Listener Q&A:

As compiled, deciphered, edited and sometimes read by Rachel Browne, the Podcast Sidekick.

Does Muscle Scraping Work?

Preston says: He's been seeing a personal trainer for the last month for his IT band and hamstring, they're very tight, he's 28 and never been able to touch his toes. For the last month they've been doing ridiculous stretches, but now his PT is beginning to use Gua Sha - the Chinese practice where they get inside your ligaments and scrape our whatever is built up to get blood flowing. Is muscle scraping good or is it woo woo?

In my response, I recommend: -Graston muscle scrapers How To Detox Your Liver

Michelle says: She's from upstate New York, and she's wondering about liver cleanses. She's been seeing on YouTube that folks have been drinking a concoction of olive oil and lemon juice, then having a bowl movement where stones come out of their body that are supposed to be from their liver. It sounds like a cool way to purge toxins from you liver but she wants to get your thoughts to see if its safe or not?

In my response, I recommend: -NatureCleanse -Liver detox Regenokine Stem Cell Therapy

Ross says: He's wondering what you think of stem cell therapy for treatment of injuries instead of surgery? Traditional doctors only seem to be interested in surgery and don't place much stock at all in the stem cell therapy, and the stem cell guys think stem cells are the way of the future. Regenics is the particular therapy he's thinking about, to repair articular cartilage damage in his knee, and he's wondering what you think?

In my response, I recommend: -BPC-157 -This podcast interview on stem cell therapy with Shawn Stephenson Are Tattoos Unhealthy?

Karen says: She's an ultra purist for what she puts in and on your body, as she knows you are too. She's never heard anyone address tattoos and injecting ink into the body. Is it harmful, is it not? Do you think we'll find out in 20 years that it is? She would love to hear your response!

In my response, I recommend: -National Tattoo Supply, Eternal, Skin Candy, Dynamic and Kuro Sumi -Metal Free -Cyto

I recently watched a fascinating video about sports technology in which Dr. Mounir Zok, who is the Director of Technology and Innovation for the U.S. Olympic Committee, delves into everything from electronic tattoos that read body signals to contact lenses that analyze fluid in the eyes for instant self-quantification.

In other words, this guy is the nerd who biohacks the jocks. Dr. Zok, who holds a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering, plays an instrumental and strategic role in bringing emerging technologies to Team USA. He is responsible for championing, setting up and running high-performance technology programs that increase the medaling chances of Team USA athletes at the future Olympic and Paralympic Games, including wearable technology, smart textiles and fabric, Internet of Things (IoT), and artificial intelligence and cognitive computing. And Dr. Zok is fluent in four languages. So he is officially one. Smart. Cookie.

In today's episode, we take a deep dive into the realm of advanced self-quantification techniques for athletes. During our discussion, you'll discover:

-How Dr. Zok measures the oxygen levels in his muscles...

-Why sweat and tears are the new goldmine in self-quantification...

-How an electronic, biodegradeable tattoo can be used to detect muscle and nervous system activity...

-The fascinating emergence of new contact lenses for analyzing fluids in the eye... -Socks that can measure your blood lactate levels...

-Headbands that can prime the motor cortex for enhanced performance...

-How the US Women's Track Cycling team is using artificial intelligence to enhance training...

-How to strike a balance between the fine art and the nitty-gritty science of reading the body...

-Whether you need to be concerned exposure to excessive bluetooth or wifi radiation from self-quantification devices...

-And much more...

Scientific American recently published the article "Beyond Resveratrol: The Anti-Aging NAD Fad", an article that proposes that...   ..."recent research suggests it may be possible to reverse mitochondrial decay with dietary supplements that increase cellular levels of a molecule called NAD (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide)"...   ...and also that...   ..."the mitochondria in muscles of elderly mice were restored to a youthful state after just a week of injections with NMN (nicotinamide mononucleotide), a molecule that naturally occurs in cells and, like NR, boosts levels of NAD"...   Since that article was published I've received an onslaught of questions about this mysterious molecule called NAD. It just so happens that a friend of mine, Thomas Ingoglia, known as one of the best NAD scientists on the planet and is also in contact with the best NAD clinicians on the planet - both with decades of experience second to none. I consider Thomas himself to be one of the most knowledgeable and frequent users of NAD I've ever met, and one of the few that has been playing around with NAD in combination with cryotherapy, blueberry extract, hyperbaric oxygen and other "biohacks" to completely turn him around from being bed-ridden sick and losing half his family in a car crash to being in the best health of his life, including crushing his first Spartan race with me last year (prior to which took high doses of NAD).   Problem is, most NAD clinical researchers are all underground at the moment. The FDA doesn't look kindly at NAD supplement companies and integrative doctors, they are quite skeptical of naturopathy, and their first impulse is to turn these things and others into patentable drugs because that’s the language the FDA speaks. Plus, NAD can be dangerous. Thomas even knows a guy personally (ironically, a Phd in toxicology that poisoned himself due to his own error) who hospitalized himself experimenting with the substances we’re going to be talking about in this podcast episode. So you need to proceed with caution and with the formal clinical information Thomas has opened my eyes to. Along with Thomas, today's podcast features Dr. Ross Grant, Phd. Dr. Grant is perhaps the most prolific authors in the field of NAD, and he specializes on NAD in the brain. He started researching NAD research back in 1994 while being laughed at, when no one was doing NAD research.   Dr. Ross Grant is Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Sydney Medical School and CEO of the Australasian Research Institute, Sydney Adventist Hospital. A biochemical pharmacologist with a Ph.D. in Neurochemistry/Neuropharmacology, Dr. Grant’s research is focused on NAD - specifically the role of oxidative stress - e.g. emotional stress, diet, and exercise - and NAD metabolism on brain cell death and cellular degeneration. A secondary interest is in the effect of exposure to novel nutritional components, such as polyphenols, on human cellular response to oxidative stress, with a goal of detecting and correcting early degenerative biochemical changes associated with aging-related degenerative disease. Dr. Grant is a member of the Australian Society for Medical Research (ASMR), Australian Neuroscience society (ANS), Australian Society of Clinical & Experimental Pharmacology and Toxicology, Nutrition Society of Australia (NSA).   With forty-eight articles published in peer-reviewed scientific journals, Dr. Grant is perhaps the most prolific author in the field of NAD research. In addition to Dr. Grant, we are joined by Dr. Philip Milgram, MD, from the NAD Treatment Center in San Diego, California. Dr. Milgram recovered from his own challenges with addiction and now helps other people in recovery from addiction, specifically by using NAD protocols. He trained in 1991 with Vernon Johnson, the man who coined the term “Intervention”. He was certified as a Prevention Specialist by the Certifying Board of Alcohol and Drug Counselors (CCBADC) in 2001, and has three degrees in counseling from UCSD; in Counseling and Interpersonal Communication, Alcohol and Drug Counselor and Advanced Intervention. In addition to NAD Treatment Center, Dr. Milgram served as the original Medical Director of Confidential Recovery and the Pemarro Detox Center. He has also served as the Medical Consultant for The Soledad House Recovery Home for Women and ABC Recovery since they opened. He is a member of the attending staff at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla and Board Certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Milgram is a member of The American Society of Addiction Medicine, the California Association of Addiction Medicine, International Doctors in AA, Like-Minded Docs Addiction Medicine, The American College of Preventive Medicine, the American Society of Anti-Aging Medicine, and the American Nutraceutical Association.   During our discussion, you'll discover: -An easy explanation of what exactly NAD is and what it does inside your body... -The protocol Thomas used to go from being addicted to opiates and chronically fatigued to completely healed... -How NAD can break addictions to alcohol, food, opiates and more... -The relationship between anti-aging and NAD... -The important difference between Nicotinamide Riboside vs. Nicotinamide (NMN) vs. NAD+... -The best way to "flood your body" with NAD, and why grapes and blueberries are so important when it comes to your NAD levels... -What kind of compounds, foods and lifestyle strategies enhance the effect of NAD... -How NAD can increase your time to exhaustion during exercise by over 15%... -How Thomas used NAD to enhance his performance in a Spartan race... -The best way to test your own NAD levels... -How NAD can be used in the treatment of Lyme Disease... -The best resource for people to delve more into NAD research... -And much more!   Resources from this episode: -Book by Nady Braidy: NAD+ metabolism in neurodegeneration and ageing   -NAD Treatment Center in San Diego, California   -Nicotinamide supplements (be careful with dosage on this, as we discuss in podcast!)   -Nicotinamide Riboside supplements (dosage also discussed in podcast)   -Resveratrol supplements   -Wild blueberry concentrate supplements   Do you have questions, comments or feedback for Dr. Grant, Dr. Mingram, Thomas Ingoglia or me? Note: There is a special addendum at the end of this podcast episode in which Ben mentions the book "Ego Is The Enemy", this sermon on Time & Resources by a man named Toby Sumpter and the practice of iridology. Last month, I released the podcast episode entitled "Why Is My Cortisol High Even Though I’m Doing Everything Right? Hidden Causes Of High Cortisol, The DUTCH Test & More!".

In that episode with fellow podcaster and health consultant Chris Kelly, we delved into the mystery of why cortisol can be so high in someone such as myself who sleeps well, does meditation, yoga, and lives a relatively stress-free life. It was a fascinating, extremely popular episode, but created just as many questions as it answered about what really causes high cortisol in people, and whether it's something you even need to worry about in the first place!

To delve into the cortisol mystery more, after that episode, Chris Kelly introduced me to Dr. Bryan Walsh, a naturopathic doctor from Maryland, with an amazing series of WellnessFX lab testing interpretation videos on YouTube. Dr. Walsh has an extremely sharp mind, an extensive fitness background, a degree in naturopathic medicine, and a host of additional training and certifications. His wife is a naturopath too, so his children are probably some of the healthiest on the planet. When tough cases or head-scratching lab results arise, Dr. Walsh turns from mild-mannered dad and husband into forensic physiologist, pulling out his microscope to analyze blood, saliva, urine, lifestyle and whatever else he has to, in order to solve the medical mystery. Dr. Walsh ran an extensive series of follow-up lab tests on me, primarily through the laboratory testing services of another functional medicine practitioner - a chiropractor in Atlanta, Georgia named Dr. Brady Hurst. At his company, TrueHealthLabs, Dr. Hurst uses advanced laboratory tools to uncover hidden dysfunctions and uses primarily drugless treatment plans to restore those dysfunctions. TrueHealthLabs has a number of direct-to-consumer tests that are not traditional lab tests and can instead be custom panels that a doctor or patient can order. They even offer some functional lab testing in Europe.

In this episode, Dr. Brady Hurst, Dr. Bryan Walsh and I completely geek out on the high cortisol lab testing results and during our discussion, you'll discover: -The secret ingredients the green morning smoothie that Dr. Bryan gives to his young children... -How to keep your morning green smoothie from getting oxidized or damaged by the blender... -The seven stage home filtration process Dr. Brady uses to filter his water... -The very first additional hormone you should test for if you find out your cortisol is high... -The best lab panel to look at whether or not your body is actually producing adequate antioxidants... -When high HDL (commonly known as good cholesterol) can actually be a bad thing... -How high cortisol down-regulates your metabolism and your insulin sensitivity and puts your body into fat storage mode... -Why thyroid replacement medications or natural thyroid supplements rarely work to fix the thyroid... -When you don't need to actually worry about high liver enzymes on a blood lab test... -The hidden laboratory marker that can tell you if you need to be consuming more sea salt and minerals... -How to tell if your body has excess oxidative stress, and what you can do about it... -And much more!

Resources from this episode: -iSpring Reverse Osmosis filter -Apex Energetics supplements that Dr. Brady uses -Liposomal glutathione -Article: How To Biohack Your Green Smoothie (And Can High Speed Blenders Really Damage Your Food?) -DUTCH Urine Steroid Hormone Profile -Ben Greenfield’s DUTCH test results -TrueHealthLabs Oxidative Stress Profile -Ben Greenfield's Oxidative Stress Profile results -TrueHealthLabs Custom Lab Testing - Ben tested the following: a. NMR Lipoprofile b. Oxidized LDL c. ACTH, cortisol, and aldosterone d. LH, FSH e. Free and total testosterone f. Prolactin g. C-peptide -Ben Greenfield's TrueHealthLabs Custom Lab Testing results Extra Notes: After our call, in a flurry of e-mails, Dr. Walsh also recommended the following follow up tests:

  1. Lymphocyte subset panel (CD4/CD8) – Your lymphocytes are relatively low compared to your neutrophils, so I’m not sure it would show much, but this panel shows ratios of lymphocytes, regardless of their total levels, and could offer a little info.
  2. Cytokine panel – I’m a little hesitant on the accuracy of these panels, but they are used in research, so I think they are accurate enough for our purposes. This might show a tendency for a Th1/Th2/Th17 shift, which could be interesting to know. High cortisol is often associated with a Th2 dominance, which this panel would theoretically show. If it were me, I’d be curious about the results of this panel.
  3. Neopterin – This is a huge stretch, but I personally love this marker. When neopterin is elevated, it suggests an Th1 response due to activated macrophages. If I had to bet money, I’d say this would come back normal for you but again, medicine attempts to rule out things first, and this would rule out any Th1 involvement.
  4. I don’t suspect any autoimmunity in you, but if you’re getting your blood drawn anyways, you could run something like ANA. This won’t identify all autoimmune conditions, but some. I’m on the fence about this marker.
  5. There’s one other marker you could run, but I would only run it for educational purposes for your listeners, and that is Glycomark, also known as 1,5 anhydroglucitol. This is one of my favorite markers of all time, because it measures postprandial glucose levels two weeks prior to the test, which is just awesome. I suspect that this marker, when abnormal, is the first of the glucose regulatory markers to show tendencies for glucose dysregulation, far before fasting glucose, c-peptide, or A1C.
  6. Cyrex panels – You mentioned this on the call. If you’re truly using yourself as an experiment for the benefit of listeners, you could run their antibody panel and/or their intestinal permeability panel. I know you’ve had some gut issues in the past, so the latter might be of interest. For the average patient, we usually use these when things aren’t resolving well, but for myself, if money weren’t an issue and I was truly doing an experiment, I’d run these panels to see what came up.
  7. If you’ve indeed had elevated cortisol for a few years now, and possibly elevated ACTH, it may be that you actually have enlarged adrenal glands capable of making more hormones. Here’s the thought process. ACTH is a “trophic” hormone, meaning it enlarges its target organ (adrenals). Not only that, the cells of the three layers of the adrenal glands can be repurposed for making different hormones than they were designed to. For example, cells in the outer-most layer of the cortex (glomerulosa) normally make aldosterone. But in the presence of sustained and elevated ACTH, the cells of the glomerulosa can morph into fasiculata cells, which normally make more cortisol. Thus, it may not only take less ACTH to stimulate cortisol release, but if the cells of the glomerulosa are repurposed, they will make less aldosterone, which is something you’re seeing on your lab as well. If you did want to ask a doc to humor you and get an ultrasound on your liver, you can see if they would be willing to do it on your adrenal glands as well. There are cash-based ultrasound clinics around and you wouldn’t even need a doctor’s recommendation.

