This week I had the absolute pleasure of talking to Ryan Rae Harbuck.

She's the author of "When I grow up, I want TO BE A CHAIR", mother of 2, swim coach and a paraplegic.

She talks to me about her experience of being pregnant, giving birth and early post-partum stages whilst being a paraplegic.

It's an astonishing insight in a world which, most able-bodied, people would never even be able consider.

From being told that she would not be able to feel contractions, to weekly "are we almost there yet" check ups that turned out maybe not to be quite regular enough and a traumatic post-partum experience after the birth of her first son, to the birth of her second.

She shares some tips to make life a bit easier for other mums who are in a wheelchair and is overall a phenomenal story teller.

This is the FREEWHEEL extension she mentions in the interview. I am sure other suppliers are available.

You can find Ryan every where.

Her website
Instagram and Facebook

You can find her book at all major retailers, including Amazon, by going to this page and selecting your favourite retailer.

In the news this week  I talk about an experience one of my clients had with NMN. I have addressed NMN supplementation before and my client's experience highlights the issue I raised before about dosage. Here is a little article where you can find some more information on rising estrogen levels.

Remember to follow us on Instagram and Facebook for the competitions, wisdom and cute videos. And, of course, you can always find us on our YouTube channel if you like your podcast in video form with little pictures :)

This week I start talking about The UK government's, rather shameful, decision to delay the ban on multi-buy deals of shitty food (and related advertising).
And this leads me to the subject of personal responsibility for your own health; YOUR choices are the things that affect YOUR health the most.

I quote from Dr Morgan Levine, a scientist at Yale, in the above bit. You can read a Guardian interview with her here

And, of course, as a parent; your choices also have abig impact on your child's happiness and well-being. So what simple things can you do to make sure you are doing the best you can any given day and help your child be as healthy as they can be.

In the news this week;
I also talk about a study I came across that shows that taking Ibuprofen, and other anti-inflammatory drugs, may INCREASE the chances of chronic pain. So be careful with that stuff!! The same does NOT go for paracetamol, aspirin etc. so you seem to be better off taking that.

Remember to follow us on Instagram and Facebook for the competitions, wisdom and cute videos. And, of course, you can always find us on our YouTube channel if you like your podcast in video form with little pictures :)

Answering diastasis recti related questions again.

27 min Transcript

Send us Fan Mail

 This week I answer 3 diastasis recti related questions;

Is Hula Hooping really good for healing diastasis recti?

I answer the question and talk you through how to make sure you can do your hula hoop class safely when you have diastasis recti/or at least a gap.

Is it normal to have lower back ache the day after doing some diastasis exercises?

It is not uncommon but it's also not quite right as it shows you you're pushing too hard, to the point that your exercise becomes counter productive.

After not healing my diastasis recti properly after my last pregnancy, I now find myself pregnant again. Will my abs be completely ruined??

In short, NO, not if you do the right things now. For the longer answer about why it is essential for you to start now, you'll have to listen :)

"In the news this week"
I talk a bit about this study that came out in April that shows a clear link between MODERATE levels of physical activity and a significantly lower risk of depression. It just highlights the importance of exercise again, even if you only do a minimal amount you will likely get a big impact from it.

Remember to follow us on Instagram and Facebook for the competitions, wisdom and cute videos. And, of course, you can always find us on our YouTube channel if you like your podcast in video form with little pictures :)

 This week I talk about the easiest ways you can improve your health.

They barely require you to get off the couch AND don't cost you the earth so there is NO reason not to take this advice :)

I also briefly discuss some changes that are coming up for HPNB :)

"In the news this week" I talk a bit about Dr Mark Hyman and one of the big issues there is when it comes to following him, and many others like him.
This is the reel that I played a bit from.
This is the article I refer to when talking about him, should you wish to have a look. And here is the 2013 study that he was referring to.

This week I have the pleasure of talking to author Dawn M Barclay.

She's the author of a book called; "Traveling Different: Vacation Strategies for Parents of the Anxious, the Inflexible, and the Neurodiverse."

It's basically the travel bible for those on the autism spectrum as well as those with mood/attention disorders. Anyone who has a child with such issues or knows someone who does will benefit from the advice contained in this book, plus the tips for special needs children can soothe the hiccups of any family's travel.

In a fascinating conversation she basically takes us through the preparation stage of a trip through the trip and then we talk a bit about the return home.

She talks us through how to best prepare your child for traveling and a new routine/change in environment.
Then we talk about the type of trip that works best for neurodivergent children, things to take into account when booking your trip/places to stay.

She gives soo many tips that I couldn't possibly list them all here. All to make the trip as stress free for both you and your kid.

It's a wonderfully educational conversation with someone who clearly knows what they're talking about.

You can find Dawn, and her book.

On her website
On Facebook

Of course, as we mentioned, you can pre-order the book everywhere and I'll remind you again when it comes out early August.

"In the news this week" This study, published in the New England journal of Medicine that finds no benefits to intermittent fasting compared to any other form of diet, at least when it comes to weightloss.

After doing several "In the news this week" segments about household chemicals, micro plastic etc I finally found the perfect guest to come on and talk about exactly that.

Therese “Tee” Forton-Barnes is a Household Toxins health specialist and we talk about many, many things.

The problem with certain popular household cleaning products, aerosols and PFAS.

How my generation, and a lot of younger people as well, have been told for years that these products are completely safe when a lot of studies now show that they are not.

She talks about how one of her clients thought she had hayfever for years but it just turned out she needed to change what she washes her bedding with!

Which chemicals should you be aware of and which products to get rid of first.

Why the cumulative effects of chemicals is actually the key to health/them being unhealthy.

How to read a household product label and what ingredients to really look out for.

And the alternatives which do a good job and are probably cheaper!

You can find Tee everywhere online;

On the Green Living Gurus website
On
Instagram
On
Facebook of course
And on YouTube

Some easy to read links about various household products and their health impacts;

Aerosols, and another.
Household cleaner  , and another

There's no "In the news" or "Behind the label" segment this week, that will be back next week :)

Have I ever told you how lucky I am with my expert guests?

