, very good way).

You're in luck, because today Jordan is going to share those same tips with you. I'll warn you that we really get down to brass tacks, and this is an explicit episode.

Jordan's information is probably most applicable to males - but whether you're a guy or a girl, you're going to benefit bigtime from this episode (and women - trust me - you want to send your significant others over to this episode!). Jordan is a #1 Amazon best-selling author and relationship coach who helps people remove their emotional blocks, and get into (and maintain) thriving intimate relationships. He has worked with over a thousand students over the past five years, including married couples, dating couples and single men and women...

...and as you can probably imagine, has more wedding invitations from his former clients than he can keep up with!

Jordan's books include:

-How To Be The Most Engaging Person In The Room...Every Time

-50 Powerful Date Ideas: Brag-Worthy, Cost Effective Dates From A Professional Dating Coach

-The Introvert's Guide To Dating

-Keep Her Captivated

During my chat with Jordan, we discuss:

-How to overcome the fear or nervousness of leading your partner into sex or being more "aggressive"...

-How to ensure that communication channels are 100% open in your relationship...

-Whether or not pornography can be used to enhance your sexual health...

-How to breathe the right way during sex...

-Whether you should go long periods of time without orgasm or ejaculation...

-Which time of year you have the most sexual energy...

-Special exercises you can do maximize your pelvic strength...

-What kind of workouts, stretches and exercises to do before sex...

-Relationship tips for introverted or shy people...

-And much more!

Allow me to introduce you to Katy Bowman from KatySays.com - one of the smartest cookies I know when it comes to all things related to human movement, posture and biomechanics.

She rarely uses furniture.

She has a very controversial opinion on Kegel exercises.

She is in love with something called the "psoas".

And she really, really hates high heels.

She's kind of like a female version of the Supple Leopard guy (Kelly Starrett), and her book Alignment Matters is - in my opinion - a must-read for anyone who wants to learn how to troubleshoot the human machine and resolve the deeper alignment issues affecting your health. You're going to be floored at the kind of things that can drastically affect your health - such as wax in your ears, looking at a computer screen for too long, and of course, high heels.

Through her blog, Katy Says, Katy has been educating hundreds of thousands of people about optimal alignment and natural movement since 2007. She has written several excellent and easy-to-understand books on biomechanics, including the one I just mentioned "Alignment Matters", and also "Every Woman's Guide To Foot Pain Relief". In addition to directing the Restorative Exercise Institute in Ventura, California, Katy is also the producer and talent of the Aligned and Well DVD line, a consultant for Gaiam's Restorative Exercise series, and sits on the science advisory board for various product lines.

I personally just finished Katy's newest book "Alignment Matters". It starts with the feet and works all the way up to the head in a clear, engaging writing style that lays out a veritable user's manual for the human body, including stretches, habit modifications, spiritual insights, and enough laughs to soften even the tightest psoas. In today's podcast, you're going to discover:

-Why your alignment matters...

-The extreme importance of your "psoas"...

-Why high heels are destroying you...

-Why Katy doesn't use furniture...

-Why standing can sometimes be a bad thing...

-Special socks you can wear at night to fix your feet...

-Why Kegel exercises may not be all that good after all...

-Why you shouldn't suck in your stomach...

-How your boobs can be a biofeedback device (yes, I said boobs)...

-Why you should care about your earwax...

-What the best stretching and sleeping positions are...

-How we can get our kids stronger...

-And much more!

Whether you're a couch potato or a professional athlete, you need to read "Alignment Matters". If you have questions, comments or feedback about how to fix your body, align your posture and look and feel like a million bucks from head to toe. And by the way, here's a link to The Happy Feet socks that Katy talks about!

Listener Q&A:

As compiled, edited and sometimes read by Brock, the Ben Greenfield Fitness Podcast "sidekick".

How To Build Extreme Speed

Alex says:He is currently in the military and hoping to become a police officer. Both professions require being able to go from 0 to 100 in a split second without a warmup. Is there anything he can do to prepare his body, improve his performance doing this and reduce the potential for injury?

-In my response I recommend: This article on increasing power and speed, HRV testing for deciding which days to do speed workouts, and CNS Tap Test phone app. Why Sugar Causes Heart Disease

Archie says:He has heard Ben talk about avoiding sugar if you are eating a high fat diet. Do you need to avoid eating sugar all the time or just at the same time as eating fat (eg. apples + bananas in a high fat smoothie) or is there a timing aspect to it? Can you clarify how this effects heart health?

-In my response I mention a blood glucose monitor. 5 Ways To Stay Awake Without Coffee

Becca says:She needs help staying awake. She is a 22-year-old personal trainer with an active lifestyle who struggles to stay awake while sitting still and paying attention (ie. in class, in church, driving). The rest of the day, when she is up and moving, she is fine. She sleeps well, falls asleep as soon as her head hits the pillow and sleeps through the night. She doesn't like coffee and avoids energy drinks.

-In my response I mention inverted positions, TianChi, delta-E or edible green tea, curcumin and cold showers. Is High Potassium Bad?

David says:In January he started eating Paleo/Primal and increased his fat intake. He has been testing his electrolytes since then, and has noticed his potassium levels are increasing steadily. In Jan it was 4.7, in May it was 5.6, and in Sep it was 5.8. His CO2 levels are steady at 21. He only exercises once a week (body weight work). His blood panel showed that his kidney and liver function is all ok. Should he be worried about his potassium levels? Why are they on the rise?

-In my response I mention my article on reducing stress and also Himalayan salt from Onnit. Stomach Problems During Long Runs

Derrick says: He has done some serious ultra running and using your advice from the podcast his recovery and performance has been increasing exponentially... but has noticed that during long runs (over 8 hours) his ability to ingest sugar decreases dramatically to the point that he is unable to run (ends up in a drunken waddle). He has been trying out Feed Zone Portables and chewing MAPevery 20 minutes, which has helped, but his stomach still sours. How can he increase his ability to ingest sugars and is there anything he can take to help settle his stomach during the race?

-In my response I mention: Digestive enzymes and The Endurance Pack What Are The Best Blood Sugar Controllers?

Eric says: We all know you prefer Bitter melon for blood sugar control but how do you feel about Glycosolve(Berberine HCL and Banaba Leaf Extract) that Jimmy Moore is always talking about?

-In my response I mention MPX100. How To Gain Body Fat In A Healthy Way

Greg says:He is looking for a way to increase his body fat (not necessarily his weight) in a healthy way. He is over 6 feet tall but only 53kg and 5% body fat. Is there a specific amount of calories he should eat and, perhaps more importantly, what should the percentage of fat, carbs and protein be? There are a lot of opinions out there around what percentage is appropriate especially for someone trying to gain fat.

-In my response I mention The Perfect Health Diet by Paul Jaminet. What Is The Best Kind of Electrotherapy?

Paul says:How does the ARPwave compare to the Compex Electrostim Unit? He has been using the ARPwave to cure a very tight calf muscle at a local sport clinic and it worked very quickly. Can he switch to a Compex?

-In my response I mention the Compex Sport Elite. Is DNA Testing Worth It?

Roberto (alldamnday28) says:He is wondering about the DNA testing he has been seeing commercials for on the TV (which he knows he shouldn't be watching). Is this effective? Is it worth looking into? How could this help him in the long run?

-In my response I mention 23andme.com genetic testing.

