In another "From the vault" episode I'm revisiting the interview I did with Danielle Sullivan about raising Neurodivergent children.

She's a neurodiversity life coach, autism and disability advocate, autistic mother and host of the Neurodiverging podcast.

We had a tremendous chat about various things to do with either being diagnosed as neurodivergent yourself or raising neurodivergent children.

We covered "What to do if your child gets a neurodivergent (autism, ADHD etc) diagnosis?"
What works and what doesn't work with neurodivergent kids.
How every neurodivergent person is different.
The benefits of having a neurodivergent diagnosis.

And much, much more.

As I say in the podcast, several times: I learnt more in this hour than I could have done spending hours searching online.

You can find Danielle everywhere;

YouTube

In the news this week, I thought I would talk a bit about a study, from Stanford, that came out recently that showed that there is a difference between the brains of boys and girls with autism. Here is a link to the actual paper.

The reason I thought the study was interesting is because it, once again, highlights that women and men are different in physiology and that therefore using the same diagnostics and treatment methods in medicine is flawed. The more we are aware of this the easier it is to improve the health, and experience, of women overall.

In this week's episode I go through the Why, Who, What, When, the Where and the How of post-partum exercise.

Back to basics this week with me talking about the best way to plan your physical post-partum recovery.

Can you prevent diastasis recti by doing the "right things" during your pregnancy?
The quickest way for your body to recover post-partum.
Should you do cardio and, if so, what kind do I recommend people do?
Is HIIT a good idea post-partum? s it really as "unsafe" as people say it is?
Diastasis recovery, how can you speed this up?
What does effective post-partum training actually look like?

In this week's episode I am joined by Personal trainer, gym owner, podcast host and all-round good guy Brad Williams.

California based Brad specialises in working with men and women over 40 and we talk about the differences that he sees in how someone over 40 should eat and train compared to someone in their 20s.

Some of the things we touch on are;

Life is different for the over 40s but how does this impact exercise?
Is it more difficult for someone over 40s to get the same results as someone in their 20s?
Why the hormone levels of the over 40s must be taken into account when training/aiming for certain results.
Should you eat differently past 40?
What food go on his eat or don't eat list?
Which foods should you always try to buy organic?
What supplementation does Brad recommend for someone over 40?

and much, much more.

Check out Brad's amazing "Over 40 fitness hacks" podcast

In this week's episode I answer some of the questions that have come up this week.

I talk about above navel diastasis and how the approach to recovery is slightly different from below navel, or completely open, DR. It's remarkably straightforward but still important to note the difference.

I'm also talking about whether you should wash your baby with soap every day or not.

Hormone therapies, are they an important addition to your health regime and who can you trust to provide them?

And, finally, a study about the importance of wearing a proper bra when exercising. Seriously, get one fitted if you can afford it! The actual research article can be found here

I've been wanting to do an episode on this subject for a VERY long time  so I am delighted to be talking sustainability with John Pabon.

We are all interested in sustainability and the environment but, for many of us, the message around these subjects are confusing, complicated and overall just massively disheartening.
"The world is doomed", "there is no point doing X" or "UNLESS YOU GO VEGAN YOU'RE EVIL!!" are the types of messages we hear all the time but, if you have children, you probably would like to know what you can PRACTICALLY do to help.

John is a globally recognized expert in sustainability. With more than 2 decades of experience in the "saving the planet business", and a whole host of impressive organisations and companies on his CV, he is THE guy to talk to about something like this.

He is also the author of  “Sustainability for the Rest of Us: Your No-Bullshit, Five-Point Plan for Saving the Planet.”
The book has been described as “…a foundational read for practical sustainability in the 21st century” and “…one of the best sustainability resources available to date.”

His second book  “The Great Greenwashing,” is out now for pre-sale.
And, of course, check out his website https://www.johnpabon.com/

John and I discuss many things including;

What, exactly, is sustainability? (Turns out I didn't know what it REALLY was either!"
Is there any point to people doing anything if big corporations are a large part of the problem?
Recycling, is it a waste of time?
Are corporations actually as evil as we think they are?
Why the "shouty environmentalist" is hurting the sustainability message.
You don't need to do everything, just do something.
Some practical things that any person, and small business, can do to really make a big difference.

And much more.

"In the news this week";  This paper about weightloss in old age. Does losing weight really lead to an early death?

In this week's episode I answer some of the questions regarding supplementation that I've recieved over the past month or so.

Are vitamins worth the money?
Do women need to take different vitamins than men? Here is the
pubmed bit I refer to

What about other supplements, protein, quercetin, turmeric etc?

Is a probiotic worth the money, what is a probiotic and how can you spot a "good one" from one that won't do anything at all? Is there a difference between the various kinds of probiotics and is one better than the other?

And finally, Alkaline water and the alkaline diet. Is your body "being acidic" a problem? And, if the alkaline diet works..then why is that?

