I’m sharing all of the details on my training leading up to the Cocodona 250 miler ultramarathon! And this is the second episode in the series breaking down my previous month of training.

In this episode I cover:

-Why speedwork is essential when it comes to training for a 200 miler (or any distance)

-How to structure your training with intention and impact (even in a busy schedule)

-How to test your fitness throughout your training to make sure you are on track

-What are the most important workouts prioritized within a training block

Plus, I answer your questions around my longest run I’ll do in my block, what my nutrition strategy will be like, how to approach the mental lows of the race, and how I structure my goals for Cocodona 250.

If you want a look on how to structure a training program for ANY race (and not just Cocodona) this episode will give you all the tips on how to do so.

Thank you so much for listening!

So, what’s the best way to have strong hips? And what are the things we can do to make sure we don’t have weak or imbalance hips to prevent any injuries in the future, or to make sure we’re not leaving performance on the table?

We’re joined by hip health expert, Dr. Sarah, who is a physical therapist who helps runners return to running pain free from hip injuries.

And in this episode she shares the key ways to make sure you have impeccable hip strength, how to identify any imbalances in your hips, and how to increase your running performance and prevent (or heal) hip injuries that may come from running.

This episode comes from the lens of an ultrarunner who also has a full-time job and a family with two young kids. And his name is Keifer Gilbert. Having crew and pacers at an ultra can be an absolute gamechanger and, in my experience, will greatly increase your chances of success on race day. That’s because a good crew and pacer strategy will keep you moving strong, take a lot of the mental thinking off your plate in an ultra, and can get you everything you need without you doing extra work.

But how do you organize a well-rounded crew and strong pacers? And how can you maximize your use of crew and pacer to get the best results. And wait: where do you even FIND crew or pacer?

We cover all of those questions and much more in this episode!

Utilizing my experience both using crew and pacers, and also me being on the crew and pacing for elite athletes like Sally McRae and Scott Traer, I share everything you need to know to have a rock solid crew/pacing strategy for your next ultra.

I also share how to find the best crew/pacers (even if you don’t know any other runners), how to make sure your crew/pacers are aligned with your strategy, and how to know if a crew or pacers is even necessary for your race!

Thank you so much for listening to the episode!

Nutrition and fueling is one of the most important topics when it comes to ultrarunning. But here’s the thing: it’s the area most people struggle in. And since stomach issues is the #1 cause for DNF’s in an ultra, getting your nutrition strategy nailed down is an absolute must when it comes to preparing for your next race! Over the years of my own racing and working with tons of athletes, I created a process to help out with testing nutrition so that you can avoid upset stomachs, fuel excellently in a race, and feel much better so you can not only avoid stomach issues, but also perform better. And in this episode, I’m sharing that exact strategy with you! I share how much food you should be eating, how to test your nutrition strategies, alternate options if you get an upset stomach frequently in your races, and how to apply nutrition in your training. Running an ultra not only requires you to be physically fit; it also requires you to be mentally fit as well. And part of being mentally fit includes being fully confident in yourself and abilities to be able to get across that finish line.

We all struggle with that negative voice in our head that says “you can’t do this”, especially when we are at the halfway point of an ultramarathon. But if you have unshakable confidence that is deeply rooted inside you, you will be able to conquer that voice and any obstacle you face in a race and in your life. This episode will show you the no B.S. way to build unbreakable, sustainable, and real confidence (hint: it goes beyond just shouting answers in the mirror).

We cover how you can rewire your brain to be more confident in your races and training, how you can apply confidence boosting activities in your ultra training, and ways you can combat that negative voice in your head when things get tough.

Thank you so much for listening!

In this episode, Jacky shares how she built the self-belief and mindset to be able to accomplish what she has accomplished, her secret weapons for overcoming mental lows, and how she approaches training for her big ultra goals.

Huge shoutout to Jacky for coming on the show!

Endurance sports and ultrarunning make us better people. Plain and simple. Whether that is by giving us the mental strength to do hard tasks in our life, the problem solving skills to get out of sticky situations, or the hook to have us chase bigger goals, the effects on our life are incredible.