Meet Dan John, author of several bestselling books on muscle mass, strength, power and pretty much anything that has to do with making yourself strong like a bull. See that picture below? That's Dan pictured with “Judy,” - his loveable field pack with 150 pounds of rock salt.

That is what Dan calls a “Carry" - and it's just one of his underground training methods to get you to be able to build mass and get strong fast.

As you may have read in my article "Exactly How I'm Going To Pack Solid, Strong, Powerful Mass Onto My Skinny Triathlon Body This Winter" or heard in the podcast "Top Workouts To Do This Winter", I'm actually using a 12 week variation of Dan's short (and simple) mass gain e-book...

...appropriately titled "Mass Made Simple".

The Mass Made Simple Interview With Dan John

[powerpress]

During today's audio podcast with Dan, you'll find out:

-the biggest mistakes people make when trying to build mass...

-the shockingly simple but effective principles behind mass made simple...

-Why Dan preaches heavy weight, high reps for mass when so many other manuals encourage medium weight, medium reps for hypertrophy...

-Why something called a "barbell complex" is so potent and effective for strength, power and mass...

-Why squats are one of the best exercises you could ever do, and why you're probably doing them wrong...

-How a mass gain program could be used by an endurance athlete or triathlete who wants to get stronger or more powerful...

-And much more!

-----------------------------------

Additional Notes & Resources

Now I have to admit, although I'm doing Dan's entire 6 week program this winter, taking a week to recover, then doing the entire 6 week program one more time, I'm adding a few components so that I stay fit enough to throw down a triathlon at the drop of the hat.

This includes: -one added, hardcore "power swim" each weekend (40-60 minutes in the water) -one added, hardcore "Sufferfest" bike each week, along with riding my bike to the gym for each workout -two short runs, tennis or basketball games each week to maintain running speed.

And of course, my usual biohacks, including things like daily cold thermogenesis, morning Core Foundation routines, and elevation training tricks. I put my entire plan on TrainingPeaks (my software and workout logging weapon of choice) including the nutrition I'll be using, supplements, and each detailed daily workout...

...so if you care to join me on my mass-gain journey based on Dan John's principles, in which myself and everyone who joins me will be posting before/after photos on the BenGreenfieldFitness Facebook page (and getting prizes for the best mass gain results) - then simply...

...click here to grab my 100% done-for-you Simple Mass Gain Plan for Triathletes and Skinny Endurance Athletes.

In the meantime, if you have a question, comments or feedback about mass made simple or Dan John? Leave your thoughts at http://www.bengreenfieldfitness.com/?p=16405!

Listener Q&A:

As compiled, edited and sometimes read by Brock, the Ben Greenfield Fitness Podcast "sidekick".

Lanny Testimonial: He's a kinesiologist and trainer. He started running in Dec 2008 and has done Ironman 3 times now. The "Top 12 Resistance Training Routines" book has been a huge help and he considers it a must for triathletes. Being a kinesiologist himself, he loves the ease of use, the subject of periodization and is happy to add it to his repertoire for himself and his clients - great stuff!

Hidden Sources of Gluten

Gluten says:Is it possible to be gluten intolerant or sensitive to it and not know it or show symptoms?

In my response I mention: -The book "Why Isn't My Brain Working" -CyrexLabs -DDP IV enzymes for gluten -Brush Border enzymes -Flavonoids (AKA Lifeshotz) What To Do About Crunching In Your Knees

Tim says:His knees have recently stated making a "crunchy" noise in a squat, while walking up stairs or doing a lunge. Not much pain but he has noticed some swelling, stiffness and instability in his knees. Are there some supplements, exercises or therapies he should take? He runs, lifts weights and plays hockey (goalie) which means his knees are very important to him.

In my response I mention: -VMO Exercises like this -The "Foundation" Exercises -Capraflex joint formula Jessa Greenfield's top natural eczema cures

Jenny says:She has reoccurring instances of eczema around her eyes. She gets dryness and then it creates wrinkles - not good. She has gone to a dermatologist and tried creams and even low-dose cortisone (oral) and it goes away and comes back again and again. Is there something else she can try?

In my response I mention: -Autoimmune protocol -Apple Cider Vinegar -Lotion from beeswax and coconut oil (AKA Burt's Beeswax) -Probiotics -Omega 3 fatty acids (AKA fish oil) that include borage or primrose extract Is Vitamin D Toxic?

Chrissy says:She called in to the podcast about a year ago about her muscle twitches and "bubbles" in her calves. After trying to get pregnant she found out that her Vitamin D levels were low, so she started taking 50,000 IUs twice a week. Before she started taking it she was cramping, weak in the legs and stumbling during and after a race. Since she started the Vit D she feels much better, is running awesome and doesn't get any more legs cramps. Does this makes any sense?

In my response I mention: -Nutritional Adjuncts to Fat Soluble Vitamins article -The Real Food Summit -Green Pastures Fermented Cod Liver Oil -USWellnessMeats How To Know if a Supplement is Illegal

Maria says: She is interested in the TianChi product but is an elite athlete and is tested by WADA and USADA. She knows the ingredients aren't banned by WADA but could there be cross-contamination? Is this something she needs to worry about?

In my response I mention: -GlobalDro.com Natural remedies for sports hernia

Edward says:He has a sports hernia (Athletic Pubalgia) and doesn't want to have surgery. He has had some success rehabbing himself (feels like he is back to 70%) but would like some guidance on using a combination of physical therapy, modality and exercise. Do you have any suggestions?

In my response I mention: -Run With No Pain book

Prepare to have your mind blown as today's audio podcast with Dr. Dominic D' Agostino takes a deep dive into ketosis - showing you how navy seals, extreme athletes and even busy executives can enhance physical and mental performance by using the secret weapon of ketones.

During this interview with Dr. D' Agostino, you're going to discover...

-Why extreme Navy Seals are using ketosis...

-Can you get into ketosis by eating ketones (and still consuming high amounts of carbohydrates) instead of eating a high fat, low carb diet?

-How ketosis can be used to control diseases such as cancer, Alzheimers, ALS...

-The mechanism by which ketones can "juice up your brain"...

-How ketosis can enhance blood vessel dilation and wound healing...

-Whether the consumption of ketones is actually safe...

-How to improve your oxygen efficiency with ketone intake...

-Why ketones can be used to enhance mental performance and not just exercise function...

-Practical ways you can use keto salts and ketones to enhance physical performance...

-And much more!

Dr. Dominic D’Agostino, PhD (pictured right) is an assistant professor at the University of South Florida College of Medicine. He teaches courses in molecular pharmacology and physiology, and maintains involvement in several studies researching metabolic treatments for neurological disorders such as seizures, Alzheimer’s, ALS, and cancer—all of which are metabolically linked. His entry in to this field began when, in 2007, the Office of Naval Research funded his study into seizures related to oxygen toxicity experienced by Navy SEAL divers using closed-circuit breathing apparatus. At this juncture, he came across the ketogenic diet, which has already been confirmed as an effective treatment for epilepsy and a variety of seizure disorders. He is now studying how this same ketogenic diet and the use of ketones can be used to enhance physical and mental performance.

Scott Hanley Suggestions on best way to heal a strained calf two weeks out from a 70.3? I have access to a sauna, high elevation river and natural hot springs.

Shelley Walton What did your weight training program consist of? How many hours per week did you weight train and how much time did you allocate to each session?