In an episode "From the vault" we're answering your post-partum diet questions, with a very special guest;

Spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics; Libby Mills (MS, RDN, LDN, FAND). She's giving you expert answers to the questions you sent in.

Some of the questions you put to her are;

Is the KETO diet safe to do when you're breastfeeding?

Can you get enough fiber in your diet if you cut out brown bread/rice etc. if those foods make you bloat?

How can I stop sugar cravings when I'm trying to cut out processed sugar during my pregnancy?

Has my pregnancy, and previous dieting, made my "set-point" go up? And does the body even have a set-point?

How do I eat enough (especially at snacks) without eating too many ultra processed foods, and without giving myself even more to do by preparing fresh food? Especially if I’m already crashing, I need things I can eat quickly and things I can carry with me if I’m out.

What can I do so I am not hungry and tired all the time but also don’t spend too much time cooking/preparing snacks on the weekend?

We also talk a lot about macros (carbs, protein and fats), what a good post-partum diet looks like and she has a lot of tips and easy to grab ideas

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is the world's largest organization of food and nutrition professionals, they have a tonne of great information out there so check them out if you're looking for more information.

Their website https://www.eatrightpro.org/
Follow them on Facebook
And on
Instagram

Libby also hosts her own show on
https://wche1520.com/ called Libby's Luncheonette where she has conversations, eats and tips that focus on our local food system and how sustainable choices can positively affect our personal, community and ecological health and well-being.

And, finally, here are some of the  "Lazy and delicious"  magazine recipes she mentioned!

Don't tell me we don't give you a tonne of expert info on this podcast!!

I also left the "In the news" from that week in;
I do briefly encourage everyone who is pregnant and hasn't had the vaccine yet to please get it. All the studies show that getting vaccinated when you're pregnant is a good ide as it's completely safe whereas getting severely ill with COVID when you're pregnant really is not.

Here are a couple of studies that should reassure you;

This week I answer some more of your questions and comment on some things that cropped up on my radar recently.

First, Does KETO burn more fat? And, if it does, then why does it not matter that it does?

Second, Just doing cardio isn't sufficient for healthy living and post-partum recovery.

Third, How "Just doing something different" can help you get through a plateau but only if you know what you['re doing and why you're doing it.

And, finally, why "All or nothing" usually means nothing.

In a first I'm going "back to the vault" this week!

I've had a lot of questions about going back to running post-partum and that made me decide to do the "unthinkable!" and let you guys enjoy the interview I did with  Runpainfreenow.com's Jessica Marie Rose Leggio.

This was one of the most enjoyable interviews I've done over the past 3 years and Jessica is the go-to person to answer most of the questions you've put to me recently so there is no point in my reinventing the wheel. Sit back, and enjoy!

In addition to having  qualifications and experience coming out the wazoo, she really cares about women's health and injury prevention and that passion comes through in everything she talks about.

In one of the most enjoyable conversations I have had on the podcast, we spoke for about an hour about how to get back into running safely when you're post-partum.

How long before you can start back up?
What are the things you should be focusing on first.
Why muscle activation is at the basis of every good post-partum/rehab program.
Why the psoas muscle is soo ridiculously important, and yet too often ignored by coaches and trainers.
Why foamrolling is the number one thing every runner should do post-partum (but make sure you do it properly!!!)

And much, MUCH, more.

Jessica's FREE webinar www.runpainfreenow.com/free-training

Her new book; www.runpainfreenow.com/book Even I am getting myself a copy of this, and I HATE running!! This book is guaranteed to be worth it's weight in gold in terms of knowledge

You can find the RunPainFree podcast here if you're an Apple user, and here if you're not.
Below are some of the episodes and things we discussed that are well worth listening to.

This week I'm answering some more of your questions and emails,

Will using a bodypillow during pregnancy really lead to greater diastasis recti and hip problems?

Why learning to breathe properly is the single most important thing you can do for your post-partum recovery.

I'm also talking about "doming" again

And finally, why Gisele Bündchen is NOT the person you want to compare your body to when you're post-partum (I can't believe I have to say this but someone asked if I could give them a tummy like Gisele "because she's had 4 kids and looks amazing!!")

Email peter@healthypostnatalbody.com if you have any questions or comments or want me to interview a specific person

This week I have the pleasure of talking to Rebecca Washuta.

Rebecca is a Licensed Dietitian Nutritionist and Health Coach specializing in weight loss and habit formation. She has been featured in a tonne of magazines and news segments and is a great person to talk to about how to take practical steps towards a healthier diet.

We discuss many, many things including;

What the Big 3 formula for creating healthy meals and snacks is.
How if you are hungry within 2-3 hours after eating a meal that means your meal isn't put together properly.
The importance of chosing good quality protein over shitty "extra protein" snacks (such as Pepperamis).
The importance of fibre.
Why meal plans suck.
How almost all pre-packaged foods are horrifically low on fibre and therefor low on satiety.
How to change eating habits successfully.
My dislike of setting the wrong goals, and SMART goals.

