In an episode Jess suggested calling "The minority report" (j/k); Peter talks about diastasis recti in men, the causes and solutions. He has the example of a ballet dancer that emailed him a few years ago that he worked with.

And how to fix diastasis recti when you're in a wheelchair.
Most, if not all, programs dealing with diastasis and post-partum issues tend to be focussed on able-bodied people. HPNB is also guilty of this TBH so we're going to sort that this month. Peter discusses how you can heal diastasis recti, and prevent further core problems, when you have no/limited use of your legs or are used to being in a wheelchair.

In the news this week; this study that shows that simple dietary changes and adopting lifestyle alterations, including improved sleep schedules, taking probiotics, and exercising, can reduce signs of biological aging by three years in just eight weeks

Peter waffles about calories, macros and food quality. Which matters more??

This seems to be an age-old discussion online and is one of those areas that the fitness industry, deliberately, overcomplicates.
So Peter will answer the questions about this once, and hopefully, for all.
He talks about eating for health, eating for weightloss, eating for performance and all those things.

In the news this week; This program on the BBC about the effects of ultra-processed foods on the human body and the brain. It's called "What are we feeding our kids" and it's quite a nice little watch, if you're interested in that sort of thing (And you really should be).
Peter mentions that its a bit disappointing to see an obesity expert and a Dr both pretend to be shocked that junk-food is addictive but he hopes that was just a bit of show for the program.

Peter waffles, very passionately, his way through another episode talking about;

When can diastasis recti be diagnosed?
Some are suggesting DR can't properly be diagnosed until a year post-partum. Peter explains why it is a mistake to say so and leads to bigger problems down the line. He gets VERY passionate about this one.

Why the government's new "obesity drive" is missing the point.
After a long discussion with somebody about the new obesity drive by Boris Johnson, Peter explains why he believes there is almost no benefit to a pre-watershed advertising ban and he thinks that government policy should stop being catered towards the lowest common denominator.

In the news this week; This study about the effects of alcohol on brainhealth.  I know it's not a fun subject but it's quite an important one and I reckon more people should know about this.

After last week's internet problems, we have a triumphant return (If I do say so myself)

Peter talks about setting goals and what the single most important question is that most people forget to ask; What are you willing to give up? Has your PT/ coach/boss told you what you need to do to achieve your goals?

He also touches on a "I am qualified so I am an expert" discussion he had with somebody this week.
Just because somebody has studied something that doesn't mean they're any good at their job. We all know that one useless person in the office, why would you think Drs/personal trainers/ dieticians etc. are any different? And what can you do to make sure you don't end up working with the wrong person?

In the news this week; Another book about health by a doctor, an A&E doctor this time.Peter talks about the problems with books and articles by people such as this. Nothing against the Dr, I'm sure he's amazing, but the book is a waste of money.

"Where to start when you want to start exercising again after a long time if you have no diastasis but are just a little bit unfit?"

How long should you spend in the gym?
What sort of exercises should you do?
Should you lift light or heavy?
How intense should it be?
And how long should you do cardio for?

Here's a little link to a download of that 7th heaven session Peter spoke about. No email address, no signup required.

12 kinds of hunger?

Peter waffles about the dietary-theory of 12 kinds of hunger. Is this legit or is this just a whole bunch of psychobabble to make weightloss sound more complicated than it really is?

He's also talking about "exercise for weightloss".
Gyms are opening up again in Scotland and a LOT of women have been emailing in asking what the best exercise for weightloss is.
He explains why exercising for weightloss is a collosal waste of time.

Can exercise make diastasis worse?

24 min Transcript
View

Send us Fan Mail

Yet another podcast where a large chunk of it is taken up by Peter talking about Diastasis Recti.

There seems to be a BIG misconception about whether exercise can make your diastasis recti worse or not.
Some studies are now claiming that "No, certain exercises (sit-ups/crunches etc) can not make DR worse." whereas the commonly held "belief" said that they can.