Jared Green I'm interested in someday doing a full Ironman, thus far have only done a sprint tri. Should I try doing run only races, like half/full marathons, or open water swims, etc before training for all three at once?

Brandon Lawrence On thermogenesis... Since you went from a sauna to a cooler area I would Assume that a bigger temp difference had better effects, say a hot/cold shower vs. a warm/cold shower. Am I correct? Also, what is your reason for using cold adaption as you don't seem to have much fat to lose.

Eduardo R. Lorenzana Congrats on Kona!! Will you be putting out a soup to nuts outline of your plan? Week by week, nutrition, exercises, etc?

Christopher Allen Congrats on Kona!!! With a change to a high-fat diet, did you have before and after blood work completed to see if there were and positive or negative affects? I ask because I was on statins before and am afraid to go high-fat and have my cholesterol and triglyceride number go up.

Kyle Parzich Do you think you could have seen noticeable improvement by adding just 1-2 extra longer sessions a week on top of the minimalist training you did? Also since you raced a late season IM to qualify, do you think you would have performed better at Kona if you qualified at, say IM Texas?

Damien Teney Among all of the unconventional training techniques you used, which one do you think had the most (positive) impact on your performance ? Hard to know without repeating the experience many times, but I'm sure you can make some guesses!

Kevin Gossett Any ideas or resources for maximizing swim training in an Endless Pool? I don't have the same feeling that I have in a lap pool.

Paul Carroll I take it your 8-9 hrs training didn't include weight training?

Kevin Gossett How far out from Ironman did you start the sauna/cold thermogenesis? Did you add the sauna because of Kona's hot conditions? I know you're a component of cold thermogenesis but not sure if you regularly include a sauna protocol. I'm assuming most of your training was interval/intensity based.

Darcie Gurley What did you eat/drink the day of the race? How did you feel? And are you going to be going ketogenic for your next one?

Thomas Howell Your minimalist training methods and hack combos helped you with your under 10hr finish. What do you think you could have changed as far as training and recovery/supps to place higher? Do you feel you would have placed higher with a larger training volume?

Ahmad Fahmy What are some of the negatives of a ketogenic diet?

Eric LafontaineWhat is the long term effect of such approach? Noticed from your results after canada hormones where a little off.. I can see performance benefit, what about health. The long ride.

Listener Q&A:

As compiled, edited and sometimes read by Brock, the Ben Greenfield Fitness Podcast "sidekick".

Testimonial from Rayne @ 00:26:10I had a break through and wanted to say thank you! After listening to your pod cast I was inspired to get my act together. I've been transitioning to a lower carb eating style with increased fats and moderate protein. It's been going well - lost some weight and body fat %. I'm a relatively large guy, 6'2", 230 lbs, with approx 15%bf. But the true trial came this weekend when I ran the Grand Canyon Rim to Rim to Rim. it's 48 miles and 11000 feet of climbing. I've been running ultras for a number of years and have always used "hammer nutrition" products and consumed around 2-300 calories per hour. For this run I tried something I had never used before (Cardinal sin, I know) I used Ucan super starch, Vespa and a couple of Nut butter packets. I Felt Amazing the entire way. I began to feel sleepy in the final miles so I busted out some sport jelly beans that I had held in reserve and the glucose and caffeine woke me up and I flew out of the Canyon with a total run time of just over 13 hours. For the entire day I consumed just under 200 grams of carbs and approx 88 calories per hour! I never thought that it was possible. Thanks again for your insight and inspiration.

Natural UTI Remedies

Craig says @ 00:29:53He has a friend who is in her mid-70s who struggles with Urinary Tract Infections. She has tried all the stuff the docs suggested but they still come back. Do you have any ideas?

In my response to Craig, I mention the SexyBack Summit by Christa Orecchio and also the d-Mannose supplement and Uva Ursi herb. How To Detox Your Liver

Kristopher says @ 00:35:40 Is currently rather healthy (and an ultra runner) but was a chronic hard drug abuser in the past. He just went through a WellnessFX Performanceblood test and everything looks ok (except for elevated ALT, Liver Enzymes). Is there something specific he should be looking for or at? Is there a cleanse or detox he should use to minimize or heal the damage he has done to himself.

In my reply, I mention the following: -Liposomal Glutathione -Chlorella from RecoveryBits (use 10% discount code BEN) -Activated Charcoal -Full Spectrum Antioxidant like Lifeshotz -Capracleanse Can you drink BulletProof Coffee every day?

Allie says @ 00:52:12 Do you think it is a good idea to use Bulletproof Coffeeeveryday or should you take a few days off per week and save it for "big days"?

Six Ways To Deal With Anxiety

Michael says @ 00:58:34What would you recommend for someone with a General Anxiety Disorder and resulting chronic/adrenal fatigue. He is looking for a more natural approach to treating his disorder. He's been on meds and has weened himself off. Then he tried some natural remedies like valarian, st. john's wort, and 5-htp. They've been working pretty well but he is still feeling fatigued. He is looking for supplements, lifestyle advice, or other remedies.

In my response to Michael, I recommend: -FiveMinuteJournal -The HeartMath Institute -DirectLabs NeuroAdrenal Expanded test -PassionFlower extract -Travacor by Nutriscience -The Kalish Method book Brock also mentions: Taming Your Gremlin: A Guide to Enjoying Yourself and When Perfect Isn't Good Enough: Strategies for Coping with Perfectionism. Proven Ways To Fix Muscle Cramps

Christopher says @ 01:13:13He recently lost a lot of weight, started eating paleo and started racing Ironman. Since then he has been getting a lot of cramps in calves, hamstrings and thighs. Not necessarily while training or racing but when he is asleep. If he flexes his calf hard enough he can cause it to cramp whenever he wants. Is there something he could add into his diet to help? Could it be dehydration?

In my response to Christopher, I mention the article on muscle cramps and I mention Natural Calm Magnesium.

Natural solutions for bloodshot eyes

Deanna says @ 00:25:44 Wondering what she can do about the blood shot-ness in the whites of her eyes. She wants the whites to be white again! She's in her mid-30s, she runs about 6 miles a day, she eats healthy and gets plenty of sleep. Could it be something lacking in her diet? ~ In my reply, I recommend this presentation on eye health from the Ancestral Health Symposium.

-----------------------------------------------------

Listener Q&A:

As compiled, edited and sometimes read by Brock, the Ben Greenfield Fitness Podcast "sidekick".

Testimonial from Chris @ 00:18:28In a period of 6 months every major aspect of my life - professional, personal and mental - hit complete failure. In a dark place, in incredibly bad health, recovering from a second lower spine surgery, scrambling after my startup company closed shop, spiraling from an incredibly bad (like Manti T'eo meets Catfish bad) relationship breakup, following a two week whiskey bender in Vegas, my older brother (Michael) answered my social network plea to help me hit the life reset button. Together we trained for and finished our first 70.3 triathlon in only 90 days. In the process I'm now in the best shape of my life and have achieved a new level of mental clarity and drive. My 70.3 race goals (in decreasing order) were to 1) finish the half-ironman 2) finish under 6:00:00 maximum 3) finish under 5:45:00 stretch 4) do not walk during the run leg 5) leave with a desire to continue training in endurance multi sports and 6) beat my brother -he beat me in both of our tune-up olympic distance triathlons.

Is Alkaline Water A Scam?