This week I had the pleasure of talking to Dr David Prologo.

He's a is a dual board-certified interventional radiologist and obesity medicine specialist. Dr. Prologo has spent more than twenty years specifically analyzing the phenomenon of diet attrition—why do diets always fail? More importantly, when they do fail, why do we blame the patients for that failure?

Just to give you some idea as to his credentials;

Dr Prologo has been recognized nationally and internationally for his pioneering work with human weight loss – including features on The Today Show, in the Washington Post, on Capitol Hill, in numerous in peer-reviewed journal publications, countless web based invited expert articles, and much more .

We had a tremendous chat about weightloss, why people fail.
How the diet and fitness industry is more than happy for people to fail and, more importantly, how to REALLY succeed at losing weight (though I think the lessons in his book go well beyond that and can be transferred to many other areas of change).

He provided some really interesting insights into weightloss journeys and how to make it stick permanently.
I promise you this is a must listen if you're considering trying to lose a bit of weight, have tried before and it didn't stick or are a fitness/diet professional.

Of course you can find Dr Prologo in all the usual spaces;

His website where you can order a copy of his amazing book
Facebook where you can catch all the latest updates and see what he's up to.

In the news this week This article in a Dutch newspaper  talking about how microplastics can now be found in 90% (!!!) of all make-up/shower products and how they find their way into nature through our sewage system. (Here's the Times article listing the same study)

Here is an article that gives you some alternatives if you're interested.

This also ties in nicely with next week's interview about household chemicals and how you can improve your child's, and your own, health by getting rid of some things around the house you really don't need or want.

This week I had the pleasure of talking to nutritional therapist Kirsten Chick.

Not only is Kirsten a nutritional therapist, She's a public speaker, educator, podcast host of not one but TWO podcasts and author of "Nutrition brought to life". In other words, she's incredibly knowledgable about all things food related.

We spent a solid hour talking about the effects of stress, and diet, on the human body.

We talk about the physical effects of stress on the human body, including on digestion and weightmanagement.
Whether food can cause an increase in the levels of stress.
Which foods help with stress-management and which nutrients to look out for, and what they do.
The benefit of taking 10-15 minutes screenbreaks, and other time-outs, every day.
Why eating whilst working is not the same as eating whilst stepping away from the computer.
The benefit of eating a bit more slowly.

And many, MANY other things.

It's a  fascinating chat with tonnes of wisdom and advice for all of us but especially powerful for women with young children. After all, stress-management can have such a huge impact on the health and happiness of you, and those around you, and Kirsten gives you a LOT of "easy to follow and implement" bits of information.

You can find Kirsten's "Nutrition brought to life" on Amazon and Waterstone's.
You can listen to the Nutrition Brought to Life podcast here
 Of course Kirsten is on Instagram, YouTube , and Facebook.

The seminars that we mentioned are listed below andI shall also remind you of these if you follow me on my Instagram as these look well worth attending.

April 27th 7-8.15pm online What is an Anti-Inflammatory Diet?
Thurs 19th May 7-8.30pm online  Nutrition for People Living with Cancer
Sat 21st May 9.30am-12.30pm in Brighton: Nutrition & Vitality
Thu, 9 June 2022, The secret to healthy snacking

In the news this week This article about the carbon emission savings if everyone in the UK ate a plantbased meal just 2x per week. Is it really the equivalent of planting 14billion trees?

 This week I talk about something that is very commonly discussed on diastasis recti support forums, and usually without the real answer actually being given.

The question will be something long these lines;

"My eldest child is 5 (nearly) and I had a 5 fingers gap closed down the 1-2 over the years but I can’t seem to get it to close any further . I’m a active person and not doing much exercise due to fear it will open back up is driving me mad. I am now trying a kettle bells class and aerobics . Any idea why I can’t close the last part?"

And the answers are usually something like this;
"Keep working at it. I bought system X (usually the one they're selling or are affiliates of) and that really helped close mine all the way down"

So A; Can you close the gap all the way?
And B; Should you be scared your diastasis will "open up" again after you've healed it?

I also briefly explain why losing fat can help some people with their diastasis recti recovery (though it should not be the starting point)

And I, very briefly, explain the difference between a ligament and fascia!

A version of the "behind the label" this week where I talk about false pricing. I came across a wonderful example this week where a dietitian had a "special offer of $6300 worth of value for ONLY $297"

If you could rate the podcast on your favourite platform that would be a big help.

Online pelvic floor programs don't work!

23 min

 This week we have a relatively short podcast. I mainly talk about why a program to heal your pelvic floor can not really be done/purchased online where as a program to heal Diastasis Recti can.

There are some excellent pelvic floor specialists on Instagram and a lot of the information they give is very useful however I personally wouldn't recommend you invest in any of their programs without a physical examination first.

In the news this week I briefly talk about an article one of my clients sent me. This article from the BBC about safety levels for PFAS, ( Perfluoroalkyl substances), of UK drinking water. I am trying to find someone to come onto the podcast and talk about householdchemicals, PFAs included, but still thought I'd mention it.
The article is based on this episode of the, excellent, "Costing the Earth" program on BBC Radio4. Do check it out if you're UK based,

This week I had the pleasure of talking to Athina Crilley (and her cats, Quiet Jasper and Shouty Jake)

Athina is a podcast host, author, content creator (and all-round very busy!). She is also a recovered anorexic and was kind enough to take some time out of her very busy schedule to talk to us about her recovery journey and her experience in overcoming her eating disorder.

She spoke about life as a young person with anorexia, how the NHS deals (or fails to) deal with children with eating disorders.

We touched on social media, the problem with "influencers" who give us the idea that we have to do what they do so that we can look the way they look.

She also spoke about the importance of a good support network to aid your recovery and what she does now that she is recovered from her eating disorder.