Peter talks about exactly what the problem is here;
The DEFINITION of diastasis recti is not broad enough.

As Peter explains; ALL exercise can make diastasis worse. And, at the same time, NO exercises can actually make diastasis worse.
It all depends on how you perform the exercises and what you actually class as diastasis recti.

The definition of diastasis recti, as used by a lot of post-natal personal trainers and physios, does not go far enough and is not broad enough. If you do not include muscle functionality in your definition you're missing a massive, and very important, chunk of what diastasis recti actually is. And this is what causes some people to not see any results when they try a post-partum program.

This, once again, is the difference between working with a geniune expert and "someone who also does post-natal stuff".

In the news this week; Peter touches on the tragedy with Peloton treadmills.
In case you were not aware, these things are NOT safe to be used around small children or animals. In fact, Peter thinks Peloton is irresponsible for not issuing a warning to all their users and giving all their customers the option of a refund or a fix.

Peter had an extra coffee this afternoon and it really shows.

He waffles, at a million words per minute, about "above navel diastasis recti". Basically this is where you do not have a gap below the belly button but you do above it.

This in response to a couple of emails about it this week where members with above navel DR had some questions;

Why do we/should we still work the lower part of the core when the gap is mainly above the bellybutton?
Should we treat above navel DR differently from below navel or open DR?
Can above navel be healed in the same way that open DR can?

etc.

Peter talks about all this and explains why a "well-thought-out" post-natal program will help with this whereas "diastasis safe" workouts are likely to make it worse rather than better and why a poorly thought-out post-natal program won't help it at all.

In the news this week;
This article on the BBC. Essentially it's about a report  from the Women and Equalities Committee. In it they urge the scrapping of BMI as a measurement which Peter believes is a mistake. The problem with BMI, as he sees it, is not with BMI as a measurement but with the people applying it as a strict measurement of health. Peter argues that BMI is a pretty decent indicator of expected health BUT that it just shouldn't be the sole one. So the problem is with the doctors/medical professionals applying it rather than the measurement itsself. He also argues that this incorrect application of BMI, and fake pictures on the internet, is responsible for a psychological problem with the measurement rather than the actual BMI tool.

Tonight Peter waffles about consistency and perseverance. He was talking to someone this week who had tried 2 post-partum exercise programs in the past year and neither had given her any results with her diastasis recti. A lot of the diastasis recti support forums are full of women with the same experience.

And the problem for these ladies is almost inevitably the same. So Peter talks about that and has the solution, explaining why Consistency and Perseverance are the two most important things when it comes to any sort of rehab exercise.

He also talks about weightlifting with Diastasis Recti. Can you/should you lift heavy things? How heavy can you safely go? How can you make sure you're lifting safely? When can you start lifting things?

In the news this week; Just loads of crappy studies, and depressing news articles about subjects we spoke about before so we're leaving that for this week :)

Tonight Peter responds to a question he had about "Intuitive Eating".

One of his clients has been trying this "diet" for a while, after buying the book about it, but can't seem to get it right and is even gaining weight.
Peter explains the problem with Intuitive Eating for weightloss and what you can do to do it successfully, without spending money on the book!

He also talks about the bullshit artists in the wellness world after an experience he had with a prospective guest this week. So how can you weed out the nonsense-peddlers?

In the news this week;

It's the 100th episode of the Healthy Post Natal Body podcast and boy is Peter waffling through this episode!

Tonight Peter discusses the importance of hydration, and what to drink, and diet for post-natal recovery..including diastasis recti. Why a PERSONALISED approach is key to good post-natal health.

In the news this week; Language matters.
There is only one story in the news in the UK this week and that is the tragic murder of Sarah Everard. On the back of this a lot has been made about the language we use every day and it's something Peter has spoken about in the past, but on a different subject.
So we're back on the "language matters" subject today, because it really does.

We love a good Q&A session and you have responded with some excellent questions when we asked you a couple of days ago.