BodyChem says @ 00:22:30Kangen Water "a means of delivering alkaline water to your body". Is this a good thing to do for as source of hydration all the time or just now and then?

ADHD Diet for Kids

Breakfast says @ 00:30:51She has a 10-year-old son that will not eat breakfast. He is on an ADHD medication so he really needs to eat a breakfast with protein in it. Would you recommend a protein powder smoothie for breakfast? She read that Coronation Instant Breakfast was a good thing to give him (due to the vitamins and minerals). She doesn't want to give that to him but she does want to get some protein in with the meds.

Losing weight after adrenal fatigue

Fatloss says @ 00:40:59 Recovering from adrenal fatigue and wants to lose the 10lbs he put on while recovering. What would be the best way to lose the weight without risking a relapse? ~ In my response, I mention the CoolFatBurner.com vest and Focal furniture website.

What is the best biohacking device?

Jen says @ 00:50:20 She has a birthday coming up next month and wants to ask for a biohacking tool or electronic. What would be the best one be for the money that will tell her the most information? She does half and full marathons but mostly just goes to the gym and does group exercise classes. She already has a Garmin and a HR Monitor. ~ In my response, I mention the Azumio Argus + LifeTrak device OR the Zensorium Tinke OR the FitBit. We also mention the MindAlive therapy device.

How to test your electrolytes

Jeremy says @ 00:59:08 He is looking for a good way to track his electrolytes. Is there a way to know what you are specifically low on? He currently uses endurolytes (20 ounces of water and 4 endurolyte pills per hour) but doesn't know if that is the right ratio. ~ In my reply, I mention WellnessFX Baseline Test and DirectLabs Mineral Panel. I also talk about Onnit+ Himalayan Sea Salt or trace liquid minerals.

How to train for speed and endurance at the same time

Mathew says @ 01:04:30 He is doing a "stair race" in February (less than 5 minutes all out max effort) and then do a "50 mile running race" in May. He is worried that he does not have time to switch his body over in between. He has a solid base going into the training but is worried about training for both races almost at the same time. ~ In my response I mention this article on Power and Speed movements.

For the past 4 days, I've been living in the Rocky Mountain National Park - at above 9000 feet altitude in the depths of the Colorado wilderness. During each of those days, I took a 15-30 minute icy cold plunge into the big mountain lake...

...and there's a very specific reason why - something called "cold thermogenesis" (also known as "CT").

If you don't know what CT is - or why it can help you get massively tougher, burn fat faster, decrease inflammation, boost performance and build cardiovascular endurance, then today's Tim Ferriss Cold Thermogenesis Special Episode is for you.

In this interview, I talk more about the topic of cold and fat loss with Tim Ferriss, and NASA materials engineer Ray Cronise. In this episode, we discuss:

-Why weight loss experts are wrong when they say that “calories in=calories out” is the weight loss equation….

-What type of self-experiments Tim conducted to see whether changes in body temperature can result in weight loss…

-Exactly how your biology responds to cold, and what it means for your rapid fat loss…

-What to eat before cold exposure to make you lose even more fat, faster…

-Practical ways to get instant cold exposure for weight loss…

-The future of research and experimentation in cold exposure and fat loss…

Due to the fact that I'm off to London this week to speak at the Global Triathlon Conference and do a Primality workshop with Darryl Edwards, we dug this extremely popular podcast episode out of our archives. If you want more resources on cold thermogenesis, then you're in luck. In addition to today's podcast, I'd highly recommend you check out the following:

-The DeSoto Arm Coolers I'll be sporting during Ironman Hawaii this year

-Tim's 4 Hour Body book

-What Is A Body Cooling Device, and Does It Actually Work?

-How You Can Use Cold Thermogenesis To Perform Like Lance Armstrong And Michael Phelps

-Tips For Burning More Fat With Cold Thermogenesis (And Why Icing Really Does Work)

-The BenGreenfieldFitness Premium content, which features an absolutely mind-blowing 1 hour cold thermogenesis lecture and slides by Ray Cronise

How To Get Better Results From Cold Thermogenesis

Jenna says @ 00:32:16 Is it better to use all cold water (like an ice bath) or cycle between cold and hot water (like a contrast shower) to maximize the effects of cold thermogenesis? What To Do About Excessive Sweating

Mike says @ 00:39:43 He's a 44-year-old who has worked out his whole life. In the last 10 years, he has started reacting differently to humidity - he sweats a lot. To the point of embarrassment. Alright folks, this is it.

For the past 12 weeks - in a build-up to racing an Ironman triathlon - I've been combining low carb and extreme minimalist training protocols...

...I've been biohacking every last detail...

...I've been tracking all blood and performance results...

...and now I'm releasing everything to you in one fell swoop.

If you've ever wanted to know exactly what happens to the body when you use ketosis, a low carbohydrate diet or minimalist training protocols, and then try to pull off a feat of physical performance such as an Ironman triathlon or a marathon or a Crossfit competition or anything else remotely insane, you're about to find out what happens - the good, the bad, and the ugly.

I am releasing this entire report as a Premium audio episode - and in addition to detailing all the nitty-gritty blood results, race results, practical fueling tips, workout details and every question about the race submitted on the BenGreenfieldFitness Facebook page, I also reveal some pretty shocking details that you're not going to want to miss, including whether I would ever do something like this again.

Resources mentioned during this audio include:

-My "Minimalist Training" Build-Up to Ironman Hawaii World Championships

-The video of what I ate during the race.

-Downloadable .pdf of WellnessFX blood results

-Official Ironman Canada results

-Low T3 Syndrome article by Chris Kresser

-Article about Sex Hormone Binding Globulin and Cortisol

If you need to catch yourself up to speed, the previous two episodes in this series are:

-The Great Ketogenic Ironman Experiment - Can You Go Low-Carb And Be A Fast Endurance Athlete Without Destroying Your Body?

-The Official "Ask Me Anything About Ketosis & Ironman" Premium Podcast

Listener Q&A:

As compiled, edited and sometimes read by Brock, the Ben Greenfield Fitness Podcast "sidekick".

How Hollywood Celebrities Can Look So Good

Louis asks @ 00:25:51 I have been seeing a lot of articles talking about Hollywood actors that have been able to get into amazing shape for their roles and have done so by working out 2-3 hours a day, 6 days a week. This seems to violate the rule of allowing for adequate recovery time and "over training", yet it seems like it's working for them judging by the results. So what gives? Is the importance of recovery time overstated or are these guys all using PED's to get into shape fast? ~ In my reply, I mention the body-typing fitness book at http://www.GetFitGuy.com

What To Do When You Can't Eat Fresh Food

Dom says @ 00:35:14 He normally eats lots of fresh food but his work is taking him away for 8 weeks to a place where all the food is packaged and stored for a long time. Could you recommend a supplement that will help him not feel sluggish from eating like this. ~ In my response, I mention the book "Eating On The Wild Side" and the "Healthy Travel Tips" video with Jessa and I and also the supplement "LivingFuel SuperGreens". I mention my previous episode on the race in Mongolia and my episode on the Boy Scout trip. In those podcasts, I had talked about Pemmican, Cocochia bars, and Supergreens. I also mention you can make your own beef jerky OR eat 200-300 calories of jerky from US Wellness Meats. You can also eat or swallow 25-50 EnergyBits and 5-10 Master Amino Pattern (MAP) capsules. Use 10% discount code “BEN” at EnergyBits.com and get MAP at pacificfit.net.