Listener Q&A:

As compiled, deciphered, edited and sometimes read by Rachel Browne, the NEW Podcast Sidekick.

How Much Sun Is Too Much?

David says: Firstly, thank you for all the great information you provide. Secondly, he has a question in relation to dermatology. Being summer, he's started to spend more time in the sun to make sure his vitamin D levels are on point. He rarely uses sunscreen, instead deciding to titrate up his sun exposure as the season goes on. Lately he's been noticing he's not getting burnt but developing nice coloring when he spends 1-2 hours in the sun. However, he is noticing a growth in freckles and moles. Can you speak to how this happens and the mechanisms that drive the growth of moles and freckles on the skin.

In my response, I recommend: Does A Sauna Shrink Your Sperm?

Claire says: Claire is from Northern Ireland and her and her husband like to use the sauna and steam for hypothermic conditioning after a gym workout. Could this be detrimental to trying to convince a child? Also, any biohacks for two 40+ years old's trying to conceive?

In my response, I recommend: -Sauna health effect on sperm study -Four Hour Body Tim Ferriss iPhone experiment -50 Ways To Boost Your Sperm Count How To Live Long If Your Cholesterol Level Are High

Rick says: He loves listening to the podcast, and thanks for causing him to re-evaluate how he uses fatty coffee in his diet as he knows he has high cholesterol. He's been testing and trying to see where it's at as far as particle size goes, and was told today he has high count of small particles size, the ones that cause problems. His 9 year old son was in for his yearly checkup and they tested his cholesterol and it was also high. The doctor said if they don't get a handle on it in the next 6 months they want to put him on statan drugs, which Rick went on 10 years ago and experienced bad side effects. They refuse to put their child on it, so they're just trying to figure out how to stack the deck in their favor as they navigate the healthcare system. Any advice on how to live a long and healthy live with the elevated cholesterol levels?

In my response, I recommend: -The Daily Lipid Podcast Episode 16: Dietary Management of Heterozygous Familial Hypercholesterolemia (HeFH) How To Stop Grinding Your Teeth

Gina says: She's a long time listener. She was recently diagnosed with grinding her teeth at night, and western medicine's only solution to that is to design a plastic mouth guard, so she's still grinding her teeth, just not on the enamel. If you google the average recommendations are reduce caffeine, alcohol and levels of stress, and she's already working on all three. She's quit coffee, alcohol consumption is limited and she's doing everything she can about stress. Is there anything else you've heard of that can help her solve this?

In my response, I recommend: -Trace liquid minerals -Aztec sea salt -Craniosacral therapy/jaw realignment -Gut panel

I received plenty of puzzled comments and inquiries from podcast listeners when, several episodes ago, I mentioned that one could gain a large number of surprising health, longevity and disease preventing benefits by drinking up to 4-6 cups of coffee a day.

What I said in that episode was based on a book I recently read - a book by a Harvard medical researcher named Dr. Sanjiv Chopra. The book, entitled "The Big Five", delves into five simple things you can do to live a longer, healthier life and I actually learned quite a bit about everything from coffee to Vitamin D to nuts and beyond in it. Each of the recommendations outlined in this book has been proven by an overwhelming number of tests, trials, and studies to increase health and lifespan. Dr. Chopra promises that if you adapt the five simple, virtually-free suggestions in his book, you will live a longer and healthier life, guaranteed - without needing the latest expensive supplements, fad diets, jazzy exercise programs, and state-of-the-art gym equipment.

Since I'm all about natural living, anti-aging and longevity, I decided I had to get this guy on the show. Sanjiv Chopra, MD, is Professor of Medicine and served as Faculty Dean for Continuing Medical Education at Harvard Medical School for 12 years. He is the James Tullis Firm Chief, Department of Medicine, at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Dr. Chopra has more than 150 publications and seven books to his credit. Dr. Chopra is Editor-in-Chief of the Hepatology Section of UpToDate, the most widely used electronic textbook in the world subscribed to by more than 850,000 physicians in 149 countries.

He is a sought after motivational speaker across the United States and abroad, addressing diverse audiences on topics related to medicine, leadership, happiness, and living with purpose. Awards bestowed upon Dr. Chopra include.... • The George W. Thorn Award - 1985 • Received the highest accolade from the graduating class of Harvard Medical School, the Excellence in Teaching Award - 1991 • The Robert S. Stone Award - 1995 • American Gastroenterological Association’s Distinguished Educator Award - 2003 • Elected as a Master of the American College of Physicians, a singular honor bestowed to only a select few individuals for being ͞citizen physicians, educational innovators, scientific thinkers and humanists who inspire those around him or her and sets the standards for quality in medicine - 2009 • Recipient of Ellis Island Medal of Honor for “Exemplifying outstanding qualities in both one’s personal and professional lives while continuing to preserve the richness of one’s particular heritage.”–2012

On May 10, 2016, Dr. Chopra released his 8th book titled, The Big Five: Five Simple Things You Can Do to Live a Longer, Healthier Life, and during our discussion about the book, you'll discover:

-The shocking answer to the question Dr. Chopra asks when he's giving a lecture on liver disorders...

-The famous philosopher who drank 60-70 cups of coffee per day...

-Whether it matters if the coffee is caffeinated or decaffeinated...

-The one organ in your body that highly benefits from caffeinated versions of coffee...

-The surprising myth about coffee, blood pressure and heart rate...

-How many cups of coffee you can actually drink per day if you are a pregnant woman...

-How men and women respond differently to coffee, and why...

-Fast caffeine oxidizers vs. slow caffeine oxidizers, and which does not respond to caffeine's effects on exercise...

-Dr. Chopra's thoughts on coffee enemas...

-The effect of coffee on muscle motor units...

-The "world's most expensive coffee" from elephant dung and weasel poop...

-The trick to know if you are getting enough Vitamin D from natural sunlight...

-Why mold in peanuts and coffee may not be as big an issue as you think...

-How meditation affects your telomeres, your cells and your gut...

-And much more...

Dr. David Minkoff and I go way back. I first met this MD and 41 time Ironman triathlon finisher at the Half-Ironman World Championships in Florida six years ago, and interviewed him a few weeks later in the podcast episode “A Peek Into The Life of An Ironman, Natural Medicine Physician.” Then, he helped me with metal detoxification using a metal chelating spray he designed, and I interviewed him about this in the podcast “How Hidden Sources Of Heavy Metals Are Destroying Your Health, And What You Can Do About It.” He also helped me with my son’s exercise induced asthma, which is now completely eliminated using the techniques Dr. Minkoff introduced me to in the podcast “Why More Kids Are Getting Exercise Induced Asthma, and What You Can Do About It.” And last month, we recorded "Amino Acids, BCAA’s, EAA’s, Ketosis, Bonking & More With 41 Time Ironman Triathlete Dr. David Minkoff. ".

Now Dr. Minkoff is back to talk about cancer. During our discussion, you’ll discover: -The crazy story of why the voles around the Chernobyl radiation don't get cancer... -How a cancer cell produces toxic amounts of lactic acid, and why modern cancer medicine doesn't fix this problem... -Why we have been completely misled about why people actually get cancer, and why we're treating the cancer completely wrong... -How to mitigate the damage that chemotherapy causes... -Why you need to test your body's carbon dioxide levels, and how to do it... -Why too much protein - especially from dairy sources - could be a big issue when it comes to cancer... -The little-known water and blood ozonation methods Dr. Minkoff uses in his clinic, and how you can replicate the same effect in your own home... -Dr. Minkoff's controversial thoughts on "Gerston therapy" for cancer... -How you can personally decrease your chances of ever getting cancer... -And much more...

More About Dr. Minkoff: Dr. Minkoff graduated from the University of Wisconsin Medical School in 1974 and was elected to the “Phi Beta Kappa” of medical schools, the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Honors Medical Fraternity for very high academic achievement. He then worked as an attending physician in infectious disease, co-directed a neo-natal intensive care unit and worked in emergency medicine until 1995. In 1997, his interest in alternative and complementary medicine led him to open LifeWorks Wellness Center, which has become one of the foremost alternative medicine clinics in the U.S. His search to find a source of the highest quality nutritional supplements led him to establish BodyHealth in 2000, a resource that could provide doctors with the best possible supplementation and education for their patients. Today, his BodyHealth products are used by hundreds of practitioners and individual consumers who seek all-natural wellness and detoxification supplements with a demonstrated high level of quality and effectiveness. In addition to their use by patients looking to heal disease, the BodyHealth products are also used by sports enthusiasts interested in achieving and maintaining optimal performance. As a 40-time Ironman triathlon finisher, (including 8 appearances at the Ironman World Championships) Dr. Minkoff has first-hand experience to help athletes achieve optimum conditioning. Last month, I was driving to play tennis with some friends, and, while driving, I played a 55 minute audio episode entitled "Living an Extraordinary Life". I'm not a voracious "self-improvement" consumer, and this type of thing doesn't happen very often when I listen to podcasts, audiobooks or lectures, but I actually found myself multiple times stopping to pump my fist, verbally shout in agreement and furiously take notes. The program was recorded by my friend Stever Robbins, also known in the podcasting world as the "Get-It-Done Guy". Stever combines business savvy, "life hacking," and personal development to help people make their lives extraordinary. He is CEO of Ideas Unleashed, a company that helps thought leaders build businesses around their areas of expertise. He is a serial entrepreneur, executive coach, and executive curriculum designer. He co-founded the early internet success story FTP Software, served as COO of Building Blocks Interactive, CEO of JobTacToe.com, and has been an initial team member of ten start-ups, including four IPOs and three acquisitions. He was project manager at Intuit, where he co-led the development of the award-winning Quicken VISA Card. He serves as business plan judge for the Harvard Business School business plan competition, the Pete Conrad Spirit of Innovation Awards, the William James Foundation social enterprise competition, and the Mass Challenge entrepreneurship competition. His experience developing organizational leaders began as co-designer of Harvard Business School’s “Leadership and Learning” curriculum redesign, and has gone on to include being an advisor and mentor to senior managers in several high-growth companies. His Get-It-Done-Guy podcast has spent weeks as #1 in the iTunes business category and has been downloaded more than 23 million times. He has been a repeat commentator on CNN-fn's Entrepreneurs Only and hosted a regular segment on the nationally syndicated radio show Entrepreneurs, Living the American Dream. He is a featured expert in Harvard Business School Publishing's Harvard Manage Mentor, as well as appearing as an expert in critical thinking and memory in Houghton-Mifflin's forthcoming Skillbuilders series. He has been interviewed in numerous publications including The Wall Street Journal, NBC Nightly News, The New York Times, ABC News Now, MSNBC, FOX News, BusinessWeek Online, and Investor's Business Daily. He has written for Harvard Business Review, The Boston Business Journal and has had columns on Entrepreneur.com, Harvard Business School's Working Knowledge, and the Quick and Dirty Tips network. He is the author of It Takes a Lot More than Attitude...to Lead a Stellar Organization and Get-it-Done Guy's 9 Steps to Work Less and Do More, an Amazon Business & Investing top-10 best-seller.

Stever is also the co-writer and lyricist of the musical Work Less and Do More: The (Zombie) Musical. Yes, a zombie musical. And that is where we start with today's podcast.

During our discussion, you'll discover: -Why Stever moved away from home when he was 15 years old... -What Stever means when he says "the journey is the reward"... -The crazy dream that Stever had that led him on a three year experiment to quit his job and start a podcast... -Why I dislike watching tennis and reading fiction, and how this relates to you deciding what an extraordinary life could be for you... -Why values like "hard work", "setting goals", "planning" are all myths... -How dangerous the concept of delayed gratification can be... -And much more!

Can Testosterone Be Too High?

Joshua says: He loves the podcast and website. His question is, he just got his blood work back and everything looks good, except his testosterone. It was 1100, which he knows is ridiculously high so it scares him. Do you have any thoughts? He's going to his doctor in a week but doesn't trust them to have a real answer to whats going on. He knows its good to have high testosterone but 1100 is over the top.

In my response, I recommend: -Sex Hormone Balance Test Coffee Enemas 101

Yvonne says: She has a friend who does regular coffee enemas who also can't sleep at night. Is there a relationship between the enemas and the fact he can't sleep? Should he change the frequency of the enemas? He enjoys them so much because of the energy they give him. Please give us your advice.

In my response, I recommend: -My article on Bulletproof Coffee Enemas How To Get In Running Shape Fast

Joshua says: He's decided to start running, but he's never ran further than 3 miles. Do you have any suggestions for how to improve stamina, or ways to motivate yourself to go for a run? He's not sure if he'll try to get to full marathon distance, but he'd like to get to the point where he can run for an hour without getting tired, what are your thoughts?