And much, much more.

You can find Rebecca in all the places the cool people hang out.

This week I'm answering some more of your questions and emails, covering a rather wide variety of subjects.

What are my top 3 tips for a successful, and fast, post-partum recovery?

Why resistance training for your upperbody is key if you want to recover post-partum. (And why there is a lot of it in the HPNB program)

The importance of "dynamic training" rather than the standard "up and down" type of training you see in most post-partum programs.

This week I'm delighted to be joined by Dr Heather Hausenblas

Heather has a PhD in the science of health psychology.
She is a health psychology expert, international award-winning scientist, public speaker, and best-selling author.

Her research focuses on how our health habits effect our well-being. In particular, how our diet, exercise, sleep, and supplementation effects our overall health.
And, to top this off, she's ranked in the top 1% of the most influential scientists in the world.

Dr Hausenblas obtained her PhD from Western University in Canada. Was a faculty member and the Director of the Exercise Psychology Lab at the University of Florida, and has served as a Scientific Advisor for nutrition, supplement, and health companies.

She currently is a Professor of Health Sciences at Jacksonville Universityand is also the CEO and Founder of Wellness Discovery Labs, a health behavior research company.
AND, as if that wasn't impressive enough,  so is the co-founder of Healthy Moves Journaling, a wellness company that focuses on small changes for big health improvements.

In short, you're not going to find a more qualified person to talk to about making healthy changes and how to go about improving your health in a sustainable way.

We discuss many things including;

Why is making healthy lifestyle changes so difficult when you're pregnant or newly post-partum?

Why exercise is important for your post-partum recovery and how is safe to do.

Why keeping up exercise during pregnancy is key to being active post-partum.

Women who's exercise levels drop during pregnancy hardly ever become active again post-partum, so how to prevent this.

How you exercising is important for your health AND YOUR BABY'S!

How can healthcare professionals motivate people to exercise more/eat healtier?
Why your doctor should "prescribe exercise".

The importance and benefits of journalling (and why you don't need an expensive gadget to track your health habits)

And much, much, MUCH more.

"In the news this week"; This study, which shows that male alcohol consumption has a significant impact on fertility.  Obviously we have discussed this on previous podcasts before but it's always nice to point out the obvious. The PDF of the study is at the bottom of the link

BTW, as a TLDR; the study refers to long-term alcohol use, not a couple of beers on the weekend :)

This week I'm delighted to be joined by Daniel Sih.

Daniel is an award winning author and productivity expert and has written a tremendous book called "Raising Tech-Healthy Humans".

It's a practical handbook to help parents reset their children's tech-habits and give them a great start to life.

If you're concerned about your kid's social media/phone/tablet habits then this is the interview to listen to!

We're talking about many things including;

How to get an 8-year old off a tablet is a different process from teaching a 4-year old to use devices sensibly.
The difference between "lean-back" and "lean-in" technology and why it really matters.

How YouTube on the television is completely different from family movie night.
Why family technology time is a positive whereas spending time on the phone maybe isn't.
How to spot when your kid's tech-habits are becoming a problem.
How the technology, and social media, is DESIGNED to keep your child online so you as a parent have to be aware of what you're really up against.
YouTube is different when you're not signed in!
The physical, and developmental, effects of certain tech on your child.

The easiest ways to progress your child through the different forms of technology, and why you should slowly build up their exposure rather than just giving them access all in one go.

And much, MUCH, more

Daniel is a tremendous speaker and is very knowledgeable on this subject, if you're at all interested in what YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and everybody else online is doing to make sure your child is an avid consumer of their products, and how to make sure you teach your kids to use these tools properly,  you will want to listen to this.

 Download a Tech-Parenting Resource Pack
with free infographics, checklists, conversation guides, digital contracts, expert interviews and more.

You can find Daniel's book here and connect on Facebook here

Why vaginal health matters much more than people think it does.
Whether you should use special soap or not

This week I take the time to respond to your questions.

We've had some great podcast guests on this month and you've sent in a few emails on the back of it which I will answer.

So what am I talking about;

Is diastasis an adaptation and can we just ignore it until you feel there is an issue?

Is muscle activation something that you should focus on at all?

Why I use different language than Antony does.

Should you REALLY never stretch or is that not really what Aaron said.

Why is back-pain still soo poorly understood and often ignored.

Can I get surgery for my diastasis and will that resolve my back pain?

and much, much more.

This week I have the pleasure of being joined by David Jeter who is an awesome physical therapist. We're talking post-partum back-pain and the benefits of physical therapy and exercise generally.