Peter does his biggest Q and A session yet;

How can I speed up my post-natal recovery?
How to spot a good post-natal exercise program, and how to spot a bad one.
Do you need to take fitness supplements during pregnancy or postpartum?
Is a 28-day challenge a good idea for someone who only recently gave birth?
Why you shouldn't run before you can walk...or indeed hold your pee in.
When can I REALLY start to train after a C-section and what should I start with?
I have Diastasis Recti from my last birth and am pregnant again. Is it safe?
I am doing a lot of core work why is my Diastasis Recti not improving?
I healed my DR now I want to lose weight but increase my musclemass. Can I do both at the same time?

In the news this week; No consensus on why exercise works
for chronic back pain?

If you suffer from lower back-pain you might want to hang around for this bit. A review of many studies has found that, despite decades of studies, scientists still can't agree on WHY exercise works for lower back-pain. Peter will go through why this is important to remember because not all back-pain is created equal.

We love a good Q&A session and you have responded with some excellent questions when we asked you a couple of days ago.

Peter does his biggest Q and A session yet;

Peter interviews Catherine O’Brien a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and the founder of HappyWithBaby.com

She's the author of Happy With Baby: Essential Relationship Advice When Partners Become Parents.

She also acts as a California state co-coordinator for Postpartum Support International and also helped to establish A Mother’s Heart in Sacramento, where mothers with perinatal and anxiety disorders go to receive support. Additionally, she participates in the Sacramento Maternal Mental Health Collaborative.

In short; she has qualifications and experience coming out the wazoo!

We are talking about the difference between expectations and the reality of the relationship between parents once the baby is there.

Things like;

We have a great relationship, how hard could adding a baby to this be?

The feeling of "grief" for your old life. That it's quite natural but can make you feel really guilty at the same time.

How every parent has their own learning curve when it comes to dealing with a baby and how important taking that into account is. There is no set "right or wrong" way to do many things and many parents can have a different approach from each other.

How to negotiate that part of your parenting relationship and not have that negatively impact the relationship between the parents.

She has some tremendous insight into what you can do to keep the relationship going well, and even improve on it post-partum.

Once you've listened to the podcast I strongly recommend joining Catherine's FREE online Facebook community where she provides weekly Facebook Lives with practical tips and encouragment for new parents, as well as interviews with experts.

As you'd expect Catherine can be found on all Social Media platforms

www.facebook.com/happywithbaby

www.instagram.com/happywithbaby

So check them out as well.

Peter interviews Rebecca Michi. Rebecca is a sleep consultant with some tremendous insights into how to get your children to sleep better.

We are talking everything from early post-natal sleep to sleep training when they get a bit older.

Is there such a thing as "a good or a bad" sleeper?
What is actually realistic for a young baby?
Why the first 12 weeks are not the time to start sleep training.
How your child's temperament affects their sleep and how you can help them sleep better by taking this into account.
How not every child needs the same amount of sleep.
And how, if you're happy with how your child is sleeping, you don't have to change anything.

In the News this week; If you read any papers at all you'll likely have come across stories like these "Overweight later in life can prolong longevity" In the Telegraph and various other news outlets (ABS, NBC etc.)

The study they refer to is this one; and the conclusion the media seem to have taken from this is completely wrong. Peter will go through why the media's "interpretation" is flawed and why you can usually ignore the media when it comes to interpretations of studies.

You can find Rebecca on Facebook and Instagram, by checking out https://childrenssleepconsultant.com/ where you will find loads of great resources or by going the SlumberAcademy website

Peter interviews Heather Vickery, a success and leadership coach and host of The Brave Files podcast.

She is a mother of 4 (!!!) daughters and author of 2 gratitude books/journals; Gratitude Journal "Shift your focus" and Grow Grateful; "A gratitude journal for kids and families" which you can find  on Amazon.

Almost more important than that; she is one of those rare people that you can listen to for 30 minutes and immediately feel better at the end of it.