In my response, I recommend: -Treadmill desk article -Troy Jacobson's Runervals -30 second treadmill bursts -Elliptical trainer high-intensity intervals (including this recent study on the Elliptigo) -Incline treadmill with weighted vest -Isometric squats or isometric lunges into sprints. Very much like the Russian underground techniques here. The 5 Best Ways To Accelerate Fat Loss

Craig says: Over the winter time he hurt his arm and fell out of taking care of himself with eating good foods and so on. Now he's 20lbs over the weight he likes to be at and hes trying to get aback on the horse. He's curious to know if you were in that position Ben, from a food, detox, fat loss perspective, what would you do, besides the obvious of eat better foods and exercise?

In my response, I recommend: -Infrared sauna plus niacin, followed by cold thermogenesis -Fasted fat loss with caffeine, including this fat burning zone calculation -MPX100, Organic Ceylon Cinnamon, Apple Cider Vinegar + regulation of sugar transporters the high intensity interval training or strength training pre-largest meal. -Compex or MarcPro ($32 discount at http://www.MarcPro.com with discount code “Ben”) -PowerLung - Captain of Crush/Hand Expander Band -One 24 hour water fast per week combined with amino acids, minerals and multivitamin.

Last week, I went rafting in the Grand Canyon, and I completely unplugged with zero cell phone or internet for five days. I came out of this "digital detox" extremely nervous about what my e-mail inbox would look like, how many voicemails and text messages I'd have, and what kind of fires I'd need to put out on the business front. But amazingly, things were just fine. It took me two hours to catch-up on e-mail. None of my clients died, and most got through their pre-written workouts just fine without me. The post office was still delivering mail to my home.

And life, my body, and my brain felt very, very good. Detoxed. Clean. My guest today, Joe DiStefano, is all about the digital detox. But he's no hairy hippie living in the woods. Instead, Joe is the co-founder of Spartan Coaching, the world's first international obstacle race training certification program. He has a B.S. in Exercise and Sports Science from Fitchburg State University, and he is pursuing a master's degree in Sports Psychology. Certified through the NASM as a Performance Enhancement Specialist and Corrective Exercise Specialist, he is also a Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the NSCA and has been trained at the C.H.E.K Institute as a Holistic Nutrition and Lifestyle Coach. Over the past decade, DiStafano has worked as a health and performance coach and a serial entrepreneur. Prior to joining Spartan Race, he oversaw the development of more than 100 women-only personal training studios across the U.S. His specialties include corrective exercise, nutrition, stress management, human psychology and business development.

During our discussion, you'll discover:

-Why Joe swears by using an "upright ski ergometer" as the #1 tool for total body fitness...

-The best way to make coffee if you want to retain all the bioactive, cognitive-performance enhancing components...

-Joe's top tip for travel-proofing your immune system...

-How to enhance the absorption of any supplement you take...

-The best body-weight-only travel workout you can do anytime, anyplace without anybody noticing...

-How your organs stick to one another, and the kind of breathing technique that can "unstick" these organs...

-Joe's underground method of making the gluten in bread less damaging...

-What happened to Joe's body when he experimented with doing 5-6 hours of yoga per day during a digital detox in Costa Rica...

-And much more...

Listener Q&A:

As compiled, deciphered, edited and sometimes read by Rachel Browne, the NEW Podcast Sidekick.

Is DNA Testing Dangerous For Your Privacy?

Preston says: In Dr. Sharon Moalem's book, 'Inheritance', she mentions that getting your genes tested might lead to insurance policy exclusions for you or your kids. How real of a threat is that? Does he have to worry about genetic testing companies being taken over by larger companies?

In my response, I recommend: -Genetics Legislation web page -How To Use 23andMe without giving up privacy data -Genetic testing options Natural Remedies for Night Terrors

Ryan says: He has a question regarding night terrors, he's not sure that's exactly what it is, but he's waking up in the middle of the night terrified. He's waking up from a deep sleep in a full blown panic and its put a hindrance on his sleep quality, he's waking up in a panic in a pitch black room and after he finds light and realizes what's going on he passes out and goes back to sleep from the huge adrenaline rush. It's horrible and he's hoping you can give him some insight whats going on he's heard things like eating too soon before bedtime can keep you too metabolically active. Can you shed any insight into what's going on physiologically and neurologically?

In my response, I recommend: -DMT book: The Spirit Molecule -Lully Sleep Guardian -My article on Sleep Cycles (includes sleep tracking options, lavender, Sleep Remedy supplement, CBD, etc.) Should You Eat Sugar With Fat?

Gurajit says: He's a long time listener and advocate. He loves carb back-loading, he's an endurance athlete. He recently read a study by Dr. Michael Mosley about the effects of food on your blood sugar levels and the amount of fat in your blood. He had a fry up in the morning and the evening and he found that the sugar and fat levels were higher and maintained higher when he ate the fry up at night. Does this fly in the face of carb back-loading from a general health (not endurance) standpoint?

In my response, I recommend: -Carb Backloading -MPX100 -Organic Ceylon Cinnamon -Apple Cider Vinegar How To Sleep Less Stressed

Tim says: For the past few years he's been working on calming his nervous system. He's used a lot of different modalities to try and get deep seated trauma out. He's done somatic experiencing, rolfing, psychotherapy, used heart math, meditation and a few others. He's made a lot of progress but he gets the sense that sleeping is triggering his nervous system, because he often wakes up really stiff and often with a clenched psoas and chest. Do you have any ideas for things he can do to help him sleep with a longer and more open body?

In my response, I recommend: -Lavender -Phosphatidylserine (IsoPhos) -Podcast with Dr. Zelk on sleep apnea -Pulse oximeters that can measure oximetry while you’re asleep

The first time I met Mike Bledsoe three years ago, he was hunched over in the corner of a busy porch at the PaleoFX convention meditating with a "Headspace" app.

I took one look at this bearded, tattooed Crossfitter and judged him to be yet another exercise and fitness junkie meathead. I was dead wrong. Mike is profound, interesting, chock full of knowledge on everything from plant-based medicine to the fitness business to meditation and breathwork, and (like me) was homeschooled K-12.

He is one of the founders and owners of Faction Strength & Conditioning Home of CrossFit Memphis. He has a degree in Exercise & Sport Science as well as a long list of meaningless certifications that might awe some people but not most and definitely not the people who are probably on this website.

At 19 years of age, Mike thought he should donate his body and mind to the service of his country in the US Navy. It was there that he discovered that he didn’t like taking orders. He did extremely well and had a good time, but being part of a system was not his ideal (and he’s one idealistic dude).

Getting out was scary, but made the entire world available to him. At the ripe old age of 24, he began college at the University of Memphis in the business department but before the first semester could end he changed his major to Health & Human Performance. It was there that he was first introduced to Olympic Weightlifting, by Dr. Brian Schilling.

While in school he regularly donated his body and parts of it to research in the name of science. It was during his senior year that he and a guy named Rob Conner started CrossFit Memphis. Dropping out of school after the first semester of grad school, Mike devoted his time to growing the business and becoming a better coach.

Mike “Matraca” Bledsoe (matraca means chatterbox in portuguese) is most well known for his ability to not shut up, and you'll understand why during our discussion in today's podcast, in which you'll discover:

-Why Mike was so confused the first time he saw a PVC pipe in a gym....

-The strange story of Mike and Ben's meeting at Joe DeSena's farm in Vermont...

-What Mike discovered by going on his first magic mushroom trip in a dog park...

-How psilocybin and ayahuasca rewire neurons in your brains...

-How to find a good shaman if you decide you want to do ayahuasca...

-Mike's one-two combo for morning breathwork and deep tissue work...

-Mike's evening routine, and what he completely avoids for 90 minutes before bed...

-And much more...

Dr. Chris Masterjohn is one smart dude. You'll understand why when you listen to today's podcast episode, which we recorded face-to-face at PaleoFX in Austin, Texas. Chris earned his PhD in Nutritional Science in 2012 from the University of Connecticut at Storrs, where he studied the role of glutathione and dietary antioxidants in regulating the accumulation of methylglyoxal. He served as a postdoctoral research associate from 2012 to 2014 at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he studied interactions between vitamins A, D and K. He is now Assistant Professor of Health and Nutrition Sciences at Brooklyn College in Brooklyn, NY, where he is continuing his research on fat-soluble vitamins. Chris has authored or co-authored ten peer-reviewed publications. His writes a blog, The Daily Lipid, and produces a podcast by the same name. You can also follow his professional work on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, and Snapchat.

During our discussion, you'll discover:

-The #1 thing that affects your circadian rhythm and ability (or inability) to sleep...

-Why some people are more sensitive to blue light than others, and how you can figure out your own sensitivity to blue light...

-Why Chris plays video games at night... -How much sugar you really need (you'll be surprised at the answer)...

-The best time of day to eat carbohydrates...

-The best time of day to eat amino acids, and why you should use a collagen form if you have protein at night...

-Whether eating liver is really toxic...

-The single most important stretch that Chris does with a broom handle...

-Why advanced glycation end products (AGE's) aren't really the biggest culprit when it comes to aging...

-How ketones can actually cause damage to your body...

Meet Raj Bhachu. Raj describes himself as "Pharmacist, Homoeopath, Homotoxicologist, Bioresonance, Bioenergetic and Bioregulatory Medicine Practitioner, Kinesiologist, Scenar, Light and Sound Therapist"...

This obviously unconventional physician, based out of London, is an underground, go-to source for professional athletes, CEO's, celebrities and anyone else who has "tried everything" to fix frustrating issues ranging from cancer to chronic joint pain to nagging injuries. He has some intriguing healing philosophies, biohacks, medical methods, crazy machines and gadgets that he uses - techniques that may seem "woo woo", but he also has some A-List clients, including Jamie Oliver, the Vatican and the right-hand man of Oman. He is technically an integrative medicine specialist, but focuses on holistic, herbal, homeopathic and naturopathic solutions for health. With his background as a pharmacist, he incorporates what he describes as "the best of conventional medicine with natural medicine products and philosophies."

During our fascinating discussion, you'll discover:

-How Raj discovered how to keep his sister alive after she was diagnosed with breast cancer...

-How Raj has helped world-famous chef Jamie Oliver...

-Why fructose and sour foods are a bigger issue than meat when it comes to joint pain and gout...

-One single pressure point in your upper leg that can significantly reduce full body soreness...

-What a typical day of eating looks like for Raj...

-A simple trick you can use to see if the milk you are drinking is truly from grass-fed cows...

-The prevalence of adulterated and fraudulently labeled olive oil imported into the United States...

-Why the type of rice you eat should only Dehradun...

-Why one of the most potent one-two combos you can do for anti-aging and longevity is to drink structured water and then perform infrared therapy...

-How the use of tuning forks, a special type of music and sound therapy can instantly eliminate nagging aches and pains...

-The one type of rice that does not actually contain arsenic, and how to find it...

-Someone mentioned to me that you work with the Vatican and are "the right-hand man of the Oman".

-How something called "EAV/CDS Computerised Health Screening" can be used to identify any health issues in your entire body, including identification of bacteria, parasites, viruses, fungi, moulds and yeasts...

A special kind of compound called "ketone esters" seem to be taking the sports and biohacking world by storm.

Scientific American published the article "Ketone-Based Sports Drink Promises Edge for Athletes", claiming an extra 2% of energy from the use of ketones, which is the equivalent of 60 yards in a 30 minute row, along with a world record broken in a lab test of ketones. Cycling Weekly wrote "Ketones: New energy drink could be next big thing in cycling."...   Tech and Innovation Daily featured the article "The Difference Between Sports Champs and Sports Chumps? Ketones."...   ...and Daily Mail Online reported "Could this elixir hold the key to weight loss? Experts hope it'll also treat diabetes, epilepsy and Alzheimer's"...

...I've even written about my own forays into ketosis for everything from Ironman triathlon to freediving in the article "How To Get Into Ketosis". In today's podcast, I take an even deeper dive into ketosis and specifically focus on a type of ketosis supplement called "ketone salts", also known as "synthetic ketones". My guest is Dr. Richard Veech. Dr. Veech is one of the world’s foremost experts on ketosis, and the Senior Researcher and Laboratory Chief at The National Institutes of Health, the inventor of the ketone ester, and has worked for the last 47 years studying cellular energy and homeostasis. During our discussion, you'll discover: -The fastest way to get into ketosis... -Why humans are the only animal that can truly get into ketosis... -Why Dr. Veech believes that the exogenous ketones currently on the market can be extremely dangerous... -Why a "true" ketone ester is actually a salt free and non racemic (D-bhb) drink that replicates the actual secondary fuel that the body produces during times of starvation... -Why a non-racemic, non-salt version of ketones so expensive ($3000+ a bottle!)... -The truth about something called "NAD" as the next big anti-aging drug... -Which supplements Dr. Veech would use for anti-aging... -Whether or not coconut oil can truly work for curing Alzheimer's as some may claim... -How Dr. Veech received DARPA funding and created a new fuel for the troops... -Dr. Veech's most recommended method of measuring ketones... It seems like at least once a month on a podcast, I'm recommending somebody... ...whether that somebody is having skin issues like acne or eczema, gut pain, brain fog, food allergies or intolerances or constipation or any other signs of immune system or inflammation issues... ...try something called the "Autoimmune Diet".

Problem is, this particular diet, typically meant to be followed for a short period of time until things are healed up, can be confusing when it comes to whether you really need to use it to heal an issue, which foods are "allowed" and which foods aren't, how to transition off the diet back into a "normal" eating style once you've finished the autoimmune diet, and that's exactly why I decided to have Eileen Laird on the show.

Eileen just wrote the book "A Simple Guide to the Paleo Autoimmune Protocol", I read it last week, and it's exactly what it promises, a book simple enough that even someone with brain fog can understand, written like a conversation between friends a simple and contains all of the essential information in a package small enough to throw in your purse or backpack.

Eileen is a writer, podcast host, and self-described "autoimmune warrior", who has reversed rheumatoid arthritis through this diet. Her blog, Phoenix Helix, receives 1 million unique visitors annually and there she features recipes, research and personal stories about the autoimmune experience. She also writes "Autoimmune Answers", a regular column in Paleo Magazine, and is the host of the Phoenix Helix Podcast, the only paleo podcast focused 100% on autoimmune healing.