We discuss many, many things including;

What is post-partum back pain and what causes it?
Is surgery THE solution?
Why is post-partum backpain soo often ignored by both the medical community and those suffering from it?
Why are people not aware just how effective physical therapy is to deal with back-pain?
How the PT community is doing a terrible job of promoting the benefits of exercise and is spending too much time selling cheap-tricks.
And how you can help yourself if you're suffering from any sort of muscle related pain.

In the news this week, this article from the American Association for Cancer Research which demonstrates nicely how certain myths don't die out.

I hear the following phrase a lot in my daily life "A glass of red wine a day is good for you" and it's just not true,
ALL types of alcohol raise the risk of certain cancers, which is something to be aware of.
HOWEVER...That doesn't mean drinking gives you cancer..stuff like this isn't black and white.

Why stretching, and most warm-ups, before training simply does NOT make sense.
Why we should ban saying "Listen to your body".

This week I have the pleasure of being joined by Antony "The Physio Detective" Lo.

You'll have heard me mention Antony before, he is one of my favourite people in the post-partum fitness space, he clearly gives things a lot of thought and knows how to communicate his ideas extremely well

Obviously he's also remarkably well qualified.

Antony is a physiotherapist from Australia that works at the junction of Musculoskeletal, Sports, and Pelvic Health treatment, rehabilitation, and performance enhancement.

Antony is also the founder of My PT Education, an educational platform dedicated to helping health and fitness professionals to “Do Something Different”.

He has been studying and working in Physiotherapy since 1993. During this time, he has earned his degree in Physiotherapy, a Masters in Physiotherapy, and took part in the Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy Specialisation training program – the highest form of training a physiotherapist can take in Australia.

 So we talk many things including;

The "be afraid, be very afraid!!" nonsense with regards to diastasis recti needs to stop.

Soft doming Vs hard doming.

Why thinking about the muscle during exercise is the wrong way to approach an exercise.

Why diastasis is not an injury but an adaptation, and why that matters.

That diastasis recti is not a problem unless the person who has it says it is.

Whether diastasis leads to other issues such as lower back pain or if there's a link between diastasis and pelvic floor problems.

Could diastasis during pregnancy actually be preventing prolapse? IOW, is diastasis actually a good thing, rather than something to be concerned about

Why not everything people associate with diastasis is actually caused by diastasis.

Why a lot of terms used in post-partum recovery programs, such as "diaphragmatic breathing" actually don't mean that much but just sound important.
.
And one of the BIGGEST fallacies in physio treatment/personal training etc. "If something is better after you've come to see me..that's because I'm a genius! And if it didn't work, it's because YOU did something wrong"

And much more.

If you're a fitness professional working with post-partum women, or even if you're not, this is a must listen!

You can find Antony in all the usual places but remember that he's also coming to the UK at the end of January!

You can find all the dates, and book the course, here
You can also find all other courses he does here

We talk about a wide-range of things.

What is Emotional Intelligence?
Can it be taught?
Why do children respond differently to big events happening in their life than adults do?
Why is it completely normal for kids to "over-react"?
How can you help your kids process the big emotions better?
Why it makes sense to treat every child differently and take a personalised approach to raising kids.

On this week's episode I have the pleasure of talking to  Dr. Gina Simmons Schneider.

Gina is the author of Frazzlebrain: Break Free from Anxiety, Anger, and Stress Using Advanced Discoveries in Neuropsychology (Central Recovery Press, March 2022).

She is a licensed psychotherapist, executive coach, and corporate trainer. She serves as codirector of Schneider Counseling and Corporate Solutions.

Dr. Schneider is a coping skills expert with more than 25 years of experience helping people regulate difficult emotions and conflicts. Dr. Schneider is certified in Neuroscience for Clinicians through PESI and Critical Incident Stress Debriefing through National Trauma Services.

In short, she is a remarkably qualified person when it comes  to dealing with stressful situations and emotions.

We have a tremendous conversation about how we can all deal with stressful situations better and more productively, making sure we don't stay in that stressed state for too long and realising that we might not control the situation but, with a bit of help, we can control our response and make our life easier for ourselves.

We are talking the power of the mind when it comes to stress but even when it comes to things like weightloss and athletic performance and post-partum recovery.

I would highly recommend reading Frazzlebrain, it's a great read, and Dr Gina has a gift for explaining these concepts in a clear and engaging way.

On this week's episode I answer a question about "doming" of the stomach during exercise.

Should you "STOP IMMEDIATELY!", as so many physios tell you to? Or could there maybe be more than 1 type of doming/reason for doming and can you "push through"?

Is it really as black and white as some "post-natal professionals" tell you it is?

Also this week, from the tremendous source of news that is the Daily Mail (yucky);
A study that shows Intermittent Fasting comes with a 30%(!!!) increased chance of death??

"Intermittent Fasting decreases the chances of Alzheimers". I get on this before Michael Mossley decides to quote it in his next Daily Mail article.