But there are even more ways where endurance sports can help us to be better in our lives. And in this episode, our guest breaks down all of the ways (most of them, not obvious) of how we can use endurance to live a better life.

Our guest today is Tony Lillios who is the founder of Speck Products, an Executive Coach, and multiple IRONMAN finisher and endurance athlete. He is also a speaker, mentor, and thought leader in the entreprenurial world.

In this episode, Tony shares the not so obvious ways where you can use endurance sports to improve your life, how you can learn to use endurance as your "life dojo", and questions to ask yourself daily to achieve what you want in your life.

Huge thank you to Tony for coming on the show!

What is it like to run 50 miles at a 5:45 average pace? Our guest today tells us exactly what it feels like and what it took to help him get there. Because he recently did that at the Tunnel Hill 50 miler where he set the world record for fastest 50 mile in 4:48:41!

Our guest today is Charlie Lawrence and he’s a professional runner for Bare Performance Nutrition and HVMN. He is also a 2:16 marathoner and has numerous spectacular finishes in the half marathon and marathon distances. This recent 50 miler was his first ever 50 miler as well!

In this episode, Charlie shares how he mentally was able to push through the lows of the race, why he approached speed work so digiligently in his prep for his first 50 miler, and his interesting nutrition strategy involving exogenous ketones.

Huge thank you to Charlie for coming on the show!

Javelina Jundred this year was wild and I've never learned more in a race than I have ever learned throughout this experience. I raced the 100 miler for my second attempt at this race, for yet another stab at the Golden Ticket. Although I came massively short, I learned a ton. And ended up finishing 15th male, despite battling incredible pain in my quads and a really rough day. In this episode, I share a full, raw, and real recap of the day. I also share my biggest lessons and takeaways throughout the race to help you be a better endurance athlete. And I share about how I've been feeling post-recovery from the race. I know this is a LONG episode, but there was just so much to share here. Thank you so much for listening in to the episode! Known as one of the most inspiring runners in the ultra scene, Sally McRae capped off her incredible journey of completing four 200 mile races in one year with a win at the Moab 240.

Not only did she win Moab, she also won the Grand Slam of 200’s and the Triple Crown of 200’s this year, all within her very first year of doing 200+ mile races.

But it didn’t come easy; Sally battled obstacle after obstacle throughout each race. And despite all that, she still chose strong, dug deep, and pushed hard in every race to achieve her biggest dream.

In this episode, Sally shares her biggest lessons from Moab and the Grand Slam, wild stories from both Bigfoot and Moab, and her biggest piece of advice for runners who are looking to complete any endurance challenge.

Sally is professional trail runner for Nike, BPN, Camelbak, Leki, and COROS. She is also the author of the book “Choose Strong” and host of the “Choose Strong Podcast”, which is meant to inspire people to choose strength over fear in any situation in life. She is also a mother of two on top of it all!

We are also joined by my good friend, Leo Fung, who was crew chief at Bigfoot 200 for Sally, and also on the crew team at Moab 240. Leo is one of a kind and an all around great dude, so it was so amazing to have him on the show.

Huge thank you to Sally and Leo for coming on the show!

In early August, Dominic Fusco and his crew went to a local track to record their mile times. Although being a certified personal trainer and nutrition coach with two marathons and an ultra under his belt, Dom collapsed on the track and went into cardiac arrest. Thankfully, he was able to get necessary medical attention and recover.

Today, Dom shares how his cardiac arrest experience helped him gain a better perspective on life. As a fitness content creator and mental health advocate, I was intrigued to chat with Dom and hear all of his insights, including how to avoid burnout and principles for living a healthy life - both mentally and physically.

What makes a great runner? A runner who loves it and enjoys themself out there. Sometimes, it’s easy to get caught up in training and forget the reason why we started this sport. In this episode, I chatted with Hilary Yang about rediscovering joy in running. Tapping into this joy of ultrarunning and embracing the lows led to Hilary’s strong finish at IMTUF 100.

Hilary is an award-winning content creator, which includes photography, graphic design, writing, videography, and being a creative director. On top of all this, she is an outstanding ultrarunner, so I was stoked to hear her take on training amidst a busy schedule, along with lessons learned from when High Lonesome did not go as planned last year. Hilary had a ton of intriguing insights from her personal experiences as an athlete and also from behind the camera at several ultra events - this episode is not one to miss!