You can find Athina everywhere;

Her website
TikTok
Instagram
YouTube

In the news this week I touch on the story I spoke about a few months ago. If you remember David Bennett was given a genetically modified heart 2 months ago and unfortunately this week he passed away.
I received an email about this this week that said something along the lines of "See? This shows it will never work and that GM is a bad idea". That kind of thinking shows a bit of a misunderstanding about how medical procedures, and science, progress so I talk a bit about why this was still a tremendous achievement and is very promising indeed

This week I had the pleasure of talking to Danielle Sullivan.

She's a neurodiversity life coach, autism and disability advocate, autistic mother and host of the Neurodiverging podcast.

We had a tremendous chat about various things to do with either being diagnosed as neurodivergent yourself or raising neurodivergent children.

We covered "What to do if your child gets a neurodivergent (autism, ADHD etc) diagnosis?"
What works and what doesn't work with neurodivergent kids.
How every neurodivergent person is different.
The benefits of having a neurodivergent diagnosis.

And much, much more.

As I say in the podcast, several times: I learnt more in this hour than I could have done spending hours searching online.

You can find Danielle everywhere;

Facebook
Instagram
YouTube

In the news this week, I thought I would talk a bit about a study, from Stanford, that came out recently that showed that there is a difference between the brains of boys and girls with autism. Here is a link to the actual paper.

The reason I thought the study was interesting is because it, once again, highlights that women and men are different in physiology and that therefore using the same diagnostics and treatment methods in medicine is flawed. The more we are aware of this the easier it is to improve the health, and experience, of women overall.

This week I talk about the, frankly ridiculous, idea that you can't sit upright when getting into and out of bed. Or that you can't lift weights when you have diastasis recti.

Sure, that might be the case early on in your post-partum recovery but the thought that one of my clients expressed to me that "my physio told me that I always had to do that from now on" is simply incorrect, and actually just insane to even consider.

I talk about the one trick you need to be able to get in and out of bed without rolling around.

Part of it comes from the myth that diastasis recti is a "life-long condition" so I'll go into that a bit as well.

I also talk about why I think Post-partum personal trainers, and physios, should not have unreasonable cancellation policies. (Such as a 24 hours noitce policy)

I'm not doing an "in the news this week" as, obviously, there is only one thing that really matters at the moment.

This week I am talking about an email and conversation I had with someone;

She had twins 10 months ago, worked with a PT for 5 months and  saw no improvement at all. In her words; My belly is "huge and hard" and her personal trainer said it was down to bloating.

So I go over the 3 causes of big round post-partum bellies and, as always, offer the solutions in each case as well.

For those of you wanting to know the 3 causes without listening;

1; Bloating The lady had an IgG allergy test done and changed her diet, cutting out loads of things, without results after 3 weeks.

2; Visceral fat which you gain during pregnancy but which doesn't necessarily go away

Here are two studies and bits that I refer to, if you'd like to read for yourself
https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1038/oby.2011.163

Some evidence a higher protein/lower carb approach works well for visceral fat

https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/lose-visceral-fat#TOC_TITLE_HDR_4

 3; A personal trainer who doesn't really know what they're doing. Her personal trainer was a "Jenny Burrell" licensee.

In the news this week; A shocking piece of news that found that only 40% of women in the US had good cardiovascular health when they went into labour. I know that pregnancy, and labour, is supposed to be a miracle and magic and all natural but you really want to have decent cardiovascular health as the consequences can be pretty dire if you don't.
PLEASE work on your health during your pregnancy!!

We're back to normal this week!

After the episode on the "top 3", and talking about Michael Mosley's flawed book, I had an email asking me to go into some more detail about the "satiety theory" so I'm doing a bit about that.

I'm talking time-management. I know how many of you are struggling to fit everything in, especially your exercise routines, so I'm quickly talking about what you can do that works. And it's not "getting up 10 minutes earlier" or "switching the television off".

I'm also talking a bit about inclusivity...Yes, I know what you're thinking a middle-aged white guy taling about inclusivity butI think the point of affordability in post-natal care is an important one to make.

In the aftermath of last week's episode, or actually..last Saturday's Instagram post where I dared suggest that The Fat Doctor was not a positive influence in the health industry..someone very kindly sent me a link to the following paper.

https://nutritionj.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/1475-2891-10-9
"Weight Science: Evaluating the Evidence for a Paradigm Shift"

It's an interesting bit of work in which the authors make the case for a HAES approach when it comes to medicine. It suggests moving away from a weight-centered approach and has a lot of references in it.

So I'm spending this episode looking at the paper, going through some of the references, seeing where the authors and I agree (and we mostly do), where I think they could add some more caveats (and I feel they could, and maybe should) and where some people who are part of the HAES movement, including the Fat Doctor, seem to be missing the caveats in this bit of work and work like this.

As I say in the podcast, very rarely are geniune scientists as secure about their work as people who support or oppose the stance the scientists take. And that really showed last week.

Show notes (where I link to the studies and references and bits I quote) can be found in the transcript section to this podcast. I will obviously still add a full transcript later this week.

My top 3 "worst people" in the health and fitness industry.

67 min Transcript

Send us Fan Mail

On this week's episode I'm getting myself into trouble by mentioning my top 3 "worst people in health and fitness".

My top 3 are;

First bit up to 27-28 minute mark;

Nr 1 Dr Michael Mosley. He makes the list as a serial publisher of crash-diet books built on iffy interpretations of research.

Then 28 minute to Approx 52 minutes;

Nr 2 Dr Asher Larmie, also known as "The Fat Doctor".  They make the list as a serial denier of basic science which is often the case when activists get caught up in their own world.

A link to the study Dr Larmie quoted where they claim Obesity isn't a factor but race and ethnicity is...check the conclusion of the study to see my point;

https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamanetworkopen/fullarticle/2770946

And some links that show that the above is clearly incorrect/outdated

https://www.nature.com/articles/s41366-020-0648-x

https://www.science.org/content/article/why-covid-19-more-deadly-people-obesity-even-if-theyre-young

https://www.cdc.gov/obesity/data/obesity-and-covid-19.html

Now, as I point out, this is not about the people themselves. It's about their work and the overall message they send out.
As someone will, no doubt, point out; These people are not part of the health and fitness industry and...indeed, they are definitely not in the Health business.