"Keto diet increases pancreatic cancer survival" One for all the "keto-fans" out there.

and "High salt intake increases stress-response". We all know too much salt is bad for us but could it really make you more stressed?

But I begin by talking "magic bullets"!

On this week's episode I explain the main reason why you're not getting the results you're hoping for from your fitness routine or diet.

Over the years I've had many conversations with clients about this. Whether it's a middle-aged executive wanting to lose weight, a recently post-partum woman wanting to fix her back-pain and diastasis recti or a tennis player wanting to improve her rotational balance, the main reason for them not getting the results they are after, in the time-frame they want to achieve them in, is the same.

The importance of managing your expectations and being honest about the sacrifices you're willing to make.

Get the above right and you will get the results you want.

On this week's, admittedly rather dry, episode I talk about an email someone sent me with a link to this study.
The conclusion of the study "A weekly, postpartum, supervised exercise program, including strength training of the pelvic floor and abdominal muscles, in addition to daily home training of the pelvic floor muscles, did not reduce the prevalence of diastasis."

The conclusion the person who sent me the study drew from this was that exercise does not work to heal diastasis recti. Now though that might seem a similar conclusion to what the study came to, I'll explain why it really isn't.

I also touch on what kind of study it is and why I'm not particularly keen on studies of this kind (the term waste of time and money springs to mind ;).

Having said that, the study is sound, it's just "the wrong kind of study" (in my opinion)..but it's important that people who read a study such as this understand what they are actually looking at.

Here is another study that I mentioned in this episode that has a similar issue.

I also briefly touch on another email that I recieved asking about the effects of Relaxin on post-partum recovery, especially diastasis recti, and why I don't agree with people who say that it plays such a big part that you can't recover from diastasis recti until a few months after the Relaxin has left your body.
And here is another study that I mentioned about the Linea Alba and what "the gap" usually is

All in all the subject matter might be a bit dry but I promise you it's a good one to listen to, especially if you're a fitness professional, physio or just hang out on "mommy-forums" a lot, because this will hopefully clear a lot up :)

On this week's episode I talk about what I believe is one of the biggest problems in your post-natal recovery; Fear. And especially "The fear of making things worse".

By far most of the emails I get refer to this in one way or another.

"What if I make my diastasis worse?"
"I am told I can't do X exercise because my stomach will rip open"
"The physio told me not to lift anything, including my toddler"

The fitness industry, especially the post-partum fitness industry, is selling you this idea that you have to be scared or disgusted all the time.

"BE CAREFUL OR YOU'LL NEVER RECOVER!"
"DON'T CARRY YOUR BABY ON YOUR HIPS OR YOU'LL MAKE YOUR DIASTASIS WORSE!"
"DIASTASIS IS A LIFELONG CONDITION
.....so keep giving me your money".

"I know you don't like your post-partum belly but you gave birth and that's a beautiful thing" is a wonderful "negging" thing to do that makes you think you should feel unhappy with the way you look and it's something a lot of post-partum exercise providers like to use.

Though there are of course certain things you have to be aware of when trying to heal your diastasis/pelvic floor or any other post-partum issues that is not the same as being scared or digusted.

"The depth of the gap is more important than the width!" is a common phrase you hear these days from "diastasis recti professionals" but is it actually true?

Can diastasis recti cause digestive issues? One "diastasis specialist" claims it could "because muscles aren't working properly and you need muscles to move food through the digestive tract". Let's talk about this a bit because a LOT of women have digestive issues post-partum and, obviously, a lot have diastasis as well. But are they linked??

The importance of picking your goal and focusing ONLY on that. I talk about a client with a shoulder injury whom I started working with this week.

"In the news this week"; This from the Daily Mail (one of the go-to websites for people about health related news, which is a bit of a shame to be honest). A soup and shake diet to beat Type 2 Diabetes. A good idea? And, does it work because the diet is magic or is there something else going on?

On this week's episode

"The depth of the gap is more important than the width!" is a common phrase you hear these days from "diastasis recti professionals" but is it actually true?

Can diastasis recti cause digestive issues? One "diastasis specialist" claims it could "because muscles aren't working properly and you need muscles to move food through the digestive tract". Let's talk about this a bit because a LOT of women have digestive issues post-partum and, obviously, a lot have diastasis as well. But are they linked??

The importance of picking your goal and focusing ONLY on that. I talk about a client with a shoulder injury whom I started working with this week.

On this week's episode I talk about the corporate day that I attended which was a bit of an eye-opener with regards to some things.

But first;  A lovely statement I heard from a  wellness/healthcare provider when asked why they charge soo much and their "pay in installment" option is soo much more expensive since that means women with less money can't afford their rehab package; "Poor people won't do the exercises anyways"....and their explanation was actually worse than that sounds!

I talk ergonomic chairs and keyboards Vs exercise.
Why your insurance company would be better off including post-partum rehab exercise in their offering, and why they don't.