During our discussion, you'll discover:

-What exactly the autoimmune paleo diet is...

-Why your body can attack itself and what you can do about it...

-What a sample daily meal plan would look like...

-A surprising "substitute" for organ meats...

-Why Eileen isn't a fan of stevia...

-Why it's a myth that the liver stores toxins...

-Three "gentle" ways to detox...

-If you can use nightshades, how you can make meals spicy...

-How to "transition" back to normal eating after following the AIP, and he an order in which you would introduce foods...

-And much more!

Cortisol can be confusing. And frankly, most popular tests for cortisol don't tell you what really need to know... ...things like how fast cortisol gets cleared by your body, what's truly causing high cortisol or low cortisol, how cortisol (and other crucial hormones) are getting created and broken down, and much more... And this is important, because low cortisol leaves you with zero energy, low libido, brain fog, and feeling overtrained and adrenally fatigued, while high cortisol decreases protein synthesis and amino acid uptake, increases proteolysis (protein breakdown) and bone degradation, suppresses parts of the immune system, and increases serum glucose. So you feel pretty crappy when cortisol is low, and while you may feel good when cortisol is high, if cortisol is chronically high, there are some downsides to that too.

Enter the DUTCH test - which is a new way to measure cortisol and much more. So what is the DUTCH test? The DUTCH test is a urine steroid hormone profile that measures hormones and hormone metabolites (called conjugates) in a dried urine sample, and is performed from the comfort of your home. It is the most cutting-edge way to truly see what’s going on when it comes to your hormones, because it doesn’t just measure hormones, but also something called “metabolites”, which are a measurement of hormone production and hormone breakdown. Measuring both hormones and their metabolites can give you or your health care practitioner a much better overall picture of hormone production. For example, a DUTCH urine steroid hormone profile on someone with low salivary cortisol could show normal cortisol production, but high levels of metabolites. In other words, this would indicate that you are producing enough cortisol, but it’s just getting broken down into its metabolites very quickly. There are also some metabolites that are important markers for cancer risk that can only be measured in urine. With serum (blood) and saliva hormone spot-testing, it’s possible to track variations in hormone release throughout the day – and this is a great way to measure how your hormones change during a 24-hour period (your circadian rhythm). In contrast, a standard 24-hour urine collection many physicians use reflects your total hormone output in a 24-hour period. But by using the DUTCH urine steroid test, you get the best of all worlds: blood, saliva and urinary results with just a urine collection.

The DUTCH test measures the following: -Free cortisol -Free cortisone -Creatinine -Tetrahyrdocortisone -a-tetrahydrocortisol -b-tetrahydrocortisol -DHEAs -Progesterone metabolites (a-pregnanediol, b-pregnanediol) -Androgen metabolites (DHEAS, etiocholanolone, androsterone, testosterone, 5a-DHT, 5a-androstanediol, 5b-androstanediol, epi-testosterone) -Estrogen metabolites (estrone, estradiol, estriol, 2-OH-estrone, 4-OH-estrone, 16-OH-estrone, 2-Methoxy-estrone, 2-OH-estradiol) -6-OH-melatonin-sulfate

My guest on today's podcast, Chris Kelly, is an expert when to the DUTCH test. Two years ago Christopher Kelly quit his job at a hedge fund to start Nourish Balance Thrive, a small functional medicine practice for athletes. Chris is a computer scientist and pro mountain biker and he works with two medical doctors, one of whom is also a pro mountain biker, and the other is Dr. Tommy Wood, a biochemist and Ph.D. fellow. He employs a registered nurse, and works with his wife Julia, who is a food scientist.

During our discussion, you'll discover: -What the DUTCH test is and why it is far different than an Adrenal Stress Index... -My own shocking results on the DUTCH test...  -The difference between free and total cortisol, and why you may think that your cortisol is normal when it is actually quite low... -Why some women should not use estrogen natural hormone replacement therapy... -How to know if you should be using a multivitamin... -How chronically high cortisol can cause high blood glucose, brain damage, and muscle wasting (even if you feel great short-term!)... -Things that can elevate cortisol if you are already doing everything "right" in terms of stress control, sleep, proper training recovery, etc... -Whether it's true that high ketosis can cause high cortisol... -What type of hidden infections in your gut or blood can cause high cortisol... -Supplements and herbs you may be taking can increase cortisol dramatically... -Whether there is a link between cannabis, CBD, THC and cortisol... -The most potent supplements or foods or essential oils for decreasing cortisol... -And much more!

Every morning I put about thirty tiny spirulina algae tablets on top of my morning smoothie. Then, in the evening, I often swallow another handful of tiny chlorella tablets to satiate my appetite. After that, I have to rinse out my mouth with water if I want my wife to kiss me, but it's all worth it because... ...regardless of whether you think that us land-dwelling creatures at some point evolved from ocean-dwelling life (a belief espoused by my previous podcast guest Jack Kruse to encourage people spend time in the cold and to eat more seafood), it can’t be denied that fish, turtles, and millions of other large and small inhabitants of water rely on one extremely dense nutrition source for sustenance of life… …algae – particularly from spirulina and chlorella sources. And (especially for vegans and vegetarians), it is the only way to get absorbable, brain-building DHA from a plant-based source. Chia seeds and flax seeds don't get converted into DHA. Algae has 40 vitamins and minerals, more protein then steak, more iron than liver, more calcium than milk, more chlorophyll than kale, more antioxidants than berries and provides so much steady energy and focus, that your performance improves all without chemicals, caffeine, sugar, gluten, soy, animal products or stomach distress. Algae is also an eco-friendly, sustainable crop that releases oxygen while it is growing, produces 100 times more protein per acre than beef and provides the safest, vegan, source of Omega 3. It is grown in fresh water tanks, not the ocean so it protects the ocean’s ecosystem too.

And there's only one calorie in a single tab. My guest on today's podcast is Catharine Arnston, and she puts my own algae consumption to shame, eating 75 pieces of chlorella and 75 pieces of spirulina every day. She holds an MBA from Western’s Ivey School of Business, and a BA in geography and economic development from Queen’s University. She is  a Board Certified Health Counselor from The Institute of Integrative Nutrition and a REIKI Master. She is also an algae expert and the CEO and Chief Scientific Officer of ENERGYbits, a sports nutrition company that sells algae in tablet form to athletes and consumers (click here and use code BEN to save 10% on any of their algae products).

Catharine founded ENERGYbits eight years ago after she became aware of the health and athletic benefits of a plant based diet. When she subsequently learned that algae was the most nutrient dense plant in the world and that Asians had been growing it and benefiting from it for fifty years, she made it her life mission to bring algae into the mainstream so others could benefit from this superfood too.

During our discussion, you'll discover:

-What exactly algae is...

-Which specific form of algae works best for pre or during workouts, and the appropriate hourly dosage...

-Which form of algae has the identical nutritional profile to mother's milk...

-The blue-green pigment in one specific form of algae that has been shown in research to enhance muscle recovery...

-Why, based on RNA and DNA content, sardines and algae are two of the most potent anti-aging foods on the face of the planet...

-How chlorophyll allows the body to produce ATP, even in the absence of calories...

-Which type of algae acts as a natural source of sun protection and prevention of radiation damage...

-And much more!

I first met today's podcast guest at a health conference four years ago. I happened to be sitting across the dinner table from him, and watched as he pulled out the mysterious leather satchel that I'd seen him carrying all weekend long. He opened the satchel to reveal tiny bottles of black oil, dropper bottles full of dark, green algae-like goo, mineral salts, and all kinds of other strange substances which he proceeded to use to "dress-up" his dinner.

Later, I learned his name - Ian Clark - and invited him on my podcast to talk about that green algae goo, which turned out to be marine phytoplankton. I also learned that back in 2004, at the age of 46, when he was hit with a series of life threatening health issues, obesity, and a prediction from physicians that he only had about two years left to live, Ian refused to accept life’s traditional circumstances and decided to pursue more natural methods of restoring perfect health.

Ian began traveling all over the world to discover strange, new health products while developing relationships with top labs and researchers in the fields of natural healing. Now operating out of a farm in Canada with his five sons and the support of an entire team of innovators at Activation Products Canada and Activation Germany, his company has become a significant manufacturer of unique products like magnesium spray, black seed oil, marine phytoplankton and much more.

In today's podcast with Ian, you'll discover:

-The genetic illness that nearly killed Ian back in 2004 and led to his journey of interest in natural healing...

-How you can personally "equip" your body to deal with mold and fungus (and the shocking link between mold, fungus and cancer)...

-How Ian has created his own micro-universe to heal his body...

-One specific pose you can hold for 30 minutes a day for two weeks to "reboot" your autonomic nervous system...

-The small exercise machine that Ian swears by and keeps in both his home and his office...

-A new form of fasting called "dry fasting"...

-What Ian uses as a "smart drug" to stay hyper-awake and alert...

-The reason Ian sprays his entire abdomen with magnesium prior to bed at night...

-Why Ian travels everywhere with a black leather bag, and what he keeps in it... -And much more!

A few months ago, I released the article "Dark & Dirty Secrets Of The Wine Industry, Four Ways To Make Wine Healthier, and What Kind Of Wine Fit People Should Drink."

In it, I detailed the serious issues with arsenic, overpricing, lack of sustainability, high levels of sulfites, amines and ochratoxins, boatloads of sugars, high pH levels (that increase the possibility of contamination by unwanted organisms), a less than stellar taste, plastic polyethylenes and many other problems plaguing the modern wine industry - and causing many people (including my wife) to get headaches or poor sleep from a nightly glass of wine.

At the end of that post, I highlight that I now drink a new kind of healthy wine called "FitVineWine", and in today's podcast, I interview Mark Warren, co-founder of FitVineWine, a national level black belt competitor in TaeKwonDo, a Crossfitter and of course, as a wine enthusiast and father of two boys, a man after my own heart.

During our discussion, you'll discover:

-Why there are shocking levels of additives and other fillers in most modern wines...

-How most wineries add sugar and grape concentrate to wines to adjust the pH (and why pH is so important)...

-Why many wines are filtered through wheat and contain gluten...

-Whether you need to be concerned about mold in wine...

-How you can concentrate the amount of antioxidants like resveratrol, polyphenols and proanthocyanidins in grapes...

-What it means for a wine to be "biodynamic" or "organically" farmed...

-Why many wines are over-irrigated and why wineries should use less water, not more...

-Why wine grapes should be grown at higher, cooler elevations...

-Why people really aren't allergic to sulfites in wine, and why it's something else altogether...

This is a special bonus podcast episode with the guy you get to meet and hang out with if you come to the July 8, 9 and 10 SEALFit 20x event at my house!

Two years ago, I reported on my experience at the brutal SEALFit Kokoro camp, a 60+ hour crucible you can read more about at "26 Mile Night Hikes, Surf Swim Torture, 450 Pound Giant Logs And More: What To Expect at SEALFit Kokoro Camp And 9 Ways To Get More Tough."

In that article, I mention a guy named "Lance Cummings". Coach Lance's snarling face struck fear deep into the heart of every Kokoro participant in my class, and he is well known for being the man who dishes out extreme amounts of suffering and hardship for anybody brave enough to step into Kokoro.

But there's much more to coach Lance Cummings than simply being a man who could kill you with his pinky finger.

Technically, Lance is director of training at SEALFit.

Before that, retired from Active Duty Navy Service with 30 years of combined Active and Reserve service. After graduating BUD/s Class 124 he deployed overseas in support of US Foreign Policy with six different SEAL teams on both the east and west coast. He served at the Naval Special Warfare Center as a Basic Underwater/SEAL (BUD/s) instructor where he earned his Master Training Specialist classification. He also worked several State Department Security Team contracts with private employers during his time in the Naval Reserves.

He left Active Duty in 1995 to pursue a Doctorate of Chiropractic degree, graduating in 2000 from Life Chiropractic College in Atlanta. While running a Chiropractic practice in Ga. and continuing to serve in the SEAL Reserves, he was recalled to Active Duty in January 2002 to deploy to the Middle East in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. He made 7 subsequent Middle East deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq with three different SEAL Teams as well as contracting with Blackwater Security.

As the Training Officer at Naval Special Warfare Group 1, in charge of West Coast SEAL Team operational training and readiness, he helped establish the Human Performance Initiative, a tactical readiness assessment and evaluation testing system utilized by every SEAL team today.

Since retiring from the Navy in 2011, Lance has coached at SEALFIT Integrative Training, where he, Mark Divine, and numerous SEALs and selected civilian coaches conduct multi-day Academies, 20X, Kokoro Camps and custom team events, both locally and internationally.

His athletic accomplishments include hundreds of triathlons, multi-day adventure races (he once paddled from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean through the Panama Canal in 15 hours), endurance horse racing, and he has been a member of World Championship Teams in Military Pentathlon, Naval Pentathlon, Outrigger Canoe and Dragon Boat racing. He has won several Marksmanship awards in inter-service competition in both handgun and carbine categories, and also competes in Stand Up Paddle Board Racing, archery and mountain biking.

He continues his passion for Chiropractic, both with people and animal patients. He is certified in Cold Laser Therapy, Functional Mobility, Thermal Imaging, and is a registered Emergency Medical Technician.   His wife is a practicing Emergency Physician, and he also has nine year old twins.

His certifications and experiences include:

Honor Graduate, US Army Master Fitness Trainer Academy SEAL Team Training Officer Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician NAUI Scuba Instructor US Navy Master Training Specialist Certified Veterinary Chiropractitioner Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist Doctorate in Chiropractic, Life University, Marietta GA BS Education, Southern Illinois University American College of Sports Medicine Fitness Instructor TRX Suspension Training Level 1, 2 and Sports Rehabilitation Trainer Functional Movement Systems (FMS) Level II Certified Structural Functional Movement Assessment Certified US Military Pentathlon Athlete US Navy Pentathlon Athlete USA Mens Dragon Boat Team 2011, 2013, 2015 – Team physician and competitor Outrigger Canoe USA/World Championship Teams

So the guy is a wealth of knowledge on not just survival and warfare, but also fitness, taking care of aging and injured bodies, pushing through pain and much more. During our discussion, you’ll discover:

-What it feels like for Lance to be "the man" who strikes fear in the heart of all Kokoro participants...