52 minutes onwards;

We have Nr 3; The guys behind "Bosh", the vegan products, or at least their marketing department. This could have been deliciously Ella or "The Plant Chef/ founder of Wickd". We spoke before about the "veganisation of junk food" and the health problems that brings, which is why they made my top 3.

 On this week's episode I'm answering some questions that you sent in such as;

Does sleeping with a pillow between my legs really help my diastasis recti?

My physio told me I had to exercise for an hour a day to heal my diastasis but I don't have the time for that. Can I do less?

My personal trainer doesn't like me asking questions during exercise. But some of the things we do makes no sense to me?

How can I improve my grip strength after recovering from post-natal carpal tunnel?

And, in what is now called, "read past the label" of the week; Sudafed! Did you know that Sudafed "blocked nose", Sudafed "Sinus MAX Strength!" and Sudafed "congestion and headache relief" is pretty much the same stuff? Different price, different labels, different names...but the same old Sudafed.

This week I have a new set-up! So you should hopefully notice better sound quality on your little speakers. It costs a bit of money but you're worth it.

I am talking about how your diastasis recti really doesn't need a £9k surgery and your belly doesn't need to end up with a massive scar, in 90% of cases.

I also touch on weightloss with diastasis recti as I get asked this question a lot; "What weightloss exercises can I do when I have DR?" or "what is the best diet to follow to lose weight with DR"

A new section of the show, which I am yet to title but is currently called:
"Your label implies health and quality but you're trying to sell me garbage" (Catchy, isn't it?).

I bought some  bacon the other day. This stuff.

Finnebrogue's "better naked" nitrite free bacon.."with no nasties".

Obviously this sort of thing comes at a premium so imagine my surprise that it was still just crappy bacon with added water. No nasties but no quality either.
Very disappointing Finnebrogue, you Irish rascals!  Not buying this stuff again, I'll buy quality instead.

BTW, just incase you thought there was a good reason to add water to bacon. There isn't, it's just cheaper.

In the news this week"  about a man from Baltimore who was given a genetically modified pigs heart. Obviously I feel everyone should be a donor but, even if that happened, the numbers will never be big enough for everyone on the transplant list to be given what they need and this sort of breakthrough is incredible.

3 mistakes women make in their post-partum recovery

 On the back of an email I received this week I thought I'd go over 3 of the biggest mistakes women make when they work on their post-partum recovery.

The email I received was pretty standard, I get about 10-20 of these every month or so, so I'm guessing there are a lot more people out there whom are struggling with these things.

The email read as follows; I take you through the top 3 things that this lovely lady, like many others, is not quite getting right;

 Hi Peter,

  I really need your help in my case

 I gave birth to my second child ( birth weight 9lb) 2 years ago, since then my tummy is sticking out like a 6 months pregnant. I am not an active person but lean except the belly area. Weight is 126 lb’s with height 5”6. My DR is measuring 3 finger width and 2 knuckles deapth. Started lying vacuum, toe taps, bridges with vacuum, side planks and other DR related excercises and it’s been 10 days.
 My questions are.

 1. how long will it take to heal ?

 2. Can I do all other excercises along DR excercises since it’s not right after birth as my DR is 2 years old?

 3. Do you suggest any specific excercises that shrinks the belly fast?

 Thanks,

No "in the news this week" as all the health related news was depressing Covid stuff. So please get your vaccine or speak to someone who knows what they're talking about if you're vaccine hesistant.

This week, since it's the start of the New Year, I thought I would do an episode on "how to plan for, and succeed at,  improving your health".

No matter what your goal is this year, I will talk you through how to actually make it stick this year.

Want to lose weight? Want to improve your cardio vascular fitness? Want to lift heavier things or just get started with doing some exercise?

Maybe you'd like to just slow down and improve your mental health a bit.

Or is this the year where you'll finally improve your posture, stop your back from hurting and heal your diastasis recti.

It doesn't really matter what your goal is, if you follow some basic steps you are guaranteed to get the results you want. And it won't cost you the world.

Here are the questions I always ask that I go over in the podcast so you can copy them and go through them yourself (make sure ou listen to the motivation behind each question though)

I've written them down for diet and exercise but you can apply this to any goal!

1; Have you ever done any form of diet/exercise before and what did you enjoy about it?
2: What are your diet/fitness goals? i.e. Lose X amount of weight, be stronger, complete a marathon etc.
3: Why are these your goals? i.e. Why do you want to lose this specific amount of weight?
4: On a scale of 1-10; how determined are you to reach your goals?
5: When do you want to achieve these goals by? Be as specific with your date as possible.
6: How much time are you realistically willing and able to spend in an effort to achieve your goals?
7: What obstacles can you think of that might prevent you from reaching your goals? i.e. big   events coming up, work deadlines, nights out, dietary knowledge etc.
8: On a scale of 1-10; How confident are you that you can achieve your goals? And why do you feel this level of confidence?
9: What assistance would you most benefit from? (This is in bold for a reason!!)

Are you one of the millions of people who suffer from a Binge Eating disorder? Or are you like me when it comes to certain foods you just eat it all even if you don't really feel like it anymore? This episode is for you!

This week I had the pleasure of being joined by Dr Glenn Livingston, who has a fascinating story and a tremendous amount of expertise when it comes to binge eating recovery.

Disillusioned by what traditional psychology had to offer overweight and/or food obsessed individuals, Dr. Livingston spent several decades researching the nature of bingeing and overeating via work with his own patients AND a self-funded research program with more than 40,000 participants. Most important, however, was his own personal journey out of obesity and food prison to a normal, healthy weight and a much more lighthearted relationship with food.

We are talking about many things; he takes us through his journey and his recovery, about working on the other side of the aisle and now having had a million readers of his book.

How his system works; What is the "inner-pig" and how do you beat your food demons?

Basically he tells us how you can recover PERMANENTLY from a binge eating disorder, and it's NOT by going on yet another diet!