Then I talk about an email which I received which asked which shakes I recommended for post-partum women, and generic weightloss advice for PP women.

And finally; should you plan your exercise around your period?

On this week's episode I repond to more questions that came in on the back of last week's episode.

I mentioned diet and how to do it. I go into a bit of depth about how my approach to weightloss is different depending on the clients and their starting point. Personalising your approach to diet is the key to success, whether you want to lose weight or get healthier.

I also talk a bit about the many variations of diastasis recti and why no two cases are generally the same.

Are F45 classes safe to do post-partum? I had to figure out what F45 was first tbh.

And "Is belly dancing a good way to train your core"?

I briefly mention the MASIC foundation, who do amazing work for women who have suffered from severe perineal  injuries during birth, (OASI (Obstetric Anal Sphincter Injury)) .

And "In the news this week" a study I wanted to mention last week about the rise in early onset cancers in people. (Cancer in the under 50s). A fascinating look into the rise in cancer numbers but not just because of the increase in numbers but the link between the foods we eat and the increase in cancer risk the study claims there is.

Not the happiest of subjects, I'll grant you, but an important thing to understand so I'll have a look and see if the study is one to take seriously, or if it's "one of those studies".

On this week's episode I answer some of your questions.

Can you cycle with diastasis recti?

Is diastasis recti really permanent? Answer, as you are likely to know; it is not! And if an expert tells you this then they are lying to you. So let's talk about lying experts a bit as well.

Will your stomach "rip open" if you exercise with diastasis recti?

High Intensity Interval Training with diastasis recti, is it safe?

Decaffeinated coffee yay or nay?

And what weightloss is sustainable and how to go about being successful?

And why, OH MY GOD WHY??, would someone advocate trying to be in a calorie deficit at all times?

I'm also talking about healthypostnatalbody.com videos soon being available in many languages; Hindi, Spanish and Dutch are some of the languages I am working on.

Have you ever questioned whether your day to day actions align with your values?
Do you give to charity but wonder if there's more you can do to have a positive impact in the world?  Not by giving money but by making those small changes in your life that will have an overwhelmingly positive impact, much more so than donating some money here and there,

Are you keen to teach your children just how they can make the world a genuinely better place?

Well then you are in luck!
This week I have the absolute pleasure of talking to Sharon Schneider. And I don't mind telling you this is one of the most powerful talks I've had over the past few years.

Sharon is an entrepreneur, a philanthropy expert, an impact investor, and a strategist who advises socially conscious founders and family offices. She has overseen more than $1.5 billion in philanthropic capital deployed through grants, impact investments, advocacy
efforts, and business operations from some of the world’s most prominent families, including members of the Giving Pledge, the Forbes 400 wealthiest individuals, top-ten US private foundations, and others.

In other words, Sharon is the person to speak to about this sort of thing. Her insight is phenomenal and the ideas she brings to the table will, no doubt, have you inspired to make some small changes that will have a HUGE impact in the world around you.

Sharon's book "Handbook for an integrated life" is available now

You can find Sharon on Twitter, where all the cool kids hang out.
And LinkedIn

In the news this week; This interesting study from the Max Planck Institute in Germany that found that a 1 hour walk in nature has a causal effect when it comes to destressing the brain.

In this week's episode I have the pleasure of talking to Brenden Kumarasamy about an essential skill that most children, and adults, are not actually taught in school!

Public speaking and effective communication is essential for anyone who wants to get anything done in life and yet it is a skill not taught in schools or indeed at home.

You might know Brenden from the Mastertalk YouTube channel. He has coached CEOs at the highest level and is one of THE go-to people to talk to about this sort of thing.

Brenden very kindly took an hour out of his day to talk to me about this.

We discussed what exactly the education system is getting wrong when it comes to this?
Why presentations in schools don't make your child a better speaker.
How to become a better speaking and effective communicator.
How parents can support their children in this.
How to communicate boundaries to your children.
And how to become a better communicator yourself and advance your career.

If you, like I, want to become a better communicator or improve your child's communication and public speaking skill I highly recommend you check out Brenden's website here where you will find a free course

In the news this week; This embarrasing article by Yvonne Roberts in the Guardian. I talk about my issue with "feminists" who spend their entire time talking down to other women. Apologies, I do say "shit" a lot in this segment as it REALLY gets my goat when "newspapers" publish pieces that do nothing but denigrate women. Don't get me wrong, we all expect the Daily Mail to do it but for The Observer to publish articles like this is disgraceful.

In this week's episode I am delighted to talk with Kelly Smith.

Kelly is the host of the Meditation Mama podcast and the guided meditation podcast Mindful In Minutes.
She’s also the founder of a virtual meditation school called Yoga For You
And she has the best voice in the business!

We are talking about micro-habits. Small changes you can make to your daily routine that will have an immediate impact on your health.