We are talking how to prevent yourself getting stuck in the "mum role", or indeed get out of that role once you are stuck in it.
We also hit on how it's OK, indeed necessary, to put yourself first sometimes (or at least take care of yourself)

And the tremendous power of gratitude. Heather shares one or two great tips on how you can feel better by just making small changes to the way your approach life and the language you use.

And, because she is ridiculously kind, she has thrown in a goodie for you lovely HPNB podcast listeners;

The first person that emails her and mentions the show will get a 30-minute 1:1 session. The email is heather@vickeryandco.com

If you loved listening to this episode and want to know more about Heather she has a FREE Facebook community www.facebook.com/groups/BraveOnPurpose

Peter interviews Jordan Klein, a doula with a passion for education about everything pre- and post-natal.

As Jo says; the "mistake" most women make when they are pregnant is thinking that they will be told everything they need to know, and this is just not the case.

So, for you lucky people, she's agreed to come on to the Healthy Post natal Body podcast and chat to yours truly.

What should every woman know about the pre- and post-natal journey? What is the reality of pregnancy, and the labour process, versus what most women think is going to happen.

What are the benefits of having a doula guide you through your pregnancy and labour.
What is currently missing from most pre-natal classes and how do different hospitals have different procedures?

It's a very enlightening chat and, if you are currently expecting (or indeed are planning another addition to the family) this is well worth a listen.

You can follow Jo on TikTok or Instagram where she shares a TONNE is information in very handy and fun-to-follow videos by searching @jothemama

Peter interviews Guang Ming Whitley author of Zuo Yuezi: An American Mother's Guide to Chinese Postpartum Recovery.

Zuo Yuezi, also called "sitting the month" is a post-partum recovery approach used in China, and in some form or another in many other countries around the world. There is a lot to this practise that makes sense for a new mum to do.

Guang Ming did this after the birth of her son, her daughter, and her twins and wrote a book about it which is a must read for another wondering if there is a better way to spend the first 30 days post-partum.

In the news this week; This is the sort of thing the British government should be sorting ASAP. It is not acceptable that women should see their kids go without medication because of any new rules. We shouldn't have to smuggle medication across the border like we're living in Gaza, for god's sake.

Also check out episode 91, which ties in nicely with this interview. That was an interview with Doula "Jothemomma" which is a great one to listen to.

Peter interviews Bracha Goetz, author of children's books and an amazing memoir in which she shares her story about dealing with overeating.. Believe me when I say she brings a whole new level of positive energy to the podcast!

We're talking "The 5 levels of pleasure".  A teaching in the Talmud which gives perspective on, and can help with, many things such as over-eating. It's about learning to find true joy in everything and it's a fascinating listen.

We're also talking about the trappings of social media and how to prevent your child falling into the "I want to be famous" trap that seems to be so easy to fall into.

You can find Bracha's amazing books on Amazon. Just click the little link.  Your children will love them!

Peter waffles for 25 minutes talking about why GPs are the last people to listen to about healthy living. Other than that crazy aunt who "doesn't believe in vaccines", of course.

This in response to an email about last week's podcast in which he mentioned that some people, GPs, shouldn't be writing books about healthy eating and living.

Also, in HPNB podcast related news; Peter is doing a TONNE of interviews over the next few weeks with various experts and specialists so keep your eyes out for those episodes coming up.

In the news this week
, other than the obvious Trump related stuff, there was this litte "nugget" about teachers being at much higher risk of catching Covid than the general population. And it's worth reminding pregnant, and newly post-partum women why being extra careful is a good idea.

Peter waffles, and rants, for a whole 36 minutes talking about how the health and fitness industry is designed to make you fail, and how to avoid falling into those traps.

From, "You need to exercise 3 x 1hr a week" which you hear in all gyms, to "Buy my weightloss book because I'm a GP", "Veganuary" and "28 day challenges", he's covering everything in this episode.

"In the news this week"; It's the first week of the New Year so all the papers are filled with weightloss books and diet books. Usually from people whose books you really don't need to buy.