Anemia From Your Gut

Jasmine says @ 00:45:24 Her best friend who is 19-years-old and has only had her period once (when she was 12). She is slight, Swedish, has low iron and is gluten intolerant. Are there some tests she should get? What kind of diet should she be on? They want to avoid meds. ~ In my reply, I recommend the WellnessFX Performance panel and also the GI Effects panel from DirectLabs. I also discuss the Gut Fixing Pack, supplement Floradix and a gut healing diet such as the Specific Carbohydrate Diet.

Natural Remedies for H-Pylori

Nenad says @ 00:54:58 A few weeks ago he was diagnose with H-Pylori along with gut pain, bloating and irregular bowel movements. He wants to treat this naturally. Can he use Oil of Oregano to treat the infection? Is there another/better way? He has noticed a lack of energy and strength lately, could that be related? ~ In my reply to Nenad, I mention how I opted to take a high-grade oil of oregano four times per day and a supplement called mastic gum two times per day, and I was good to go within a month. I probably got lucky, because many times, parasitic infections require more serious medication and long term treatment. Often, it all depends on the type of parasite you have.

What Is The Clear Skin Diet

Hannah says @ 01:01:57 She is in her early 20s and did the "Clear Skin" diet and a bunch of topical stuff that the dermatologist recommended but nothing worked. She doesn't want to take an antibiotics - what would you recommend? ~ In my response to Hannah, I recommend a Paleo Autoimmune protocol.

5 Ways To Know If Your Workout Is Working

Daniel asks @ 01:11:08 How do you assess a new regimen, whether it's a new diet, supplement, workout routine, etc , when there are an infinite amount of factors affecting how you feel day-to-day? Many of these influences may not even be known or considered. ~ In my response, I mention this study on traditional vs. circuit training.

Testimonial from Rolynn After reading some of Ben's articles, he was able to diagnose himself with gluten intolerance, clean up his diet and start setting some PRs in his races again (first ones since May). He also dropped 3lbs and felt much better and lighter. He could also feel his body getting cleaner. He really credits your articles on eating gluten free prior to race days and the 4 day detox challenge.

New Ways To Sleep Better

Heather says @ 00:25:32 Body Health just put out a new supplement called Healthy Sleep Ultra. It is a little expensive but she knows they make good quality supplements. She has sleep issues and has tried many things that you have suggested. If this is something new that might be able to help her, she is willing to spend the money but she wanted your opinion first. ~ In my response to Heather, I mention:

How To Track Your Sleep

Michael says @ 00:33:59 He uses the Sleep Tracker app by Innovative Sleep Solutions. They say it is 90% accurate as compared to a real sleep test. Do you believe them? Do you know of any sleep tracking apps or devices that might be better? ~ Here's where you can buy the Sleeptracker from Amazon and support the podcast.

Should Blood Sugar Go Up When You Exercise

Jason asks @ 00:43:21 He is a Type 1 diabetic, 31 years old, and is having trouble with his glucose readings in the morning. They jump very quickly, especially after exercise which he knows is normal. He has been counteracting the effects of exercise raising his blood sugar with some fast acting insulin but is looking for a better, more natural way, to control it. He has been IM from 6pm until noon and he follows a low-carb ketogenic diet. ~ In my response to Jason, I mention MPX100, but be careful if diabetic.

Are Fillers In Multivitamins Bad?

Jennifer says @ 00:54:01 She takes a lot of supplements (and I do mean a lot) and is concerned about the "other" ingredients in her supplements like: Vegetable Cellulose, silica, vegetable magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, dicalcium phosphate, vegetable stearic acid. She doesn't know what those are or how they impact the body. Could they be causing issue when taken in aggregate? ~ In my response, I mention porphyrin and toxin testing with Directlabs.

Should You Get Your Hip Injected?

Will says @ 01:01:10 He has been diagnosed with a torn hip labrum. He also has very little cartilage left in his hip. His doctor wants him to try Synvisc. Do you have an opinion on that? Also, if he had $50/month to spend on supplements, what do you think would be the best way to spend that money? ~ In my response, I recommend Capraflex and fish oil.

How To Eliminate Decision Fatigue

Brian wrote @ 01:08:36 You recently talk about decision fatigue. Although I believe this is a problem for me on occasion I feel my problem is more decision overload. Too many variable in the grand scheme of is this the right day to do this work out, right time to eat this, right ingredients, right protein/fat/carb make up etc. It seems like there is always another level of decisions. What should I do to simply this? ~ In my response to Brian, I mention my article on decision fatigue and this NY Times article on decision fatigue. I also mention my "Don't Mow Your Lawn" article.

News flash: lots of pills, capsules, tablets, and vitamins end up completely unabsorbed, in a pile of poo, in your toilet.

From liposomal glutathione to transdermal magnesium, the truth is that there are delivery mechanisms for vitamins, minerals, nutrients and any other pills you may be popping that are 5 to 20 times more potent than regular delivery mechanisms like simply swallowing a capsule or tablet.

But although they can literally give you a nearly unfair advantage when it comes to enhancing your performance, detoxing your body quickly, massively boosting your immune system or sparking a significant increase in your IQ... ...these delivery mechanisms fly under the radar.

Not anymore.  In today's podcast interview with Mark Joyner (pictured right), you're going to learn everything you need to know about how to deliver important nutrients to your body in much more efficient ways that simply popping a pill... Mark is the author of the Do-It-Yourself Nanotech Super Nutrients Guide and the biohacks, detoxes, and nutrient delivery mechanisms we discuss during the show (which he details in the guide) include:

-liposomal delivery

-nebulization

-vaporization

-sublinguals

-transdermals

-binding

-and much more.

Mark is an author, inventor, and serial entrepreneur. He is Founder and CEO at Simpleology, a web application that helps people and teams get more done faster.

Are you confused by what your cholesterol levels really say about your health?

Do you wonder if all the exercise and healthy eating you're doing even affects your cholesterol numbers?

Don't you wish someone could just spell it out in simple English and tell you what, if anything, you need to do to improve your heart and overall health?

You get all the answers from Jimmy Moore and I in today's podcast. Jimmy is a prolific and highly respected health blogger and podcaster, and in his new book "Cholesterol Clarity", he interviews 28 of the world's top health experts from various fields to give you the complete lowdown on cholesterol. You're going to be shocked at what you learn, and it goes way above and beyond Jimmy's freak thumb dislocation that revealed his entire musculoskeletal system was in a downward tailspin (don't worry, you'll hear how that relates to cholesterol when you listen in).During our interview, I ask Jimmy:

-Why are your LDL-C and total cholesterol number not as important in determining your health as your doctor may think?

-So what *should* your doctor should be testing for?

-Where do HDL and triglycerides fit in?

-So when does cholesterol actually become "dangerous"?

-Why don't cholesterol-lowering statin drugs necessarily solve heart health concerns?

-Why is consuming saturated fat good and why are carbohydrates detrimental to attaining the best cholesterol numbers?

-Why there is a growing number of physicians, researchers and nutritionists who believe treating cholesterol numbers is virtually irrelevant?

Questions, comments or feedback about why cholesterol isn't bad? Visit the BenGreenfieldFitness.com website! And be sure to grab the Cholesterol Clarity book by clicking here.

Can Qigong lower your cortisol?