She also explains that you don't need to take hour-long Yoga and meditation classes to feel better, the science says 10 minutes is enough.
We also touch on how yoga is more than a class you take for exercise and aesthetic reasons.

And much, much more.

Listening to Kelly is a treat and I'm sure you'll want to jump onto her podcasts about 2 minutes into this interview but if you could hang around til then end that would be appreciated :)

Definitely
check out her Spotify playlist which has 6 hours of full yoga nidra practices from her podcast

In the news this week; this interesting study that gives an insight into why parents from a poorer background might be more tempted to give their kid's poorer quality food/fast food/treats etc. This is a fascinating take as it shows that the parents give their kid's junkfood/treats to compensate for healthier "rewards" that they are not able to afford. IOW, parents might not be able to take their kids hiking, or join a sports club, due to the cost involved but a compensation for missing out on those healthy activities could be a burger or something. I'll delve into the study a bit as it really is something easily missed.

In this week's episode I have the pleasure of talking with personal trainer, author, podcast host and all-round-good-guy-and-happy-chappy  Brian Keane.

You might, or should I say "should", know Brian from the Brian Keane podcast ( which is one of THE top nutrition podcasts in the UK) and his social media presence. He is one of my favourite people in the health and fitness world at the moment as he never tries to sell you a shortcut, is always truthful and is very generous with his knowledge and expertise.

We are talking "the PERFECT diet".

How do you go about finding the perfect diet?
What is the most important thing when it comes to diet?
Why the diet your friend recommended does not work for you.
Should the health and fitness industry stop dealing in black and white?
Are cookbooks/recipe books beneficial?

And much more. Anyone who is familiar with Brian's work will know he is one of THE guys to talk to about this sort of thing and I have no doubt at all that you'll be inpired and get a tonne of useful information from this episode.

Brian can be found in all corners of the internet, he is everywhere!

In this week's episode I am talking to the dual Dr couple May and Tim Hindmarsh about everything American Healthcare.

They are both extremely experienced healthcare professionals and bring an excellent insight into the inner workings of a very complex system.

They also both, very kindly, gave an hour and a half of their time to talk about many things including;

The enormous profit disparity between a preventative approach and medical treatment.
The rising cost of healthcare.
The benefits of the US system compared to other systems, (Yes there are some), and the downsides.
The big problems patients and medical staff come across.
Time spent on paperwork is time away from patientcare.

And much, MUCH  more

May and Tim are great fun to talk and listen to, open and engaging, and their experience as long-time healthcare professionals will no doubt be enlightening to anyone interested in what people on the front-line are going through.

In this week's, nice and brief,  episode I answer the question whether you can heal diastasis recti whilst you're breastfeeding.

For some reason some healthcare professionals don't understand how breastfeeding impacts the body, but it DEFINITELY doesn't make your muscles stop working like muscles!!

Also, again, diastasis recti is not "for life and you will always have to maintain it".

And finally; "21 day challenges to heal diastasis recti"? Oh, just please don't!

In the news this week; This little thing that the UK government snuck out in amongst all the "who will be the next PM" chaos. Just in case you thought the restrictions on abortion could only happen in other countries, the UK government has now decided it doesn't need to be placed in the Human Right's statement either. This is all part of a rather worrying trend where politicians, of all parties and all sexes, are happy to slowly strip women's independence away from them. From Republicans in the US voting against contraceptives to the elected officials in Scotland, at a national and local level, deciding to go back to the puritan approach of the 1950s and banning women working in strip clubs.
This stuff is something to get active about and write to your representative.

In this week's episode I talk about running as post-partum exercise and why it's not the best idea in the world.
Here's the previous episode I refer to when talking about the interview I did with Jessica Marie Rose Leggio

I also talk about my pet peeve with the NHS website and diastasis recti. In short, they are full of s**t when they say that " The separation between your stomach muscles will usually go back to normal by the time your baby is 8 weeks old. "

Their overall exercise advice is also pretty terrible and the "stomach exercise" they refer to is just the core-breath..but slightly worse and terribly explained
Overall the NHS website is terrible, much like the NHS itself, when it comes to giving post-partum women advice.

No "in the news this week" so it's a nice short one.

In this week's, nice and brief, episode I talk about some of the basics of post-partum exercise such as "how diastasis recti can cause knee-pain."

I also touch on the idea that diastasis recti can not be healed, or is more difficult to heal, when you're still breastfeeding "because of Relaxin".

The role of Relaxin on post-partum recovery has not been established AT ALL but this "wisdom" is now doing the rounds on all the support forums.

I also  highlight a very important thing that last week's guest (Court Garfoot) pointed out. Kefir, and other pro-biotics, do very little when your overall diet is horrible. So I spend some time talking about that.