-When Lance decided he wanted to be a SEAL...

-Whether Lance thinks he is simply "hardwired" differently from a genetics standpoint, or whether something happened during his childhood that made him a high achiever...

-Why Lance got into pentathlon (and this crazy Brazilian penthathlon video)...

-Lance's story of paddling from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean through the Panama Canal in 15 hours...

I get tons of questions about my daily routine. Do I meditate and if so, how? On which days do I do which workouts? How many cups of coffee are "acceptable"? When do I time alcohol intake? Do I have a special journaling routine?

You get the idea. And I've already revealed all this and much more in previous articles... ...including:

-My morning routine

-My afternoon routine

-My evening routine

But in today's podcast, I interview Craig Ballantyne, author of the brand new book "The Perfect Day Formula: How to Own the Day and Control Your Life". Why did I want to get Craig's perspective? Because Craig is one accomplished dude... Craig is a productivity and success transformation coach from Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He has been a contributor to Men's Health magazine since 2000, and his articles have also appeared in Women’s Health, Oxygen, GQ, Maxim, National Geographic, Men’s Fitness and Muscle and Fitness Hers, amongst many others. His articles have also been featured on Inc.com, LifeHacker.com, and Telegraph.co.uk. In 2001, Craig created the popular home workout program, Turbulence Training, and in 2013 he created the Home Workout Revolution bodyweight exercise program. Over 100,000 men and women have used his 6 Minutes to Skinny weight loss system since 2014. Craig is also the founder of the Certified Turbulence Training Program, certifying trainers from all corners of the globe. He holds an annual Turbulence Training Summit every year for fitness experts to become better trainers and get more clients so they make more money and live the Perfect Life. Craig’s online success has led him to create books and a coaching program to show other gurus how to take their ideas and help thousands of people. He holds seminars around the world, and he teaches at the annual SovereignAcademy.org camp every summer in Lithuania. Craig has had to overcome many obstacles on his journey to success, and his toughest battle was fighting crippling anxiety attacks. He finally discovered how to beat them with his 5 Pillars of Transformation, and today Craig shows men and women how to use the 5 Pillars to lose 10 to 75 pounds, get a raise and make more money, find the love of their life, and overcome any obstacle in the way of success. On his website, EarlytoRise.com, you’ll find his daily essays on success, productivity, time management, fitness, weight loss and self-improvement.

During our discussion, you'll discover:

-What it means to "control the morning"...

-What Craig thinks about the research that shows some people are better in the evening vs. the morning...

-How Craig meshes going to bed so early with social life...

-How Craig deals with travel potentially throwing him out of his routine...

-Why Craig avoids alcohol before bedtime and caffeine after 1pm...

-How Craig deals with e-mail, and the technique he uses to avoid e-mail until noon...

-Craig's 10-2-3-1-0 formula for a perfect night of sleep...

-Why Craig calls the afternoon "chaotic", and what you can do about it...

-Why a story of "the fisherman and the crabs" is important for you to know...

-The #1 action step you can take today to take control of your time and own your day...

-And much more!

Listener Q&A:

As compiled, deciphered, edited and sometimes read by Rachel Browne, the NEW Podcast Sidekick.

When You Shouldn't Get A Blood Test

Phil says: His wife is 54 and has a long list of health issues, many of which developed later in life. From food allergies and asthma to aching knees to swollen fingers in the morning, which she describes as Mickey Mouse hands. All of her doctors just want to treat her symptoms but he wants to treat the causes. Would you recommend a functional wellness test like WellnessFX and if so, which one would you choose? Or would you recommend something else?

In my response, I recommend: -Cyrex Lab Testing -Gut Testing -Heavy Metal Testing -Autoimmune Paleo Diet -Functional Medicine Practitioner Which Massage Oil Is Healthiest?

Sherry says: She loves the show, she’s been listening for the past 6 months and she hooked. She’s going to a bunch of the conferences you're speaking at. She’s a personal trainer, group instructor and massage therapist. She’s wondering what the absorption level is of massage oil into your body. What are the pros and cons of of absorbing all that oil into the skin if she’s massaging 6 hours per day?

In my response, I recommend: -New Greenfield Anti-Aging Skin Serum Ben's Bug Out Bag

Ryan says: He’s from Mobile, Alabama, and he’s got a fun question. He’s one of those Waco conspiracy theorist type - people who believes the sustainability of our financial system won’t remain much longer. He was hoping you could put together a list of top 10 items, foods, remedies that he can keep and start storming that will help them optimize or maintain health during times of hardship.

In my response, I recommend: -Survival Magazine -Survival bracelet -Thieves essential oil -Cinnamon essential oil -Sprouting Seeds -Actionwipes -Ambronite -Chlorella -Curcumin -Portable Structured Water Filter -Healthy Chocolate (e.g. Bulletproof) How Women Can Fix Metabolic Damage From Overtraining

Jennifer says: She’s from Oceanside, California. She has a question about increasing thyroid function once damage had been done from a low carb diet. She’s was playing around with nutrition and trying to get leaner and depleted her thyroid function fairly significantly. She has a doctor of nutrition and nutrition coach helping her but in the interim, if you have any advice on how to use carbs to help reset her metabolism and get her back on track and what types of carbs to use, she’d appreciate it. She’s feeling really slow and not so good...it's not a fun feeling. She knows she can fix it in a month of two with help but if there’s anything we can provide in the interim she’d appreciate it. She thanks you for your excellent advice, and products and other things, she benefits so much from it. She’s a physician herself and she often passes along information to her patients, other physicians and friends.

Ever heard of Soylent? Three years ago, it popped up on a blog post entitled "Why I Stopped Eating Food", and in it, author Rob Rinehart introduced a special meal replacement powder he had formulated that he claimed, among other things, would allow you to be in peak mental and physical condition for less than $2/day, would not spoil for months, does not require refrigeration, and would allow a full spectrum of nutrients to get mainlined into your bloodstream without you even needing to poop. Needless to say, my eyebrow was raised when I first heard about the stuff. And sure enough, the crazy, space-age formulation was later revealed to have some serious issues, including huge amounts of maltodextrin sugar, oxidized vegetable oils, huge amounts of soy lecithin, sucralose artificial sweetener, rancid fish oil and much more. Bummer. But at the same time, as a global traveler and busy man, I'm still intrigued with the concept of having something that delivers all your nutrients in one shot, is easy to transport, costs less than five bucks a serving and is environmentally friendly.

And that was why, when I reported on what I used to fuel my body during the recent, brutal Spartan Agoge crucible, I mentioned that I was experimenting with a fast, drinkable (or eatable) meal replacement called "Ambronite".

Here are the ingredients in Ambronite: -organic oats -organic coconut -organic lucuma -organic chlorella -wild bilberry -wild sea-buckthorn -organic brown rice protein -organic stinging nettle -organic rice bran -nutritional yeast -organic spinach -organic spirulina -organic almond -organic flaxseed -organic apple -mineral salt -organic brazil nut -organic blackcurrant Simo Suoheimo, is the co-founder of Ambronite, my guest on today's podcast, and a guy I had plenty of time to hang out with when I was in Finland last year for the Biohackers Summit. He is an entrepreneur, foodie, crowdfunding jedi (Ambronite set a new crowdfunding world record for a food product IndieGoGo), and self-described "serial optimist". He is an avid hiker, forager, speaker and avid global adventurer on a quest to unlimit life and help people exceed themselves.

During our discussion, you'll discover:

-Simo's weekly practice of "ice swimming" and why he does it...

-Why you can pick edible, wild foods just about anywhere in Finland...

-The one berry that has dozens of times the nutrient density of a blueberry...

-How to turn a food into a powder without oxidizing it or exposing it to harsh heat...

-How to make a meal replacement powder that can sit on a shelf, without compromising nutritional integrity...

-The reason that the flavor of a meal replacement powder might change from batch to batch...

-A berry that, unlike most fruits, contains high amounts of vitamin K...

-How to use Ambronite for ketosis...

-And much more!

Finally below are the Ambronite ingredient details... Oats Oats (Avena sativa) are a great source of complex carbohydrates which help to maintain normal blood sugar and sustained-release energy. They are rich in minerals such as manganese, molybdenum, phosphorus and magnesium as well as several B-group vitamins. Unlike many other plants oats contain soluble fibres called β-glucans that slow down energy release during digestion. Oats also contain essential polyunsaturated omega fatty acids. We use oats that have been flattened, pre-cooked, dried and milled into a fine powder to ensure cold-water solubility and the bioavailability of nutrients. Our oats are grown in Finland. Almonds Almonds (Prunus amygdalus) are a good source of vitamin E and have a good fatty acid profile of mono- and polyunsaturated essential fats. They also contain over 20g of protein per 100g as well as significant amounts of micronutrients like magnesium, calcium, copper, manganese, potassium and biotin. Besides almonds contain several non-vital but useful substances including polyphenols and phytosterols. Almonds are blanched before milling. The variety of almonds is Valencias and they come from organic producers in Spain. Brown rice Whole grain brown rice (Oryza sativa) is used as a source of protein. The protein is extracted from the bio-fermented and sprouted whole grain rice in low-temperatures using plant-based enzymes to sustain all natural micronutrients. Rice is grown on pure soil in Vietnam or Cambodia and the protein manufactured in modern facilities in China. Production is done using 100% natural processes without any nasty additives or pesticides. This brown rice protein has an excellent amino acid profile and up to 89% of protein. It contains eight out of nine essential amino acids and nine nonessential amino acids as well as a good amount of essential minerals such as iron. Coconut Coconut (Cocos nucifera) is rich in minerals containing magnesium, potassium, zinc, iron and calcium. It also has trace amounts of several B vitamins. Because of the fibre-richness and low glycemic index coconut provides stable energy without sugar-crash. Besides nutrition coconut brings natural sweetness and creaminess to the recipe. The coconut flour we use comes from organic farmers in Philippines which is the largest coconut producer in the world after Indonesia and India. Flax seed Flaxseed is a functional food, and a rich source of fiber-related compounds called lignans. Lignans are unique polyphenols that possess hypoglycemic, hypolipidemic and powerful antioxidant properties. Flaxseeds are the number one source of omega-3 fatty acid, which is known to be important for human brain function. On average, 100 grams of flaxseed amount to 28 grams of fiber, 41 grams of fats and 20 grams of protein. Lucuma Lucuma (Pouteria lucuma) has significant amounts of B vitamins as well as iron, calcium and phosphorus. It also contains β-Carotene which is a pre-form of vitamin A. The low glycemic index makes lucuma a good source of stable energy from carbohydrates. Besides nutrition the fruit adds nice flavor the recipe. The fruit origins from the Peruvian andes and that also where we source our lucuma. Stinging Nettle Stinging nettle (Urtica dioica) is a particularly great source of calcium as well as many other micronutrients such as vitamins A, C and K. This rare herb is almost five times richer in calcium than regular milk. It also contains significant amount of chlorophyll which is a non-essential but beneficial phytonutrient also known as the green pigment found in plants. Nettle grows wild and takes very little to cultivate making it sustainable source of nutrition. It also adds mild herbal flavour to the recipe. We use nettle grown in Finland or Hungary depending on the availability. Apple Apple (Malus domestica) contains vitamin C and has high fiber content. Its peel is high in antioxidants, polyphenols and phytochemicals. We use an apple powder made from complete organic apples with peel, from US or Europe, depending on availability and quality. Being a minor compound in the recipe, its main role is taste, blending well to the oats with lucuma, adding a few grams of fructose to the carbohydrate profile. Rice Bran Rice bran solubles or tocotrienols are the nutritional powerhouse of the rice (Oryza sativa) grain containing significant amounts of vitamin E. Tocotrienols are also rich in protein, B-group vitamins, and selenium as well as many non-essential but beneficial substances like coenzyme Q10, alpha lipoic acid, flavonoids and glutathione peroxidase. The powder is produced by the fermentation of whole grain rice grain located between the shell and the bran, which contains nearly all the nutrients in rice. Besides nutrition rice bran solubles bring natural creaminess to the recipe. Our rice bran powder is produced in the USA. Chlorella Chlorella (Chlorella pyrenoidosa) is a single-celled freshwater algae that is full of essential nutrients. The plant contains vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, C, E, and K. In addition chlorella contains vitamin D and B12. It also contains calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, phosphorus, iodine and other minerals as well as essential amino and fatty acids. Chlorella is richer in chlorophyll than any other plant and has been considered as a complete food by some nutritionists. We use special chlorella which cell walls have been cracked using a high-pressure jet spray to improve digestibility and nutrient bioavailability. Our chlorella is cultivated in the Inner-Mongolia border of China outside large cities. The area is known for its good water quality, sufficient sunlight, non-polluted air, and abundant natural alkaline resources. Chlorella is grown inside greenhouses in pools filled with pure water from the depths of 500 meter streaming from the surrounding mountains. These conditions enable cultivation of our high-quality chlorella containing only very low-amounts of heavy-metals and other toxins. To preserve precious micronutrients for your body, our chlorella is raw and dried in controlled temperatures to avoid exposure to heat above 45 °C (113 °F). It is certified organic by accredited Ecocert certification body. Nutritional Yeast Nutritional yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) is a great source of B-complex vitamins containing naturally seven out of eight essential B vitamins. It is also rich in essential minerals such as magnesium, calcium, zinc and iron. Nutritional yeast is made out the the same species of yeast used for brewing but it is carefully deactivated and dried to keep the nutritional richness and make it easily digestible for the body. Besides essential vitamins and minerals nutritional yeast contain glutamic acid which is a non-essential amino acid important for learning and memory. Nutritional yeast also adds gentle creamy-cheesy flavour to the recipe. Our nutritional yeast is produced in Finland or USA. Mineral Salt Mineral salt is a good source of potassium and iodine. It also contains healthy amount of sodium to maintain good mineral balance in the body. Potassium and sodium are electrolytes that maintain the fluid balance in the body and are important for the heart, muscles and brain to function properly. Besides the contribution of essential micronutrients salt underlines the natural flavour of other ingredients. Brazil Nut Brazil nuts (Bertholletia excelsa) are exceptionally rich in selenium and contains good amount of other nutrients like niacin (B3), vitamin E and magnesium as well as amino acids and multiple essential fatty acids. Besides essential nutrients they contain carotenoids, phytosterols and phytic acid which are known to be beneficial for health. Brazil nuts are native to South-American rainforest. Our Brazil nuts come from Bolivia which produces approximately half of the worlds harvest. Bilberry Bilberries (Vaccinium myrtillus) are exceptionally nutritious super berries that grow wild in Northern Europe. They are rich in vitamins A and C and contain traces of several B-complex vitamins as well as multiple essential minerals such as potassium, calcium and magnesium. In addition to essential nutrients bilberries are very rich in flavonoids and have two times the amount of antioxidants than blueberries and three times that of an apple measured ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) index. The antioxidants in wild berries have shown to be bioavailable for the human body. The bilberries we use have grown wild above Polar Circle in the northern Finland, hand-picked and carefully dried and powdered in low temperatures to preserve nutrients. Spinach Spinach (Spinacia oleracea) contains high amounts of vitamins such as vitamin A, K and folate. It is also high in iron and calcium, but also non-essential substances such as antioxidants. Our spinach powder is made by drying and milling it in low temperatures. It is organic and raw and comes from organic farms in Germany. Blackcurrant Blackcurrant (Ribes nigrum) is an extremely good source of vitamin C containing up to four times more of it than oranges. It also contains traces of several B-group vitamins as well as minerals magnesium, manganese, iron and calcium. Like many berries blackcurrant also hold non-essential phytonutrient polyphenols and phytosterols. It is native to northern Europe and the berries grow in a shrub. Our blackcurrant berry powder is carefully manufactured in low temperatures in Finland. Sea-buckthorn Sea-buckthorns (Hippophae rhamnoides) are one of the richest plant based sources of vitamin C and can contains even five times more of it than oranges. These small orange superberries are also dense in potassium, magnesium, calcium and phosphorus as well as vitamin K. Besides they contain non-essential but beneficial omega-7 fatty acids (palmitoleic acid) and carotenoids. Our sea-buckthorns come from Finland or Estonia. Spirulina Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) is a nutritional powerhouse full of essential nutrients. It contains up to 71g of protein per 100g including all nine essential amino acids as well as nine non-essential. Besides it is dense in micronutrients being a rich source of six B-complex vitamins, choline, and vitamins C, E and K as well as a number of essential trace minerals such as iron, magnesium and zinc. It is also loaded with non-essential substances like chlorophyll and antioxidants. We have carefully selected the most qualified organic producer in China. The spirulina in Ambronite is cultivated in the Inner-Mongolia border of China outside large cities. The area is known for its good water quality, sufficient sunlight, non-polluted air, and abundant natural alkaline resources. Spirulina is grown inside greenhouses in pools filled with pure water from the depths of 500 meter streaming from the surrounding mountains. These conditions enable cultivation of our high-quality spirulina containing only very low-amounts of heavy-metals and other toxins. To preserve precious micronutrients for your body, our spirulina is raw and dried in controlled temperatures to avoid exposure to heat above 45 °C (113 °F). It is certified organic by accredited Ecocert certification body.