You can find Glenn, and his system, on all forms of social media;

On his website; https://www.neverbingeagain.com/ where you can also get a FREE copy of his book!

In the news this week This interesting little article on the BBC website talking about saturadted fat in dairy not being as bad as some thought it was. This won't exactly come as news to those who pay attention to diet (and cultural habits around the world) so I talk a bit about the issue with studies into food and health related issues and the amount of time it take them to filter through into the mainstream (including the NHS). Here is a link to the study BTW>

Dispelling fitness and health myths

45 min Transcript

Send us Fan Mail

This week it's just little old me again and because it's almost the end of the year, and it's been a while since I've done one of these, I'm clearing up health and fitness myths.

First I go over the idea of somato-types (body-types such as ectomorph, endomorph and mesomorph) and whether that affects your diet and training. Has the idea of body-types really been debunked, as some claim?

Do you "need to make sure you get protein with every meal"? And what exactly does that actually mean? 5oz of beef or chicken, as some people recommend?

Should you have breakfast every day to "kickstart your metabolism"?

Should you, or should you not, have carbs later in the day?

What about "boosting your immune system" by taking certain supplements?

And is a 30-minute brisk walk really enough exercise to keep you healthy?

No in the news this week as there really wasn't that much being reported, but I do talk a bit about the next few episodes.

The micro-biome with Dr Yug Varma

 This week I'm talking to Dr Yug Varma about the micro-biome.

As regular listeners will know I am very interested in the micro- and gut biome and there is no better person to speak to about this stuff than Dr Varma.

He has 10+ years of microbiome research experience including an extensive background in
bio-organic chemistry, microbiology, and synthetic biology. Dr. Varma received his scientific
training at several distinguished academic institutions, including Johns Hopkins University (PhD) and University of California, San Francisco. His scientific work has been published in many prestigious journals, including Nature.

In other words, this is THE guy to talk to about the micro-biome and I'm very grateful he gave up an hour of his valuable time to talk to me about this.

We discussed many things;

What the micro-biome is.

How our current haircare and washing routines are often working against it.

How taking care of your micro-biome is actually very simple and not at all expensive.

The causes of a lot of skin care problems and why soo many more parents and children are having eczema and acne.

Why a lot of skincare products that claim to have "pro-biotics" in them are just using the phrase for marketing purposes and you're actually just smearing yoghurt on your face.

And much, much more.

You can find Dr Varma, and Phylabiotics here;

Twitter: phylabiotics

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/phylabiotics/

YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC3ZzSy1ZuEzGFfsmG8fve8Q/

In the News This week; This article from the NYtimes which founds that the Covid virus seems to be attacking fat tissue directly, which might explain how some obese people (or "skinny fat" people) have been getting really ill with Covid/Long Covid. This is the study they're talking about

This week I have the pleasure of talking to  Julieanna Hever, MS RD CPT.  aka the plant based dietitian

She's the author of no fewer than 6 (!!) books with number 7 on the way!
She's also the host of the "Choose you now" podcast and it's very safe to say that she really knows what she's talking about.

We talk all things plant-based, starting with what we mean by a "plant-based diet" (because it's not the same as vegan)
What a healthy plate of food actually looks like.
Then we talk the benefits of a plant-based diet and how to transition to a more plant-based diet if you're not currently getting your fruits and veggies.
How easy it actually is to just eat a bit less meat and add more veg to your life whilst keeping it very tasty.
Why the "all or nothing" approach just doesn't work when dealing with a change in diet.
Why cooking your own meals is key when your goal is to be healthy.

And much much more.

No "In the News This week" segment because the news is all wrapped up in Omicron but I did quickly want to talk about one of the most important things a post-partum/diastasis recti personal trainer should ask their clients and which they often don't. This week I'm talking to one of the most, if not THE most, enthusiastic running coaches and trainers out there;

Jessica Marie Rose Leggio from RunPainFreeNow.com
In addition to having  qualifications and experience coming out the wazoo, she really cares about women's health and injury prevention and that passion comes through in everything she talks about.

In one of the most enjoyable conversations I have had on the podcast, we spoke for about an hour about how to get back into running safely when you're post-partum.

How long before you can start back up?
What are the things you should be focusing on first.
Why muscle activation is at the basis of every good post-partum/rehab program.
Why the psoas muscle is soo ridiculously important, and yet too often ignored by coaches and trainers.
Why foamrolling is the number one thing every runner should do post-partum (but make sure you do it properly!!!)

And much, MUCH, more.

Jessica's FREE webinar www.runpainfreenow.com/free-training

 Her new book; www.runpainfreenow.com/book Even I am getting myself a copy of this, and I HATE running!! This book is guaranteed to be worth it's weight in gold in terms of knowledge

In the News this week; I took it from the IHCAN editor's note but the paper listed in this Guardian article is fascinating, if slightly depressing, reading. 1 in 10 of all medications prescribed in England are NOT necessary and a lot more medication is prescribed when lifestyle changes would be significantly more beneficial. I don't think this comes as a schock to anyone familiar with the NHS but it does highlight the need for change.

 This week I'm talking about stupid things people do to heal their diastasis recti.

From bellybinders and Peloton bikes to do Instagram workouts and asking your GP for surgery on the NHS.
As my teachers always used to tell me "You're only wasting your own time" and time is that one resource we only have a limited supply of. The longer you mess about trying things that just don't work the more difficult you'll make it to recover when you finally try the things that do.

In the News this week; Have you ever been told that losing weight is impossible in the long run? Well, this study tells us why people fail. It has nothing to do with it being impossible to keep weight off. It's all about people not being given the guidance they need once the weight is off and by people not paying attention to their diet anymore after a few years. (And by diet I don't mean weightloss, I mean what they eat)

The problem with NMN as recommended by David Sinclair.

45 min Transcript

Send us Fan Mail

 This week I was asked a very interesting question;

One of my clients is reading "Lifespan" by David Sinclair. In it he states that he takes NMN and that "everybody should" (or words to that effect).

So she asked me what I thought about NMN and which, of the many supplier's, NMN she should be buying.