Here’s a deep look into my training over the past few months for Javelina Jundred! And I’m joined by legendary ultrarunner (and my coach) Zach Bitter on this episode, as we recorded our most recent coaching call together to give you a deep look on how I work with my coach in prep for my goal race.

In this episode, I share the details of why I was so focused on speedwork over the past few months, my pacing strategy, and why my fitness is increasing along the way. Plus, you get to see all of the questions I ask Zach during the call as well.

And the cool thing is: this episode will be part of a new series I’m rolling out on the podcast called The Training Log where I’ll recap my prior month of training.

Huge thank you to Zach for coming on the show and for being an amazing coach!

If you want to learn ultrarunning training strategies from one of the most accomplished ultrarunners of our time, then this is the episode for you!

Today, we're chatting with Zach Bitter who is a professional ultrarunner for Altra and has held world records such as the fastest 100 mile time and most miles ran in 12 hours. He is also a four-time National Champion, and has won legendary ultras such as San Diego 100 and Javelina Jundred.

On top of that, Zach is also an endurance coach who helps ultrarunners achieve their biggest goals in running. And he has been my coach for almost two years. Since then, he's helped me go from average runner to top 10 male at one of the most competitve 100-milers in the US!

In this episode, Zach shares how you can increase your speed as an ultrarunner, mental tricks to help you perform your best on race day, and ultra training principles to help you nail your own goals.

This is actually a repurposed episode that was originally released in 2022, and the reason why we brought it back is because we'll be releasing a new series called The Training Log, where I'll be breaking down my own training every month.

Since Zach is my coach, I thought this would be the perfect fit to re-release.

Huge thank you to Zach for coming on the show!

When we hear the word “sustainability”, we immediately think that word just has to do with taking care of the planet. But as a runner, it means so much more than that. It also means taking care of you and your community, all while supporting the planet that supports us in our running goals.

And in this episode, we’re joined by elite athletes Tina Muir and Zoë Rom who share practical advice on how to be a more sustainable runner in these three areas. That way, you can continue to run at your very best while also taking care of the planet along the way.

Tina and Zoë Rom are both elite runners with impressive resumes in the running world. And they are also authors of the new book: Becoming a Sustainable Runner: A Guide to Running for Life, Community, and Planet.

Tina is a former elite runner, and host of the Running for Real podcast. Since retiring from racing professionally, she approaches running in a way that sustains her physically, mentally, and emotionally, and has discovered that that means getting out on the trails for long distances. She ran her first ultra a few weeks ago, the Bryce Canyon 50 Mile, and finished first female and third overall. She also devotes herself to her other passion, environmentalism, and has worked with the United Nations on campaigns related to climate change and humanitarian affairs.

Zoë is an elite trail runner and award-winning journalist who specializes in science, environmental, and adventure journalism. Her ultras include first place finishes at the Crested Butte 100k and Athens Big Fork Trail Marathon, and two consecutive wins at the War Eagle 50k. Her work has appeared in Outside, Backpacker, Trail Runner, Women’s Running and Discover magazines, and she’s the writer, host, and producer of the DNF podcast.

In this episode, Tina and Zoe share actionable steps on how to take care of your mind, body, and soul to make running more sustainable, how to give back to the running community to help lift it up, and ways to support the planet in your running lifestyle to help protect the planet.

Huge thank you to Tina and Zoe for coming on the show!

But within that running streak, he also has completed the Western States 100, Leadville 100, and ran across America - all without any days off in between!

Hellah Sidibe is a runner for Hoka and a content creator who has amassed a following in the hundreds of thousands due to his positive energy, unbreakable consistency, and willingness to help others find their passion. He is also a former professional soccer player who refound a new love in running thereafter.

In this episode, Hellah shares all the keys to how he’s been able to be so consistent in his run streak (including an INSANE story about how he kept the streak while traveling to Australia), why he’s planning to incorporate biking into his routine, and how he manages to remove the pressure when it comes to running to keep it fun.

Huge thank you to Hellah for coming on the show!