Craig says @ 00:29:58The folks over at SweeBeat recommended that he try Qigong to help with some sympathetic dominance. He also wanted to recommend people try the iPad app "Healthy with Simple Qigong".

How to build muscle and endurance at the same time

Chuck says @ 00:37:12Just got hired as a personal trainer at a gym and wants to "look more the part" (put on some muscle) but doesn't want to sacrifice his triathlon endurance training. Would it help to take Creatine? Should the Creatine Monohydrate be blended with beta alanine and citrulline malate?

~ In my response to Chuck, I recommend my protocol at http://www.Tri-Ripped.com and the Muscle Gain Pack. I also discuss: -20-25g portions of DEEP30 protein (whey) or LivingProtein (vegan) spread throughout day, at 0.7-0.8 grams per pound body weight. -Creatine – 0.3g/kg bodyweight for 5-7 days followed by 5g/day. No need to cycle. Recommend Kreaceps capsules. -Carnitine – 750mg-2,000mg/day – in 2 doses. Recommend Nutrarev. -Citrulline – 6-8g, 30-60 minutes before exercise. Recommend Citruvol. -Beta-Alanine – 2-5g, 30-60 minutes before exercise. Recommend NOW Foods. -BCAA’s – 10-20g every 60-90 minutes during exercise. Recommend Recoverease. -Daily serving of concentrated greens (to balance pH). Recommend Enerprime (capsule), Capragreens (low calorie powder), Supergreens (meal replacement powder), or cycling between all three.

The ALCAT test for food allergies

Jenny says @ 00:52:42 She would like your opinion on the ALCAT Food Sensitivity Test. She had it done and then heard some controversial opinions about its validity. She was going to start changing her diet based on the test but now doesn't know if it is worthwhile. ~ In my response to Jenny, I discuss this ALCAT test.

In this premium podcast with Ben Greenfield, Ben answers the following questions about ketosis, Ironman training, nutrition and more:
  • Do you use bitter melon to help buffer blood sugar spikes in a effort to continue producing blood ketones? If yes, how important is the timing of taking the bitter melon for this and how much do you take each time?
  • Have you had any breaks from ketosis where you carb binge?
  • Please let us know about your experiences with oxaloacetate -- most importantly about the safety of it and how much (in your opinion) it boosted your performance.
  • I'm doing your TriathlonDominator.com plan, and am curious as to how you typically train right now... Are you still doing predominantly H.I.I.T. with long Z2 efforts sprinkled in?
  • How much does it cost you a month to eat that way? Carbs are so cheap and yummy.
  • Is there any advantage to adding hard to find meat like lamb and bison to my diet?
  • What are your thoughts on barefoot/minimalist  running? ( thinking performance & injury prevention)
  • Do you recommend anything for me in my first 5K? So far I’ve been working out for the last 2 months, 6 days a week, eating ok, I do cheat but I just pray I make it to the end.
  • What do you think of Ezekiel bread? I haven’t heard much, but I love bread and people say it is better for you.
  • I just read some good protein things with brewer’s yeast? Yay or nay?

Listener Q&A:

As compiled, edited and sometimes read by Brock, the Ben Greenfield Fitness Podcast "sidekick".

Does Fish Oil Cause Prostate Cancer? - Kelsey and Morimasa both asked @ 00:20:56 The headline "Fish oils may raise prostate cancer risks, study confirms (NBC News)" grabbed a lot of people's attention. What is your opinion on this study? ~ In my response, I mention SuperEssentials fish oil.

Are Body Fat Scales Accurate? - Body Fat says @ 00:28:48 She is curious how accurate body fat measuring gadgets and scales actually are. The one she used asked her age, height and weight and then she held on to two hand sensors for a minute. It told he she was 15% body fat (she is 25 and weighs 135-140lbs)... is that a good target or is that too low/too high? ~ In my response, I recommend the article "How To Measure Body Fat", the Body Metrix Ultrasound system and this episode of Endurance Planet.

Is Milk Healthy? - Jim says @ 00:40:48 Would like to know how lactose is processed by the body. How is it different from glucose, sucrose and fructose? How does it effect insulin levels and blood sugar levels? Also can you touch on IGF? A big portion (50-90%) of his carb intake is from milk sugar (2 to 3 gallons a week of grass fed, non-homogenized, pasteurized) should he change that? He has no issues with dairy.

How To Use A Standing Workstation - Standing Desk says @ 00:50:28 She uses a standing work station (for 4-6 hours a day) and has noticed that her recovery time after a hard workout has been drastically lengthened since she started standing. Is there a scientific reason for that or is it all in her head? ~ In my response, I recommend an inversion table and 110% Compression gear (use 10% discount code GREENFIELD).

What To Eat Before Surgery - Steve says @ 00:56:29 He is scheduled for slap-tear surgery on his right shoulder just 3 days after IM Steelhead 70.3. Is there anything he should do in the 3 days between the race and the surgery? He doesn't want to go into surgery too beat up. Any advice for not gaining weight during the recovery period would be appreciated as well. ~ In my response, I recommend loading on proteolytic enzymes like Recoverease prior to surgery and also taking Capraflex post surgery at 12 per day. I recommend this Recovery Pack. I also recommend this free e-book "How To Recover Like Wolverine from X-Men" and smell sticks for appetite control along with greens, amino acids, MPX100 and coconut oil.

How To Run Downhill - Tim says @ 01:08:26He is currently training for a half marathon (starts at 9,500 feet of elevation ending at 12,000 feet). It's a very technical course with some very steep downhills on a road. He was pretty beat up by it last year and is looking for some ways to go a little faster, lessen the impact of the downhill and fuel for this race.

Listener Q&A:

As compiled, edited and sometimes read by Brock, the Ben Greenfield Fitness Podcast "sidekick".

Testimonial from Chris Hughes @ 00:23:14 He's loving his custom training plan from Ben and can't wait to race Ironman Canada.

Can You Still Exercise When Recovering From Overtraining? - Mark says @ 00:27:46 He has been diagnosed with early stage over-training syndrome and was prescribed 1 month to 1.5 months of rest and recovery (he has been training for 7 years straight). He is wondering what he can do to speed his recovery along (supplements, stretching, mobility exercises, resistance training). ~ In my response to Mark, I recommend this article on overtraining recovery.

How To Push Yourself While Racing - Brett says @ 00:39:32 She is wondering if you have any tips on how to go harder in the beginning and middle or races and workouts? She feels like she is "saving herself" for the last push of a race or workout. ~ In my response to Brett, I mention how Andy Potts breathes before a race.

What Is The Best Blood Test? - Julia says @ 00:48:58 She usually takes 3 to 4 days after running or a spin class (5 days after resistance work) to feel like working out again. Could this be a diet or nutrition issue that is causing her to recover so slowly? ~ In my response to Julia, I recommend a micronutrient analysis - specifically the ION Profile w/40 Amino Acids-METAMETRIX KIT. I also recommend the Longevity test and my article on how to recover quickly from workouts.

How To Fix Exercise Induced Anemia - Ken says @ 00:57:01 At a recent checkup at the doctor he found out that although his hematocrit and hemoglobin levels are normal, his red blood cell size is on the low side of normal (mean carpuscular volume) and his ferritin is about 50% of normal. He is not yet anemic but he is headed that direction. He has some mild hemorrhoids but they do not bleed. He had a colonoscopy that was normal. No ulcers. He is an avid triathlete and is wondering if the sport may have caused this issue. ~ In my response to Ken, I recommend he listen to "Legally Increase Your Hematocrit & Oxygen Levels". I also recommend he introduce a lactoferrin supplement and Floradix.