He goes through  this terribly headlined article by Dr Rangan Chatterjee or this outrageously ridiculous nonsense peddled as SMART by Dr Michael Mosley.

If you are looking for a straight-up weightloss thing then Peter has a suggestion for that as well.

The best Youtube Fitness channels

Peter waffles for 25 minutes as he goes through his 3 favourite Fitness Youtube channels.

AthleanX

Redefining Strength

Vahva Fitness

And then he talks briefly about the importance of understanding what your needs and likes are when choosing a coach/personal trainer. As the above channels show, they are all phenomenal at what they do but they also all have a very different approach. the same goes for Personal Trainers you choose to work with. Just because someone has a post-natal certification that doesn't mean they will be the right fit for you.

"In the news this week"; 5G, oh yes, the Telecommunications masts. After reading this article about a British Lib Dem MP ( Wera Hobhouse) joining the mass ranks of the ill-informed Peter couldn't help himself and thought it best to point out why you shouldn't always listen to politicians.

Do Ab-wraps work for healing Diastasis?

"In the news this week";

Peter waffles for half an hour telling the story of "the fat dietician" (her words, not mine) or "giving people advice when you don't follow any yourself" and the trappings of this. How is it unhealthy for YOU to give others advice?.  "Do as I say, not as I do" being one of the most stupid sayings someone can actually utter.

He also talks about the podcast going back to once a week again and the new format!
That's right, we have a format now!

With a new segment called "In the news this week" where the focus is on a health-related story that made the news this week. A little in-depth look where we go through whatever story and answer some questions about that, provide some clarity about it that usually goes missing in the newspapers. Today it's a very brief one on this little article on the BBC website about a report released this week that stated that "summer holidays were a trigger for the second wave" which, to Peter at least, was a real "Like, DUH Obv!" moment.

Why you can't lose weight

26 min

Send us Fan Mail

Peter talks about eating and exercise for weightloss. Why is it soo difficult for people to lose weight by doing what has worked for others? Why is there no one size fits all solution?...or is there? Just not in the way that one diet works for everyone.

Why do people get "intuitive eating" wrong?

It's not complicated, in fact it might be more straightforward than you think, but it does require some effort.

Peter waffles about focus in this episode.

Watching an episode of Cesar Milan's "Dog Whisperer" reminded him to chat about focus as it's something he brings up with his clients a lot but doesn't mention on the podcast too often. So whether you're trying to train a puppy, an old dog or are struggling with your own training/ diet etc. a little bit, this episode is for you.

The importance of NOT focussing on what you want to achieve but instead focussing on what you NEED to do. It's a really important distinction.

We are convering many, many topics tonight.

We're talking expectations Vs reality. What can happen when a pregnancy becomes a difficult one, second child "guilt", post-natal depression and anxiety. The importance of getting help, and where to get it.

It's a very frank and open conversation which is well worth a listen.

Thanks very much to Ashley for coming on and being so open about her own journey. If more women could speak about their experience with this degree of openess and honesty that would really help a lot of people.

Dump the "acceptance mindset"

Peter waffles about many things; He quotes Sebastian Bach (Skid row, not the classical dude) and talks about the problem of an "acceptance mindset".

He had a conversation with a medical professional this week who herself was waiting for a Diastasis Recti surgery on the NHS which was another eye opener when it comes to the strange mindset people find themselves in.

Why, when many thousands of women have shown you it can be done, do you still believe your Diastasis Recti can't be healed through exercise?

He also touches on the difference between "DR safe" and "DR rehab" exercise as they are not the same thing.

and finally he explains why we did not put the "Covid and Pregnancy" blog out earlier. The simple answer is; We were waiting for studies to make sure we were not guessing our way through it.

Gestational Diabetes w Laura

We're talking gestational diabetes with Laura. Laura is a mother of two, a boy and a girl, who had gestational diabetes during both her pregnancies. More than that, she knows A LOT about it and is a very engaging story-teller and therefore you'll want to listen to this one.