After being introduced to it by music mogul Rick Rubin, I've been practicing transcendental meditation (TM) for the past year.

Why? More than 380 peer-reviewed research studies on the TM technique have been published in over 160 scientific journals. These studies were conducted at many US and international universities and research centers, including Harvard Medical School, Stanford Medical School, Yale Medical School, and UCLA Medical School...and they have shown irrefutable evidence that TM reduces insomnia, stress, anxiety, depression, blood pressure, cholesterol, congestive heart failure, atherosclerosis/stroke, free radicals, blood sugar, diabetes, pain, along with higher levels of brain functioning, longevity, sleep quality and much more.

The guy who taught me everything I know about TM is named Philip Land. Philip has been practicing TM for the past 40 years. But he's no woo-woo, robe-clad, Eastern mysticist. I'd instead describe Philip as a bad-ass, hunting, redneck hippie family man. But he's taught TM all over the globe, worked with celebrities and high profile politicians, and also worked in medicine, computed tomography, radiation technology, craniosacral therapy, hunting instruction, shooting, wilderness survival, and much more.

So he is one very interesting man. And during our discussion, you'll discover: -How Philip, a "redneck hunting instructor" got involved in TM...

-A very easy-to-understand explanation of what TM is...

-Why folks like Oprah Winfrey, Jerry Seinfeld, Katy Perry, and Russell Brand practice transcendental meditation (TM) daily...

-Whether you need to be religious to practice TM...

-What a TM mantra is... -How I used TM during the Spartan Agoge...

-The surprising changes that occur in blood or bio markers in response to TM...

-The brain wave pattern and EEG response to TM...

-How TM can change sleep patterns and sleep cycles, and even allow you to get by on less sleep...

-The difference between TM and "biohacks" like PEMF, transcutaneous stimulation, meditation apps, etc...

-Whether you really have to do TM every day...

-The best way to learn TM...

-And much more!

I read plenty of books about gut health, immune system, and alternative medicine, but one of the best books I discovered in the past several months is entitled "The Hidden Half of Nature: The Microbial Roots of Life and Health". When authors David R. Montgomery and Anne Biklé decide to restore life into their barren yard by creating a garden, dead, barren dirt threatens their dream. As a cure, they feed their soil a steady diet of organic matter. The results impress them. In short order, the much-maligned microbes transform their bleak yard into a flourishing Eden. Beneath their feet, beneficial microbes and plant roots continuously exchange a vast array of essential compounds. Dave and Anne soon learn that this miniaturized commerce is central to botanical life’s master strategy for defense and health. They are abruptly plunged further into investigating microbes when Biklé is diagnosed with cancer. Here, they discover an unsettling truth. An armada of bacteria (our microbiome) sails the seas of our gut, enabling our immune system to sort microbial friends from foes. But when our gut microbiome goes awry, our health can go with it. The authors also discover startling insights into the similarities between plant roots and the human gut. We are not what we eat. We are all―for better or worse―the product of what our microbes eat. This leads to a radical reconceptualization of our relationship to the natural world: by cultivating beneficial microbes, we can rebuild soil fertility and help turn back the modern plague of chronic diseases. The Hidden Half of Nature reveals how to transform agriculture and medicine―by merging the mind of an ecologist with the care of a gardener and the skill of a doctor. The book, in which they highlight this journey, is a riveting exploration of how microbes are transforming the way we see nature and ourselves―and could revolutionize agriculture and medicine. Prepare to set aside what you think you know about yourself and microbes. Good health―for people and for plants―depends on Earth’s smallest creatures.

You're about to learn the story of our tangled relationship with microbes and their potential to revolutionize agriculture and medicine, from garden to gut. During our discussion, you'll discover:

-What exactly a microbe is, and how it's far more complex than you'd actually think...

-The strange "home-brew" Anne dumped into her garden to change the soil from dead to living...

-How microbes tie into the ancient art of making wine...

-How modern, conventional agriculture is completing changing how soil and microbes interact, and how this is affecting the quality of the food that we eat...

-The ideal scenario for growing food, from a soil standpoint...

-Why the colon so important when it comes to the immune system...

-What to eat if you want to increase the microbial diversity of the colon...

-The fascinating parallel between the root system of a plant and the gut of the human being…

-And much more! Be sure to check out Dave and Anne's websites, including:

Meet Ray Maker (pictured above). Via his website "DC Rainmaker", and his podcast by the same name, Ray single-handedly tests, reviews and reports on nearly every self-quantification device that hits the market, including the latest devices from established players like Garmin and Polar, along with new companies like Strava, Zwift, Stages Cycling, 4iiii, and other brands that attract the attention of both the tech world, the bike market, the triathlon industry and beyond - often testing prototypes months before a product is brought to market.

Ray often operates beneath the radar of the traditional, brick-and-mortar, ink-on-paper side of the bike world, but shockingly, his site, which he runs entirely by himself, is the sixth most popular bicycling website on the planet. He's even been listed in Runner's World as one of "The 50 Most Influential People In Running". Ray is an avid triathlete and runner, and despite operating DC Rainmaker still works full-time in the IT industry, in a position that requires him to travel the world constantly. He's an American, but now lives in Paris, France, with his wife. His far-flung trips are part of the appeal of his website, as he reports not just on technology, but also on his adventures running, biking and swimming around the globe. A true fitness geek, Ray puts the gadgets he tests through rigorous evaluations, reporting on the nitty gritty details, flaws, benefits, pros, cons, and even delivers the first-hand reports on the latest firmware updates for various devices. He does things like mount multiple power meters on his bike, or wears several heart monitors at once, and often delivers intricate multi-thousand word reports and reviews on every device he tests.

During our discussion, you'll discover:

-Ray's crazy story of testing the waterproof potential of an Apple watch...

-How Ray makes money on his website by reviewing devices...

-The coolest piece of self-quantification technology Ray has ever used...

-Ray's most recommended piece of technology...

-How much of racing and training technology is just the 'same ol', vs. truly groundbreaking technology...

-What a device must do to break the mold and fit into that ground-breaking category...

-How Ray keeps from being "biased" by products he receives and reviews...

-What Ray uses to track sleep...

-The effects of alcohol on training...

-Ray's thoughts on the potential "biological danger" of bluetooth, wireless and wifi devices?

-Whether Ray just "unplugs" and go by feel...

-Ray's #1 recommended vacation and must-see spot for active people or athletes...

-What Ray thinks is the next biggest trend in athlete quantification...

He's wondering if you have any biohacks for survival, say you have nothing on your back but a backpack, what would some biohacks be? Ie. Creating a fire and using the charcoal to clean your system afterwards? It would be cool to hear what you have to say about this and would be great if you got a survivalist on the podcast in future!

I'll admit it: I'm a complete nerd when it comes to using a dizzying array of bodywork tools, massage and deep tissue manipulation, mobility methods and more.

I wake up every morning and "hit" my body with everything from a Rumble Roller to mobility bands to vibrating massage devices and more. It's like some kind of medieval torture experiment. So I was pretty excited when I got a chance to read a brand new book about how to create a "map" of your own connective tissue and then erase pain and / or increase mobility in specific areas of your body using that map.

The name of the book is "The MELT Method: A Breakthrough Self-Treatment System to Eliminate Chronic Pain, Erase the Signs of Aging, and Feel Fantastic in Just 10 Minutes a Day!". In The MELT Method, manual therapist and exercise physiologist Sue Hitzmann describes a self-treatment system to combat chronic pain and erase the effects of aging and active living, in as little as ten minutes a day, all using techniques that can be done in your own home and taking advantage of the body's natural restorative properties. Sue has personally trained more than 1,300 professionals worldwide and is a leading presenter for national organizations such as IDEA, ECA, and PMA, and a CEU provider for ACE, AFAA, NASM, PMA, and NCBTMB. She has appeared on The Dr. Oz Show, The Rachael Ray Show, and Live! with Regis and Kelly, and the internationally translated MELT Method book has been featured in magazines such as SELF, More, and Prevention. I've been trying the methods in her book on areas like my low back, my hands, my feet and my elbows and they work with surprising efficacy, so I had to get her on the show!

During this episode, you'll discover... -Sue's fascinating story of how she began digging into fascia and connective tissue and its role in pain and movement... -What Sue discovered while dissecting cadavers and learning the truth about fascia that isn't taught in exercise science classes... -The concept of "fascial dehydration", and why it is much more than just a matter of drinking more water... -What most foam rolling and deep tissue work neglects... -Why you shouldn't necessarily use the hardest foam roller you can find... -How to "glide", "shear" and "rinse" specific areas of your body... -Why doing a "rest and assess" prior to doing the MELT method can enhance results... -And much more...

Do you have questions, comments or feedback for Sue or I about the MELT method or anything else we discuss in this episode? Leave your thoughts at BenGreenfieldFitness.com and one of us will reply!

Several weeks ago, I published an article entitled "A Tiny, 1/2 Ounce Piece Of Game-Changing Sleep Technology (And How To Use PEMF For Sleep)". In that article, I introduced a brand new device called the SomniResonance® DeltaSleeper (affectionally known as the "SR1") that am now placing on my collarbone each night before I go to sleep and also using if I wake up in the night, and even using for naps and on airplanes.

The results have been nothing less than astounding. My sleep "efficiency", as measured by the Oura sleep tracking device, has jumped from 81% up to 97%. I have gone from an average of 52 minutes of wake time during a night of sleep down to 28 minutes. My deep sleep has risen from 33 minutes per night to 2 hours and 22 minutes. My sleep latency (how long it takes to fall asleep) has gone from an average of 16 minutes down to a super-fast 7 minutes. My heart rate during a night of sleep has dropped from 39 beats per minute down to 36 beats per minute.

The list goes on and on. I plan on a comprehensive article in the future that shows all of these sleep hacking results and delves more deeply into sleep quantification... ...but in the meantime, Michael Lares - the investor, diver, outdoor enthusiast and friend who introduced me to the SR1 - is my guest on today's podcast, and in this episode, you're going to discover:

-How the SR1 works...

-How to use the SR1 for migraines and headaches...

-The difference between the SR1 and other PEMF devices (like the EarthPulse)...

-Where you should place the SR1 during sleep...

-Whether you can use the SR1 multiple times during the night...

-Whether the SR1 is safe for children...

-How it works for adrenal fatigue and anxiety...

-Which meds should or should not be combined with the SR1...

-Which countries the SR1 is legal in...

-How to try an SR1 without any risk...

-And much more!