Natural Remedies for Tonsil Stones - Zach says @ 01:07:28 Wants to know more about Tonsil Cheese and how to get rid of it. ~ In my response to Zach, I recommend Oil of Oregano.

Are Prohormone Supplements Dangerous and 3 Good Testosterone Supplements - Chas says @ 01:13:11 He has been using prohormones supplements. In the past 18 months he has done 4 different long cycles with 3 months between cycles. He focuses on dialing in his pericycling and postcycle supplementation and gets plenty of sleep and stays hydrated even though he is training hard. He wants to build size and strength but he really likes to get the strength boost that leads to better size gains. What are you thoughts on prohormones and do you have any tips other than postcycle therapy to restore endogenous hormones? ~ In my response to Chas, we discuss these prohormone supplements. I recommend this Muscle Gain Pack and a good herbal testosterone blend like RenewMale or Aggressive Strength or Onnit T Plus.

Is It OK To Be Addicted To Exercise?

58 min
View

Do you feel like you're just not normal when you miss your workout?

Do you get grumpy when you skip your planned physical activity?

Do you sometimes sacrifice work and relationships to be able to squeeze in an exercise session?

Are you addicted to the feeling you get during or after a long run or bike ride or weight lifting workout?

Is this stuff normal, and is it OK to be "addicted to exercise"?

In today's podcast episode with "The Long Run" author Mishka Shubaly (pictured right), Mishka and I explore exercise addiction, and whether it is OK to be addicted to exercise.

Who is Mishka Shubaly?

After receiving an expensive MFA in Fiction from Columbia University, Mishka realized he was more interested in playing music in dive bars than writing. He lived out of a Toyota minivan for a year, touring nonstop, and has shared the stage with artists like The Strokes, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs and The Decemberists among others.

His Kindle Singles for Amazon have all been bestsellers. He writes true stories about drink, drugs, disasters, desire, deception and their aftermath. His work has been praised for its grit, humor, fearlessness and heart. The book "The Long Run" is his mini-memoir detailing his transformation from alcoholic drug abuser to sober ultrarunner.

Mishka Shubaly lives in Brooklyn where he writes music and plays bass for a band called the Freshkills.

During our interview, I ask Mishka:

-How does the experience you feel during, say, a run compare from a psychological standpoint to how you felt when drinking or using drugs?

-Because of things like the runner's high and endorphin release, do you think that people with "addictive personalities" have a greater predisposition towards endurance sports?

-Do you think that positive addictions like exercise can be taken too far?

-What are your top tips for people who find themselves potentially addicted to exercise, or working out to the extent to which it might damage their body or detract from their relationships or job?

Do you have your own questions, comments, feedback or thoughts about whether it is OK to be addicted to exercise? Leave your thoughts at http://www.bengreenfieldfitness.com/?p=14483 and be sure to grab Mishka's book for $1.99.

Listener Q&A:

As compiled, edited and sometimes read by Brock, the Ben Greenfield Fitness Podcast "sidekick".

How To Know If A Supplement Is Safe - Amie asks a follow-up question from #245 @ 00:16:32 I know you ultimately recommend bitter melon extract over the cissus. However, if one wanted to try Cissus Quadrangularis could you recommend a brand and dosage? ~ In my response to Amie, I recommend FDA.gov search database, and also the previous podcast episode we did about how to know if your supplements are safe. Also, Consumerlab.com approved quality product seal, NSF International dietary supplement certification, and U.S. Pharmacopeia dietary supplement verification program.

How To Eat For A Half Ironman - Shelly says @ 00:26:39 She is doing Vineman 70.3 Triathlon in 2 weeks and has been following a low-carb diet and doesn't know what to do for fueling during the race. She has Generation UCan, Energy28 and MAP but she doesn't know what to do in terms of solids. Almond butter? Or is that too much fat? She needs some direction since most of her friends are not fat adapted. ~ In my response to Shelly, I mention The Endurance Pack and also X2Performance.

What To Do About Multiple Allergies - Allergy says @ 00:35:17 She has allergies to most things in nature (pollen, rag weed, dust, mold). She tried allergy shots, muscle testing and acupressure therapy and acupuncture, and all the over the counter remedies as well. What do you think about allergies? Are they over diagnosed? And what do you think of these therapies and how they affect people? ~ In my response to Allergy, I recommend an autoimmune diet. I also recommend the podcast episode about How To Fix Exercise Induced Asthmas In Kids. During our discussion, Dr. Minkoff and I discuss the following resources:

-Keeping kids away from potential digestive irritants or foods that could trigger an autoimmune reaction, especially gluten (a very good book I recommend on this topic is “Gut & Psychology Syndrome“).

-Stool test to asses whether kids are low in HCL, and if they are, getting them on an HCL supplement.

-Red blood cell test for magnesium (look for a naturopathic physician in your area who may be able to order this) and use of a magnesium supplement if deficiency is found.

-Use of fermented foods and probiotics.

-Considering use of a colostrum supplement in a child who was raised on formula and not breastmilk.

-Use of anti-inflammatory antioxidants and anti-inflammatory fish oil.

-Looking into allergy elimination techniques (i.e. NAET.com) to identify and eliminate potential allergenic foods that kids may be eating.

-Educating yourself on the realities and alternatives to immunizations and vaccinations. The website Dr. Minkoff recommends is: http://www.nvic.org

How Much Superstarch Should You Use? - Trevor says @ 00:45:20 He went to a Bob Seebohar seminar this past Thursday (promoted by UCAN). Bob was adamant that the recommended servings of 1 per hour was more than enough (even when Trevor mentioned that you, Ben, typically recommended double that per hour) and Bob said that would only be neccessary pre-race (Bob's not a fan of other additives such as X2, MAP). Bob also suggests barely putting any water on it so you can make paste and eat it, which seems counter intuitive to the modality. Trevor's first 70.3 was yesterday. He nursed 2 servings the hour leading up to the swim then only had 2-3 servings on the bike. About 10-15 miles into the bike his quads were basically locking up on him and felt like they were glycogen depleted already. He's not a ketogenic person but he does eat low carb, super-high fat. He experimented with some on-course fuels during the run and one GU Chomp actually gave him a solid burst that lasted a good half hour or so. He hadn't consumed that much sugar at one time in over a year. Is Bob wrong? Did Trevor screw himself by cutting his dosage in half from what you recommend? Running With A Weighted Vest - Matthew says @ 00:56:19 Is switching from Triathlon to Ultra-marathons (signed up for a 50 and wants to do a 100 miler). Is wondering about using a weighted vest. He heard they can make a 1 hour run feel like a 3 hour run. Would that be a good thing to use when training for an ultra? ~ In my response, I recommend ZFO Sports Weighted Vests. What To Do About Runner's Toe - Longtoe says @ 01:01:47 His second toe (the toe next to his big toe) is longer than his big toe and is causes him pain (when running). Is there anything he can do about that?