So I have looked into the NMN studies, the people that tend to promote it and why a "scientific" author saying things like "you should buy X supplement" is just not kosher.

I will take you through one or two studies, and various websites, and really dissect them to show you where the problem with this entire field really lies. And at the end of that, I will tell you whether you should indeed be spending hundreds of $ on this "magic" supplement.

Some of the websites below.

 This week it's just little old me again for 30 minutes.

I'm talking about various things that we haven't had time to cover in the past few weeks.

A saying I like; "Yesterday starts tomorrow, tomorrow starts today".

Are you being held back by shitty planning? One of the biggest mistakes people make when planning change is that they don't plan it properly at all. If you want change tomorrow you'll have to start today.

Are you being held back by shit from your past that you still have to deal with? Why is that delaying change now??

I'm also going over some of the benefits and down sides to following a Keto diet. After last week's big post-partum diet Q&A I had some questions about this so we might as well tackle the whole thing :)

And we're talking the difference between online programs and real life PT. Why even James Smith can be wrong sometimes.

 "In the news this week"  I'm briefly talking Portugal and COVID. Why Porutgal clearly shows how important it is to get vaccinated andjust to continue wearing a mask where it's sensible.

Here are some articles you might want to read on that particular subject as it really is mindblowingly clear.

Wall Street Journal

NY Times

Travelmedia (because it's not firewalled)

The big post-partum diet Q & A with Libby Mills

 This week we're answering your post-partum diet questions, with a very special guest;

Spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics; Libby Mills (MS, RDN, LDN, FAND). She's giving you expert answers to the questions you sent in.

Some of the questions you put to her are;

Is the KETO diet safe to do when you're breastfeeding?

Can you get enough fiber in your diet if you cut out brown bread/rice etc. if those foods make you bloat?

How can I stop sugar cravings when I'm trying to cut out processed sugar during my pregnancy?

Has my pregnancy, and previous dieting, made my "set-point" go up? And does the body even have a set-point?

How do I eat enough (especially at snacks) without eating too many ultra processed foods, and without giving myself even more to do by preparing fresh food? Especially if I’m already crashing, I need things I can eat quickly and things I can carry with me if I’m out.

What can I do so I am not hungry and tired all the time but also don’t spend too much time cooking/preparing snacks on the weekend?

We also talk a lot about macros (carbs, protein and fats), what a good post-partum diet looks like and she has a lot of tips and easy to grab ideas

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is the world's largest organization of food and nutrition professionals, they have a tonne of great information out there so check them out if you're looking for more information.

Their website https://www.eatrightpro.org/
Follow them on Facebook
And on
Instagram

Libby also hosts her own show on
https://wche1520.com/ called Libby's Luncheonette where she has conversations, eats and tips that focus on our local food system and how sustainable choices can positively affect our personal, community and ecological health and well-being.

And, finally, here are some of the  "Lazy and delicious"  magazine recipes she mentioned!

Don't tell me we don't give you a tonne of expert info on this podcast!!

No "In the news this week" segment in the usual way but I do briefly encourage everyone who is pregnant and hasn't had the vaccine yet to please get it. All the studies show that getting vaccinated when you're pregnant is a good ide as it's completely safe whereas getting severely ill with COVID when you're pregnant really is not.

Here are a couple of studies that should reassure you;

This week I'm talking to Stephanie Olson.

She's the CEO of the Set me Free Project,  a prevention education organization on human trafficking, social media safety, and healthy relationships.

We're talking social media safety;

Is it a good idea to set up a social media account for your baby/toddler?
What is the biggest thing people ignore about social media?
Do you REALLY know everyone you're connected with and giving information to, etc.?

We are also talking human trafficking.

Most human trafficking is nothing like what you see in Liam Neeson movies.
Most trafficking is carried out by people familiar to the child involved.
So what sort of precautions can, and should, we take?
Why is communication with a trusted person soo important for children?
And how can we, as adults, help children who might be at risk?

I loved the whole conversation and definitely learned an awful lot about a subject I thought I had some idea of but it turns out almost everything I thought I knew was wrong.

You can find Stephanie, and the Set Me Free Project here.

In the news this week; This study about the health impacts of "weight-cycling". A common myth heard these days is that intentionally losing weight (dieting) and then gaining that weight again is bad for your overall health and that, actually, you're better off staying at your higher weight. This is nonsense. There is ZERO evidence to show that that is the case and this study from 2014 clearly shows that.

For next week's podcast we will do a "Top dieting myths" episode so, let me know if you have any questions you'd like answered or have heard something silly recently that you want to share.

Remember that I am still looking for people to test to userfriendlyness of our program to people with hearing issues so if you would like to get involved and get FREE lifetime access, just send a little email to peter@healthypostnatalbody.com

This week I'm talking to Debbie Godfrey; The world's "positive parenting" teacher.

Are you fed-up arguing with your kids about doing chores? Done with bed-time dramas every night? Does it seem like you're constantly shouting at your kids and is that affecting the relationship you have with your children?

Well you're in luck because Debbie teaches parents to get results without those things being standard behaviour. And she doesn't want you to be your child's best friend and raise spoiled little things either.

She just has a way of doing things that might avoid the shouting, cursing, tantrums, slamming of doors and fractious relationships and has been teaching parents about this method for years.

I really liked it, it made a lot of sense to me, and I think you'll get a lot out of this episode no matter how old your kids are.

In the news this week This fascinating study about the effects of Omega-3 on brain health and, adversely, the impact of highly processed foods on brain health. This is actually quite a good news study and should have everyone running to their fishmonger or, if you don't eat fish, to the supplement store to pick up some Omega-3 tablets

This week I'm talking to Jenny Toh, she's a life-coach and mother of 3 introverted children. In a lovely, free-flowing conversation we talk about many things including;

The difference between being shy and introverted.
How to communicate with your introverted child in a way that is productive for both sides.
How to help your introverted child flourish in a, seemingly, extroverted world and many other things.

and on the cool Instagram

In the news this week it's HPNB news! We are now solidly on our way to becoming the first post-partum program, as far as I know, that is accessible to people with hearing difficulties. After someone pointed out that there isn't a post-partum program out there that is easily accessible to people with hearing difficulties I decided to get someone to sort that out for us. The first 4 months of the program should now be fully accessible, with all videos having accurate transcriptions, and the rest is being worked on as we speak.