Did Lindsey Lohan really get drunk on kombucha? How much caffeine and sugar is in kombucha? Can you eat that slimy scoby thing that floats to the top? How can you make kombucha more "bubbly" if you're making it yourself? Can kombucha be used for things other than just drinking? Is it safe to mix kombucha with cocktails or (as I do) to top it off with a bit of vodka now and then?

We're going to tackle all these topics and much more in today's interview with Hannah Crum, author of the brand new title "The Big Book of Kombucha: Brewing, Flavoring, and Enjoying the Health Benefits of Fermented Tea" Hannah joined me last year for the podcast episode "Kombucha: Everything You’ve Always Wanted To Know But Were Afraid To Ask.", but since then, she's written the quintessential guide to all things kombucha, and what I would consider to be the #1 resource for anybody who wants to know everything there is to know about kombucha. With more than 400 recipes, including 268 unique flavor combinations, you can get exactly the taste you want — for a fraction of the store-bought price. This complete guide shows you how to do it from start to finish, with illustrated step-by-step instructions and troubleshooting tips. The book also includes information on the many health benefits of kombucha, fascinating details of the drink’s history, and recipes for delicious foods and drinks you can make with kombucha (including some irresistible cocktails!). Hannah Crum is known as The Kombucha Mamma, and is founder of Kombucha Kamp, the most visited website in the world for Kombucha information, recipes and advice. Hannah is also an industry journalist & Master Brewer, directly mentoring thousands of new and experienced Kombucha brewers and providing consultation services for Kombucha start-ups since 2007. BenGreenfieldFitness.com/breadhead Confession: I eat bread a few times a week. Mostly, it's my wife Jessa's mouth-watering, homemade sourdough bread. But lately, I saw a documentary got me thinking a bit more about bread, how much you can "get away" with eating, how often you can or should eat it, and whether it affects parts of your body other than your gut, even if you don't have something like celiac disease or gluten intolerance.

The documentary is called "Bread Head", and in it, 33 year old director Max Lugavere explores the impact of our diets and lifestyles on brain health. Max's "vlogs" have garnered thousands of fans, and in each of these, he delivers bite-sized blasts of easily digestible information on health science topics ranging from intermittent fasting to the microbiome. You can check them out here. Back in college, I interned at Duke University and worked with an NFL football player named Willie Roaf. I remember being completely flabbergasted at how this enormous man who was over 6'5" and weighed over 325 pounds could move like a cat, with extreme speed and precision and power while simultaneously generating enormous amounts of strength.

Today, I interview two experts who fill me in on some of the secrets that collegiate athletes are using to prepare for the NFL combine, the same underground tactics used by athletes in the NFL who are complete physical specimens. I wanted to pick these experts' brains about to learn how these NFL athletes train, how they recover, how they sleep and more…and in this episode you're going to get a sneak peek. My guests are two specialists that train and fuel these elite football athletes: Michelle Riccardi and Denis Logan.

Michelle Riccardi, MS, RD, CSSD, Sports Performance Dietitian has 18 years of experience providing sports nutrition services to professional and elite athletes in the NFL, NHL, MLB, NBA, PGA, NFLPA, and NCAA as well as International and Olympic athletes, tactical athletes and fire fighters. She also serves on the EXOS Mentorship Education Team.

Denis Logan, Performance Specialist, joined the EXOS Athletes’ Performance team in January 2008. A 2007 graduate of the Athletes’ Performance Intern Program, Denis serves as a performance specialists in the education department. Prior to joining Athletes’ Performance, he was a strength coach at Aviator Sports Performance in New York. Denis most recently completed his M.S. in Fitness and Health Management from the US Sports Academy. Both Michelle and Denis just returned from the NFL Combine, a week-long showcase occurring every February at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, where college football players perform a big battery of physical and mental tests in front of National Football League coaches, general managers, and scouts. Implications of an athlete's performance during the combine can affect their draft status and salary, and ultimately their career, and an athlete's "draft stock" is increased based on superior measurable qualities such as size, speed, and strength. Michelle and Denis are real experts when it comes to maximizing these qualities, and during this episode, you'll discover:

-What the NFL Combine is...

-What kind of blood testing athletes have done in the NFL Combine...

-How personalized and individualized meals are created for each athlete...

-What kind of supplements the athletes take...

-A typical a ‘day in the life of an athlete’...

-Why dry needling and acupuncture is used...

-The concept of VooDoo bands and how they are used in the athletes...

-How an athlete's sleep is enhanced at the Combine...

-And much more!

Several podcast episodes ago, I tackled a very tricky and often confusing topic with a doctor named Konstantin Monastyrsky.   In that episode, entitled "How Much Fiber To Eat, Where To Get Your Fiber, And Is Fiber *Really* Killing Your Insides?", Konstantin covered several topics, including: -Why it is that doctors tell us to eat plenty of fiber…and what doctors don’t know… -How much fiber is “too much”, and how much it varies from person to person… -The difference between just eating lots of fruits and vegetables vs. using a high fiber “cleanse”... -The truth behind dangerous “laxatives”… -What someone with constipation can do if high fiber and laxatives is not the solution… -And much more... That particular episode generated so many dozens and dozens of questions that I decided to bring Konstantin back, and in this episode, I ask him: -In the article "Is Fiber Bad For You", you discuss how you don't endorse eating the skins of vegetables and fruits. But what about the insoluble fiber you're missing out on, and also the other benefits listed here?   -Isn't there a "hormetic" effect to eating the type of components in the skin of foods like potatoes and tomatoes and eggplants?   -The study "Stopping or reducing dietary fiber intake reduces constipation and its associated symptoms"...and I know that sometimes, especially when acute or inflamed or infected, lower fiber can be helpful.  This is why lower fiber is recommended for acute IBD and for many cases of SIBO. But, once the GI is healed, wouldn't a higher fiber intake is generally well tolerated and health promoting?   -You say: “Fiber intake has also been linked with the metabolic syndrome, a constellation of factors that increases the chances of developing heart disease and diabetes.”  But that study you quoted in full says:   "Fiber intake has also been linked with the metabolic syndrome, a constellation of factors that increases the chances of developing heart disease and diabetes. These factors include high blood pressure, high insulin levels, excess weight (especially around the abdomen), high levels of triglycerides, the body’s main fat-carrying particle, and low levels of HDL (good) cholesterol. Several studies suggest that higher intake of cereal fiber and whole grains may somehow ward off this increasingly common syndrome."   How would you reply?   -How do you address this association between fiber intake and lowering of coronary disease?   "Our results suggest an inverse association between fiber intake and MI. These results support current national dietary guidelines to increase dietary fiber intake and suggest that fiber, independent of fat intake, is an important dietary component for the prevention of coronary disease."   and this:   "The greatest impact on lowering total and LDL cholesterol is derived from reduced intakes of saturated fat and cholesterol as well as weight reduction in obese persons. Diets high in complex carbohydrates and fiber are associated with reduced mortality rates from CHD and other chronic diseases. Fiber found in oats, barley, and pectin-rich fruits and vegetables provides adjunctive lipid-lowering benefits beyond those achieved by reductions in total and saturated fat alone. The AHA recommends a total dietary fiber intake of 25 to 30 g/d from foods, not supplements, to ensure nutrient adequacy and maximize the cholesterol-lowering impact of a fat-modified diet. Current dietary fiber intakes among adults in the United States average about 15 g, or half the recommended amount."   -How do you feel about resistant starch and the current "resistant starch" interest in the dietary industry? Is that a form of fiber that also causes issues, or not? Would you recommend this diet in certain cases?   -How does one specifically "fix" a colon that has lack of bacteria. Does a probiotic work? OR would you need more of an enema approach? The reason I ask is I have seen many folks endorse the use of probiotic and/or butyrate enemas for colonic health.   -How about fecal transplants. How do you feel about those for restoring colonic health?   -When it comes to constipation, what is your #1 solution, in terms of specific ingredients or protocols that can help with it?   -And finally, the million dollar question, do you use a Squatty Potty? If you want to try any of Konstantin’s supplements for healing the gut or eliminating constipation, or read his book “The Fiber Menace”, simply click here. Questions, comments or feedback about how much fiber to eat? Leave them at BenGreenfieldFitness.com and either Konstantin or I will reply!

Listener Q&A:

As compiled, deciphered, edited and sometimes read by Rachel Browne, the NEW Podcast Sidekick.

Chia Seeds vs. Flax Seeds (And The Truth About Flax, Chia & Estrogen)

Brock says: What's your take on the Chia/Flaxseed phyto-estrogen thing that a lot of people have been taking about? Flax are apparently extremely high in phyto-estrogen and Chia seeds are getting a bad rap. Both of them are things you recommend in the past, not in huge quantities, but is there anything he should be worried about?

In my response, I recommend: - Carb Cycling For Fat Loss

Wendy says: She recently listened to the Mark Sisson podcast and was in agreement with everything. She's wondering what your thoughts are on eating a LCHF diet for 5 days then switching to a LFHC diet for three days and repeating this cycle forever for fat loss?

In my response, I recommend: -Carb backloading -Dulloo AG, Samec S. Uncoupling proteins: their roles in adaptive thermogenesis and substrate metabolism reconsidered. Ian says: He's trying to build a high end luxury bed and breakfast in Canada and wants your suggestion for what to provide people. Its a very active sporty town - hardcore mountain biking, skiing, dirt biking etc. What would be the best gear, home set up, supplements, sleep optimization and recovery ideas to include?

In my response, I recommend: -Infrared Sauna (& cold pool) -Fats & exogenous ketones (e.g. Pruvit) / Laird Hamilton's Superfoods -Chilipad cube -Normatec boots -An altitude training system -How To Biohack The Ultimate Healthy Home book The Ultimate Altitude Training Supplement Stack

Hans says: He's training for a 50K ultramarathon in Patagonia, in April, and he's doing it from Cuzco in Peru - 3500 m above sea level. His body has taken 3 weeks to adapt and now he can go for long runs with out feeling exhausted. His heart rate compared to effort is very high - how can he adjust his training at this altitude so he can get the most out of it? Also, the race is at sea level, is there a golden number of days he should stay at sea level before the race?

In my response, I recommend:   -Nitric oxide precursors (e.g. EXOS arginine) -Hydration (e.g. coconut water, OralIV, etc.) -Adaptogens to assist with nervous system (e.g. TianChi)   -Mitochondrial support (e.g. Mitogen)   -Electrolytes (e.g. Athlytes by Millennium Sports - 50% discount mstbg09)

Three years ago, an inventor named Paul Becker joined me for a podcast entitled "How Something Called Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy Can Make You Sleep Like A Baby (And Do Much More Than That)".

In it, Paul talks about a special "PEMF" device called "The EarthPulse". I also mention my own use of this little doughnut-shaped magnetic device for enhancing sleep in the sleep-hacking chapters of my book Beyond Training and also in the recent article 5 Biohacks To Beat Insomia, Sleep Better On Airplanes, And Shut Down Stress. Today Paul's back. But he's not here to fill us in on how PEMF can make us sleep better. Instead, we're going to talk about the legal performance enhancing effects of PEMF, and exactly how to use something like The EarthPulse for way more than sleep.

During this episode, you'll discover:

-How electrical stimulation can be used to kill bacteria and viruses...

-How to triple your mitochondrial density while you are sleeping...

-Why earthing, grounding and sleeping outside on the earth is much different than use of a PEMF device...

-Why the PEMF emitted by a device is different than what is emitted from a cell phone...

-The correct way to use PEMF to increase rate of tissue repair...

-How PEMF affects the nervous system and HRV...

-And much more...

What Makes Ben Greenfield Tick

10 min
View

I’m often asked…

…why…

…instead of podcasting, interviewing and speaking about one specific topic, I have such a huge variety of guests on my show, from vegans to Paleo-ists, from biohackers to mushroom harvesters, from minimalist exercisers to ultraendurance masochists…

…why…

…instead of recommending one single mighty exercise program, I write about and feature everything from super-slow training to powerlifting to obstacle racing to body weight workouts to yoga and beyond….

…why…

…instead of recommending one single supplement or brand, I instead experiment with and talk about a huge variety of superfoods, herbs, oils, tinctures, patches, supplements, supplement stacks and supplement companies…

…and why…

…instead of using and recommending one single quantification or biohacking device, I talk about and use everything from heart rate variability to intranasal light devices to in-ear phototherapy to wearable infrared and beyond.

As a matter of fact, because I’m constantly immersed in, studying and experimenting with the most intriguing, the most enchanting and the most useful things to better your body and brain, I’ve been accused of being a guy with a confusing and ever-shifting message, a flake, shallow, a charlatan, a hypocrite, and a sleazy internet marketer who promotes every newest workout, diet or supplement on the face of the planet!

——————-

So please allow me to set the record straight here with three quick facts for you.

Fact #1: Since I was 15 years old, and for nearly two decades, I’ve spent time immersed in everything from tennis to bodybuilding to water polo to basketball to volleyball to obstacle racing to Ironman to hunting to freediving to fiction writing to guitar to violin to being single to being married to being a father…you get the idea. And during that time, I’ve committed to 7 day body part split workouts, isometric training, electrostimulation, neurofeedback, water aerobics, strength-only, endurance-only, spinning, Zumba, infrared sauna, transcranial direct current stimulation, kickboxing and beyond.

Take-away message: it’s OK to have different body and brain training approaches for different skills and desired outcomes. My goal is to simply spend time in the trenches so I can educate and equip YOU with as much helpful information as possible so that you are able to choose the correct movement approach, workout, exercise or “hack”  for your specific goals. That’s not going to be the same for everyone, and I certainly don’t recommend you do it all at once (looking at you, yoga guy holding the kettlebell underwater with an electrostimulation cap).

Fact #2: Posted on my office wall is a sign that says: “A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.”

Take-away message: even though it’s just fine to do so, you don’t *have* to do the same thing your whole life (e.g. Ironman triathlons or bodybuilding or yoga). You can branch out and live life to the fullest, and for you, this may mean experimenting with many different pleasures and pursuits planet Earth has to offer. And sometimes people will find it confusing when your passions change like new chapters in a book. That has certainly seemed to happen to me (e.g. Q. “But Ben, you said last year that you found Tai Chi was the best way to reduce stress and now you say it’s freediving…you’re such a flake!” A. “That’s because my opinion changed based on personal experience”). Hopefully that does you more good than harm.