In the news this week; I talk about an interesting study about "the carcinogenic effects of heating plastic bowls" as it highlights the importance of actually reading the study rather than the  headlines. Don't worry, using a plastic bowl won't kill you unless you eat it

In this weeks episode I am joined by Court Garfoot and we're talking everything PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome)

Court is a nutritionist and specialises in hormone imbalances including PCOS and Endometriosis.
She is also very eloquent and knowledgable so she is just the ticket when you want to talk to someone about this sort of thing.

We went over loads including some of the most important questions;

What is PCOS and what it is not?
The 4 different kinds of PCOS????
What REALLY causes PCOS?
Why does the NHS advice to PCOS say there is no cure?
How can you manage PCOS?
What are your starting points to sorting your PCOS?
How long does it take for lifestyle changes to take effect?

and much, MUCH, more.

You can find Court by going to

In the news this week; No "In the news" but I do briefly touch on Tatjana Maria reaching the Quarter Finals of Wimbledon today. It just shows you that, with the right team around you, and some hard work and dedication there is no reason why you can't be in better shape post-partum than you were pre-natal!

In this weeks episode I have the pleasure of talking to post-partum anxiety expert Allison Lieberman.

She is a licensed marriage and family therapist, postpartum anxiety expert, mom of 2, and 2x postpartum anxiety survivor.

She is the co-founder of Rooted in Harmony Counseling, a California-based group therapy practice dedicated to helping moms with anxiety, relationships, and parenting.
She is the host of The New Mama Mentor® Podcast and creator of The New Mama Mentor® Signature Program

In other words, she is THE person to talk to about post-partum anxiety.

We are talking everything to do with post-partum anxiety;

Why is it often misdiagnosed, or missed?
Why does the wider public, including healthcare professionals, not realise this is a thing? (As an aside, I REALLY struggled to even find a "post-partum anxiety" image to go with the podcast..."post-partum depression" however was not at all a problem)

How can you diagnose it yourself, what does it look like?
What can you do about it?

And much more.

You can find Allison in all the usual places;

Her website
Her fantastic podcast
Instagram
And
Facebook

In the news this week;Of course I touch on the crazy decision by the US Supreme Court but mainly so I get to link to this wonderful pro-choice resource someone created that has  A TONNE of links in it that will help. The information is constantly updated so this is a must have.

I also go over this article from the Telegraph which, basically, seems to be written by Matt Roberts who is their go-to PT. The fundamental flaw of the article is what I will discuss because you REALLY should not take articles like this seriously at all and you definitely should not base your fitness regime on nonsense such as this.

Why "15 minutes sitting in the dark" really isn't the solution.
The impact of diet on migraines.

In this weeks episode I am talking about the importance of getting the basics right.

I had an email where someone asked how to tighten up the bit below her bellybutton and when I mentioned exercises that could help (such as the TVA leg raises that are part of the HPNB program) she said "Yes, I can easily do them and they don't help".
This reminded me of the importance of getting the basics right. In this case, it means exerting enough pressure on the legs to make sure the TVA kicks in properly.

If we ignore the basics everything else falls apart, so let's go over the basics of post-partum recovery.

In this weeks episode I had the pleasure of talking to Anna Maria DiDio

Anna Maria DiDio, MSW is an adoptive mother and was inspired to write her memoir, Love at the Border, An Adoption Adventure after her own family journey to Mexico.

Now her L.I.F.E.* ( *Love Inspires Families Everywhere ) Adventures children’s books feature stories about adoption, foster care, stepchildren, and all blended families from the point of view of the child.

Anna Maria hopes that her books encourage open and honest exploration of what children are thinking and feeling within their own unique families.

Anna Maria holds a BA in Psychology from Villanova University and an MSW in Family Specialization from the University of Pennsylvania.
For over twenty years, Anna Maria DiDio has devoted her time and talents to many non-profit organizations focusing on women, girls, and families globally. She is currently President of Women International Leaders (WIL) of Greater Philadelphia, which provides micro loans and empowerment grants to women in under-resourced countries. Anna Maria is at her most creative when she is traveling and experiencing new people, places, and things to eat and then writing about it!

She can be found at home in Philadelphia walking everywhere, swimming laps, reading biographies, or baking chocolate chip cookies. Anna Maria's books can be found on Amazon, travel writing and other essays on The Bean's Talk – her Medium publication. More information can be found on her website AMDiDio.com.

This week I talk about exercise during pregnancy and answer 4 questions I get asked a lot ;

What can you do?
What can you not do?
What should you do?
And, what should you NOT do?

I also go into metabolism and weightmanagement/weightloss.

A lot of people keep making the fundamental mistake that they don't understand just how big of a difference a small change in metabolism really makes.
I will show you how for a lot of people an extra 100 calories, burned or consumed, actually means the difference between being obese or being at their target weight.

In the news this week  I talk about period trackers for athletic performance. So Jessica Ennis-Hill has added a period tracker to her app and she thinks you should to. Is she right?
Should you use a period tracker to schedule your training or is there a better, and much simpler, way?