We will also make sure that all new podcasts will have audio transcribed and all that sort of good stuff.

 Every now and again I am extremely lucky and manage to book a guest like Gabriela Rosa (MPH (CLE), MScM(RHHG), BHSc(ND) and many others things beside) for my little podcast.

Gabriela is a world-renowned fertility specialist and, after you've listened to her talking to me for an hour, you'll know that she is the real deal.
A best-selling author of 4 books, a Harvard university awarded scholar, and founder, and clinical director, of the Rosa Institute.

She, very kindly, gave up an hour of her time to talk to me about all things fertility related.

She explains that it takes, on average, 8 (!!!) cycles of IVF for people to fall pregnant.
How you can conceive naturally even after IVF treatments have failed.
That fertility is a team sport.
Why she tells people to "act pregnant to get pregnant".
Why you need a personalised approach when trying to get pregnant, rather than relying on what worked for other people.
How she has achieved a 78% success rate with her method.

And much, MUCH more.

This is one of my favourite interviews ever and I didn't even mind doing it at 1.30AM in the morning.

Gabriela is very kindly offering every listener of the Healthy Post Natal Body podcast a FREE physical edition of her latest book; Fertility Breakthrough; Overcoming infertility and recurrent miscarriage when other treatments have failed. Usually this is $41 so this is very kind indeed. Just enter code "HPNBFREE" at checkout from Monday the 4th of October onwards

Are you making an INTENTIONAL change?

Have you ever started to make a change in lifestyle because "it seemed like a good idea"?

You know; "I want to start losing weight, I'll start Keto on Monday?" or "I'm signing up to a gym and that will get me exercising regularly because ..."I know I should""?

And then later you find out that you weren't actually ready to make the required change/commitment to change yet.

Well, that's what I'm talking about today.  I will take you through the transtheoretical model of change which is something I use with a lot of my "big lifestyle change" clients.
I will talk about what it is, how it works and how you can be successful.

And why, sometimes, you're just better off not changing anything just yet because it will work against you in the long run.

This week I talk about how a post-natal exercise program should be structured, and how to spot a good one from a bad one.

And how to get that lower belly flat again. "How to get rid of that little pouch" as some people phrase it. It's all about breathing correctly and working that one special muscle.

Here is a link to the youtube video of the exercise I describe;

This week I talk about exercise for weightloss.

I have written about this quite often but this study that came out recently shows just how massive a waste of time exercise is IF your main goal is losing weight.

The proof that the more obese you are the more difficult it is to lose weight through exercise.
Why your Personal Trainer has been getting your calorie calculations wrong for years.
And why, even though you've been doing everything right, you still can't lose weight.

If you've ever dieted and you're into exercise you have to listen to this episode as this study is a major breakthrough when it comes to calculating energy consumption and why people have, unknowingly, been getting this wrong for decades!

I am also answering several diet related questions I've had from people including;

How long can you/should you go on a diet for?
Are diets really ineffective 95% of the time?
What is the best post-partum diet?

Every now and again I get to do an interview with somebody that has such a wonderful approach to their profession that makes me question why we ever did something else and accepted it.

This week I had the pleasure of doing one of those interviews.

My guest is Dr Kylie Burton. She is a Dr of Functional Medicine, host of the "Beyond the diagnosis" podcast.

We talk about how getting moved from pillar to post, from Dr to Dr, only to be told that "there's nothing wrong" or "it's because you're a mom" is not acceptable when you're not feeling right.

We discuss auto-immune diseases and how to deal with them in a way that doesn't just cover up symptoms.

We also talk about how to take control and responsibility of your own health simply by being slightly better educated about it. (As an aside, this bit is the bit everyone HAS TO listen to as it just makes soo much sense and it's borderline insane we don't already do this as standard)

You can find Dr Kylie Burton online at https://drkylieburton.com/

On Facebook
She also has her own Youtube channel with loads of excellent videos

Her podcast "
Beyond the Diagnosis" can be found on all the big platforms and is well worth a listen.
And; "In the News this Week"; This article on the BBC about "Buy now Pay later" and how too many people end up being chased by debt collectors when they use this. I have spoken about this before but it's worth repeating. A postpartum exercise program should not come at such a great cost that people can't afford to buy it in one go! Offering "interest free" pay in installment plans is grossly irresponsible. Just make your overpriced program cheaper!

Why GPs don't understand diastasis recti

32 min Transcript

 I talk about GPs and why they often don't understand issues like post-natal back-pain and diastasis recti. It's not because they're stupid!

And; "In the News this Week"; A study I actually came across last week after recording the podcast so want to bring it in now. This study, published in Nature, shows that Fructose in the diet expands the surface of the gut and "nutrient absorption". I'll have a little read through it and explain why this is important. Apologies in advance for this bit, I made quite the mess of reading this thing and am not always at my most coherent :)

More diastasis recti myths than you can shake a stick at.

This week I'm talking about some silly, inaccurate and downright stupid things I have had sent my way this week.

Courtesy of Jess, without whom I would have significantly less to talk about and get loads less done, I bring you the following myths;

1; Diastasis Recti is a life long condition.
2; You can completely close the gap between your stomach muscles.
3; Having a gap between your stomach muscles ALWAYS means you have diastasis recti.

4; A flat stomach means you don't have diastasis recti.
5; You can never get a flat stomach again post-partum.
6; Some people can never get a flat stomach no matter what they do.

7; You should avoid twisting your body if you have diastasis recti.
8; Some exercises will always make diastasis recti worse.
9; Some exercises will heal ANY diastasis recti.

10; Diaphragmatic breathing is the correct way to breathe to heal diastasis recti.