Fact #3: Every week, I look at dozens of blood and biomarker results from clients all over the globe, and spend countless hours doing phone and Skype consults, coaching everyone from athletes to CEO’s to soccer moms, and doing online exercise and nutrition programming. While working with so many different individual body types, metabolisms and personalities, I have developed different biohacks, different diets and different supplement stacks for different people and have found that those needs often drastically change depending on what you happen to be doing in life at the time (e.g. long breath-holds vs. fat loss vs. ketosis vs. pulling an all-nighter studying vs. libido vs. hunting in the wilderness, etc.).

Take-away message: when I recommend or talk about a specific fat loss supplement, or meal replacement powder, or a probiotic, or infrared device, or electrostimulation tool, or heck, a razor, it doesn’t mean I recommend every single person on the face of the planet needs to rush out to buy that tool immediately. All it means is that I’ve discovered a cool new thing that is going to help SOME people in SOME situations, and if you listen to my podcasts and read my articles, you will become very well educated about whether something I recommend is actually meant for YOU at this point in your life, and if you DON’T know or you’re confused, then ASK me!

Quick summary: 1) different strategies need to be used for different desired outcomes; 2) life is like a book, with new chapters as you go, and that should be exciting, not confusing; 3) take everything I say with a grain of salt because you may need to actually go out and discover (or simply ask me) whether it applies to your specific situation.

——————-

Ultimately…

I’m a connector. I do my best to connect you with people and solutions that address your specific problems or questions…

I’m an author. I write what I keep my fingers crossed will be educational, enchanting and non-run-of-the-mill information about health, fitness, nutrition, longevity and happiness…

I’m a teacher. I love to teach you how to get the most out of your body and your brain…

And I realize that some people would be less “confused” if I stuck with just one exercise, one workout, one diet, one supplement and one biohack for the rest of all time.

But that’s not the life I live.

Some days I eat kale, some days I eat bok choy, some days I eat spinach, and some days I fast.

Some days I take TianChi, some days TruBrain, some days Reishi mushroom, some days nothing.

Some days I do yoga, some powerlifting, some body weight training, some cold water swimming.

Sometimes I don’t eat meat for a week and sometimes I have steak every day.

I have different approaches for different days for different needs for different goals.

And yes, that means that on any given blog post or podcast I might tell you about five different new ways to solve a problem you’re facing and those ways might be completely different than five other ways I told you about just a year ago. That’s because I’m constantly learning, constantly evolving, constantly adapting. It doesn’t mean I’m some slick, slippery marketer who is taking handfuls of cash under the table so I can jump in front of a microphone or keyboard to promote every silly thing that comes across my radar. Trust me: hundreds of products, diets, books, supplements and people come across my radar every week, and I’m extremely selective about any I choose to experiment with, trial, or tell you about.

So there you have it. I realize that it can be confusing to follow a guy who is constantly immersed in and chasing new ways to live life to the fullest, but I also like to think it’s a heckuva lot of fun, and I promise you won’t be bored.

And now I’m off my soapbox.

Now it’s your turn.

Would you rather I create the Greenfield Workout, Greenfield Diet, Greenfield Supplement and Mighty Greenfield All-Encompassing Wristwatch so that I can get laser-focused and stop confusing people?

Or should I keep on keeping an open mind, and exploring every corner of the earth for things that help me and you to continually get better bodies, grow better brains, and become better people?

If you've been paying attention to the BenGreenfieldFitness Instagram page lately, you may know that I've just returned from a big axis deer hunt in Texas. Before that, I was hunting whitetail deer in Washington and elk in Colorado. I spent the summer competing in TrainToHunt bowhunting, meatpacking and obstacle course competition, I won the Idaho TrainToHunt, and now I've got my eyes on safari hunting in Africa and moose and bear hunting in British Columbia. In the podcast episode "Are Hunters The Fittest People In The World?" I interview TrainToHunt founder Kenton Clairmont, and in the episode "How To Build Primal Fitness And Endurance By Hunting: An Interview With A Bowhunting Triathlete", you learn how an Ironman triathlon competitor combines hunting with endurance sports.

With the growing popularity of sports like TrainToHunt, bowhunting, and even a growing interest in the ancestral practice of persistence hunting, I figured it was high time to introduce you to the guy who has organized a couple of the hunts I've been on, and who is one of the world's leading authorities on finding good hunts, building hunting fitness and much more.

So if you want to tap into the primal practice of challenging your body in the wilderness and hunting and gathering your own tasty meat, then this episode is for you. My guest Marc Warnke is owner of GotHunts a hunting consultant, family man, avid bow hunter, mule deer fanatic, fly fisherman and best selling author.

Marc has had global hunting experience with outfitters in Canada, Africa and New Zealand. He understands what makes a quality hunt, how to find challenging hunts and (as a fellow TrainToHunt competitor) how to build the ultimate hunting fitness. -How Marc became a hunting guide... -The most thrilling place in the world to hunt... -How to "get into" hunting, even if you didn't grow up with it... -The biggest fitness “holes” you're going to face when you begin hunting... -Why persistence hunting may be the next big thing in hunting fitness... -The best kind of hunting and hunts to go on if you really want to challenge your fitness... -And much more!

Listener Q&A:

As compiled, deciphered, edited and sometimes read by Rachel Browne, the NEW Podcast Sidekick.

How Much Sleep Is Too Much?

Gina says: She thinks she might be getting too much sleep. She's getting 9/9.5 hours/night, she sleeps like a rockstar according to her sleep sensor. She's not depressed, she doesn't get up during sleep, she's not over training. Her question is should she continue listening to her body or should she start waking herself up after 7.5/8 hours or could it be an issue of supplementation?

In my response, I recommend: -The new SR1 DeltaSleeper I've been using -how long I slept after agoge -athletes vs. general population -Sleep tracking and my Joe Zelk podcast What Causes Bumps Underneath Skin

Anna says: She was foam rolling the outside of her leg and around the middle of her IT band and she noticed the area was bumpy under her skin. What causes this bumpiness? What's the best method to relieve it?

In my response, I recommend: - Hangovers From Running

Kate says: What can she do to prevent  or recover from a running hangover? After short runs, long runs or hard exercise, she gets headaches, feels nauseous and super awful, after which its hard to get motivated to workout again. She's tried electrolyte tabs, coconut water, foods, preloading electrolytes, drinking tons of fluid and nothing seems to help. What can she do to fix this?

In my response, I recommend: -Testing for inflammation -Adrenal stress index -Mobility work/fascial adhesions -Pre-cooling/post-cooling -Motion sickness (ginger/peppermint) How Endurance Athletes Can Gain Weight

Ellen says: She's a marathon and ultra runner with CFC's animal and plant based diet. She wants to increase her appetite and her weight, but she doesn't want to reduce her training. Can you make any suggestions?

In my response, I recommend: -MRP's like LivingFuel SuperGreens -Fish Oil -Echinachea Alkylamides -Plum Extract -Aminos

-We finish this episode with a tip from Jordan Harbinger at the Art of Charm podcast!: nonverbal communication skills versus just using your body to be charming. -----------------------------------------------------

Prepare for your mind to be blown by today's podcast guest. Mine certainly was. My guest is Steve Sisler, and today's episode, he tears me completely apart, absolutely amazes me as he "psychoanalyzes" me, and during the entire process, you're going to learn a ton about yourself and your behavior. If you've ever wanted to know what makes you tick... Exactly why you think the way you do... What drives you personally when you exercise or race... How you interact with people and relationships (and how you can make this work for or against you)... And why you behave the way you behave... This episode is a must-listen for you...

Steve is author of the book: The Four People Types: And What Drives Them, a behavioral profiler and lead behavioral analyst at The Behavioral Resource Group. He works with clients in more than 18 nations, gathering behavioral, emotional, and attitudinal information on individuals within corporate and personal settings. Then he develops strategies for leadership, teamwork, and entrepreneurial or career success. Steve is widely considered as the “go to” source for behavioral and attitudinal issues within the framework of both business and family (he's been doing this stuff since the shocking age of twelve!). He is considered a true anomaly within the world of behavioral analysis.

During our fascinating discussion, you'll discover:

-How Steven developed the crazy skill of being able to "read people" extremely accurately from the young age of twelve...

-The one unique attitude Steven found me to possess - an attitude that only 2% of people on the face of the planet can match...

-Why people perceive me to be aloof and arrogant based on my high level of no-nonsense, black-and-white thinking...

-Why Steven observes that I could be either a very good assassin or a sniper...

-How when I am in work mode I become a complete perfectionistic machine and check my emotions at the door...

-Why I score very high on alternative ideas, unconventional thoughts and thinking outside-the-box...

-The reason Steven thinks I'm not competitive, but rather simply an artist, discoverer and educator...

-I don't compete and race and spend time in the gym because I'm competitive, but rather because I am, what Steven describes as a "body artist"...

-Why I score extremely high on individualism, innovation, uniqueness, autonomy, freedom (and hate teleprompters)...

-The reason I'm very comfortable not necessarily being the person in charge...

-Why I am a rule-breaker and why I have a negative, cautious bias when it comes to following rules......

-The reason some people can perceive that I don't "care", and why I tend to care the most about people who are making an effort to help themselves...

-What it means to have an itchy brain, and why some people will change direction very quickly in life and let go of non-effective ideas easily...

-Why my score is crystal clear when it comes to how my choices affect those around me, and why it's extremely important to me that any decision I make not hurt anyone around me...

-Why I'm extremely demanding and critical of myself...

-The personality that makes me relentless, want to never give up, keep striving to get better and better, and have a perception nobody can stop me...

-Why I'm very clear about who I am... -And much more!

Imagine a stadium full of screaming fans. Zoom in on the contestants. They're sweating from the intensity of the competition. What could it be? Boxing? MMA? Basketball? Tennis? American ninja warrior? Nope. It's electronic sports, also known as eSports, and the "athletes" are headset-wearing, energy-drink-guzzling, smart-drug-popping gamers. And this sport is booming.  Top eSports tournaments now draw audiences that rival the biggest traditional sporting events, and live streams online routinely attract more than 100,000 viewers. Companies like Coke, Nissan and   Red Bull sponsor tournaments, and last year alone, over 205 million people watched or played eSports. As a matter of fact, today's eSports tournaments rival practically any big sporting event. The League of Legends Championship sold out Staples Center in 2013, then sold out the 40,000-seat World Cup Stadium in Seoul a year later while drawing an online audience of 27 million -- more than the TV viewership for the final round of the Masters. Videos of these online gaming sports has more YouTube followers than news, movies and education combined. There's money in this too. Check out the graphic below from ESPN:

ESPN.com illustration

But eSports isn't just online fun and money. There are some serious health risks involved with this sport. There's drugs. There's drug testing.  There is the potential physiological effects of having your senses constantly bombarded by blue light, blue tooth and Wi-Fi. So, in today's podcast, were going to take a deep dive into the crazy world of eSports. My guest today is Zach Burks, founder of a nootropic and smart drug company called NuSups. Zach started his career serving the USA in the Army, then moved to business with the knowledge he gained, and now specializes in enhancing mental and physical performance in gamers.

In today's episode, you're going to discover: -How the exploding world of eSports works behind the scenes... -The physical fitness demands of playing eSports... -The health and sleep implications of the constant exposure to Wi-Fi, bluelight, Bluetooth and the other electronic assailants eSports athletes face... -The "under-the-radar" kind of smart drugs or supplements these athletes are using... -The difference between supplements used as stimulants and supplements used for calming effects... -How drug testing in eSports works... -The best smart drug and nootropic stacks being used in gaming... -And much more!

Resources from this episode: -Zach's website NuSups (use discount code is "brainyben1" for 10% and free shipping on any order) -The movie "Gamer" -Ben's liver cleansing stack: MPX100 + glutathione + n-acetylcysteine + chlorella + Alphabrain -Blue light blocking glasses -Notes from Zach's recommended stacks (all available from NuSups - use discount code is "brainyben1" for 10% and free shipping on any order)   Every stack needs 1 Choline Source, and 1 Synaptic Booster, at minimum! Synaptic Boosters: Piracetam - Increased Memory Improved Learning Greater Focus Heightened Sensory Function Reduced Anxiety/Depression Improved Vasodilation Reduced Brain Trauma Aniracetam - Improved Memory Increased Learning Ability Improved Cognitive Processing Heightened Reflexes Heightened Perception Reduced Anxiety Reduced Depression Oxiracetam - Increase in Memory Enhanced Learning Ability Better Sensory Perception Advance Technical Thinking Improved Focus Noopept - Powerful Racetam Boosts Acetylcholine production The best Nootropic for creating and recalling memories, and learning. Feel free to use this stack is you'd like the results listed. Busy Mode: 20mg x Noopept 200mg x Phenylpiracetam 1gram x ALCAR 250mg x Adrafinil This stack is something you will DEFINITELY feel. I call this the busy mode stack for one reason. The combination of Racetams and Adrafinil allow for complete focus as well as potential time dilation effects. You could tweak the amount of Adrafinil or Phenylpiracetam if this stack is too much for you: just lower the amounts by 50mgs. Capital C(reativity) stack: 500mg x Aniracetam 150mg x Phenylpiracetam 300mg x Pyritinol 20mg x Noopept 150mg x L-Theanine This stack is great for any artist or creative person who needs an extra boost for a project. This stack honestly bothers me sometimes because what happens to me is that I'll have 5 to 7 songs get stuck in my head a day: songs I haven't heard in years! Now obviously, this is highly personal and won't happen to everyone. But it's just a nice little way to explain the creative boost you'll get.

Do you have questions, comments or feedback about the exploding world of eSports,  or anything else Zach and I discussed in this episode? Leave your thoughts at BenGreenfieldFitness.com and either Zach or I will reply.