So what causes gestational diabetes? What are the symptoms and how is it managed/treated? How does it change your pregnancy journey? And how the severity can escalate from one pregnancy to the next and how the management changes when it's more severe.
We're also talking about what happens when labour is induced as that is something that happens when you have gestational diabetes.

Laura talks us through her entire experience; the good, the not so great and the unexpected benefits that came out of this.

Like I said; It's a very engaging story, well told and the 50 minutes or so will breeze past.

If you think "Hey, I have something to say on a health, or motherhood, related subject" then why not get in touch and be a guest yourself? info@healthypostnatalbody.com is the email address to us.

Peter talks about the US election and how, in this day and age, it's disappointing that soo many people have abandoned decency and kindness as a prerequisite in our political leaders. It also seems to be the way of businesses making decisions and that gave Peter a bit of time to reminisce about why he started up HPNB.

And then, thank goodness, he moved on to HPNB and post-natal things such as 28-day weightloss challenges for post-natal women :)

Stop looking for shortcuts

Peter talks about the problem following everyone on social media and believing all those who have "a secret solution" to your problem. A shortcut  will inevitably lead to a longer recovery.

We're also talking about the uselessness of doing Youtube routines for post-natal recovery, unless something is done in the right order you're not helping yourself.

And he talks about the importance of tackling the main cause of a problem.

Peter talks about the difference between "blame" and "responsibility". After last Sunday's podcast he had a couple of emails from people so he thought he';d better clear that bit up. Someone else can be to blame for the position you find yourself in but that doesn't mean they are responsibile for getting you out.

So there is 10 minutes on that and then he moves on to a great comment he had from another listener from Italy, or Spain, who said that they don't diagnose Diastasis Recti until you're a year post-partum. So when is the best time to diagnose DR?

Covid-19

Peter waffles about Covid-19 and answers one or two questions that are pertinent for pregnant and recently post-natal women.

What, if anything, should those women look out for and do?

He also goes over the new restrictions in Scotland and the rUK (which are never ever the same for some reason) and asks if the new restrictions make sense/are fair.
He's had a look at the evidence paper for Scotland and has one or two comments..mainly suprise at people being surprised that the numbers went back up.

And then we look at the problem all these restrictions pose for mums-to-be and new mums. And it, again, becomes quite clear that the NHS is failing women spectacularly. So what can we do?

Peter waffles about support groups. Is your support group actually holding you back/preventing you from taking action and resolving the issues you're dealing with?

He talks about an experience HPNB had this week which opened our eyes to this particular problem.

Also, Diastasis Recti and back pain..why is the link still not acknowledged as much as it should?

Peter answers 2 questions he came across this week.

The first is;  I’m just at a point where I feel I can start to get into a routine and get on top of my Diastasis recti BUT I’ve just found out I’m pregnant again.

Is there anything is should or should not be doing?

And the second;
Why is my gap getting bigger? Did some physio after my baby pp7 months but now my gap is getting bigger again??

Peter waffles about the uterus and the menstrual cycle. Why should you take your period into account when training?

He also briefly touches on why women should ALWAYS train differently from men. It's not that you shouldn't lift heavy, or train hard, but there are differences.

And he announces the winner of the "mommy needs" competition from Friday. Remember to follow us on Instagram and Facebook for the weekly competitions!

Peter waffles about motivation. The problem with starting something (diet, exercise or anything really) before you're mentally ready to start is that you're very likely to fail in achieving your goal. People who have failed before, because they made a half-hearted attempt the first time, are MUCH more likely to not try again.

So he shares his tips for making sure you're good to start and then keep up that work-ethic.

Peter waffles for 30 minutes about breathing and how it is THE SINGLE most important thing for your post-natal recovery.

He then talks about when you should/can start exercising post-partum. Why the advice to "rest, rest, rest for months" is pretty bad.

And how big is "normal" for a 2 weeks post-partum stomach??