And, of course, diastasis recti can not be healed with exercise and diet.

I'm going over 3 big studies that came out about health recently

There's this one that shows that Ultraprocessed foods now comprise 2/3rds of kids and teens diet.

Then there is a FASCINATING one about fasting and whether that can ward off infections and inflammation. This is especially interesting for people with auto-immune diseases but it even throws the old "You have to eat or you won't get better" adage a lot of parents use out of the window. If you have a child that gets sick this is definitely something you should be interested in.

And, finally, there is this one that looks at accelerated aging and postpartum sleep loss. And don't think of that "accelerated aging" as just looking older. We're talking health impact as well.

I interview Rachel Podnos O'Leary,  author of "21st Century Wealth" a book specifically written for millennials because the financial landscape they face is so different from old-timers like myself :)

Rachel is a Certified Financial Planner, a licensed attorney and member of the Florida bar.

Her book is an amazingly straightforward, but extremely useful, read.

Rachel saw that the financial planning landscape for millennials is fundamentally different than for any other generation that has come before. Between unprecedented student loan debt and income levels that have lagged behind those of previous generations, building wealth as a millennial can seem like a daunting, confusing, and often impossible feat.

Rachel’s no-nonsense personal finance guide, she shows you how to achieve financial independence, no matter your starting point. With tips on how you can build wealth through cash flow planning, debt reduction, investing, and strategic tax planning, you’ll learn how to leverage time and money as your most precious resources. Whether you’re working on paying down student loans or wondering how to invest your 401(k), this simple guide has the answers you need.

You can buy the book on

 Apple books
The Audio book is on
Audible
Of course it's also on
Amazon UK and Amazon US

I read the entire book from start to finish and my review was "This will be the best $10 you will ever spend" but listen to the podcast first and find out why.

You can find Rachel on LinkedIn or Twitter

Domestic violence with Christina Hoag

52 min

Peter interviews Christina Hoag, author of "Girl on the brink".

Girl on the brink is an engrossing, yet educational, novel about a teen romance going horribly wrong. It's a must read for anyone with children and then hand it over for them to read.

Christina also talks about her own experience as someone who was in, and got out of, an abusive relationship.

We talk about red flags; how easy it is to miss, or misinterpret, them.
Why it's a good idea to teach girls about this sort of thing at a younger age, when they start their dating lives.
And why it's important to remove the stigma surrounding domestic violence by talking about it.

An INSANE OFFER for all UK based listeners!

Christina's  website is https://ChristinaHoag.com

Christina has free audiobook review copies of her Girl on Brink. If anyone would like one, sign up for her (infrequent!) newsletter on her website and she’ll email you a promo code redeemable on Audible UK. All that’s required is to have an Audible account, free to create.

Pelvic Girdle Pain

44 min Transcript

Send us Fan Mail

Peter talks pelvic girdle pain this week. It's something a LOT of women suffer from post-partum and it's often just lived with rather than resolved.

This is often because women are not told  what to look out for and therefore report any issues quite late on. Getting to your doctor, to be referred to a pelvic floor physio, is essential and doing this as soon as possible will be a real help and make resolving, or at least living with, PGP a lot easier.

We're talking the causes and the solutions in an effort to get to the bottom of Pelvic Girdle Pain and help you get some help.

"In the News this Week"  2 studies. Good news, bad news. Yin and Yang, if you will.

The first
shows that extreme obesity lowers life expectancy by 14 (!!) years...or does it? and the second that shows that high-levels of Omega 3s can INCREASE life expectancy by 5! And that second one really does, so go eat your oily fish..you rascal!

"I never had diastasis recti after my first pregnancy but my second was really bad"

Does this sound familiar?

Peter talks about why many women feel that their diastasis recti was significantly worse during/after their second pregnancy and why it was disastrous after their 4th.

This seems to be down to a fundamental misunderstanding about what diastasis recti actually is and how the body deals with it.

Of course, the solution is  simple so Peter will discuss that AND will again make a plea for this sort of thing to be discussed in ante-natal classes.

I interview Rebecca Donsky who loves tricky sleepers so much she specialises in them!

Rebecca is a certified sleep consultant who runs Littlemonstersleepsolutions.com in New York. Don't worry if you're not in New York, she also does virtual consults and support.

This is the woman you go to when your two year old just refuses to settle.

We are talking;

The top 3 things to do when it comes to establishing a good sleep pattern for even the trickiest little monster. Here is a link to the blog Rebecca mentions during this segment.

How to handle changes to routines.

The importance of treating each child as an individual.

The importance of setting boundaries (and sticking to them)

And more stuff that you're going to love!

You can find Rebecca at
littlemonstersleepsolutions.com
On Facebook
Little Monster Sleep Solutions
And Instagram littlemonstersleep

Make sure you give her a like and a follow!

We also have a sleep related "In the News this Week" about
this study (News article with the summary can be found here) . I couldn't get into the full paper but one or two things from the abstract are quite interesting.

 An episode where I just spend time answering your questions again.

You have been very kind and emailed in, sent DMs and all that sort of fun stuff so I have a chance to answer them all.

As always email Peter@healthypostnatalbody.com if you have any questions you'd like answered.

We're covering the following questions this week.

How often should I train each week?

How do I get enough protein in? Egg whites vs whole eggs and supplements.

WTF is your problem with body positivity? This is an interesting question as I don't have a problem with it 😂😂😂 but this person is very upset with me.

How do I get rid of my post-partum pelvic tilt?

My Dr said my Diastasis won't heal without surgery as it's too bad. I can't have the surgery until I am done having kids though. Will exercise do any good at all?

Send us Fan Mail

Peter talks about supplements (Vit D, protein powders, Quercetin etc. etc. Should you take them or are they useless?

For those of you who like to read;
This is an interesting opinion piece about Vit D whereas Peter has written about protein supplementation before and you can find that here.

He also talks about "How to find the time to exercise" when it comes to rehab exercise.

And, finally, briefly talks about why thinking that a 4-week program can get better results than a well-designed 12 week program is nothing short of delusional.