How Women Can Naturally Increase Fertility - Jennifer says @ 01:09:01 She has recently being diagnosed with estrogen dominance, secondary to low progesterone. She is trying to get pregnant and hasn't been able to conceive (hasn't has a period in years). She has stopped exercising and is eating "a lot". Do you have any thoughts on what they can do for fertility? Is this state reversible? ~ In my response, I recommend the "Better Baby Book" by Dave Asprey. I also recommend the following estrogen dominance formula for enhancing fertility:

-Consider progesterone cream WITH testing or sublingual progesterone

-Do all the recommended Detox Add-Ons and Detox Gear

-Vitamin B /antioxidant complex – 1 packet per day

-Integrative Therapeutics AM/PM Perimenopause Formula - take per recommendations

-Phenocane - 4 caps per day

-Di-indolemethane (DIM) - 200mg/day

Wil Hahn, a professional motocross racer, broke his hand in practice at the last round of the Supercross series, raced the main event with a broken hand, got 3rd place, then went on to won the overall title by a couple points.

Motocross is an extreme sport...

...outdoor motocross races occur in the heat of the day at for 30 minutes plus 2 laps, riding in full gear at lactate threshold for the entire time...

..."armpump” can be a serious, painful problem when racing...

...dangerous levels of dehydration are extremely common...

...and in this BenGreenfieldFitness phone app insider interview with Wil, you'll find out what kind of fitness and nutrition plan is necessary to succeed in one of the toughest sports on the face of the planet. Wil and I compare Ironman triathlon to motocross, talk about Wil's motocross fitness routine, what Wil eats and drinks for motocross, tracking heart rates, racing with an injury, and more!

Don't believe that motocross is an extreme sport that  just might beat up your body more than any other sport? Then watch this crazy crash sequence video with Wil Hahn, and then keep reading for a motocross fitness routine...

An Extreme Fitness Routine

Motocross requires a combination of coordination, strength, power and extreme lactic acid buffering capabilities. To build this kind of extreme fitness, try the following full body exercise routine, performed three times per week.

-5-10 minute dynamic warm-up (Don’t know what a dynamic warm-up is? Read this mobility article.)

-3-4 sets of 6-10 reps of each of the following, performed as either a circuit for an extreme twist, or with 60 seconds to 2 minutes recovery after each exercise for a more traditional approach (get exercise videos at YouTube.com/BenGreenfieldFitness)

  • Vertical Pulling (i.e. pull-up)
  • Vertical Pushing (i.e. overhead press)
  • Horizontal Pulling (i.e. seated row)
  • Horizontal Pushing (i.e. incline bench press)
  • Double or Single Leg Strength (i.e. squat)
  • Lift (i.e. deadlift)

3-4 sets of 6-10 reps of any or all of the following, performed as either a circuit, or with 60 seconds to 2 minutes recovery after each exercise:

  • Slams (i.e. medicine ball slams)
  • Throws (i.e. medicine ball throws)
  • Tosses (i.e. medicine ball underhand throws)
  • Jumps (i.e. double leg box jumps)

Finish with 3 sets of 12-15 reps, back-to-back, of each of the following:

  • Twists (i.e. cable torso twists)
  • Core flexion (i.e. hanging leg raises)

Then, at a separate time of day, or on your “non-lifting” day, do 20-30 minutes of high intensity interval training, which would include treadmill or cycling intervals, rowing, swimming, sprint repeats etc., preferably with time lengths of 20-60 seconds and rest intervals of 10-30 seconds.

Assuming you're also practicing or playing a sport, this routine is more than enough to get you fit fast.

If you're not practicing or playing a sport, you may want to add in a 2-4 extra 30-60 minute "tempo" or aerobic workouts.

After you take a listen to the interview (using the free BenGreenfieldFitness phone app), or after you try the motocross fitness routine, leave your questions, comments and feedback at http://www.bengreenfieldfitness.com/?p=13203

Listener Q&A:

As compiled, edited and sometimes read by Brock, the Ben Greenfield Fitness Podcast "sidekick".

Fiona (FitBritMom) asks @ 00:21:39 - What Are The Best Fat Loss Supplements? Could you give your expert opinion on cissus extract for joint health and weight management. She is currently training for a marathon, is turning 40 next year and has a family history of arthritis. Is cissus worth it or is there something else she should be taking instead? ~ In my response to Fiona, I reference joint support supplement Capraflex and also the Pacific Elite Fitness Fat Loss Pack. I also discuss Cissus Quadrangularis supplements inflammation and the website InflammationFactor.com.

Steve asks @ 00:31:57 - What To Do About Worn Cartilage He is a former overweight substance abuser turned ultra runner that has had meniscus surgery twice, wears a knee brace, foam rolls, has done all the strengthening exercises for his legs and glutes, has done acupuncture and still has knee pain. Feels like it is bone on bone. He really wants to be able to run again, is there anything else he can do? He really wants to set a good example for his kids and seems to think he will slip back into his previous life if he can't run. ~ In my response to Steve, I mention "The Elliptigo".

Eric says @ 00:39:38 - Controlling Blood Sugar During Ketosis Is it necessary to do the blood sugar hacks (like using a lot of cinnamon and bitters) if you are in ketosis? And clearly another Eric Is also wondering if you have noticed the "ketogenic breath"? ~ In my response to Eric, I mention Bitter Melon Extract. I also mention Charcocaps and these Metron breath ketone measuring devices.

Bob asks @ 00:48:39 - Natural Remedies for Exercise Induced Asthma Do you have any suggestions for some diagnosed with EIB (exercise induced bronchial spasms)? Benadryl seems to help but he doesn't want to take that all the time. ~ In my response, I mention this asthma podcast with Dr. Minkoff. I also recommend the Autoimmune Paleo diet and this TrainingPeaks autoimmune diet. And the natural anti-histamine fish oil.

Anonymous asks @ 00:56:33 - Does ADHD Medication Affect Performance? He is a 50-year-old athlete who takes 20mg of Adderall for ADHD and also .5mg Clonazepam for sleep and anxiety. He is wondering how these might be effecting his performance (for good or bad). Also, are there ways to use more natural substances to ween off of these medications? ~ In my response, I mention the GAPS diet for ADHD. I also mention my recommended Brain Supplements and Brain Add-Ons, including: -500-1000mg Aniracetam combined with 1-2g Phosphatidylcholine, used sparingly before high mental demanding activities -2-6g/day triglyceride based fish oil – recommend SuperEssentials -Acetyl-L-carnitine – 500mg, 1x/day – recommend 1-2 servings “NutraRev” per day -Alpha-lipoic-acid, 100mg, 1x/day - recommend 1-2 servings “NutraRev” per day -For depression/lack of motivation – 3000mg Tyrosine + 300mg 5-HTP -It is HIGHLY recommended that you do neurotransmitter testing before experimenting with these particular supplements, but for neurotransmitter balance (behavioral issues, depression, etc.), you can start with 4 NeuroReplete (to balance catecholamines and increase serotonin), twice daily (in the AM and at 4 PM) with 2 CysReplete (for L-Cysteine to increase catecholamine synthesis or when using D-5 Mucuna), three times daily (the first dose at noon). Read the Kalish Method book or talk to Ben before experimenting too much with this stuff.

Gina says @ 01:11:45 - How To Heal Injured Ribs Fell off a chair and bruised (maybe fractured) her ribs (says she was not drunk). Went to a chiropractor, told him about her ribs and he still did a spinal adjustment and re-injured her ribs. What do you recommend to heal them as fast as possible - wants to get back to spinning, running, getting her HR up but can't really breathe right now or move her right side. ~ In my response I recommend a Rib Belt.
